Abstract:High-resolution records of summer monsoonal evolution in the Holocene are essential to paleoclimate reconstruction but are hard to obtain. Here we provide a continuous, well-dated, high-resolution record from Huguangyan maar lake located in the west Pacific climate regime. Multi-proxies including chlorophyll a, TOC, Sr/Rb ratio and magnetic susceptibility have been used to reconstruct the monsoon variations in the Holocene. Higher chlorophyll a values are related with stronger summer monsoon, and vice versa. High-temporal resolution radiocarbon dating enables us to divide summer monsoon evolution stages. Summer monsoon in Zhanjiang area was strongest in the early Holocene but began to decline at 6080yr BP, and weakened substantially since about 3600yr BP. The transition around 6080yr BP, supported by our high-resolution dating, lags the previous estimates by ~1700years. The decreasing summer solar radiation at 30°N through the Holocene is probably responsible for gradually weakened summer monsoon. The anti-phased co-variation of summer monsoon intensity and ENSO activity throughout the Holocene suggests that they could be interlinked, driven together by solar radiation at orbital scale.

Abstract:In order to examine high-frequency variations of East Asian winter monsoon in Quaternary climatic extremes, two typical loess–paleosol sequences in the Chinese Loess Plateau were investigated. Sandy layers in the loess deposits, the “Upper sand” and “Lower sand” (layers L9 and L15, respectively), which represent a high-resolution record of paleomonsoon changes, have been sampled at intervals of 5–6 cm from sections at Luochuan and Xifeng. The grain size and magnetic susceptibility was measured for all samples. The grain-size results (a proxy of winter monsoon strength) indicate that the winter monsoon strength fluctuated on a millennial timescale during cold climatic extremes, with climatic events of a few hundred to a few thousand years. However, the winter monsoon was relatively stable during warm periods. The magnetic susceptibility signal (a proxy of summer monsoon intensity) is practically constant over the same period. This is tentatively explained by the assumption that the summer monsoon intensity was too low to be recorded in the magnetic susceptibility signal. The intensified winter monsoon events show periodicities in a range of 1000 to 2770 yr, with a dominant cycle of approximately 1450 yr. The detection of this oscillation in older glacial stages strongly suggests that it may be a pervasive cycle of the cold climatic phases of the Quaternary. Millennial-scale variations of the winter monsoon may be caused by instability of the westerly jet, which is determined by temperature differences between the polar and the equatorial regions.
High‐Resolution Records of Millennial‐Scale East Asian Winter Monsoon in the Shelf Sea of Eastern China

Abstract:The evolution of the East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) during the Holocene remains controversial because of the lack of reliable proxies. In this study, a link between cross‐front transport and the EAWM was found in the North Yellow Sea, and the EAWM intensity could be imprinted in the leaked sediment, which permits reliable reconstruction of the EAWM on well‐preserved offshore deposition. By comparison with instrumental data, the wind speed of the EAWM since 4.4 ka was quantitatively reconstructed for the first time at high resolution (∼5 yr). The results show that the EAWM gradually weakened in the mid‐to‐late Holocene, which was likely controlled by solar insolation, and that there has been a negative relationship between the EAWM and temperature on the centennial scale since ∼2.0 ka; this relationship was reversed by increasing CO2 emissions during the Current Warm Period.

Abstract:Paleoclimatic research can provide critical insight on causes of change in the East Asian monsoon, which influences the lives of 1.6 billion people today. In this study, we use paleo-climatic indexes from Chinese loess deposits, which have clear climatic implications and are independently dated, to reconstruct the monsoon precipitation since 21 ka. Our results show that monsoon precipitation persistently decreased from 21 ka to ca. 8 ka, and increased after ca. 8 ka, with a precipitation peak at 8-3 ka. These changes in East Asian summer monsoon precipitation are synchronous with changes in high-northern-latitude ice volume/ice cover and atmospheric CO2. These new data suggest that variation of the monsoon precipitation was probably driven by CO2-forced high-northern-latitude temperature changes, shifting the location of the intertropical convergence zone that dominates monsoon precipitation. Our TraCE-21000 modeling experiment supports this interpretation.

Abstract:Independent inference of the Asian winter monsoon (AWM), albeit achieved at several sparse sites, has reached no consensus for its variability through the Holocene. A sediment core from the northern coast of the South China Sea (SCS) was utilized to analyze organic biomarkers at (bi‐)decadal resolution, unveiling how SCS oceanic conditions fingerprint the AWM signal. Generally, alkenone sea surface temperature (SST) record, resembling the temporal structures of integrated tropical SST over the past 7,500 years, shows abnormal cool temperatures (up to ~4 °C) during the Little Ice Age and between ~1,200 and 2,500 years BP, when windborne terrigenous hopane compounds experienced considerable increases superimposed on a general increasing trend. Our results, together with augmented SST gradient between the SCS coast and open ocean, consistently suggest AWM strengthening toward the late Holocene. An intensified AWM during cold intervals like the Little Ice Age would have provided strong positive feedback to enhance coastal cooling.
A 5000-Year Sedimentary Record of East Asian Winter Monsoon from the Northern Muddy Area of the East China Sea

Abstract:The variability of the winter monsoon is one of the key components of the Asian monsoon, significantly influencing paleoenvironmental evolution in East Asia. However, whether the winter or the summer monsoon is the dominated factor controlling sedimentary dynamics of the muddy areas of the continental shelves of the East China Sea is debated, due to lack of consistency between various winter monsoon proxies in previous studies. In this work, the sediments of the upper part of core ECS-DZ1 with several marine surface samples were studied in terms of sediment grain size and radiocarbon dating, and changes in sedimentary dynamics of the northern muddy area of the ECS over the past 5000 years were documented. The main findings are as follows: (1) regional sedimentary dynamics were low and did not significantly change since the middle Holocene; (2) coarse particles are the dominated component in the sediments; (3) a proxy can be derived to indicate changes in winter monsoon. Based on this reconstructed winter monsoon record, we found that this record was generally negatively correlated to the stalagmite-based summer monsoon variability over the past 3500 years, but positively correlated before that. Moreover, this record can be well correlated to changes in the Kuroshio Current and the Bond ice-rafting debris events in the North Atlantic on millennial timescales, inferring large-scale and common atmospheric dynamics across the Asian continent over the past 5000 years. Therefore, we concluded that the winter monsoon is the predominant factor controlling sedimentary dynamics in the northern part of the ECS and proposed that the contribution of coarse particles may be one of potential indices to identify the role of the winter and the summer monsoons in sedimentary evolution.

Abstract:The B2 (B2G) and I4 sediment cores recovered from the centre of the distal mud area of the East China Sea (ECS) were analysed for grain size distribution. Proxies for environmentally sensitive grain size components (ESGSC) retrieved from the composite B2 core, namely, variations in the volumetric content and mean grain size of specific grain size fractions, reveal a detailed history of the East Asia Winter Monsoon (EAWM) including centennial to decadal-scale variations spanning the last 2300 calendar years before present (cal. yr BP). The results indicate that EAWM variations are consistent with temperature changes in eastern China (as inferred from historical documents). Additionally, the sea surface temperature (SST) in the Southern Okinawa Trough, the delta O-18 of stalagmite from the Sanbao cave and the drift ice indices from the North Atlantic, along with strong or weak EAWMs, corresponding to low or high temperatures, respectively. Four periods of EAWM variations were identified, namely, a weak EAWM stage from 2300 to 2050 cal. yr BP; a comparatively enhanced EAWM between 2050 and 1700 cal. yr BP; a return to a weak EAWM from 1700 to 700 cal. yr BP, including the Roman Warm Period (RWP), the Sui-Tang Dynasty Warm Period (STWP) and the 'Medieval Warm Period' (MWP) and a strongly developed EAWM between 700 and 100 cal. yr BP, corresponding to a 'Little Ice Age'. An important abrupt warm to cold climate change event occurred around 678 cal. yr BP. During this period, the climate change was likely related to global scale changes in atmospheric circulation. Spectral analyses of the ESGSC proxies show high-frequency cycles and a close solar-monsoon connection to the EAWM, suggesting that one of the primary controls for centennial to decadal-scale change in EAWM intensity was the variation in solar radiation during that time.

Abstract:The evolution of East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) in tropical oceans has been a key issue in the climatic coupling between high- and low-latitudes. This study aims to investigate the EAWM variability using multiproxy of sediment core XB19S40 in the southeast offshore of Hainan Island, South China Sea. Alkenone derived sea surface temperature (SST), sediment grain size, and elemental ratios show consistent changes over the last 20.7 ka. There were synchronous abrupt changes in the SST, Zr/Rb, K/Ti, and End-members (EMs) during the Bølling-Allerød warming period, Younger Dryas and 8.2 ka cooling events. The Zr/Rb and EM2 (18.7-84.6 μm, 40.1 μm) changes reflect the EAWM and are highly coincident with records in high latitudes. These changes suggest that the EAWM gradually weakened from the last glacial maximum to early Holocene, experienced minor strengthening in the late Holocene but has diminished since 1 ka. In contrast, the indicators K/Ti and EM1 (0.2-18.7 μm, 9.9 μm) suggest that the East Asian summer monsoon is in the opposite phase. Spectral analysis demonstrates that the intensity of East Asian monsoons in the SCS were mainly affected by solar activity on a centennial-scale. The results of this study provide new insight into the complexity of the EAWM system and emphasize the importance of understanding multiple components of the climate system.

Abstract:Grain size and magnetic susceptibility measurements on samples from a typical loess–palaeosol sequence on the central Chinese Loess Plateau are used to reconstruct the Pleistocene East Asian monsoon climate. The coarse-grained fraction, i.e. the weight percentage > 30 μm of the bulk grain-size distribution, is used as a sensitive proxy index of the East Asia winter monsoon strength. On the basis of an absolute time-scale, time-series variations of this proxy show that winter monsoon strengths varied on millennial time-scales during the periods 145–165, 240–280, 320–350, 390–440, 600–640, 860–890, 900–930 and 1330–1400 kyr BP. The wavelength of these climatic oscillations varied between 1.89 and 4.0 kyr, as is shown by spectral analysis using the multitaper method. Although numerical simulation experiments show that high frequencies also can arise from measurement errors in the grain-size analysis, the frequencies prove to be sufficiently stable when the spectral analysis is repeated with a different number of tapers. For the time being, we do not correlate these climatic oscillations with palaeoclimatic records in the North Atlantic deep-sea sediments because both time-scales need to be further improved. Our data, however, certainly demonstrate that millennial-scale East Asian winter monsoon variations in the last 1.4 million years can be detected from terrestrial loess records. Late-Holocene Variation in Vertical Thermal Gradient from the Coastal East China Sea: Links to Monsoon Climate and Coastal Upwelling

Abstract:The evolution history of coastal upwelling systems in the East China Sea over the late-Holocene are important yet difficult to be characterized. Here, we present ~3000-year temperature records based on both alkenones (UK’37) and glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (TEXH86) from a sedimentary core in the coastal upwelling site of the southern East China Sea. By examining the similarity and difference between the down-core TEXH86-derived temperature and records of sea surface temperature, summer monsoon, and winter monsoon, we suggest that the TEXH86 mainly reflects temperature in the subsurface water in the studied site. In this sense, paired temperature records from both surface (UK’37) and subsurface (TEXH86) water would yield an estimation on the vertical thermal gradient, which provides insight into the upwelling strength in the summer season. Weak upwelling periods occurred at 2600–2800 yr BP, 2000–2400 yr BP, 1200–1550 yr BP, 350–750 yr BP, and the recent ~100 years. Positive correlations among the coastal upwelling, the Asian summer monsoon, and the solar irradiance in centennial scales at ~100–3000 yr BP indicate that solar-induced summer monsoonal wind might be responsible for the coastal upwelling in the studied area. However, weak upwelling intensity and weak monsoonal strength under the background of relatively warm global temperature and strong solar irradiance since the end of the ‘Little Ice Age’ (LIA) might suggest a different climatic response to the natural irradiance, asking for further work on the underlying mechanisms of this phenomenon in a widespread area.
Asynchronous Variations of East Asian Summer Monsoon, Vegetation and Soil Formation at Yulin (north China) in the Holocene

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn the East Asian monsoon region, Chinese speleothem δ18O records exhibit a maximum monsoon strength during the early Holocene. However, other proxy data from lakes or loess, interpreted as monsoon rainfall, show a mid‐Holocene monsoon optimum. This discrepancy may come from specific climate interpretation of different proxies. Here we report multiproxy records from a single loess–palaeosol sequence at Yulin in the monsoon marginal northern China, based on an independent and high‐precision chronology. Our long‐chain n‐alkane δD values, together with related biomarker proxies including the average chain length and concentration of long‐chain n‐alkanes, reveal a weakening trend in monsoon strength and less woody vegetation since ~6 ka. However, other soil formation‐related proxies, such as magnetic susceptibility, grain‐size distribution and total organic carbon, show a decreasing trend since 4–3 ka. We find that monsoon and vegetation are controlled by insolation variation, while soil formation is more related to temperature and humidity changes. Our multiple proxy comparison reveals different controlling mechanisms leading to different interpretations in monsoon, vegetation and soil formation reconstructions. This finding suggests that previous debates on Holocene monsoon changes in East Asia probably stem from the specific proxy interpretation.

Abstract:Abstract The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most dynamic components of the global climate system. Although poorly understood, knowledge of long-term spatial differences in EAWM variability during the glacial–interglacial cycles is important for understanding the dynamic processes of the EAWM. We reconstructed the spatiotemporal characteristics of the EAWM since the last glacial maximum (LGM) using a comparison of proxy records and long-term transient simulations. A loess grain-size record from northern China (a sensitive EAWM proxy) and the sea surface temperature gradient of an EAWM index in sediments of the southern South China Sea were compared. The data–model comparison indicates pronounced spatial differences in EAWM evolution, with a weakened EAWM since the LGM in northern China but a strengthened EAWM from the LGM to the early Holocene, followed by a weakening trend, in southern China. The model results suggest that variations in the EAWM in northern China were driven mainly by changes in atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) concentration and Northern Hemisphere ice sheets, whereas orbital insolation and ice sheets were important drivers in southern China. We propose that the relative importance of insolation, ice sheets, and atmospheric CO 2 for EAWM evolution varied spatially within East Asia.

Abstract:Coastal regions of the northern South China Sea (SCS) strongly interact with the Asian monsoon circulation (AMC). Thus, variations of sea surface temperature (SST) here are newly suggested to document AMC changes in an effective manner, but additional physical parameters of oceanic conditions, probably also in relation to the AMC system, remain poorly understood. In this study, we analyzed glycerol dialkyl glycerol tetraethers (GDGTs) from a well-dated sediment core YJ, retrieved at the northern SCS coast, to further scrutinize the intrinsic response of water column to winter AMC strength. It shows that within the time frame of past ∼1,000 years, the tetraether index of lipids with 86 carbon atoms ( TEX 86 ) and published alkenone ( U 37 K ′ ) temperature records together confirm a reduced thermal gradient during the Little Ice Age (LIA), in comparison to that during the Medieval Climate Anomaly (MCA). Considering concurrent variations of the branched and isoprenoid tetraether (BIT) and the ratio of archaeol to caldarchaeol (ACE), for example, with decreased values (<∼0.3) for the former and relatively high values for the latter at the LIA, indicative of stratification and salinity changes, respectively, these multiple lines of evidence thereby call for well mixing of onsite water at site YJ correspondingly. Our results suggest that winter AMC strength is a critical factor for mixing subsurface waters and modifying thermal/saline conditions at the northern SCS coasts through the last millennium and also, perhaps, on longer timescales.

Abstract:The East Asian Monsoon (EAM) is a regional factor affecting the East Asian climate and the oceanographic processes of the marginal seas along the Western Pacific. Finding proxies for the EAM intensity and reconstructing the interannual and interdecadal variations of the EAM using high-resolution records are necessary to improve our understanding of the EAM’s role in the global climate system and for predicting climate change. In this paper, high-resolution sedimentary records of sedimentary core C0702 obtained from the inner continental shelf of the East China Sea were comprehensively analyzed using a laser particle size analyzer, an Itrax TM core scanner, and a 210 Pb and 137 Cs radionuclide analyzer to explore potential proxies for the East Asian Winter Monsoon (EAWM). By combining the obtained results with instrumental observations of the EAM, we established a quantitative formula for the EAWM, which enables to reconstruct the evolution trend of the EAWM during the past 130 years. The sensitive grain-size component F2, with a grain-size range of 14.35–230 μm, and principal component PC1 of the sedimentary deposits of the East China Sea inner shelf can be used as EAWM proxies. The evolution of EAWM in 1880–1950 could be roughly divided into two stages: a weak EAWM period from 1882 to 1900 and a strong EAWM period from 1900 to 1945. This study improves our understanding of the variations in the EAWM on interannual and interdecadal temporal scales.
Patterns and Frequencies of the East Asian Winter Monsoon Variations During the Past Million Years Revealed by Wavelet and Spectral Analyses

Abstract:The wavelet and spectral analyses are used to investigate the variations of patterns and frequencies of the East Asian winter monsoon system during the past million years. Grain size of the loess–paleosol deposit at the central Chinese Loess Plateau is employed as a proxy indicator of the winter monsoon strength. On the bases of palaeomagnetic dates and a sedimentation rate model, an absolute, not orbitally tuned time scale for the loess deposit is developed. Wavelet analyses on this time series show that the patterns and frequencies of the East Asian winter monsoon climate vary with time during the past million years. The wavelet analyses also revealed a shift of climatic pattern from predominantly quasi-200- to quasi-100-ka cycle at around 500 ka BP which is also supported by previous studies using the sedimentation rate analysis as well as paleosol observations. Traditional spectral analysis on the same time series shows that the East Asian winter monsoon changes at Milankovich cycles, but there are also cycles which may not be related to orbital forcing. The predominant 41-ka cycle identified from previous studies is not evident in this time series from both wavelet and spectral analyses. Our results present new evidence that not only solar radiation, but also other boundary conditions, may have forced the monsoon system changes at the 104–105 years time scale.

Abstract:Lake Sihailongwan in Jilin province, NE China, provides the first continuous and almost entirely seasonally laminated sediment record on the East Asian mainland comprising the complete Holocene, the Late-glacial period, and large parts of the Last Glacial. Sediment and palynological proxy data provide a finely resolved regional environmental history of the East Asian monsoon. A varve-based chronology (shl-vc2) has been established for the last 65,000 years and allows a detailed comparison with other long regional and global palaeoclimate records. Vegetation density of the study area depends, on the long run, on precessionally forced insolation changes, with superimposed millennial-scale variability during the Last Glacial. Periodic increase of organic carbon content and thermophilous tree species like Ulmus and Fraxinus and contemporary decrease of shrub Alnus precisely mirror millennial-scale climatic variations primarily known from Greenland ice-cores as Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles, as well as Late-glacial period climate changes. Percentages of trees & shrubs pollen and in particular lake productivity-related data reveal substantial differences between interstadial intensities, with those between 50 and 60 ka BP being more pronounced than the following ones.

Abstract:Environmentally sensitive grain-size component (ESGSC) extracted from grain-size data of a sediment core B2, which were retrieved from mud area southwest off Cheju Island (MACI), East China Sea (ECS), can be used to indicate the variations of East Asia Winter Monsoon (EAWM), with high (low) content/mean-size of ESGCS denote to strong (weak) EAWM. Combined with AMS 14 C datings core B2 provides a continuous high-resolution record of EAWM changes over the past 2300 years, with an average resolution of 13 years. The results show that the variations of EAWM are consistent with temperature changes inferred from historical documents in eastern China over the past 2300 years, from which four climate stages may be identified. In stages before 1900 aBP (50 AD) and 1450–780 aBP (50–1170 AD) the EAWM were comparatively weak, corresponding to warm climate periods in eastern China, respectively. And in stages of 1900–1450 aBP (50–500 AD) and 780–219 aBP (1170–1731 AD) the EAWM were strongly developed, which correspond well to climate changes of two cold periods in eastern China. It is also shown from this study that the stage at 780–219 aBP (1170–1731 AD) was the coldest climate period during the last 2300 years and could be, therefore, related to the Little Ice Age (LIA). Climatic fluctuations appeared obviously in all the four stages, and two climate events of abrupt changes from warm to cold occurred at around 1900 aBP (50 AD) and 780 aBP (1170 AD), of which the latter is probably related to globe-scale changes of atmospheric circulation at that time.

Abstract:The East Asian winter monsoon (EAWM) is one of the most active components of the global climate system. Climate anomalies associated with the EAWM differ between extratropical and tropical regions due to the EAWM's meridional extent. Spatial differences in the EAWM variability on centennial and millennial time scales during the Holocene have not been well understood. This study describes Holocene spatiotemporal features of the EAWM based on comparisons of proxy records and climate simulations. The analysis specifically compared four proxy records located throughout China to assess the EAWM's spatial variability during the Holocene. These records indicate a stronger EAWM during the early Holocene than that during the late Holocene. The EAWM also shows a rapid, asynchronous decline from northwestern to southeastern China. The EAWM declined in northwestern China from 10 to 7.5ka B.P., whereas the decline did not occur in southern China and the eastern Tibetan Plateau until 6-4.5ka B.P. Coupled equilibrium and transient simulations of climate evolution during the Holocene indicate that the decline of the EAWM from 10 to 7.5ka B.P. was probably caused by melting of Northern Hemisphere (NH) ice sheets and enhanced Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). The decline of the EAWM from 6 to 4.5ka B.P. over the eastern Tibetan Plateau and southern China is related to an abrupt increase in sea surface temperatures (SSTs) of the tropical western Indian Ocean. We therefore argue that the regional shift in EAWM intensity was probably related to a distinguishing response to high-latitude (NH ice sheets and AMOC) and low-latitude (tropical SSTs) forcings.

Abstract:The relationship between the Asian monsoon and westerly winds (WWs) on various temporal scales remains a topic of debate. The Zoige wetland, situated to the east of the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau, is the largest highland wetland in China and highly sensitive to environmental changes. While several paleoenvironmental reconstructions have been conducted in this region, comprehensive investigations into grain size are still limited. In this study, we conducted a systematic investigation of grain size in ash from the sediments of the Hongyuan peat HY2014 profile in this area. The ash composition in this profile was primarily clay and silt particles, with a very low sand content. The grain size frequency curves generally exhibited a bimodal modality, except for the sediments in the bottom layers which displayed a single-peak pattern. By employing the end-member (EM) model and considering previous research findings, we reconstructed the atmospheric circulation since the last deglaciation. Three distinct EMs were identified. EM1 indicated long-distance suspended materials primarily transported by WWs. EM2 was associated with low-altitude circulation and linked to a decrease in the Asian summer monsoon (ASM). EM3 represented materials transported into the wetland via the Asian winter monsoon (AWM). Our results suggested that during the late deglacial period, characterized by strong AWM intensity, the Zoige wetland experienced cold and arid conditions. Moreover, the WWs and ASM exerted dominant influences, while the AWM gradually weakened during the Holocene, with variations in their intensities across different time intervals. The results also revealed a positive correlation between WWs and ASM, as well as a negative correlation between WWs and AWM.

Abstract:The glacial-interglacial variability of precipitation and its driving mechanism in monsoonal regions has long been a subject of debate. However, there are few records of quantitative climate reconstruction dating to the last glacial cycle in areas dominated by the Asian summer monsoon. Here, using a pollen-based quantitative climate reconstruction based on three sites in areas exposed to the Asian summer monsoon, we demonstrate that climate has undergone great variability over the past 68 ka. The differences between the last glacial and the Holocene optimum could have been as much as 35%-51% for precipitation, and 5-7 °C for mean annual temperature. Our findings also reveal regional heterogeneity during the abrupt climate events of Heinrich Event 1 and Younger Dryas, that drove drier conditions in southwestern China dominated by the Indian summer monsoon, and a wetter climate in central eastern China. The pattern of variation in reconstructed precipitation, exhibiting strong glacial-interglacial variability, is broadly consistent with the stalagmite δ<sup>18</sup>O records from Southwest China and South Asia. Our results of reconstruction quantify the sensitivity of the MIS3 precipitation to orbital insolation changes, and highlight the prominent influence of interhemispheric temperature gradients on Asian monsoon variability. Comparison with transient simulations and major climate forcings has shown that the mode of precipitation variability during the transition from the last glacial maximum to the Holocene has been significantly modulated by weak or collapsed Atlantic meridional overturning circulation events in addition to insolation forcing.
