Abstract:Learning carbon emissions from consumption perspective is helpful to realize carbon emission reduction. In power system, carbon emission flow conception has been proposed to calculate carbon emissions associated with electrical consumption. In this paper, a transaction based calculation model is proposed to handle carbon emissions calculation in hybrid market. The proposed method takes difference between bilateral and pool transactions into consideration. Firstly, carbon emissions associated with network losses are allocated to individual transactions according to their contribution to branch loss. Then, separation of bilateral and pool transactions is realized by subtracting network losses from original network. Finally, rest carbon emissions are further allocated to individual transactions in lossless network derived from original lossy network. Combining previous calculation processes, carbon emission for each load is obtained. Results can provide consumers with carbon emission information associated with their consumed electricity and promote low-carbon electricity development. Results from a case study show feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed model.

Abstract:Currently, in China’s power grid, the accounting of carbon emissions has shortcomings such as unclear accounting boundaries, slow updating of carbon emission factors (EFs), and a lack of spatiotemporal characteristics. In this study, a dynamic accounting model for carbon emission was constructed based on carbon flow theory and the QIO (Quasi-Input-Output) model using the transmission side, the substation side, and the distribution side as accounting nodes. By utilizing the electricity metering data and carbon EF on the input side of the node, the total carbon emissions flowing into the node could be calculated. Furthermore, based on the electricity metering data on the output side of the node, the carbon emissions and carbon EF flowing out of the node could be calculated. The accounting results of carbon emissions and carbon EF are characterized by flexibility and dynamicity in both spatial and temporal dimensions. Finally, the practicality of the method has been demonstrated through a substation node. The accounting model has a positive impact on accurate carbon emission accounting for the power grid, better tracing of carbon emissions, and effective user guidance on active carbon emission reduction.

Abstract:In a dual-carbon context, multi-energy coupling technology can absorb wind and solar energy, and carbon trading can control carbon emissions, thus accelerating the process of achieving 'carbon neutrality'. This paper proposes an integrated energy system scheduling model to address the impacts of carbon trading prices, wind power, solar power, load, and other uncertainties on energy scheduling. A technique for demand response based on carbon trading price is proposed to minimize the impact of price fluctuations caused by carbon trading. The model considers factors such as equipment operating costs, carbon trading costs, demand response costs, and wind and solar abandonment costs. Multiple energy storage technologies are utilized to enhance the flexibility of the dispatch strategy. The article introduces information gap decision theory to solve the model for multi-energy scheduling, considering its economy and robustness. The scheduling scenarios for a typical day are analyzed under risk-averse and risk-seeking strategies. The results demonstrate that the proposed method reduces the total cost by 26.3% compared to the baseline scenario, validating the effectiveness of the proposed scheduling strategy.

Abstract:Carbon emission accounting is the premise and basis for measuring the current carbon emissions of regions and enterprises and formulating low-carbon development strategies and low-carbon development goals. China's carbon neutrality goal has accelerated the low-carbon transformation of the power system, and the construction of a new power system with a gradually increasing proportion of new energy will put forward new requirements for power carbon emission reduction and its accounting methods. Firstly, this study sorts out the carbon emission accounting methods of each link of power system source, grid, and load. Secondly, the study analyzes the requirements of power interconnection, large-scale development of demand response, and other factors on the spatio-temporal accuracy of electricity carbon emission accounting under the background of variable renewable energy system construction. Finally, through model construction and empirical research, the accounting results of electricity carbon emissions at different time scales are compared, and the results show that with the increase of the proportion of variable renewable energy in the power system, the carbon emission accounting method with higher time accuracy is adopted to allocate the carbon emission responsibility of users' electricity carbon emissions more fairly.

Abstract:Power sector is responsible for about 40% of the total CO2emissions in the world and plays a leading role in climate change mitigation. In this study, measures that lower CO2emissions from the supply side, demand side, and power grid are discussed, based on which, an integrated optimization model of CO2mitigation (IOCM) is proposed. Virtual energy, referring to energy saving capacity in both demand side and the power grid, together with conventional energy in supply side, is unified planning for IOCM. Consequently, the optimal plan of energy distribution, considering both economic benefits and mitigation benefits, is figured out through the application of IOCM. The results indicate that development of demand side management (DSM) and smart grid can make great contributions to CO2mitigation of power sector in China by reducing the CO2emissions by 10.02% and 12.59%, respectively, in 2015, and in 2020.

Abstract:The carbon emission embodied in trade is fundamental for allocation of responsibility between producers and consumers. This paper quantitatively analyzes embodied carbon emissions along the life cycle of electricity supply, based on network theory. A modified carbon emission flow model is established, based on life cycle assessment considering power losses. There is also a case study of China's interregional electricity supply system in 2010, focusing on two carbon emission carriers, electricity coal transportation and electricity transmission. Results show that the total carbon emission flow reached 169.355 MtCO2eq, i.e., 4.67% of the life cycle carbon emission. Of this, 61.1% was carried by electricity coal transportation before power generation and transmission, owing to an uneven distribution of coal resources. The eastern and southern regions are the major net sinks of carbon emission flows, representing 52.9% and 27.8% of the total, respectively, because of their enormous energy imports. In contrast, the Sanxi region and central China are major net sources of carbon emission flow. The proposed model may help allocate environmental responsibility among different regions, to guarantee balanced trans-regional development.

Abstract:Considering the impractical direct participation of large number of end-consumers in the carbon emissions trading (CET) market, a distributed interactive optimization framework including the integrated energy supplier and end-consumers is proposed under the ladder-type carbon trading mechanism. A hierarchical Shapley based energy-carbon pricing strategy is developed to reasonably share the energy-carbon costs among end-users, giving incentive to end-users who respond to prices and achieve the participation in CET market. To reduce the costs of carbon emissions and energy consumption, the flexibility of both supplier and end-users are fully explored. Furthermore, the distributed alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) method with variable penalty parameters is employed to achieve the coordinated optimization with only limited and necessary information exchanged. Simulation results indicate that the framework proposed can encourage both the source and load to participate in energy-carbon market to reduce energy-carbon costs.

Abstract:To meet the demand for constructing a market mechanism that adapts to the integrated energy system and promotes market-oriented reforms in the energy sector, in-depth research on integrated energy trading strategies is required. This study focused on the integrated energy trading problem and clarify the relationships among participants in the integrated energy market. A regional integrated energy system model was established that enables trading of electricity, gas, heat, and cold, and propose a integrated energy trading strategy based on the carbon emissions/green certificate equivalence interaction. Firstly, the trading process of carbon emissions and green certificates, the underlying representation of green attributes, and market transaction prices are analyzed. Combining with a tiered carbon trading system that includes rewards and penalties, a carbon emissions/green certificate equivalence interaction mechanism is constructed. Secondly, the paper utilized the flexible characteristics of loads within the industrial park to establish a integrated energy demand response model for electricity, heat, and cold. Finally, with the objective of minimizing regional operating costs, a integrated energy trading model considering the carbon emissions/green certificate equivalence interaction mechanism was developed. In the simulation, the operating cost of the system is reduced by 4%, and the carbon emission is reduced by 11.4%, which verifies the effectiveness of the model.

Abstract:The power industry is the largest industry for coal consumption and carbon emission in China. Real-time, accurate, and comprehensive measurement of electric power carbon emission is the basis and premise for estimating the potential of electric power carbon emission reduction, incentivizing power consumers to reduce carbon emission, and supporting the data foundation of carbon markets. Therefore, based on the “three abilities” principle of “measurability, reportability, and verifiability” proposed by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, a carbon measurement method for the whole chain of the power system is proposed. The framework is based on the theory of the carbon emission flow for the power system and realizes the “minute-level” real-time carbon measurement and “consumer-level” precise carbon measurement on the generation-transmissionload sides. On this basis, the carbon measurement system for the whole chain of the power system is designed. The basic concept and implementation form of the power carbon meter system are introduced in detail. The simulation verification is carried out based on the actual system operation data and load data of Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, China. The simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. Finally, the key issues that need to be further studied in the field of carbon measurement of power system are prospected.

Abstract:Nearly 40 % current global annual energy-related CO2 emissions come from the fossil fuel-dominated power sector. Accurately accounting for carbon emissions in power systems from the consumption-based perspective is crucial for achieving the low-carbon power transition. Consumption-based carbon accounting has emerged as a major research focus, which aids in the implementation of targeted measures such as low-carbon demand response and dispatch. Choosing an appropriate method to account carbon emission needs thorough consideration of characteristics of various methods. There still lacks a systematic review that concludes the essence and application status of these methods, as well as comparing their advantages and disadvantages. To address this gap, a consumption-based carbon accounting framework for power systems is proposed. This framework groups four typical methods into two perspectives: Attributional methods and consequential methods. The principles, calculation approaches, and research application status of these methods are comprehensively summarized in a transparent, integrated and comparative manner, which makes progress in two critical limitations: (i) temporal and spatial granularity, and (ii) consideration of the actual topology and operational constraints of the power grid. As improvements in the transparency and quality of electricity data and expansion of application scenarios, the flexibility and applicability of the framework will continue to improve to achieve the unity of efficiency and fairness. The proposed framework can serve as a valuable guide to conducting research and exploration on low-carbon energy management, policy and regulatory decisions and to inform the development of effective strategies for the low-carbon transition of power systems.

Abstract:Peer-to-peer energy trading among multi-energy microgrids is a promising pathway to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, combat climate change, and promote sustainable development. This study proposes a multi-energy trading strategy for multi-energy microgrids that considers carbon tax policies to boost the low-carbon management of multi-energy microgrid clusters. First, a carbon emission accounting model with energy-carbon coupling is constructed to clarify the carbon emission transfer generated by energy transactions among multiple agents and to achieve accurate accounting of carbon emissions from each multi-energy microgrid. Second, the Nash-Harsanyi bargaining game theory is used to establish an energy trading alliance for multi-energy microgrid clusters. A profit allocation mechanism is designed to reflect the marginal contribution of each player to the economic and environmental effectiveness of the alliance. Finally, different carbon emission accounting methods and profit allocation mechanisms are compared. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the carbon emissions accounting model and the proposed energy trading strategy. The low-carbon scheduling framework among the multi-energy microgrids generated an economic gain of $ 1376.44 and 12.60 t carbon savings.

Towards Carbon-Free Electricity: A Flow-Based Framework for Power Grid Carbon Accounting and Decarbonization

Abstract:This paper introduces a comprehensive framework aimed at advancing research and policy development in the realm of decarbonization within electric power systems. The framework focuses on three key aspects: carbon accounting, carbon-aware decision-making, and carbon-electricity market design. It addresses existing problems, methods, and proposes solutions. In contrast to traditional pool-based emissions models, our framework proposes a novel flow-based emissions model. This model incorporates the underlying physical power grid and power flows, allowing for accurate carbon accounting at both temporal and spatial scales. This, in turn, facilitates informed decision-making to achieve grid decarbonization goals. The framework is built on a flow-based accounting methodology and utilizes the carbon-aware optimal power flow (C-OPF) technique as a theoretical foundation for decarbonization decision-making. Additionally, the paper explores the potential design of carbon-electricity markets and pricing mechanisms to incentivize decentralized decarbonization actions. The critical issues of data availability, infrastructure development, and considerations of fairness and equity are also discussed. This paper seeks to advance scholarly understanding and foster progress toward achieving sustainable and carbon-free electric power systems.

Abstract:With the promotion of distributed energy trading and the transformation of power system operation mode, prosumers in the carbon and electricity markets face new opportunities and challenges. This paper proposes a peer-to-peer transaction platform to promote renewable energy consumption and carbon emission reduction, including multiple types of loads, coal-fired units, and microgrid prosumers. The carbon-emitting members of power generation and demand sides in the electricity market are introduced into the carbon market, and their carbon cost model is established. To guide consumption behavior of demand side, the user utility model based on electricity consumption is built to reduce carbon emissions. With the goal of optimizing the generation cost, user utility, and network fees, the distributed optimal scheduling model is established to recover the network fees. Finally, the alternating direction method of multipliers is used to solve this problem and protect transaction privacy. The results indicate that introducing carbon trading at the power generation and demand sides can promote the shift of members' production behavior from high-carbon emission industries to low-carbon ones. Additionally, an appropriate network fee mechanism and unit fee can guide market members to adjust their trading behavior adaptively and help the power grid recover costs.

Abstract:As the international community attaches importance to environmental and climate issues, carbon dioxide emissions in various countries have been subject to constraints and limits. The carbon trading market, as a market tool to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, has gone through a development process from a pilot carbon market to a national carbon market in China. At present, the industries included in the national carbon market are mainly the electric power industry, and the carbon emissions of the electric power industry account for about 40% of the national carbon emissions. According to the construction history of foreign carbon markets, China's future carbon quota allocation will gradually transition from free allocation to auction allocation, and the auction mechanism will bring a heavy economic burden to the electric power industry, especially the thermal power generation industry. Therefore, this study takes Guangdong Province as an example to optimize the power generation mix with the objective of minimizing the total economic cost after the innovative introduction of the carbon quota auction mechanism, constructs an optimization model of the power generation mix based on the auction ratio by comprehensively applying the system dynamics model and the multi-objective linear programming model, systematically researches the power generation structure under different auction ratios with the time scale of months, and quantitatively evaluates the economic inputs needed to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions. The results of the study show that after comprehensively comparing the total economic cost, renewable energy development, and carbon emissions, it is the most scientific and reasonable to set the auction ratio of carbon allowances at 20%, which achieves the best level of economic and environmental benefits.

Abstract:As the penetration of global new energy into power systems increases, the impact of carbon trading on energy systems continues to grow. Therefore, it is crucial to study the effects of carbon trading mechanisms on the operational characteristics of power systems that include new energy sources. This paper focuses on China, the world's largest energy-consuming economy, and proposes a multi-time-scale optimization scheduling method for a Combined Cooling, Heating, and Power (CCHP) system that considers a reward-penalty tiered carbon trading mechanism. This method effectively enhances the economic, environmental, and stability performance of the CCHP system. Firstly, the relationship between different carbon trading mechanisms and carbon trading volumes is analyzed to identify the carbon trading mechanism with the highest correlation to economic efficiency. Based on this analysis, a carbon trading model is introduced into the system's economic dispatch strategy, constructing an economic model for the CCHP system under the influence of the carbon trading mechanism. While considering economic efficiency, this study also aims to improve system stability by proposing a multi-time multi-layer rolling optimization scheduling method. This method adjusts equipment output to respond to random fluctuations caused by uncertainties in energy sources and loads. The optimization results of the case study show that the introduction of the reward-penalty tiered carbon trading mechanism can reduce the carbon emissions of the park and improve economic performance. Additionally, the multi-time multi-layer rolling optimization scheduling effectively mitigates random fluctuations in supply and demand, ensuring stable system operation.

Abstract:The power industry is a major contributor to carbon dioxide (CO 2) emission, which accounting for 40% of total domestic carbon emission. Based on the carbon emission accounting method, this paper conducts carbon emission accounting for a number of power generation enterprises, analyses and concludes that the carbon quota allocation is being tightened year by year, proposed countermeasures and emission reduction routes in terms of carbon asset management and carbon reduction technology research. According to the actual situation of a coal-fired power plant in Anhui province, different carbon reduction routes are developed, among which photovoltaic power generation project has the most impressive economic benefits, but carbon capture project has the largest carbon reduction benefits. Under the premise of similar initial investment between the two projects, the carbon reduction brought by the latter is 5 times that of the former. It is suggested to choose the "new energy power generation+carbon capture and utilization" coupling technical route, which can improve the flexible operation of thermal power units and the absorption rate of new energy, and achieve efficient decarbonization. It provides a sustainable development technical route with both economic and environmental benefits for the low-carbon process.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel Peer-to-Peer (P2P) joint electricity and carbon (E&C) trading model to co-optimize the energy and carbon emissions permit transactions considering the trading preferences in the distribution network. To realize the secure and low-carbon network operation, a decomposable carbon-aware distribution locational marginal pricing (CDLMP)-based operation service pricing scheme of the distribution system operator (DSO) is proposed to guide the P2P transactions among prosumers. In practice, the coordination between the P2P market and the DSO is cast as a bi-level optimization. In the upper level, the network operation optimization of the DSO is modeled as a carbon-aware optimal power flow (COPF) problem based on a carbon emission flow model to ensure the security of network operation and derive the CDLMP. In the lower level, a decentralized P2P joint E&C trading is modeled to simultaneously clear energy and carbon permit. Later, this paper develops an l(p)-Box ADMM method to relax the binary variables originating from the peer-matching process of the carbon trading. Finally, a novel demurrage protocol is designed to facilitate the convergence of the bi-level interaction with an incentive for trading adjustments. Case studies illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in motivating grid-friendly and low-carbon P2P trading.
