Abstract:Biochar is produced by pyrolysis of biomass residues under limited oxygen conditions. In recent years, biochar as an amendment has received increasing attention on composting and soil remediation, due to its unique properties such as chemical recalcitrance, high porosity and sorption capacity, and large surface area. This paper provides an overview on the impact of biochar on the chemical characteristics (greenhouse gas emissions, nitrogen loss, decomposition and humification of organic matter) and microbial community structure during composting of organic wastes. This review also discusses the use of biochar for remediation of soils contaminated with organic pollutants and heavy metals as well as related mechanisms. Besides its aging, the effects of biochar on the environment fate and efficacy of pesticides deserve special attention. Moreover, the combined application of biochar and compost affects synergistically on soil remediation and plant growth. Future research needs are identified to ensure a wide application of biochar in composting and soil remediation. Graphical abstract ᅟ

Abstract:Biochar is produced from the pyrolysis of carbon-rich plant- and animal-residues under low oxygen and high temperature conditions and has been increasingly used for its positive role in soil compartmentalization through activities such as carbon sequestration and improving soil quality. Biochar is also considered a unique adsorbent due to its high specific surface area and highly carbonaceous nature. Therefore, soil amendments with small amounts of biochar could result in higher adsorption and, consequently, decrease the bioavailability of contaminants to microbial communities, plants, earthworms, and other organisms in the soil. However, the mechanisms affecting the environmental fate and behavior of organic contaminants, especially pesticides in biochar-amended soil, are not well understood. The purpose of this work is to review the role of biochar in primary processes, such as adsorption–desorption and leaching of pesticides. Biochar has demonstrable effects on the fate and effects of pesticides and has been shown to affect the degradation and bioavailability of pesticides for living organisms. Moreover, some key aspects of agricultural and environmental applications of biochar are highlighted.

Abstract:Due to their widespread distribution, microplastics (MPs) are endangering the soil ecological environment system, causing water pollution and altering the soil's physicochemical and microbiological features. Because of its unique pore structure and strong stability, biochar is widely used as an adsorbent. However, the effects of MP–biochar interactions in water and soil environment are still unclear. This review outlines the application and mechanism of biochar as an adsorbent in a water environment for the removal of MPs. Also, biochar serves as remediation material for MPs in soils as it mitigates the adverse effects of MPs on soil properties, enzyme activities and soil microbial community. It was found that woody biochar had the highest yield and was more effective in adsorbing MPs. Further research should focus on the combined effects of biochar and MPs, the environmental risks of biochar, the modification of biochar application of MP-removal technologies, the characterization of MP properties, the remediation of combined contamination of MPs and other pollutants, and the transportation of MPs.

Abstract:As the product of thermal degradation of organic materials, biochar is considered as a potential material for environmental pollution control and ecological remediation. It has been reported that with the properties of multi?pores, large specific surface area, and abundant functional groups, biochar can sequester carbon, immobilize soil contaminants, and improve soil texture, confirming the important role of biochar in soil pollution control and remediation from the physico?chemistry aspect. However, studies on the effects and long?time functions of biochar on soil microbe have just started. This paper offers the information on the effects of biochar on soil microorganisms in recent years both at home and abroad. The altered soil physico?chemical properties, either in terms of an altered resource store (e.g., available C, nutrients, water), or shifts in abiotic factors (e.g., pH, CEC) may result in changes to environmental soil, in terms of increased growth and reproduction of soil bacteria and fungi, causing the changes of the soil microbial community structure and function. Although the advantages of biochar application are obvious, in order to realize large?scale application research on biochar dosage, interaction mechanism between biochar?microorganisms? contaminants, long?term effects of biochar to soil microorganisms and the nutrient cycle need to be investigated systematically.
Biochar alters chemical and microbial properties of microplastic-contaminated soil

Abstract:The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in soils can negatively affect soil biodiversity and function. Soil amendments applied to MP-contaminated soil can alter the overall soil properties and enhance its functions and processes. However, little is known about how soil amendments improve the quality of MP-contaminated soils. Thus, the present study used a microcosm experiment to explore the potential effects of four types of biochar on the chemical and microbial properties of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) MP-contaminated soil under both drought and well-watered conditions. The results show that the biochars altered soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), available phosphorous, and total exchangeable cations (TEC) with some variability depending on the biochar type. Oilseed rape straw (OSR)-derived biochars increased soil pH, EC, and TEC under both water conditions with the highest values of 7.94, 0.54 dS m-1 and 22.0 cmol(+) kg-1, respectively. Soil enzyme activities varied under all treatments; in particular, under drought conditions, the fluorescein diacetate activity increased in soils with high temperature (700 °C) biochar. The application of soft wood pellet biochar (700 °C) to MP-contaminated soil increased urease activity by 146% under well-watered conditions. OSR-derived biochars significantly reduced soil acid phosphatase activity under both water conditions. With biochar supplementation, the diversity indices of the bacterial community increased in well-watered soil but not in soil under drought conditions. The abundance of bacterial phyla, such as Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Dictyoglomi, and Gemmatimonadetes, was relatively high in all treatments. Biochar application resulted in negligible variations in bacterial communities under drought conditions but significant variations under well-watered conditions. The findings of this study imply that biochar can be used as a soil amendment to improve the overall soil quality of MP-contaminated soil, but its impact varies depending on the pyrolysis feedstock and temperature. Thus, selecting a suitable biochar is important for improving the soil quality in MP-contaminated soils.

Abstract:The detrimental effects of microplastics (MPs) on soil microbial and elemental raise significant environmental concerns. The potential of remediation with biochar to mitigate these negative impacts remains an open question. The remediation effects of biochar derived from corn and cotton straw on MPs concerning soil microorganisms and element cycling were investigated. Specifically, biochar induced substantial remediations in microbial community structure following MP exposure, restoring and fortifying the symbiotic network while exerting dominance over microbial community changes. A combined treatment of biochar and MPs exhibited a noteworthy increase in the abundance of NH 4 + , NO 3 − , and available phosphorous by 0.46–2.1 times, reversing the declining trend of dissolved organic carbon, showing a remarkable increase by 0.36 times. This combined treatment also led to a reduction in the abundance of the nitrogen fixation gene nifH by 0.46 times, while significantly increasing the expression of nitrification genes ( amoA and amoB ) and denitrification genes ( nirS and nirK ) by 22.5 times and 1.7 times, respectively. Additionally, the carbon cycle cbbLG gene showed a 2.3-fold increase, and the phosphorus cycle gene phoD increased by 0.1-fold. The mixed treatment enriched element-cycling microorganisms by 4.8–9.6 times. In summary, the addition of biochar repaired the negative effects of MPs in terms of microbial community dynamics, element content, gene expression, and functional microbiota. These findings underscore the crucial role of biochar in alleviating the adverse effects of MPs on microbial communities and elemental cycling, providing valuable insights into sustainable environmental remediation strategies.

Abstract:Biochar has received increasing attention for its multifunctional applications as a soil amendment. The dual effect of biochar on reductive organic pollutants and soil biogeochemical processes under anaerobic environments in parallel has yet to be fully explored. In this study, anaerobic batch experiments were conducted to examine the effect of biochar on both reductive transformation of pentachlorophenol (PCP) and soil redox processes in flooded soil. Compared to biochar-free controls, the reductive dechlorination of PCP was significantly inhibited following biochar addition, with the inhibition degree increased with increasing amount of biochar. Dissimilatory iron and sulfate reduction, as well as the production of methane, were significantly enhanced following biochar addition. The bacterial and archaeal communities showed a functional selection responded to the addition of biochar and PCP, with the core functional groups at the genus level including Dethiobacter, Clostridium, Geosporobacter, Desulfuromonas, Desulfatitalea, and Methanosarcina. These findings indicated that biochar could affect soil microbial redox processes and may act as an electron mediator altering electron distribution from PCP dechlorination to the predominant soil reduction processes, and increase understanding regarding biochar's comprehensive effects on the remediation of natural flooded soil polluted by chlorinated organic pollutants that can be degraded reductively.
Biochar Mitigates the Negative Effects of Microplastics on Sugarcane Growth by Altering Soil Nutrients and Microbial Community Structure and Function

Abstract:Microplastic pollution in sugarcane areas of China is severe, and reducing the ecological risks is critical. Biochar has been widely used in soil remediation. This study aims to explore the effects and mechanisms of microplastics combined with or without biochar on sugarcane biomass, soil biochemical properties in red soil through a potted experiment. The results show that, compared with control (CK), treatments with microplastics alone reduced the dry biomass of sugarcane, soil pH, and nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) contents by an average of 8.8%, 2.1%, 1.1%, and 2.0%, respectively. Interestingly, microplastics combined with biochar could alleviate the negative effects of microplastic accumulation on sugarcane growth and soil quality. There were significant differences in the bacterial community alpha diversity indices and compositions among different treatments. Compared with CK, treatments with microplastics alone obviously decreased the observed operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and the Chao1 and Shannon indices of soil total bacteria (16S rRNA gene-based bacteria) while increasing them in phoD-harboring bacteria. Microplastics combined with biochar treatments significantly increased the abundance of Subgroup_10 for the 16S rRNA gene and treatments with microplastics alone significantly increased the relative abundance of Streptomyces for the phoD gene compared to CK. Moreover, compared with microplastics alone, the treatments with microplastics combined with biochar increased the relative abundance of Subgroup_10, Bacillus, Pseudomonas in soil total bacteria, and Amycolatopsis and Bradyrhizobium in phoD-harboring bacteria, most of which can inhibit harmful bacteria and promote plant growth. Additionally, different treatments also changed the abundance of potential microbial functional genes. Compared to CK, other treatments increased the abundance of aerobic ammonia oxidation and denitrification but decreased the abundance of nitrate respiration and nitrogen respiration; meanwhile, these four functional genes involved in N cycling processes were obviously higher in treatments with microplastics combined with biochar than in treatments with microplastics alone. In conclusion, microplastics combined with biochar could alleviate the negative effects of microplastic accumulation on sugarcane biomass by altering soil nutrients and microbial community structure and function.

Abstract:Biodegradable plastics often degrade into microplastics within the natural environment, where they interact with soil organic matter (SOM). Concurrently, biochar is applied to soil as a photosynthesis-derived negative carbon technology. However, the efficacy of biochar in carbon sequestration may be compromised by the priming effect triggered by the presence of degradable microplastics. This review critically examines the interaction between degradable microplastics and soil organisms and their collective impact on SOM dynamics. It synthesizes current knowledge on the influence of biochar and degradable agricultural films on SOM, the mineralization processes of degradable microplastics, and the resulting stability of SOM. Special attention is given to the priming effect induced by microplastics and the implications of their coexistence with biochar on SOM decomposition. The review underscores the need for further research to elucidate the long-term carbon budget implications of biochar application and the fate of microplastics on carbon pools within biochar-amended soils.

Abstract:In recent years, soil contamination has become a global environmental problem. Biochar is a porous and carbon-rich material produced from pyrolysis of biomass residues from agricultural and forestry production. It can be used to immobilize heavy metals and organic pollutants in soil through adsorption. Here we report results obtained from our recent studies focusing on the interactions between biochar and soil contaminants. Incubation and pot experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of biochar type, application rate, and particle size on soil properties, bioavailability, mobility, and redistribution of the heavy metals in soil and the accumulation of heavy metals in the plants. Batch equilibration method was used to explore the effect of biochar type, aging process, dosage, and soil organic carbon content on adsorption and desorption of organic pollutants (e.g., phthalic acid esters, or PAEs) in soil. Incubation and pot trials were conducted to evaluate the impact of biochar on the degradation and bioavailability of PAEs in soils. Our results demonstrate that biochar can potentially be used as soil amendment for remediation of soils contaminated with heavy metals and organic pollutants. The efficacy of biochar application on immobilization of contaminants varies with the type, application rate, and particle size of biochars, soil properties, and contaminant types.
Combined effect of biochar and soil moisture on soil chemical properties and microbial community composition in microplastic‐contaminated agricultural soil

Abstract:Accumulation of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural environments has caused growing concern in recent years because of its detrimental impacts on soil quality, crop productivity and ecosystem function. This study was conducted to assess the impact of biochar on soil chemical and microbial properties in a MP‐contaminated soil under two moisture regimes. Soil was contaminated with 1% (w/w) of low‐density polyethylene MPs. Four types of standard biochar, that is, oil seed rape (OSR) biochar produced at 550°C (OSR 550) and 700°C (OSR 700) and soft wood pellet (SWP) biochar produced at 550°C (SWP 550) and 700°C (SWP 700), were applied at a rate of 5% (w/w). The control was maintained without MP addition. The samples were incubated in soil with two moisture regimes, that is, at 30% and 70% of the water holding capacity, and the soil chemical and microbiological properties were assessed after 100 days of incubation. OSR biochar application significantly increased soil pH (8.53–8.81) and electrical conductivity (0.51–0.58 dS/m) in both moisture regimes. The effect of biochar application on soil enzyme activity and microbial community composition did not show a clear trend. However, SWP 700 biochar improved soil enzyme activity compared with that of the control and improved bacterial diversity and evenness compared with those of other biochars, which was attributed to the high surface area available for microbial colonization. Low soil moisture content significantly reduced enzyme activity and bacterial richness even with biochar amendment, except for SWP 550 biochar. This study implies the suitability of biochar for improvement of soil quality in MP contaminated soil under both moisture regimes. However, further long‐term studies are needed to get a clear understanding on the impact of different types of biochar on MP‐contaminated soil.

Abstract:Carbofuran (CAS) is one of extensively used carbamate pesticides, which is considered as a derivative or a candidate of carbofuran (CAN) for its lower toxicity and persistence. Nevertheless, CAS could be degraded into its toxic metabolites, imposing potential risks on ecological safety. In this paper, biochars, derived from rice straw (RS), chicken manure (CM), corn straw (CS) and tire rubber (TR), were applied in CAS-contaminated soil to explore their effects on the dissipation of CAS and its metabolites. The dissipation rate of CAS was depressed by the amendment of biochar, mainly because biochar inhibited the hydrolysis of CAS by elevating soil pH value. Nevertheless, CS has efficiently enhanced the dissipation of CAN by almost 2-times for its promotion in hydrolysis and biodegradation. CS and CM improved biodegradation by altering the composition and structure of the microbial communities, exhibiting potential for facilitating bioremediation of CAS and CAN. Moreover, steam activated biochar accelerated the dissipation rate by 1.7–2.9 times and 1.3–2.4 times for CAS and CAN, respectively. This study investigated the effects of biochar on CAS and its toxic metabolites as well as possible governing mechanisms, providing rational instruction for biochar application in ambient atmosphere.

Abstract:Reductive dechlorination is the primary pathway for environmental removal of pentachlorophenol (PCP) in soil under anaerobic condition. This process has been verified to be coupled with other soil redox processes of typical biogenic elements such as carbon, iron and sulfur. Meanwhile, biochar has received increasing interest in its potential for remediation of contaminated soil, with the effect seldom investigated under anaerobic environment. In this study, a 120-day anaerobic incubation experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar on soil redox processes and thereby the reductive dechlorination of PCP under anaerobic condition. Biochar addition (1%, w/w) enhanced the dissimilatory iron reduction and sulfate reduction while simultaneously decreased the PCP reduction significantly. Instead, the production of methane was not affected by biochar. Interestingly, however, PCP reduction was promoted by biochar when microbial sulfate reduction was suppressed by addition of typical inhibitor molybdate. Together with Illumina sequencing data regarding analysis of soil bacteria and archaea responses, our results suggest that under anaerobic condition, the main competition mechanisms of these typical soil redox processes on the reductive dechlorination of PCP may be different in the presence of biochar. In particularly, the effect of biochar on sulfate reduction process is mainly through promoting the growth of sulfate reducer (Desulfobulbaceae and Desulfobacteraceae) but not as an electron shuttle. With the supplementary addition of molybdate, biochar application is suggested as an improved strategy for a better remediation results by coordinating the interaction between dechlorination and its coupled soil redox processes, with minimum production of toxic sulfur reducing substances and relatively small emission of greenhouse gas (CH4) while maximum removal of PCP.

Abstract:Biochars have attracted tremendous attention due to their effects on soil improvement; they enhance carbon storage, soil fertility and quality, and contaminant (organic and heavy metal) immobilization and transformation. These effects could be achieved by modifying soil microbial habitats and (or) directly influencing microbial metabolisms, which together induce changes in microbial activity and microbial community structures. This review links microbial responses, including microbial activity, community structures and soil enzyme activities, with changes in soil properties caused by biochars. In particular, we summarized possible mechanisms that are involved in the effects that biochar-microbe interactions have on soil carbon sequestration and pollution remediation. Special attention has been paid to biochar effects on the formation and protection of soil aggregates, biochar adsorption of contaminants, biochar-mediated transformation of soil contaminants by microorganisms, and biochar-facilitated electron transfer between microbial cells and contaminants and soil organic matter. Certain reactive organic compounds and heavy metals in biochar may induce toxicity to soil microorganisms. Adsorption and hydrolysis of signaling molecules by biochar interrupts microbial interspecific communications, potentially altering soil microbial community structures. Further research is urged to verify the proposed mechanisms involved in biochar-microbiota interactions for soil remediation and improvement.

Abstract:The amendment of biochar for soil bioremediation can improve soil conditions, influence soil microbial community, and achieve co-application of biochar-microbe to promote the removal of pollutants. This paper summarizes the positive effects of biochar on microorganisms, including acting as a shelter, providing nutrients, and improving soil conditions (soil aggregation, pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and enzymatic activity). These effects will cause variations in microbial abundance, activity, and community structure. Biochar can act as an electron mediator to promote electron transfer in the process of microbial degradation. And the application of biochar in soil bioremediation is also introduced. Nevertheless, toxic substances carried by biochar that may threaten microbial community shouldn't be overlooked. With this review, we can better understand biochar's involvement in soil bioremediation, which will help us choose and modify biochar in a targeted manner for the desired purpose in practical applications.

Abstract:Little is known about the effects of biochar on the fate and behavior of micropollutants in soil, especially in the presence of soil macrofauna. Application of the biochar significantly reduced the degradation and mineralization of both pollutants and strongly increased the accumulation of their metabolites in soil. The earthworm had no significant effects on the degradation of parent molecules of the pollutants but it significantly reduced the mineralization of the pollutants independent of the presence of the biochar. Although at an application rate of <1% the biochar strongly sorbed both pollutants, it did not significantly decrease the bioaccumulation of free dichlorophenol and phenanthrene and their metabolites by the earthworm. Our results demonstrate the complex effects of biochar on the fate, transformation, and earthworm bioaccumulation of organic pollutants in soil. They show that biochar application may not be an appropriate strategy for treating soil contaminated with hydrophobic organic pollutants and underline the importance of soil-feeding earthworms in risk assessments of biochar effects on soil remediation.
Biochar Modulates Heavy Metal Toxicity and Improves Microbial Carbon Use Efficiency in Soil

Abstract:Soil organic carbon is essential to improve soil fertility and ecosystem functioning. Soil microorganisms contribute significantly to the carbon transformation and immobilisation processes. However, microorganisms are sensitive to environmental stresses such as heavy metals. Applying amendments, such as biochar, to contaminated soils can alleviate the metal toxicity and add carbon inputs. In this study, Cd and Pb spiked soils treated with macadamia nutshell biochar (5% w/w) were monitored during a 49days incubation period. Microbial phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) were extracted and analysed as biomarkers in order to identify the microbial community composition. Soil properties, metal bioavailability, microbial respiration, and microbial biomass carbon were measured after the incubation period. Microbial carbon use efficiency (CUE) was calculated from the ratio of carbon incorporated into microbial biomass to the carbon mineralised. Total PLFA concentration decreased to a greater extent in metal contaminated soils than uncontaminated soils. Microbial CUE also decreased due to metal toxicity. However, biochar addition alleviated the metal toxicity, and increased total PLFA concentration. Both microbial respiration and biomass carbon increased due to biochar application, and CUE was significantly (p<0.01) higher in biochar treated soils than untreated soils. Heavy metals reduced the microbial carbon sequestration in contaminated soils by negatively influencing the CUE. The improvement of CUE through biochar addition in the contaminated soils could be attributed to the decrease in metal bioavailability, thereby mitigating the biotoxicity to soil microorganisms.
Effects of biodegradable microplastics coexistence with biochars produced at low and high temperatures on bacterial community structure and phenanthrene degradation in soil

Abstract:The increasing use of biodegradable plastics may result in more serious pollution of microplastics which often coexist with biochar in soil, this will affect how organic pollutants move and transform in the soil. This work investigated the effect of biodegradable polybutylene adipate- co -terephthalate (PBAT) coexistence with biochars produced at temperatures of 400 and 700 °C (W4 and W7) on soil bacterial communities and phenanthrene degradation. The results showed that coexistence of PBAT and biochar paticles greatly boosted the relative abundance of Nocardioides while decreased the relative abundance of Sphingomonas as compared to soils with a single addition of PBAT or biochar. Changes in soil Eh values were the most influential factor in bacterial communities (more than 40% contribution). The degradation ratio of phenanthrene when PBAT coexisted with W7 (39.6 ± 3.6%) was not significantly different from the treatment with a single W7 addition (35.0 ± 2.3%, P >0.05), and was related to phenanthrene degradation in the adsorbed state of W7 in soil. In contrast, the degradation ratio of phenanthrene in PBAT coexisting with W4 (35.1 ± 3.5%) was intermediate between that of single PBAT (49.8 ± 0.9%) and W4 (13.7 ± 5.8%) treatments. This was primarily due to changes in the experiment's initial bioavailable phenanthrene content. Furthermore, after the introduction of earthworms, phenanthrene degradation ratio in coexistence treatments were very similar to that described above in the absence of earthworms. Except for two treatments that contain W7, phenanthrene degradation ratio in the other treatments was increased by the presence of earthworms (up to 23%), which is related to the enhanced relative abundance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon-degraders. Our findings indicated that PBAT coexistence with high-temperature or low-temperature biochar had a completely different impact on bacterial communities and phenanthrene degradation in soil.

Abstract:Careful designing of biochar (BC) employing biological and industrial waste materials has gained much attention to improve soil health via reducing the bioavailability of heavy metals (HMs) in the contaminated-soil. Herein, a forty-day pot experiment was conducted to explore the influence of micro plastic (MP) embedded sewage-sludge (SS). The effects of SS and MP dosage ratios (0e15%) on the physicochemical properties of the modified-biochars were also studied with slow-pyrolyzed (SBC-500 degrees C) and flash-pyrolyzed biochar (FSBC-70 0 degrees C). Our investigations found remarkable positive synergistic effects for the SBC-15% involving increased soil pH, CEC, high carbon contents, and alleviation in Cr and Pb leaching than control and FSBC-70 0 degrees C. Besides, SBC-15% containing high carbon functional groups can effectively mitigate the Cr and Pb availability stress by intensifying the adsorption or passivation in the amended-soil, thereby, significantly reducing the Cr and Pb EDTA-extractable contents. Chemical fractionation analyses further confirmed that SBC-15% addition was more helpful for Cr and Pb immobilization and ultimately reducing transfer-rate, bioconcentration-factor, and translocation-factor as compared to FSBC-15% and control due to its higher alkalinity, surface area/porosity, and available carbon functional groups. The maize biomass (root and shoot) increased by more than 50%, and the activities of soil enzymes such as urease, alkaline phosphatase, and glucosidase enzyme activities were also enhanced. This ecologically feasible strategy would pave an efficient way to make full use of the SS and MP for the biochar synthesis with excellent soil remediation performance. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Plant-based biochar was demonstrated promising capability in adsorbing microplastic particles (MPs) within soil porous mediums. However, biochar's function in mitigating MPs' vertical penetration during wetting-drying cycles, typical of seasonal precipitation and evaporation, remains uncertain. Furthermore, few studies have investigated the structures of how biochar combines with soil. This study conducted column tests to assess the MPs retention capabilities of soil-biochar porous media under saturated and wetting-drying conditions. The water retention and hydrophilic properties were investigated to elucidate the impact of wetting-drying cycles. Additionally, different biochar-soil structures were compared to optimise the structural design. Without biochar, wetting-drying cycles resulted in 8.74 % more MPs escaping from samples. However, incorporating 15 % biochar led to only around 2 % more MPs in effluent. Biochar significantly enhanced soil's MP absorption capacity and mitigated the negative effects of wetting-drying cycles. Biochar's alveolate morphology provides ample adsorption sites and creates complex flow paths. The hydrophilic groups of biochar and capillarity by micropores facilitated slower water release during drying, preventing crack propagation and flush on MP particles. This effect was more pronounced with higher biochar content and lower porosity. Moreover, layer structure was found to improve MPs removal, benefiting the long-term performance and management of the biochar functional layer.
