Abstract:All current global climate models (GCMs) utilize only grid-averaged surface heat fluxes to drive the atmosphere, and thus their subgrid horizontal variations and partitioning are absent. This can result in many simulation biases. To address this shortcoming, a novel parameterization scheme considering the subgrid variations of the sensible and latent heat fluxes to the atmosphere and the associated partitioning is developed and implemented into the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Climate Earth System Model 1.2 (CESM1.2). Compared to the default model, in addition to the improved boreal summer precipitation simulation over eastern China and the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal, the long-standing overestimations of precipitation on the southern and eastern margins of the Tibetan Plateau (TP) in most GCMs are alleviated. The improved precipitation simulation on the southern margin of the TP is from suppressed large-scale precipitation, while that on the eastern edge of the TP is due to decreased convective precipitation. Moisture advection is blocked toward the southern edge of the TP, and the anomaly of anticyclonic moisture transport over northern China extends westward, suppressing local convection on the eastern edge of the TP. The altered large-scale circulation in the lower atmosphere resulting from anomalous heating and cooling in the planetary boundary layer is responsible for the change in moisture transport. The performance of other key variables (e.g., surface energy fluxes, clouds and 2 m temperature) is also evaluated thoroughly using the default CESM1.2, the new scheme and the scheme stochastically allocating the subgrid surface heat fluxes to the atmosphere (i.e., without subgrid partitioning included). This study highlights the importance of subgrid surface energy variations and partitioning to the atmosphere in simulating the hydrological and energy cycles in GCMs.

Abstract:Subgrid horizontal variations of land surface heat fluxes to the atmosphere resulting from subgrid land cover heterogeneity are important in land‐atmosphere interaction in global climate models (GCMs). To incorporate it, a parameterization using stochastic sampling based on truncated normal distributions diagnosed from the land model and internal ensemble mean of multiple calls to the planetary boundary layer and deep convection schemes is developed. After its implementation in the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Community Earth System Model version 1.2 (CESM1.2), large changes of simulated land precipitation are found to occur in regions where large subgrid variations of surface heat fluxes exist. The simulated precipitation is improved in boreal summer, especially over eastern China and the coastal areas of the Bay of Bengal. The improved precipitation is mainly a result of improved large‐scale moisture convergence and advection by altered vertical diffution and convection. This article is protected by copyright. Global Climate Impacts of Stochastic Deep Convection Parameterization in the Ncar Cam5

Abstract:In this study, the stochastic deep convection parameterization of Plant and Craig (PC) is implemented in the Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5) to incorporate the stochastic processes of convection into the Zhang-McFarlane (ZM) deterministic deep convective scheme. Its impacts on deep convection, shallow convection, large-scale precipitation and associated dynamic and thermodynamic fields are investigated. Results show that with the introduction of the PC stochastic parameterization, deep convection is decreased while shallow convection is enhanced. The decrease in deep convection is mainly caused by the stochastic process and the spatial averaging of input quantities for the PC scheme. More detrained liquid water associated with more shallow convection leads to significant increase in liquid water and ice water paths, which increases large-scale precipitation in tropical regions. Specific humidity, relative humidity, zonal wind in the tropics, and precipitable water are all improved. The simulation of shortwave cloud forcing (SWCF) is also improved. The PC stochastic parameterization decreases the global mean SWCF from 252.25 W/m(2) in the standard CAM5 to 248.86 W/m(2), close to 247.16 W/m(2) in observations. The improvement in SWCF over the tropics is due to decreased low cloud fraction simulated by the stochastic scheme. Sensitivity tests of tuning parameters are also performed to investigate the sensitivity of simulated climatology to uncertain parameters in the stochastic deep convection scheme.

Abstract:We improved the treatments of convective cloud microphysics in the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model version 5.3 (CAM5.3) by (1) implementing new terminal-velocity parameterizations for convective ice and snow particles, (2) adding graupel microphysics, (3) considering convective snow detrainment, and (4) enhancing rain initiation and generation rate in warm clouds. We evaluated the impacts of improved microphysics on simulated global climate, focusing on simulated cloud radiative forcing, graupel microphysics, convective cloud ice amount, and tropical precipitation. Compared to CAM5.3 with the default convective microphysics, the too strong cloud shortwave radiative forcing due primarily to excessive convective cloud liquid is largely alleviated over the tropics and midlatitudes after rain initiation and generation rate is enhanced, in better agreement with the CERES-EBAF estimates. Geographic distributions of graupel occurrence are reasonably simulated over continents; whereas the graupel occurrence remains highly uncertain over the oceanic storm track regions. When evaluated against the CloudSat-CALIPSO estimates, the overestimation of convective ice mass is alleviated with the improved convective ice microphysics, among which adding graupel microphysics and the accompanying increase in hydrometeor fall speed play the most important role. The probability distribution function (PDF) of rainfall intensity is sensitive to warm rain processes in convective clouds, and enhancement in warm rain production shifts the PDF toward heavier precipitation, which agrees better with the TRMM observations. Common biases of overestimating the light rain frequency and underestimating the heavy rain frequency in GCMs are mitigated.

Abstract:Performance of global climate models (GCMs) is strongly affected by the cumulus parameterization (CP) used. Similar to the approach in GFDL AM4, a double-plume CP, which unifies the deep and shallow convection in one framework, is implemented and tested in the NCAR Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5). Based on the University of Washington (UW) shallow convection scheme, an additional plume was added to represent the deep convection. The shallow and deep plumes share the same cloud model, but use different triggers, fractional mixing rates, and closures. The scheme was tested in single-column, short-term hindcast, and AMIP simulations. Compared with the default combination of the Zhang-McFarlane scheme and UW scheme in CAM5, the new scheme tends to produce a top-heavy mass flux profile during the active monsoon period in the single-column simulations. The scheme increases the intensity of tropical precipitation, closer to TRMM observations. The new scheme increased subtropical marine boundary layer clouds and high clouds over the deep tropics, both in better agreement with observations. Sensitivity tests indicate that regime-dependent fractional entrainment rates of the deep plume are desired to improve tropical precipitation distribution and upper troposphere temperature. This study suggests that a double-plume approach is a promising way to combine shallow and deep convections in a unified framework.

Abstract:A parameterization scheme for the thermal effects of subgrid scale orography is incorporated into a regional climate model (developed at Nanjing University) and its impact on modeling of the surface energy budget over East Asia is evaluated. This scheme includes the effect of terrain slope and orientation on the computation of solar and infrared radiation fluxes at the surface, as well as the surface sensible and latent heat fluxes. Calculations show that subgrid terrain parameters alter the diurnal cycle and horizontal distributions of surface energy budget components. This effect becomes more significant with increased terrain slope, especially in winter. Due to the inclusion of the subgrid topography, the surface area of a model grid box changes over complex terrain areas. Numerical experiments, with and without the subgrid scale topography scheme, show that the parameterization scheme of subgrid scale topography modifies the distribution of the surface energy budget and surface temperature around the Tibetan Plateau. Comparisons with observations indicate that the subgrid topography scheme, implemented in the climate model, reproduces the observed detailed spatial temperature structures at the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau and reduces the tendency to overestimate precipitation along the southern coastal areas of China in summer.

Abstract:Abstract A single column model with parameterized large‐scale (LS) dynamics is used to better understand the response of steady‐state tropical precipitation to relative sea surface temperature under various representations of radiation, convection, and circulation. The large‐scale dynamics are parametrized via the weak temperature gradient (WTG), damped gravity wave (DGW), and spectral weak temperature gradient (Spectral WTG) method in NCAR's Single Column Atmosphere Model (SCAM6). Radiative cooling is either specified or interactive, and the convective parameterization is run using two different values of a parameter that controls the degree of convective inhibition. Results are interpreted in the context of the Global Atmospheric System Studies ‐Weak Temperature Gradient (GASS‐WTG) Intercomparison project. Using the same parameter settings and simulation configuration as in the GASS‐WTG Intercomparison project, SCAM6 under the WTG and DGW methods produces erratic results, suggestive of numerical instability. However, when key parameters are changed to weaken the large‐scale circulation's damping of tropospheric temperature variations, SCAM6 performs comparably to single column models in the GASS‐WTG Intercomparison project. The Spectral WTG method is less sensitive to changes in convection and radiation than are the other two methods, performing qualitatively similarly across all configurations considered. Under all three methods, circulation strength, represented in 1D by grid‐scale vertical velocity, is decreased when barriers to convection are reduced. This effect is most extreme under specified radiative cooling, and is shown to come from increased static stability in the column's reference radiative‐convective equilibrium profile. This argument can be extended to interactive radiation cases as well, though perhaps less conclusively.

Abstract:Most global climate models parameterize separate cloud types using separate parameterizations. This approach has several disadvantages, including obscure interactions between parameterizations and inaccurate triggering of cumulus parameterizations. Alternatively, a unified cloud parameterization uses one equation set to represent all cloud types. Such cloud types include stratiform liquid and ice cloud, shallow convective cloud, and deep convective cloud. Vital to the success of a unified parameterization is a general interface between clouds and microphysics. One such interface involves drawing Monte Carlo samples of subgrid variability of temperature, water vapor, cloud liquid, and cloud ice, and feeding the sample points into a microphysics scheme. This study evaluates a unified cloud parameterization and a Monte Carlo microphysics interface that has been implemented in the Community Atmosphere Model (CAM) version 5.3. Model computational expense is estimated, and sensitivity to the number of subcolumns is investigated. Results describing the mean climate and tropical variability from global simulations are presented. The new model shows a degradation in precipitation skill but improvements in shortwave cloud forcing, liquid water path, long-wave cloud forcing, precipitable water, and tropical wave simulation.
The influence of different parameterizations on diurnal cycle of land precipitation in CAS-ESM

Abstract:The impacts of physical parameterizations on the diurnal cycle of precipitation (DCP) over land are investigated by comparing long-term simulations of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Earth System Model (CAS-ESM). Significant improvements in the DCP occur when the model replaces the Community Atmosphere Model version 4 (CAM4) physics package with the CAM5 package at both global and regional scales. Globally, the reduced amplitudes and delayed phases of DCP with the CAM5 package can be explained by the diurnal variations in convective available potential energy (CAPE). Regionally, the improvements in the DCP are caused by the decreased daytime convergence at 850 hPa, smaller vertically integrated water vapor transport, weakened vertical velocity, and smaller stratus cloud liquid water amount simulated by the CAM5 package. Besides, CAS-ESM with the CAM5 package produces the decreased amplitudes and delayed phases of the diurnal variation of the convective cloud, which is closely related to the planetary boundary layer (PBL) processes. CAS-ESM with the CAM5 package exhibits a significantly lower PBL height than with the CAM4 package for both direct model outputs and estimates with the bulk Richardson number method. The peaks of lifting condensation level (LCL) deficit (difference between PBL height and LCL height) occur later (~1–3 h) and are lower with the CAM5 package than with the CAM4 package. Consequently, CAS-ESM with the CAM5 package decreases the probability of cloud formation and produces more realistic DCP. This study underscores the importance of PBL schemes to the simulated convective clouds and DCP.

Uncertainty Quantification and Parameter Tuning in the Cam5 Zhang-Mcfarlane Convection Scheme and Impact of Improved Convection on the Global Circulation and Climate

Abstract:In this study, we applied an uncertainty quantification (UQ) technique to improve convective precipitation in the global climate model, the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (CAM5), in which the convective and stratiform precipitation partitioning is very different from observational estimates. We examined the sensitivity of precipitation and circulation to several key parameters in the Zhang-McFarlane deep convection scheme in CAM5, using a stochastic importance-sampling algorithm that can progressively converge to optimal parameter values. The impact of improved deep convection on the global circulation and climate was subsequently evaluated. Our results show that the simulated convective precipitation is most sensitive to the parameters of the convective available potential energy consumption time scale, parcel fractional mass entrainment rate, and maximum downdraft mass flux fraction. Using the optimal parameters constrained by the observed Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission, convective precipitation improves the simulation of convective to stratiform precipitation ratio and rain-rate spectrum remarkably. When convection is suppressed, precipitation tends to be more confined to the regions with strong atmospheric convergence. As the optimal parameters are used, positive impacts on some aspects of the atmospheric circulation and climate, including reduction of the double Intertropical Convergence Zone, improved East Asian monsoon precipitation, and improved annual cycles of the cross-equatorial jets, are found as a result of the vertical and horizontal redistribution of latent heat release from the revised parameterization. Positive impacts of the optimal parameters derived from the 2 degrees simulations are found to transfer to the 1 degrees simulations to some extent. Citation: Yang, B. et al. Improving the Treatment of Subgrid Cloud Variability in Warm Rain Simulation in CESM2

Abstract:Representing subgrid variability of cloud properties has always been a challenge in global climate models (GCMs). In microphysics schemes, the effects of subgrid cloud variability on warm rain process rates calculated based on mean cloud properties are usually accounted for by scaling process rates by an enhancement factor (EF) that is derived from the subgrid variance of cloud water. In our study, we find that the EF derived from Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBB) in Community Earth System Model Version 2 (CESM2) is severely overestimated in most of the oceanic areas, which leads to the strong overestimation in the autoconversion rate. Through an EF formula based on empirical fitting of MODIS, we improve the EF in the liquid phase clouds. Results show that the model has a more reasonable relationship between autoconversion rate, cloud liquid water content (LWC), and droplet number concentration (CDNC) in warm rain simulation. The annual mean liquid cloud fraction (LCF), liquid water path (LWP), and CDNC show obvious increases for marine stratocumulus, where the probability of precipitation (POP) shows an obvious decrease. The annual mean LCF, cloud optical thickness (COT), and shortwave cloud forcing (SWCF) match better with observation. The sensitivity of LWP to aerosol decreases obviously. The sensitivities of LCF, LWP, cloud top droplet effective radius (CER), and COT to aerosol are in better agreement with MODIS, but the model still underestimates the response of cloud albedo to aerosol. These results indicate the importance of representing reasonable subgrid cloud variabilities in the simulation of cloud properties and aerosol-cloud interaction in climate models.
A Method for Interpreting the Role of Parameterized Turbulence on Global Metrics in the Community Earth System Model

Abstract:Abstract The parameterization of subgrid‐scale processes such as boundary layer (PBL) turbulence introduces uncertainty in Earth System Model (ESM) results. This uncertainty can contribute to or exacerbate existing biases in representing key physical processes. This study analyzes the influence of tunable parameters in an experimental version of the Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBBX) scheme. CLUBB is the operational PBL parameterization in the Community Atmosphere Model version 6 (CAM6), the atmospheric component of the Community ESM version 2 (CESM2). We perform the Morris one‐at‐a‐time (MOAT) parameter sensitivity analysis using short‐term (3‐day), initialized hindcasts of CAM6‐CLUBBX with 24 unique initial conditions. Several input parameters modulating vertical momentum flux appear most influential for various regionally‐averaged quantities, namely surface stress and shortwave cloud forcing (SWCF). These parameter sensitivities have a spatial dependence, with parameters governing momentum flux most influential in regions of high vertical wind shear (e.g., the mid‐latitude storm tracks). We next evaluate several experimental 20‐year simulations of CAM6‐CLUBBX with targeted parameter perturbations. We find that parameter perturbations produce similar physical mechanisms in both short‐term and long‐term simulations, but these physical responses can be muted due to nonlinear feedbacks manifesting over time scales longer than 3 days, thus causing differences in how output metrics respond in the long‐term simulations. Analysis of turbulent fluxes in CLUBBX indicates that the influential parameters affect vertical fluxes of heat, moisture, and momentum, providing physical pathways for the sensitivities identified in this study.

Abstract:Based on the simulations using the different parameterization schemes in the two models, a series of simulations were conducted and the results indicate the causes of different simulation between two models may result from different parameterization schemes on the vegetation fraction, canopy water, canopy heat flux and canopy radiation transfer, and the parameterization schemes in CoLM are more closer to the reality than those in CLM3.0. After using the corresponding schemes from CoLM, the simulations by CLM3.0 are obviously improved. Moreover, the two models have some common insufficiency in the parameterization schemes, for example, the parameterization schemes of latent heat flux, soil hydrological process, and so on, which may be the causes of the simulation errors in some cases.
Improved Climate Simulation by Using a Double-Plume Convection Scheme in a Global Model

Abstract:Convective parameterization can drastically regulate the mean climate and tropical transient activity of a General circulation model (GCM). In this study, the physics suite of the NCAR Community Atmosphere Model, version 5 (CAM5) was first ported to the Global-to-Regional Integrated Forecast System model. Then, the original convective parameterization of CAM5-with a separate representation of deep convection Zhang-Mcfarlane (ZM) and shallow convection University of Washington (UW)-was replaced by a double-plume (DP) scheme. This DP scheme adopts a quasi-unified representation of shallow and deep convection within a single framework. Results demonstrate that the new scheme brings about several improvements in the modeled climate. The differences in the trigger and closure assumptions, lateral mixing rate, and cloud model for the deep convection result in systematic regional differences in the simulated precipitation pattern, cloud vertical structure, and the associated radiative forcing. Compared with ZM-UW, DP reduces the biases in precipitation over the Indian Ocean, ameliorates the "high-frequency and low-intensity" problem of tropical precipitation, and leads to an improved representation of tropical variability, including the Madden-Julian Oscillation. Double-plume reduces low clouds and increases high clouds in the tropics, due to its internal parallel-split convective processes and smaller cumulus cloud fraction. Discussions related to parametric tuning of convective parameterization are also presented.
Simulation of Precipitation Extremes Using a Stochastic Convective Parameterization in the NCAR CAM5 under Different Resolutions

Abstract:With the incorporation of the Plant-Craig stochastic deep convection scheme into the Zhang-McFarlane deterministic parameterization in the Community Atmospheric Model version 5 (CAM5), its impact on extreme precipitation at different resolutions (2 degrees, 1 degrees, and 0.5 degrees) is investigated. CAM5 with the stochastic deep convection scheme (experiment (EXP)) simulates the precipitation extreme indices better than the standard version (control). At 2 degrees and 1 degrees resolutions, EXP increases high percentile (>99th) daily precipitation over the United States, Europe, and China, resulting in a better agreement with observations. However, at 0.5 degrees resolution, due to enhanced grid-scale precipitation with increasing resolution, EXP overestimates extreme precipitation over southeastern U.S. and eastern Europe. The reduced biases in EXP at each resolution benefit from a broader probability distribution function of convective precipitation intensity simulated. Among EXP simulations at different resolutions, if the spatial averaging area over which input quantities used in convective closure are spatially averaged in the stochastic convection scheme is comparable, the modeled convective precipitation intensity decreases with increasing resolution, when gridded to the same resolution, while the total precipitation is not sensitive to model resolution, exhibiting some degree of scale-awareness. Sensitivity tests show that for the same resolution, increasing the size of spatial averaging area decreases convective precipitation but increases the grid-scale precipitation.

Abstract:Abstract. The Earth's land surface features spatial and temporal heterogeneity over a wide range of scales below those resolved by current Earth system models. State-of-the-art land and atmosphere models employ parameterizations to represent their subgrid heterogeneity, but the land-atmosphere coupling in ESMs typically operates on the grid scale. Communicating the information of the land surface heterogeneity with the overlying atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) remains a challenge in modeling land-atmosphere interactions. In order to account for the subgrid scale heterogeneity in land-atmosphere coupling, we implement a new coupling scheme in the Energy Exascale Earth System Model version 1 (E3SMv1) that uses adjusted surface variances and covariance of potential temperature and specific water content as the lower boundary condition for the atmosphere model. The new lower boundary condition accounts for both the variability of individual subgrid land surface patches and the inter-patch variability. E3SMv1 single-column model simulations over the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Southern Great Plain (SGP) site were performed to assess the impacts. We find that the new coupling parameterization increases the magnitude and diurnal cycle of the temperature variance and humidity variance in the lower ABL in non-precipitating days. The impacts are primarily attributed to subgrid inter-patch variability rather than variability of individual patches. These effects extend vertically from the surface to several levels in the lower ABL on clear days. We also find that accounting for surface heterogeneity increases low cloud cover and liquid water path. These cloud changes are associated with the change in cloud regime indicated by the skewness of the probability density function (PDF) of the subgrid vertical velocity. In precipitating days, the inter-patch variability reduces significantly, so that the impact of accounting for surface heterogeneity vanishes. These results highlight the importance of accounting for subgrid heterogeneity in land-atmosphere coupling in next generation Earth system models.

Abstract:The Southeast Pacific (SEP) has distinct climate features that are governed by interactions among processes at multiple spatial scales and thus are hard to represent in climate models. This study investigates the local and remote impacts of various physical processes on surface fluxes over SEP in the Community Atmosphere Model version 5 by using a limited‐area parameter perturbation approach. In this approach, physical parameters from the Zhang‐McFarlane (ZM) convection scheme and the turbulence parameterization scheme of Cloud Layers Unified by Binormals (CLUBB) are perturbed in specific regions, but fixed outside. Three limited‐area perturbed parameter ensembles are performed over SEP, the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and the South Pacific convergence zone (SPCZ), respectively, with the simulations over SEP the primary focus that can respond to both local impacts and remote impacts from ITCZ and SPCZ. Results show that most of the variability of surface radiative fluxes is explained by the local impacts of sub‐grid physical processes and those related to shallow convection are most important. By contrast, a considerable portion of the variability of the surface latent heat flux is attributed to the remote effects from ITCZ and SPCZ, which are mainly contributed by the ZM parameters that can affect the large‐scale circulation by modulating the diabatic heating related to precipitation. Both the latent heat flux and shortwave radiative flux over SEP increase with the eastern‐ITCZ precipitation due to the stronger surface wind and less clouds, respectively. Overall, our results help better understand the sources of uncertainties in the simulated SEP climate.

Abstract:Abstract Land‐atmosphere interactions are central to the evolution of the atmospheric boundary layer and the subsequent formation of clouds and precipitation. Existing global climate models represent these connections with bulk approximations on coarse spatial scales, but observations suggest that small‐scale variations in surface characteristics and co‐located turbulent and momentum fluxes can significantly impact the atmosphere. Recent model development efforts have attempted to capture this phenomenon by coupling existing representations of subgrid‐scale (SGS) heterogeneity between land and atmosphere models. Such approaches are in their infancy and it is not yet clear if they can produce a realistic atmospheric response to surface heterogeneity. Here, we implement a parameterization to capture the effects of SGS heterogeneity in the Community Earth System Model (CESM2), and compare single‐column simulations against high‐resolution Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) large‐eddy simulations (LESs), which we use as a proxy for observations. The CESM2 experiments increase the temperature and humidity variances in the lowest atmospheric levels, but the response is weaker than in WRF‐LES. In part, this is attributed to an underestimate of surface heterogeneity in the land model due to a lack of SGS meteorology, a separation between deep and shallow convection schemes in the atmosphere, and a lack of explicitly represented mesoscale secondary circulations. These results highlight the complex processes involved in capturing the effects of SGS heterogeneity and suggest the need for parameterizations that communicate their influence not only at the surface but also vertically.

Abstract:Climatically important low‐level clouds are commonly misrepresented in climate models. The FAst‐physics System TEstbed and Research (FASTER) Project has constructed case studies from the Atmospheric Radiation Measurement Climate Research Facility's Southern Great Plain site during the RACORO aircraft campaign to facilitate research on model representation of boundary‐layer clouds. This paper focuses on using the single‐column Community Atmosphere Model version 5 (SCAM5) simulations of a multi‐day continental shallow cumulus case to identify specific parameterization causes of low‐cloud biases. Consistent model biases among the simulations driven by a set of alternative forcings suggest that uncertainty in the forcing plays only a relatively minor role. In‐depth analysis reveals that the model's shallow cumulus convection scheme tends to significantly under‐produce clouds during the times when shallow cumuli exist in the observations, while the deep convective and stratiform cloud schemes significantly over‐produce low‐level clouds throughout the day. The links between model biases and the underlying assumptions of the shallow cumulus scheme are further diagnosed with the aid of large‐eddy simulations and aircraft measurements, and by suppressing the triggering of the deep convection scheme. It is found that the weak boundary layer turbulence simulated is directly responsible for the weak cumulus activity and the simulated boundary layer stratiform clouds. Increased vertical and temporal resolutions are shown to lead to stronger boundary layer turbulence and reduction of low‐cloud biases.
