Abstract:Mesoporous structure is important to promote mass transport and active site utilization of zeolites when used in reactions involving bulky molecules. However, their conventional hydrothermal synthesis is energy and labor intensive, requiring high-pressure operation, and lengthy heating a huge amount of alkaline liquid. We successfully synthesized new mesoporous zeolites, Meso-ZSM-5, via solid-state crystallization of dry aluminosilicate nanogels. Neighbor developing nanocrystals further joint at edges, creating connected, inter-lattice mesoscale pathway in the finished single crystalline zeolites. Palladium was further loaded on these zeolites to form a bi-functional catalyst (Pd/Meso-ZSM-5). When used in the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol, a major bio-oil compound with disappointing conversion and severe coking issue over many HDO catalysts, Pd/Meso-ZSM-5 exhibits superior guaiacol conversion and product distribution when compared with those supported on conventional microporous ZSM-5 counterparts. This is attributed to the improved diffusion and accessibility of active sites inside Meso-ZSM-5 with its unique hierarchically porous structure. Ring saturated hydrocarbons are largely produced at 200 °C when hydrogenation dominates while alkaylated aromatics become major HDO products as deoxygenation becomes favorable at 250 °C. These encouraging results may ignite the wide use of these mesoporous zeolites in many other reactions in both traditional fossil fuel and emerging renewable energy fields.

Abstract:Bio-oils derived from the pyrolysis of lignin-based biomass often contain a variety of oxygenated compounds, which can compromise their usefulness as a fuel. To improve the quality of bio-oil, catalytic hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is a crucial step that removes oxygen from the oil in the form of water. In this study, we showed that MFI nanosheets are excellent supports for Ru-catalysts. We synthesized highly crystalline MFI nanosheets using a simple hydrothermal seeding procedure; the final material was obtained in 56 h of crystallization. We investigated the activity of Ru supported on different materials. Our findings indicated that Ru supported on hierarchical MFI demonstrated excellent activity in HDO of guaiacol. Our results demonstrated that Ru/ZNS-56 achieved nearly 100% selectivity towards cyclohexane under mild conditions (200 °C, 50 bar H2, 1 h).
Highly Dispersed CrOx Nanoparticle-Modified NaZSM-5 for Dehydration of Methanol to Dimethyl Ether

Abstract:In this work, CrOx nanoparticle-and H+-modified NaZSM5 was prepared by impregnating in chromium nitrite aqueous solution to form Cr/HNaZSM-5 composites. They were characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), ultraviolet- visible (UV-vis), XPS, 29Si and 27Al MAS NMR, NH3-(CO2-) TPD, and N2 adsorption/desorption measurements, revealing that the Cr/ HNaZSM-5 composites possessed moderate surface acidity and basicity due to the Cr species or H+ partly substituting for the counter Na+ and highly dispersed CrOx nanoparticles on zeolites. The obtained composites thus provided promoting performance for catalyzing methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether with >90% conversion and ca. 100% selectivity at a lower reaction temperature. The promoted performance comes from acidic and basic sites for activating methanol to produce CH3+ and CH3O- intermediates, respectively. Moreover, as the catalyst works in succession over 500 h, the reactivity abatement is not found, suggesting excellent running stability.

Abstract:Mo 2 /SBA-15 with high stability and dispersion were prepared by employing MoCl 5 and dicyandiamide as Mo and C/N sources, respectively. Mo 2 N was in situ formed while dicyandiamide was converted to N-doped carbon (NC) during the carbonization process under H 2 at an elevated temperature. The generation of ultrafine Mo 2 N nanoparticles (NPs) is attributed to N-doped carbon species around Mo 2 N NPs, which prevents the aggregation of Mo 2 N NPs at high carbonization temperature. Mo 2 /SBA-15 catalysts exhibit high hydrodeoxygenation activity and aromatic compound selectivity. Product distribution is heavily influenced by the conditions under which the reactions occur. High pressure and elevated temperature are optimal for the formation of aromatic products. At 380 °C and 2 MPa, the selectivity to aromatic products reached up to 92%, with the guaiacol conversion reaching 99%.

Abstract:Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) is one of the effective methods to upgrade biomass pyrolysis oil, but the development of a low-cost, high-performance HDO catalyst still faces enormous challenges. In this work, a facile and eco-friendly approach is developed to synthesize the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst. Structure and acidity of the catalyst can be controlled by simply adjusting the proportions of ammonia solution and the silicon to aluminum ratio, which are closely related to the performance of the catalyst. Experimental results reveal that the Ni2 HZSM-5 catalyst with Si/Al = 85 under NH3·H2O/Ni = 14 exhibits the highest activity of 98% guaiacol conversion, along with a 78.8% yield of cyclohexane (reaction conditions: 300 °C, 3 MPa H2). In addition, the guaiacol reaction network is provided.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene in the presence of CO2 was investigated over CrOx catalysts supported on ZSM-5 with different crystallite sizes, including nanometer, submicron and micrometer. These catalysts behave differently in the dehydrogenation reaction, but no relationship between the activity and crystallite size of ZSM-5 was found. XPS, UV-vis, laser Raman and HR-TEM studis show that the better activity comes from better CrOx dispersion on ZSM-5 surface. The characterization results of ZSM-5 supports by N-2 adsorption, SEM, XRD, XRF, Al-27 and Si-29 MAS NMR reveal that the difference of the dispersion is associated with their surface properties, not with the textural ones. Silanols on the surface play an important role in dispersing the CrOx active species. Silanol nests are more helpful in efficient CrOx dispersion than terminal silanols, which subsequently result in higher dehydrogenation activity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In this work, a strategy for rational design of high-performance heterogenous supported Ru nanocatalysts over mixed metal oxides for aqueous phase partial hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol in the batch reactor was developed taking advantage of supramolecular structure of Zn-Al layered double hydroxides (LDHs) with different interlayer anions. It was interestingly found that in the case of phosphotungstate intercalated ZnAl-LDH as the support precursor, strong interactions between Ru species and intercalated LDH-derived mixed metal oxide supports could be formed, in addition to the formation of surface reductive ZnWOx component and P-O species. Notably, as-fabricated supported Ru nanocatalyst showed much higher activity in the aqueous phase HDO of guaiacol to produce cyclohexanol at an extraordinarily low Ru/guaiacol molar ratio of 0.0009, along with a higher cyclohexanol yield of ∼86% under reaction conditions (250 °C, 2.0 MPa initial H2 pressure), compared to other two supported Ru ones over mixed metal oxides derived from tungstate- and nitrate-intercalated ZnAl-LDH precursors (cyclohexanol yield of 29.7 and 10.1%, respectively). Studies on structure-property correlations revealed that surface defective and acidic sites facilitated the activation of guaiacol and phenol intermediate, thereby enabling the catalyst with a strong ability to break Cring−OCH3 bond and promote the ring hydrogenation. This finding provides a promising way to tune surface structures of metal-based catalysts for the upgrading of biomass.

Abstract:Hierarchically porous SAPO-11 zeolite (H-SAPO-11) is rationally synthesized from a starting silicoaluminophosphate gel in the presence of polyhexamethylene biguanidine as a mesoscale template. The sample is well characterized by XRD, N-2 sorption, SEM, TEM, NMR, XPS, NH3-TPD, and TG techniques. The results show that the sample obtained has good crystallinity, hierarchical porosity (mesopores at ca. 10 nm and macropores at ca. 50-200 nm), high BET surface area (226 m(2)/g), large pore volume (0.25 cm(3)/g), and abundant medium and strong acidic sites (0.36 mmol/g). After loading Pt (0.5 wt.%) on H-SAPO-11 by using wet impregnation method, catalytic hydroisomerization tests of n-dodecane show that the hierarchical Pt/SAPO-11 zeolite exhibits high conversion of n-dodecane and enhanced selectivity for branched products as well as reduced selectivity for cracking products, compared with conventional Pt/SAPO-11 zeolite. This phenomenon is reasonably attributed to the presence of hierarchical porosity, which is favorable for access of reactants on catalytically active sites. The improvement in catalytic performance in long-chain paraffin hydroisomerization over Pt/SAPO-11-based catalyst is of great importance for its industrial applications in the future. Boosting the Catalytic Activity and Stability of Ru Metal Clusters in Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol through MWW Zeolite Pore Constraints

Abstract:Liquid-phase hydrodeoxygenation (HDO), catalyzed by metal or metal-acid sites, provides an effective catalytic strategy to remove oxygen-containing functionalities of lignin-derived phenolic compounds on the route to fuels and chemicals. Developing the catalyst with high activity and stability is crucial for such a chemical process but still remains a significant challenge. In this contribution, highly dispersed subnanometric Ru metal clusters (<1.5 nm) encapsulated in the cavities of MWW zeolites, including HMCM-22 and its siliceous analog ITQ-1, have been developed for the HDO of guaiacol, an important lignin-derived phenolic monomer, in an apolar liquid phase under mild conditions (160 °C, 3 MPa H2). We validate the effective encapsulation of Ru metal clusters in ITQ-1 and HMCM-22 zeolite cavities via complementary characterization methods. The detailed reaction pathways of the HDO of guaiacol are depicted by using guaiacol, phenol, and anisole as reactants. The subnanometric Ru metal clusters confined in MWW zeolite thin layers (20–30 nm in thickness) show remarkable enhancement in HDO activity compared to the large metal particles. The close proximity between Ru metal clusters and Brønsted acid sites (BAS) confined in zeolite constraints delivers a synergistic effect, leading to an additional enhancement in catalytic activity as well as product selectivity. The super stability of the ultrafine Ru metal clusters against sintering and leaching after successive catalytic runs is achieved. The well-defined mono- or bifunctional Ru-containing MWW zeolite catalysts enable the fundamental understanding of HDO of lignin-derived phenolic compounds in the apolar liquid phase and also provide a prototype for the design of superior catalysts for other energy-related transformations.

Abstract:An imidazolium-based ionic liquid (IL) was employed and modified by sodium lignosulfonate (LnNa) to synthesize hierarchical ETS-10 zeolite with porous structure, morphology and surface properties effectively adjusted. The template and structure-directing effects of both IL and LnNa proved to be well maintained after modification. And more importantly, the unique molecular recognition of LnNa was preserved well, while the aggressiveness of LnNa implementing through interaction with other inorganic species can be efficiently suppressed. This led to the formation of hierarchical ETS-10 zeolite with not only high crystallinity and structure integrity but also enhanced catalytic performance in aqueous-phase biomass conversion. Thus, for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation, a notable conversion (92.8%) and cyclohexane yield (89.7%) can be acquired. This remarkable catalytic reactivity should be owing to its distinguished analogous molecular recognition pattern, promoted crystallinity, modified morphology and porous structure, and what’s more, the strengthened acid property.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of CO2 over zeolite-based catalysts has been deemed as a promising route and extensively investigated, while many issues remain intractable. Herein, for the first time, the novel AFX-type zeolite SAPO-56 was developed and impregnated with Cu nanoparticles to construct the bifunctional catalyst for further promoting CO2 transformation. By a systematically comparative analysis on the physicochemical properties and catalytic performance of different catalysts, the corresponding catalytic mechanism for a highly efficient methanol synthesis process from CO2 was comprehensively understood. The results showed that up to 16.4 % of CO2 can be converted into methanol with a relatively high selectivity of 80.9 % via 5% Cu/SAPO-56 catalysts at 280 degrees C though the formate activation pathway. This may be directly related to the specific Lewis acid sites (LAS) derived from the EFAl (extra framework aluminum) species located in the six-membered rings of SAPO-56 that endows it with distinguished adsorption capability of CO2. Furthermore, the copper nanoparticles that are highly dispersed on the surface or in the porous channel of SAPO-56 zeolite facilitate the ease of CO2 activation. Besides, the introduced hierarchical structure was considered to have played an indispensable role in improving methanol productivity. Meanwhile, all its own multiple superiorities also ensure Cu/SAPO-56 a remarkable stability, indicating the great potential for practical and industrial application.

Abstract:A series of SBA-15 with varying textural and surface properties were systematically prepared by post-synthesis and followed by modification with chromium oxide using incipient wetness impregnation method. They were characterized by SAXS, XRD, N2 adsorption, XPS, 29Si MAS NMR, TG, UV-vis and Raman. The catalytic performances of these CrOx supported catalysts in ethane dehydrogenation in the presence of CO2 were investigated. The amount of silanols on SBA-15 surface was found to be crucial for high activity in ethane dehydrogenation. The surface silanols can be eliminated by calcination at high temperature, and recovered by rehydroxylation with diluted H2O2. High catalytic activity comes from good dispersion of CrOx species, which can only be obtained on the silanol-abundant surface.
The Synthesis of Co-Doped Sapo-5 Molecular Sieve and Its Performance in the Oxidation of Cyclohexane with Molecular Oxygen

Abstract:Silicoaluminophosphate (SAPO) molecular sieves doped with cobalt (Co-SAPO-5) were synthesized hydrothermally with different concentrations of Co. Each sample was characterized by X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, scanning electron microscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, temperature-programmed desorption of NH3 (NH3-TPD), and infrared spectrascopy of adsorbed pyridine (Py-IR). The results showed that Co was highly dispersed in the Co-SAPO-5 samples. In addition, a part of the Co content had been incorporated into the SAPO-5 framework, while the remainder existed on the surface as extra-framework Co. The surface areas of the Co-SAOP-5 samples were similar to the SAPO-5 sample. However, the pore volumes of the Co-SAOP-5 samples were lower than that of the SAOP-5 sample. As the concentration of Co increased, the pore volume gradually decreased because extra-framework cobalt oxide was present on the catalyst surface. NH3-TPD and Py-IR results revealed that the amount of Brønsted acid and the total amount of acid for the Co-SAPO-5 samples were higher than that for the SAPO-5 sample. These values were also higher for samples with higher Co content. The catalytic activity of the Co-SAPO-5 samples was evaluated for the oxidation of cyclohexane with molecular oxygen. When Co was added to the SAPO-5 catalyst, the catalytic activity of the Co-SAPO-5 catalysts improved. In addition, the conversion of cyclohexane increased as the Co content in the Co-SAPO-5 catalysts increased. However, with a high conversion of cyclohexane (>6.30%), the total selectivity of cyclohexanone (K) and cyclohexanol (A) decreased sharply. The K/A ratio ranged from 1.15 to 2.47. The effects of reaction conditions (i.e., reaction temperature, reaction time, initial oxygen pressure, and the catalyst amount) on the performance of the Co-SAPO-5 catalysts have also been measured. Furthermore, the stability of the Co-SAPO-5 catalyst was explored and found to be good for the selective oxidation of cyclohexane by molecular oxygen.

Abstract:The development of catalysts for the hydrodeoxygenation of bio-based feedstocks is an important step towards the production of fuels and chemicals from biomass. This paper describes in situ-generated bulk molybdenum and tungsten oxides in the hydrodeoxygenation of the lignin-derived compound guaiacol. The catalysts obtained were studied using powder X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transition electron microscopy, diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The use of metal carbonyls as precursors was shown to promote the formation of amorphous molybdenum oxide and crystalline tungsten phosphide under hydrodeoxygenation conditions. The catalysts' activity was investigated under various reaction conditions (temperature, H2 pressure, solvent). MoOx was more active in the partial and full hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol at temperatures of 200–380 °C (5 MPa H2, 6 h). However, cyclohexane, which is an undesirable product, was formed in significant amounts using MoOx (5 MPa H2, 6 h), while WOx was more selective to aromatics. When using dodecane as a solvent (380 °C, 5 MPa H2, 6 h), the benzene-toluene-xylenes fraction was obtained with a 96% yield over the WOx catalyst.

Abstract:Abstract As a commercial MTO catalyst, SAPO-34 zeolite exhibits excellent recyclability probably due to its intrinsic good hydrothermal stability. However, the structural dynamic changes of SAPO-34 catalyst induced by hydrocarbon pool (HP) species and the water formed during the MTO conversion as well as its long-term stability after continuous regenerations are rarely investigated and poorly understood. Herein, the dynamic changes of SAPO-34 framework during the MTO conversion were identified by 1D 27 Al, 31 P MAS NMR, and 2D 31 P- 27 Al HETCOR NMR spectroscopy. The breakage of T-O-T bonds in SAPO-34 catalyst during long-term continuous regenerations in the MTO conversion could be efficiently suppressed by pre-coking. The combination of catalyst pre-coking and water co-feeding is established to be an efficient strategy to promote the catalytic efficiency and long-term stability of SAPO-34 catalysts in the commercial MTO processes, also sheds light on the development of other high stable zeolite catalyst in the commercial catalysis.

Highly Efficient and Selective Hydrodeoxygenation of Guaiacol Using Ni‐Supported Honeycomb‐Structured Biochar and Phosphomolybdic Acid

Abstract:The sustainable development of energy has always been a concern. Upgrading biomass catalysis into hydrocarbon liquid fuels is one of the effective methods. In order to upgrade biomass derivative guaiacol by Hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) catalysis, this article report a three‐dimensional honeycomb structure biochar loaded with Ni nanoparticles and phosphomolybdic acid demonstrating excellent catalytic performance in a short period of time. This is due to the porous structure of biochar, which allows Ni metal nanoparticles to be highly uniformly dispersed on the support, which enhances the catalytic hydrogenation of guaiacol in terms of both rate and efficiency. Furthermore, it was observed that the added phosphomolybdic acid dissolved within the temperature range of 78‐90°C, functioning as a homogeneous catalyst in the process. This proves advantageous, as the phosphomolybdic acid becomes accessible at any location within the porous Ni/C catalyst. The detailed characterization data revealed that the carbon support prepared in this study has a high specific surface area of up to 1375.61 m2/g. Additionally, the phosphomolybdic acid exhibited rich acidity, with Brønsted and Lewis acid contents of 2.55 μmol/g and 21.45 μmol/g, respectively. Reaction data demonstrated that at 240°C for 180 minutes, 100% conversion and 97.9% cyclohexane selectivity were achieved.

Selective regulation of products for guaiacol hydrodeoxygenation by adjusting type and acidity of supports

Abstract:Upgrading lignin-oil into advanced fuels or chemicals has been widely studied in recent years. To understand the effect of support type and acidity on the hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of guaiacol (lignin-oil model compound), Ni-based catalysts were prepared with SiO2, Al2O3 and ZSM-5 as supports, respectively. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), N2 adsorption desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and Pyridine adsorption Fourier-transform infrared (Py-IR). The research results indicate that selective regulation of guaiacol hydrogenation products can be achieved by changing the type and acidity of support. Cyclohexanol is the main product over Ni/SiO2, while cyclohexane is the main product over Ni/ZSM-5 series catalysts. Moreover, as the Si/Al ratio increases, the catalytic activity of Ni/ZSM-5 slightly decreases, and the yield of cyclohexane also decreases. The Brønsted acidity of the support is the key to promoting the conversion of cyclohexanol to cyclohexane. The formation of NiAl2O4 is the main reason for the relatively low activity of Ni/Al2O3. The conversion of guaiacol is as high as 99.2 %, and the yield of cyclohexane is as high as 86.6 % over Ni/ZSM-5(Si/Al = 27). In addition, complete conversion of guaiacol and 92.6 % yield of cyclohexanol were achieved over Ni/SiO2. More importantly, Ni/SiO2 and Ni/ZSM-5(27) are suitable for aromatic substrates with different substituents, respectively.
