These results suggest that NEP increases with increasing WTDs across global wetlands. Wetlands are strategic areas for carbon uptake, but accurate assessments of their sequestration ability are limited by the uncertainty and variability in their carbon balances. Based on 2385 observations of annual net ecosystem production from global wetlands, we show that the mean net carbon sinks of inland wetlands, peatlands and coastal wetlands are 0.57, 0.29 and 1.88 tons of carbon per hectare per year, respectively, with a mean value of 0.57 tons of carbon per hectare per year weighted by the distribution area of different wetland types. Carbon sinks are mainly in Asia and North America. Within and across wetland types, we find that water table depth (WTD) exerts greater control than climate‐ and ecosystem‐related variables, and an increase in WTD results in a stronger carbon sink. Our results highlight an urgent need to sustain wetland hydrology under global change; otherwise, wetlands are at high risk of becoming carbon sources to the atmosphere.

Abstract:A global gridded net ecosystem exchange (NEE) of CO 2 dataset is vital in global and regional carbon cycle studies. Top-down atmospheric inversion is one of the major methods to estimate the global NEE; however, the existing global NEE datasets generated through inversion from conventional CO 2 observations have large uncertainties in places where observational data are sparse. Here, by assimilating the GOSAT ACOS v9 XCO 2 product, we generate a 10-year (2010–2019) global monthly terrestrial NEE dataset using the Global Carbon Assimilation System, version 2 (GCASv2), which is named GCAS2021. It includes gridded ( 1∘×1∘ ), globally, latitudinally, and regionally aggregated prior and posterior NEE and ocean (OCN) fluxes and prescribed wildfire (FIRE) and fossil fuel and cement (FFC) carbon emissions. Globally, the decadal mean NEE is -3.73±0.52 PgC yr −1 , with an interannual amplitude of 2.73 PgC yr −1 . Combining the OCN flux and FIRE and FFC emissions, the net biosphere flux (NBE) and atmospheric growth rate (AGR) as well as their inter-annual variabilities (IAVs) agree well with the estimates of the Global Carbon Budget 2020. Regionally, our dataset shows that eastern North America, the Amazon, the Congo Basin, Europe, boreal forests, southern China, and Southeast Asia are carbon sinks, while the western United States, African grasslands, Brazilian plateaus, and parts of South Asia are carbon sources. In the TRANSCOM land regions, the NBEs of temperate N. America, northern Africa, and boreal Asia are between the estimates of CMS-Flux NBE 2020 and CT2019B, and those in temperate Asia, Europe, and Southeast Asia are consistent with CMS-Flux NBE 2020 but significantly different from CT2019B. In the RECCAP2 regions, except for Africa and South Asia, the NBEs are comparable with the latest bottom-up estimate of Ciais et al. (2021). Compared with previous studies, the IAVs and seasonal cycles of NEE of this dataset could clearly reflect the impacts of extreme climates and large-scale climate anomalies on the carbon flux. The evaluations also show that the posterior CO 2 concentrations at remote sites and on a regional scale, as well as on vertical CO 2 profiles in the Asia-Pacific region, are all consistent with independent CO 2 measurements from surface flask and aircraft CO 2 observations, indicating that this dataset captures surface carbon fluxes well. We believe that this dataset can contribute to regional- or national-scale carbon cycle and carbon neutrality assessment and carbon dynamics research. Abstract:Net ecosystem exchange of CO2 (NEE) is a useful tool to analyze the carbon balance of different areas. Since it is impossible to measure NEE in-situ at a regional or global scale, this study has conducted a NEE estimation model to map the NEE of global terrestrial systems. By training the model with 2774 series of data collected from the database of AmeriFlux and Fluxnet, and relevant studies, the model has achieved a substantial global NEE estimation with R2 = 0.60, 0.68, and 0.67 for arable land, forest, and grassland systems. According to the estimation, the average annual global NEE was −18.41 billion tons C. Asia was the continent who had the highest NEE (33.93% of global NEE), and forests were the ecosystems who contributed most to global CO2 absorption (51.75% of global NEE). When comparing with the global CO2 emissions, the model results also showed that Asia, North America, and Europe have run out of their ecosystem potential to absorb the CO2 emitted. The countries with top 10 greatest C emission had smaller effective NEEs to deal with their own emitted C except Russia and Canada. Considering the economic contribution of different countries, NEE estimation model could be a helpful tool to achieve a better fairness of controlling C emission tasks by considering both C emission generation and natural C emission handling ability.

Contrasting Ecosystem CO2 Fluxes of Inland and Coastal Wetlands: a Meta‐analysis of Eddy Covariance Data

Abstract:Wetlands play an important role in regulating the atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations and thus affecting the climate. However, there is still lack of quantitative evaluation of such a role across different wetland types, especially at the global scale. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to compare ecosystem CO2 fluxes among various types of wetlands using a global database compiled from the literature. This database consists of 143 site-years of eddy covariance data from 22 inland wetland and 21 coastal wetland sites across the globe. Coastal wetlands had higher annual gross primary productivity (GPP), ecosystem respiration (Re), and net ecosystem productivity (NEP) than inland wetlands. On a per unit area basis, coastal wetlands provided large CO2 sinks, while inland wetlands provided small CO2 sinks or were nearly CO2 neutral. The annual CO2 sink strength was 93.15 and 208.37 g C m(-2) for inland and coastal wetlands, respectively. Annual CO2 fluxes were mainly regulated by mean annual temperature (MAT) and mean annual precipitation (MAP). For coastal and inland wetlands combined, MAT and MAP explained 71%, 54%, and 57% of the variations in GPP, Re, and NEP, respectively. The CO2 fluxes of wetlands were also related to leaf area index (LAI). The CO2 fluxes also varied with water table depth (WTD), although the effects of WTD were not statistically significant. NEP was jointly determined by GPP and Re for both inland and coastal wetlands. However, the NEP/Re and NEP/GPP ratios exhibited little variability for inland wetlands and decreased for coastal wetlands with increasing latitude. The contrasting of CO2 fluxes between inland and coastal wetlands globally can improve our understanding of the roles of wetlands in the global C cycle. Our results also have implications for informing wetland management and climate change policymaking, for example, the efforts being made by international organizations and enterprises to restore coastal wetlands for enhancing blue carbon sinks.
A New Estimation of China’s Net Ecosystem Productivity Based on Eddy Covariance Measurements and a Model Tree Ensemble Approach

Abstract:Accurate assessment of the strength of China's terrestrial ecosystem carbon sink is key to understanding its regional carbon budget. However, large uncertainties in current carbon sink estimations still exist, which hinder the prediction of future climate change trajectories. In this study, we generated a high-resolution (1 km x 1 km) dataset of China's net ecosystem productivity (NEP) in the last decade via a model tree ensemble approach combined with data from 46 flux sites in China and neighboring regions. The upscaling also included detailed information on nitrogen (N) deposition and forest age that have often been neglected in previous studies. The performance of MTE algorithm in simulating NEP at the site level is relatively high for both training (R-2 = 0.81, RMSE = 0.73 gC m(-2) day(-1)) and validation datasets (R-2 = 0.76, RMSE = 0.81 gC m(-2)day(-1)). Our data-driven estimation showed that roughly 70% of the area is a carbon sink, and the largest carbon sinks are found in the southeast and southwest monsoon regions. The total annual NEP in China in the last decade was 1.18 +/- 0.05 Pg C yr(-1), which is similar to the results found by another foundational global-scale study. Yet, the two studies significantly differ in the spatial distribution of carbon sink density. The seasonality of China's NEP is characterized by region-specific kurtosis and skewness in most areas. Furthermore, ecosystem carbon use efficiency (CUE), defined as the annual NEP/GPP ratio, also showed high spatial variation. For example, the Xiaoxing'anling and Changbai Mountains in northeastern China, the eastern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, and bordering areas of the southeast and southwest monsoon regions have a larger CUE than the rest of China. On average, China's terrestrial ecosystem CUE is approximately 0.17. Our data-driven NEP and CUE estimates provide a new tool for assessing China's carbon dioxide flux. Our study also highlights the necessity to incorporate more environmental variables related to vegetation growth and more data derived from flux sites into NEP upscaling to reduce uncertainties in carbon budget estimations.

Abstract:Abstract. Here we present a global and regionally resolved terrestrial net biosphere exchange (NBE) dataset with corresponding uncertainties between 2010–2018: Carbon Monitoring System Flux Net Biosphere Exchange 2020 (CMS-Flux NBE 2020). It is estimated using the NASA Carbon Monitoring System Flux (CMS-Flux) top-down flux inversion system that assimilates column CO2 observations from the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and NASA's Observing Carbon Observatory 2 (OCO-2). The regional monthly fluxes are readily accessible as tabular files, and the gridded fluxes are available in NetCDF format. The fluxes and their uncertainties are evaluated by extensively comparing the posterior CO2 mole fractions with CO2 observations from aircraft and the NOAA marine boundary layer reference sites. We describe the characteristics of the dataset as the global total, regional climatological mean, and regional annual fluxes and seasonal cycles. We find that the global total fluxes of the dataset agree with atmospheric CO2 growth observed by the surface-observation network within uncertainty. Averaged between 2010 and 2018, the tropical regions range from close to neutral in tropical South America to a net source in Africa; these contrast with the extra-tropics, which are a net sink of 2.5±0.3 Gt C/year. The regional satellite-constrained NBE estimates provide a unique perspective for understanding the terrestrial biosphere carbon dynamics and monitoring changes in regional contributions to the changes of atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Abstract:Whether natural wetlands serve as the source or sink of greenhouse gases (GHGs) remains uncertain. Wetlands in China are diverse in type and abundant in quantity and differ greatly in spatial distribution, environmental conditions, and GHG fluxes. However, few studies focused on the differences in GHG emissions from different types of natural wetlands. Here, we adopted strict data collection criteria to create comprehensive and detailed datasets of fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) from the marsh, coastal, lake, and river wetlands in China, and relevant environmental variables. Our study synthesized 265 field observations on GHGs that lasted at least one year (covering both the growing season and non-growing season) from 109 studies, among which CO2 measurements using the opaque chamber method were not included for eliminating the influence of absence of photosynthesis on net CO2 accounting. We found that CH4 contributed the largest warming effect among the three types of GHGs, and coastal and river wetlands respectively acted as the mitigators and motivators of global warming among the four types of wetlands. Correlation and regression analyses suggested that geographic location, soil moisture and organic carbon, and contents of nitrogen, phosphorus, and dissolved oxygen jointly drove wetland GHG fluxes. The comprehensive global warming potential of Chinese natural wetlands was estimated as 427 Tg CO2-equivalents year−1, which might result from increased wetland drainage, reclamation, and external nutrient inputs. This study highlights the incorporation of the full year-round GHG monitoring data without using opaque chambers to measure CO2 flux when extrapolating net GHG emissions and gives implications for natural wetland management and global warming mitigation strategies.

Abstract:Wetlands contain a large proportion of carbon (C) in the biosphere and partly affect climate by regulating C cycles of terrestrial ecosystems. China contains Asia's largest wetlands, accounting for about 10% of the global wetland area. Although previous studies attempted to estimate C budget in China's wetlands, uncertainties remain. We conducted a synthesis to estimate C uptake and emission of wetland ecosystems in China using a dataset compiled from published literature. The dataset comprised 193 studies, including 370 sites representing coastal, river, lake and marsh wetlands across China. In addition, C stocks of different wetlands in China were estimated using unbiased data from the China Second Wetlands Survey. The results showed that China's wetlands sequestered 16.87 Pg C (315.76 Mg C/ha), accounting for about 3.8% of C stocks in global wetlands. Net ecosystem productivity, jointly determined by gross primary productivity and ecosystem respiration, exhibited annual C sequestration of 120.23 Tg C. China's wetlands had a total gaseous C loss of 173.20 Tg C per year from soils, including 154.26 Tg CO2 -C and 18.94 Tg CH4 -C emissions. Moreover, C stocks, uptakes and gaseous losses varied with wetland types, and were affected by geographic location and climatic factors (precipitation and temperature). Our results provide better estimation of the C budget in China's wetlands and improve understanding of their contribution to the global C cycle in the context of global climate change.

Abstract:Global warming, which is mainly caused by greenhouse gases, can greatly aggravate land degradation; therefore, the examination of the NEP (net ecosystem productivity) and the analysis of its response to climate change are very critical for understanding carbon cycling. Based on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer data, meteorological data, and soil organic carbon data, this study examined the NEP from 2000 to 2013 and investigated how ongoing climate change affects the NEP. The study results indicate that the terrestrial ecosystems in China generally act as net carbon sinks with increasing NEP values. The western inland region and part of northeast China mainly act as carbon sources, with the NEP exhibiting an increasing trend, whereas the other regions mainly act as carbon sinks, with the NEP showing a decreasing trend across large areas of southern China, where the most obvious land degradation occurs. Homogeneity and heterogeneity co-occur. The general pattern is that ecosystems with high biomass usually have a high NEP value, acting as high carbon sinks in relatively wet and warm environments, but have a low value and even act as carbon sources in dry and cold environments. Both moderate precipitation and temperature are essential in increasing the NEP, whereas lower precipitation and temperatures might have negative effects. Heterogeneity also widely breaks up the general pattern. Temporally, more NEP grids were positively correlated with changes in temperature and showed stronger correlation coefficients with temperature than with precipitation, but the grids showing a significant correlation with these factors accounted for only a small proportion of the total for both precipitation and temperature.
Global Terrestrial Ecosystem Carbon Flux Inferred from TanSat XCO2 Retrievals

Abstract:TanSat is China’s first greenhouse gases observing satellite. In recent years, substantial progresses have been achieved on retrieving column-averaged CO2 dry air mole fraction (XCO2). However, relatively few attempts have been made to estimate terrestrial net ecosystem exchange (NEE) using TanSat XCO2 retrievals. In this study, based on the GEOS-Chem 4D-Var data assimilation system, we infer the global NEE from April 2017 to March 2018 using TanSat XCO2. The inversion estimates global NEE at −3.46 PgC yr-1, evidently higher than prior estimate and giving rise to an improved estimate of global atmospheric CO2 growth rate. Regionally, our inversion greatly increases the carbon uptakes in northern mid-to-high latitudes and significantly enhances the carbon releases in tropical and southern lands, especially in Africa and India peninsula. The increase of posterior sinks in northern lands is mainly attributed to the decreased carbon release during the nongrowing season, and the decrease of carbon uptakes in tropical and southern lands basically occurs throughout the year. Evaluations against independent CO2 observations and comparison with previous estimates indicate that although the land sinks in the northern middle latitudes and southern temperate regions are improved to a certain extent, they are obviously overestimated in northern high latitudes and underestimated in tropical lands (mainly northern Africa), respectively. These results suggest that TanSat XCO2 retrievals may have systematic negative biases in northern high latitudes and large positive biases over northern Africa, and further efforts are required to remove bias in these regions for better estimates of global and regional NEE.
Preliminary Estimation of the Organic Carbon Pool in China'S Wetlands

Abstract:Accurate estimation of wetland carbon pools is a prerequisite for wetland resource conservation and implementation of carbon sink enhancement plans. The inventory approach is a realistic method for estimating the organic carbon pool in China’s wetlands at the national scale. An updated data and inventory approach were used to estimate the amount of organic carbon stored in China’s wetlands. Primary results are as follows: (1) the organic carbon pool of China’s wetlands is between 5.39 and 7.25 Pg, accounting for 1.3%–3.5% of the global level; (2) the estimated values and percentages of the organic carbon contained in the soil, water and vegetation pools in China’s wetlands are 5.04–6.19 Pg and 85.4%–93.5%, 0.22–0.56 Pg and 4.1%–7.7%, 0.13–0.50 Pg and 2.4%–6.9%, respectively. The soil organic carbon pool of China’s wetlands is greater than our previous estimate of 3.67 Pg, but is lower than other previous estimates of 12.20 and 8–10 Pg. Based on the discussion and uncertainty analysis, some research areas worthy of future attention are presented.

Abstract:NEP refers to the portion of NPP that is available for carbon cycling in terrestrial ecosystems after subtracting photosynthetic carbon consumed by heterotrophic respiration. The amount of the NEP reflects the size of carbon sinks/sources in terrestrial ecosystems, holding great significance for the research of climate change and global carbon cycle. In this study, the NEP of the Zoige grassland wetland ecological function zone (ZGW) on the eastern slope of the Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2020 is estimated by using the improved Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach model for NPP and a statistical model for soil heterotrophic respiration, based on the meteorological data, vegetation data and socioeconomic data. Additionally, the spatio-temporal variations of the NEP are analyzed, and the influences of natural factors and anthropogenic activities on the NEP are investigated. The results indicate that the ZGW overall plays a role as a carbon sink, and the carbon sink area accounts for approximately 99.3% of the whole ZGW. The annual average NEP in the study area is 447.9 g·m−2, showing a gradual increase at a rate of 5.0 g·m−2·a−1, although the increasing trend is not significant. The carbon sink capacity increased in 93.5% of the ZGW, remained relatively stable in 5.9% of the ZGW, and decreased and significantly decreased in 0.6% of the ZGW. Climate warming and humidifying promote the enhancement of carbon sink capacity in the ecosystem of the ZGW, and precipitation is the dominant climatic factor influencing NEP variations. Natural factors are the determinants of NEP variations, while anthropogenic activities play a secondary role. The implementation of ecological restoration and management projects, as well as the continuation of green and coordinated development policies of orderly developing grassland resources, is conducive to enhancing vegetation carbon sink capacity of the ZGW.

Abstract:Wetland soils contain some of the highest stores of soil carbon in the biosphere. However, there is little understanding of the quantity and distribution of carbon stored in our remaining wetlands or of the potential effects of human disturbance on these stocks. Here we use field data from the 2011 National Wetland Condition Assessment to provide unbiased estimates of soil carbon stocks for wetlands at regional and national scales. We find that wetlands in the conterminous United States store a total of 11.52 PgC, much of which is within soils deeper than 30 cm. Freshwater inland wetlands, in part due to their substantial areal extent, hold nearly ten-fold more carbon than tidal saltwater sites—indicating their importance in regional carbon storage. Our data suggest a possible relationship between carbon stocks and anthropogenic disturbance. These data highlight the need to protect wetlands to mitigate the risk of avoidable contributions to climate change.

Abstract:This study resolves the Great Lakes Basin (GLB) hydrologic cycle into its components using stable isotopes of hydrogen and oxygen together with long term meteorological data. The results are used to calculate basinwide Net Primary Production (NPP). Stoichiometric relations of carbon and water during photosynthesis form the basis of computing NPP. Mean annual discharge from the GLB is 29% of the precipitation flux and in δD–δ18O space it has a slope of 5.6, distinctly lower than the 7.5 average slope for precipitation in the basin. Mean annual evaporation flux to the atmosphere from water bodies, soils, and wet canopies is 24% of the precipitation flux. Transpiration however, is the strongest pathway for loss of water from the basin, annually returning 342 Pg (petagram = 1015 g) or 47% of the precipitation flux to the atmosphere.Transpiration and carbon assimilation during photosynthesis are coupled processes. For the GLB vegetation, approximately every mole of CO2 fixation requires 850 mol of H2O loss by transpiration. Therefore, basinwide annual NPP is 0.268 Pg C. Heterotrophic respiration in soils and herbivory annually release 0.138 Pg C to the atmosphere. The surplus NPP or 0.130 Pg C year−1 Net Ecosystem Productivity (NEP) is stored in GLB vegetation, consistent with the postulated missing North American carbon sink.

Abstract:Wetlands play a key role in maintaining ecological balance and climate regulation. However, due to the complex and variable spectral characteristics of wetlands, there are no publicly available global 30-meter time-series wetland dynamic datasets at present. In this study, we present novel global 30 m annual wetland maps (GWL_FCS30D) using time-series Landsat imagery on the Google Earth Engine platform, covering the period of 2000–2022 and containing eight wetland subcategories. Specifically, we make full use of our prior globally distributed wetland training sample pool, and adopt the local adaptive classification and spatiotemporal consistency checking algorithm to generate annual wetland maps. The GWL_FCS30D maps were found to achieve an overall accuracy and Kappa coefficient of 86.95 ± 0.44% and 0.822, respectively, in 2020, and show great temporal variability in the United States and the European Union. We expect the dataset would provide vital support for wetland ecosystems protection and sustainable development.

Abstract:As an important part and the core link of a terrestrial ecosystem, terrestrial vegetation is the main means for human to regulate climate and mitigate the increase in atmospheric CO2 concentration. The Yangtze River Delta (YRD) region is an urban agglomeration with the strongest comprehensive strength among developing countries (China). In the context of global climate change, a rapid, comprehensive, and detailed understanding of the spatio-temporal characteristics and variation tendency of the net ecosystem productivity (NEP) of vegetation and its response to climate during the rapid development of the YRD region is important for protecting ecological land, strengthening land management, and optimizing urban planning. The monthly mean temperature and rainfall data from 63 meteorological stations, the MODIS net primary productivity product, and a land cover product in the YRD region were used to estimate the NEP from 2000 to 2019 based on the soil respiration model, and the correlation between NEP and meteorological factors (such as temperature and rainfall) was analyzed. The results showed that: (1) From 2000 to 2019, the carbon sink area was much larger than the carbon source area in terrestrial vegetation in the Yangtze River Delta, the mean NEP of the vegetation ecosystem in the past 20 years was 253.2 g C·m−2·a−1, and the spatial distribution presented a trend that was higher in the south and lower in the north, higher in the east and lower in the west, and that gradually increased from northwest to southeast; moreover, the NEP of mountain areas was generally higher than that of river courses and urban surroundings. The interannual fluctuation of NEP was small, but presented a slightly increasing trend, and the interannual variation of NEP was significantly correlated with the maximum NEP in this region. (2) The carbon sink capacity of different vegetation cover types was (from strong to weak): forestlands > grasslands > wetlands ≈ croplands. (3) The area with the NEP change rate (θslope) > 0 accounted for 69.0%; however, there was certain spatial difference, the proportions of the areas with θslope Zhejiang Province > Jiangsu Province ≈ Anhui Province. (4) There was a correlation between NEP and the annual mean temperature and annual precipitation in some regions.

Abstract:Wetlands regulate the balance of global organic carbon. Small changes in the carbon stocks of wetland ecosystem play a crucial role in the regional soil carbon cycle. However, an accurate estimation of carbon stocks is still be debated for China’s wetlands ecosystem due to the limitation of data collection and methodology. Here, we investigate the soil organic carbon (SOC) storage in a 1-m depth in China’s palustrine wetlands. A total of 1383 sample data were collected from palustrine wetlands in China. The data sources are divided into three parts, respectively, data collection from published literature, data from books, and actual measurement data of sample points. The results demonstrate that there is considerable SOC storage in China’s palustrine wetlands (9.945 Pg C), primarily abundant in the northeast, northwest arid and semi-arid as well as Qinghai-Tibet Plateau regions. The SOC density in per unit area soil was higher in the wetland area of northeast, southwest and Qinghai-Tibet plateau. Within China terrestrial scale, the temperature and precipitation differences caused by latitude were the main environmental factors affecting the organic carbon content. Furthermore, except for the southeast and south wetland region, SOC content decreased with depth.
