Abstract:The hydrogen storage properties of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 reactive hydride composites for reversible hydrogen storage were investigated by comparing with the 2LiBH(4) + MgH2 composite in the present work. The dehydrogenation pathway and reaction mechanism of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite were also investigated and elucidated. The self-decomposition of Mg2FeH6 leads to the in situ formation of Mg and Fe particles on the surface of LiBH4, resulting in a well dispersion between different reacting phases. The formation of FeB is observed during the dehydrogenation of 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite, which might supplies nucleation sites of MgB2 during the dehydrogenation process, but is not an ascendant catalyst for the self-decomposition of LiBH4. And FeB can also transform to the LiBH4 and Fe by reacting with LiH and H-2 during the rehydrogenation process. The dehydrogenation capacity for 5LiBH(4) + Mg2FeH6 composite still gets to 6.5 wt% even after four cycles. The X-ray diffraction analyses reveal the phase transitions during the hydriding and dehydriding cycle. The formed FeB in the composite maintains a nano-structure after four hydriding-dehydriding cycles. The loss of hydrogen storage capacity and de-/rehydrogenation kinetics can be attributed to the incomplete generation of Mg2FeH6 during the rehydrogenation process. Synergistic Effect of LiBH4and LiAlH4Additives on Improved Hydrogen Storage Properties of Unexpected High Capacity Magnesium Hydride

Abstract:A significant improvement in reversible de/rehydrogenation properties of MgH2 doped with 2.5 wt % LiAlH4 and 2.5 wt % LiBH4 additives is achieved by reactive ball milling. Careful comparison studies show that a small amount (total mass ratio of <= 5 wt %) of LiBH4 and/or LiAlH4 can improve the hydrogen desorption performance of MgH2 in terms of reducing hydrogen desorption temperature, enhancing hydrogen desorption kinetics, and increasing hydrogen capacity. In particular, the MgH2 co-doped with LiAlH4-LiBH4 exhibits the best dehydrogenation properties, which starts to release hydrogen at about 280 degrees C and releases a high hydrogen capacity of 7.62 wt % with superior reaction kinetics. The activation energy of hydrogen desorption is decreased from 187.8 kJ/mol (ball-milled MgH2) to 155.8 kJ/mol. It can also uptake 7.7 wt % H-2 within 15 min at 300 degrees C with a stable hydrogen absorption kinetics in the first 10 cycles. This synergistic effect of LiBH4 and LiAlH4 additives on improved hydrogen absorption/desorption properties is attributed to the in situ formation of Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12, and MgAlB4 new phases acting as the "catalytic active sites" to facilitate the diffusion of hydrogen through the reaction barriers in the de/hydrogenation cycles of MgH2. Moreover, these new phases can be rehydrogenated into MgH2, LiBH4, and Li3AlH6 hydrides, which further enhance the hydrogen capacity of co-doped sample more than the theoretical capacity of primitive MgH2.
Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties and Mechanism of LiBH4–MgH2–Al Doped with NbF5Additive

Abstract:LiBH4 is one of the most potential candidates for hydrogen storage materials among several sorts of complex borohydrides. Utilizing reactive hydride composites on LiBH4 could destabilize the thermodynamics and improve dehydrogenation behaviors, such as the excellent reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2 and the fast dehydrogenation of LiBH4-Al. The strategy of combining both outstanding effects of MgH2 and AI to form LiBH4-MgH2-Al system has been proposed. However, reduction of hydrogen capacity during cycles has not been solved for the LiBH4-MgH2-Al system, which is considered as the principal problem. In this work, we investigated the reversible hydrogen storage performance and reaction mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al doped with/without NbF5 additive. It can be found that the dehydrogenation of 4LiBH(4)-MgH2-Al can release about 9.0 wt % H-2 quickly without incubation period, compared with 2LiBH(4)-MgH2. Moreover, it is the first time to achieve completely reversible hydrogen desorption property of LiBH4-MgH2-Al by doping with NbF5 and dehydrogenating under hydrogen back pressure in experiment. Microstructure analysis shows that the formation of Mg-Al alloys could result in the formation of Li2B12H12 and subsequently lead to the capacity degradation. With the additive NbF5, it shows a totally different pathway and a significant inhibition effect on the alloying between Mg and Al, leading to an improved de/rehydrogenation behavior without the byproduct Li2B12H12. Meanwhile, NbF5 could be hydrogenated into NbH2 and react with element B to form NbB2, promoting the reaction between Mg/Al metals and B element to form MgAlB4. On the other hand, those niobium compounds could facilitate the products MgAlB4 and LiH to be fully rehydrogenated into LiBH4, MgH2, and Al, which contributes to the complete reversibility of LiBH4-MgH2-Al. A better understanding of the capacity fade mechanism of LiBH4-MgH2-Al system and the effects of additives might promote further development of high-capacity hydrogen storage materials.

Abstract:2LiBH4-MgH2 is a typical reactive hydride composite with a capacity of 11.5 wt % that has attracted intensive attention. Its practical application, however, is hindered by sluggish kinetics, poor reversibility, and different reaction pathways under various temperatures and hydrogen back pressures. Herein, bimetallic (NiCo) sheet-like nanoporous carbon (NiCo@NC) is designed to improve the hydrogen storage performance of 2LiBH4-MgH2 composite. During the initial H2 desorption process of 2LiBH4-MgH2 under 4 atm H2 pressure, NiCo NPs in NiCo@NC would be in situ transformed into MgNi3B2, acting as the heterogeneous nucleation sites for MgB2, and CoB, serving as the effective catalyst for H2 desorption of 2LiBH4-MgH2 composite. Due to the synergistic effect of in situ formed CoB and MgNi3B2, the incubation period for 2LiBH4-MgH2 is reduced to 1.5 h in the initial H2 desorption process and almost vanished in the following H2 desorption and adsorption cycles, while the incubation time for bulk 2LiBH4-MgH2 composite reaches 16 h. More importantly, induced by the catalysis of NiCo@NC, 2LiBH4-MgH2 exhibits improved cycling stability with a reversible capacity of 8.4 wt % after 10 cycles of hydrogen storage process, corresponding to 95.5% of H2 desorption capacity of the second cycle. This work provides a potential strategy for the design of dual-functional catalysts to improve reversible hydrogen storage performance of reactive hydride composites.

Abstract:Novel porous hollow carbon nanospheres (HCNS) have been synthesized and utilized as scaffold for LiBH4-Mg(BH4)(2) eutectic borohydride (LMBH). Large loading amounts of LMBH (33, 50 and 67 wt%) have been melt-infiltrated into HCNS, and the significantly improved dehydrogenation properties have been discovered. The LMBH@HCNS composites not only exhibit high actual dehydrogenation amounts and fast hydrogen desorption rates, but also an increased reversible hydrogen storage capacities after three cycles without obvious degradation. Further structural tests have revealed that the over-infiltrated LMBH covering the spherical surface of HCNS could also contribute to the improved hydrogen storage behaviors, due to a strong interfacial adhesion effect that avoid LMBH from aggregation during de/rehydrogenation cycles. Abstract:Hydrogen has become a promising energy source due to its efficient and renewable properties. Although promising, hydrogen energy has not been in widespread use due to the lack of high-performance materials for hydrogen storage. Previous studies have shown that the addition of Al-based compounds to LiBH4 can create composites that have good properties for hydrogen storage. In this work, the dehydrogenation performances of different composite systems of 2LiBH4+ M (M = Al, LiAlH4, Li3AlH6) were investigated. The results show that, under a ball to powder ratio of 25:1 and a rotation speed of 300 rpm, the optimum ball milling time is 50 h for synthesizing Li3AlH6 from LiH and LiAlH4. The three studied systems destabilized LiBH4 at relatively low temperatures, and the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite demonstrated excellent behavior. Based on the differential scanning calorimetry results, pure LiBH4 released hydrogen at 469°C. The dehydrogenation temperature of LiBH4 is 416°C for 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 versus 435°C for 2LiBH4-LiAlH4 and 445°C for 2LiBH4-Al. The 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6, 2LiBH4-LiAlH4, and 2LiBH4-Al samples released 9.1, 8, and 5.7 wt.% of H2, respectively. Additionally, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite released the 9.1 wt.% H2 within 150 min. An increase in the kinetics was achieved. From the results, it was concluded that 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 exhibits the best dehydrogenation performance. Therefore, the 2LiBH4-Li3AlH6 composite is considered a promising hydrogen storage material.

Abstract:LiBH4 + 1/2MgH(2) is a promising reactive hydride composite for hydrogen storage. In the present study, three Ce-based additives were used as catalysts to enhance the hydrogen storage performance of LiBH4 + 1/2MgH(2) composites. The composites with Ce additives demonstrated significantly improved dehydrogenation kinetics and cyclic stability compared with the pure composite. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses clearly revealed the phase transitions and morphological evolution during the hydriding-dehydriding cycling. The composites with Ce-based additives displayed stable nanostructures, in contrast to the rapid microstructural deterioration in the uncatalyzed composite. The CeB6 formed in the composites had a particle size of 10 nm after five cycles. It may act as the nucleus for MgB2 formation during dehydrogenation and thus account for the structural and performance stability of the composites upon cycling. Hybrid of Bulk NbC and Layered Nb4C3 MXene for Tailoring Hydrogen Storage Kinetics and Reversibility of Li-Mg-B-H Composite: an Experimental and Theoretical Study

Abstract:The Li -Mg -B -H composite (2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 ) is acknowledged as a promising material for hydrogen storage due to its large hydrogen capacity (11.4 wt.%). However, the sluggish kinetics and poor reversibility make it difficult to be practically used. In this work, the hydrogen storage performances of 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 have been significantly improved by a hybrid of bulk NbC and layered Nb 4 C 3 MXene (denoted as "Nb- C"). The 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 + 6 wt.% Nb-C can release 8.5 wt.% H 2 within 30 min at 400 degrees C and the dehydrogenated composite can absorb 9.3 wt.% H 2 within 30 min at 350 degrees C and 7.5 MPa H 2 . The reversible dehydrogenation capacity maintains at 8.4 wt.% after 24 cycles, with a capacity retention ratio of 95.4 %. By contrast, the undoped 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 suffers from serious capacity degradation, with the capacity decreased dramatically to 3.5 wt.% after 3 cycles. Microstructural studies revealed that the doped composite has uniform particle and elemental distributions and possesses various multiphase interfaces of LiH/MgB 2 /NbC/Nb 4 C 3 , which is beneficial to hydrogen diffusion during the hydrogen uptake and release process. Theoretical studies by first principle calculation presented an extended bond length of the Mg-H and B-H bonds in the 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 + NbC system, which may also explain the improved hydrogen storage properties of 2LiBH 4 + MgH 2 by addition of Nb-C. This work provides new insights into the role of transition metal carbides in regulating the Li-Mg-B-H hydrogen storage materials both experimentally and theoretically. Highly-dispersed Nano-Tib2 Derived from the Two-Dimensional Ti3CN MXene for Tailoring the Kinetics and Reversibility of the Li-Mg-B-H Hydrogen Storage Material

Abstract:Li-Mg-B-H composite (2LiBH4 + MgH2) possesses a very high hydrogen storage capacity of 11.4 wt%. However, it still suffers from high operating temperature, slow kinetics, and poor reversibility. In this work, the two-dimensional Ti3CN MXene was first synthesized and then introduced into the Li-Mg-B-H composite. The addition of 5 wt% Ti3CN reduces the onset dehydrogenation temperature of the 2LiBH4 + MgH2 composite by about 50 degrees C and shortens the induction period of the LiBH4 decomposition at 400 degrees C from >90 min to <10 min. The reversible capacity maintains at 8.3 wt% after 20 cycles, with a capacity retention ratio of 93%. Micro-structure studies show that Ti3CN will partially transform to a highly-dispersed nano-TiB2 with particle size around 5 nm. Such nano-TiB2 could serve as an active catalyst to significantly improve the kinetics and reversibility of the Li-Mg-B-H composite. This work offers a strategy to enhancing the hydrogen storage per-formance of the advanced metal borohydride-based composites by addition of the MXene material and provides some new insights in understanding the role of MXene in tailoring the hydrogen storage properties of the Li-Mg-B-H composite.
Reversible Hydrogen Storage Composite Based on 6libh4 + CaF2

Abstract:In this work, we report a new reversible hydrogen storage composite based on 6LiBH(4)+CaF2. It has a theoretical hydrogen capacity of 9.6 wt % (0.09 g.ml(-1)) and a slightly reduced thermodynamic stability compared with pure LiBH4. The dehydrogenation of 6LiBH(4) + CaF2 yielded CaB6 and a solid solution of LiH and LiF that can be rehydrogenated to form LiBH4 and CaF2. The composite revealed good reversibility of hydrogen storage regardless of the hydrogen back pressure applied during the dehydrogenation. Catalysts like TiF3, CeF3, and NbCl5 were found to enhance its dehydriding kinetics. XRD and FT-IR analyses revealed that hydrogen uptake of the composite proceeded through a reaction path involving CaH2 as the main intermediate.

Abstract:To improve the dehydrogenation properties of LiBH4, a novel hydrogen storage system, LiBH4-Li3AlH6, was synthesized by mechanical ball milling. The dehydrogenation/rehydrogenation properties of LiBH4-Li3AlH6 (molar rato: 1: 1) composites were studied via thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), mass spectral analysis (MS), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The experimental results show that the hydrogen desorption capacity reaches 8.5 wt% and that the whole dehydrogenation is a three-step process: (1) a decomposition reaction Li3AlH6 -> 3LiH + Al + 3/2H(2), occurring at 160 degrees C; (2) formation of an intermediate product from 300 degrees C to 350 degrees C, and then subsequent transformation into Al, AlB2, and H-2. (2LiBH(4) + Al -> [Li2B2AlH4] -> x(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)) + (1-x) [Li2B2AlH4], (0 < x < 1)); and (3) final dehydrogenation of LiH + Al -> LiAl + 1/2H(2), occurring at 415 degrees C, with sequential decomposition of the remaining intermediate ((1-x)[Li2B2AlH4]->(1-x)(AlB2 + 2LiH + 3H(2)), (0 < x < 1)). Enhanced reversible hydrogen desorption properties and mechanism of Mg(BH 4 ) 2 -AlH 3 -LiH composite

Abstract:The Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH (x = 0, 0.5, 1) novel ternary composites have been synthesized through mechanical ball milling, their favorable dehydrogenation properties and mechanism have been experimentally investigated. It can be found that during ball milling, a slight amount of Mg(BH4)2 would react with LiH and transform into LiBH4, while most Mg(BH4)2 remained stable after ball milling. Two major dehydrogenation steps can be detected in the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite, which belong to the decomposition of AlH3 and Mg(BH4)2, respectively. Remarkably, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature of Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-xLiH composite can be reduced to 125.9 °C, with a total hydrogen desorption capacity of 10.3 wt%. It is worth emphasizing that the reversible dehydrogenation capacity is obviously improved to 3.8 wt%, compared to the Mg(BH4)2-AlH3 composite. This reversible capacity can be held for 3 cycles without obvious degeneration. Microstructural analysis on de/rehydrogenated composite has identified the regeneration of [BH4]- in Mg(BH4)2-AlH3-0.5LiH composite and revealed the role of LiH in the cycling hydrogen desorption and absorption processes. The formation of LiBH4 and MgH2 resulted from the rehydrogenation between MgAlB4 and LiH could be helpful for the stability of reversible hydrogen storage performance.
Extreme high reversible capacity with over 8.0 wt% and excellent hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 combined with LiBH4 and Li3AlH6

Abstract:Magnesium hydride has attracted great attention because of its high theoretical capacity and outstanding reversibility, nevertheless, its practical applications have been restricted by the disadvantages of the sluggish kinetics and high thermodynamic stability. In this work, an unexpected high reversible hydrogen capacity over 8.0 wt% has been achieved from MgH2 metal hydride composited with small amounts of LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 complex hydrides, which begins to release hydrogen at 276 degrees C and then completely dehydrogenates at 360 degrees C. The dehydrogenated MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6 composite can fully reabsorb hydrogen below 300 degrees C with an excellent cycling stability. The composite exhibits a significant reduction of dehydrogenation activation energy from 279.7 kJ/mol (primitive MgH2) to 139.3 kJ/mol (MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6), as well as a remarkable reduction of dehydrogenation enthalpy change from 75.1 kJ/mol H-2 (primitive MgH2) to 62.8 kJ/mol H-2 (MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6). The additives of LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 not only enhance the cycling hydrogen capacity, but also simultaneously improve the reversible de/rehydrogenation kinetics, as well as the dehydrogenation thermodynamics. This notable improvement on the hydrogen absorption/desorption behaviors of the MgH2 + LiBH4/Li3AlH6 composite could be attributed to the dehydrogenated products including Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12 and MgAlB4, which play a key role on reducing the dehydrogenation activation energy and increasing diffusion rate of hydrogen. Meanwhile, the LiBH4 and Li3AlH6 effectively destabilize MgH2 with a remarkable reduction on dehydrogenation enthalpy change in terms of thermodynamics. In particular, the Li3Mg7, Mg17Al12 and MgAlB4 phases can reversibly transform into MgH2, Li3AlH6 and LiBH4 after rehydrogenation, which contribute to maintain a high cycling capacity. This constructing strategy can further promote the development of high reversible capacity Mg-based materials with suitable de/rehydrogenation properties. In-situ Synthesis of Amorphous Mg(BH4)2 and Chloride Composite Modified by NbF5 for Superior Reversible Hydrogen Storage Properties

Abstract:The solvent-free amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) composite was in-situ synthesized by ball milling LiBH4 and MgCl2. It is found that the onset dehydrogenation temperature of the as synthesized composite is 126.9 degrees C, which is roughly 156 degrees C lower than that of pristine Mg(BH4)(2). The activation energy of the amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) and pristine Mg(BH4)(2) for the first dehydrogenation step was calculated as 120.01 kJ/mol and 487.99 kJ/mol, respectively. Hence the kinetics improvement is certified by the lower Ea value of the dehydrogenation process. When adding NbF5 into the composite, the catalyzed composite exhibits better hydrogen storage properties compared to pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The catalyzed composite starts to release hydrogen at proximately 120 degrees C with a total capacity of 10.04 wt %. The reversibility of the catalyzed composite is also improved. The capacity of the catalyzed composite at the second cycle is 5.5 wt%. For the third and fourth cycles the catalyzed composite can still liberate 4 wt% H-2. Besides, the onset hydrogen desorption temperature during four cycles are extremely lower than those of pristine and amorphous Mg(BH4)(2). The peaks of the intermediate MgB12H12 is detected by FTIR as the regenerated hydrogenation product in the catalyzed composite. It can be speculated from the detailed analysis that there are mainly three reasons for the improved properties. Firstly, the additive NbF5 is favorable to enhance the hydrogen storage properties by modifying the dehydrogenation path and producing MgF2 and NbB2 as new products. Secondly, the in-situ formation of amorphous Mg(BH4)(2) is likely to improve the dehydrogenation properties of the samples due to its different reactivity comparing to crystal ones. Ultrahigh reversible hydrogen capacity and synergetic mechanism of 2LiBH4-MgH2 system catalyzed by dual-metal fluoride

Abstract:Developing convenient and applicable strategies to synthesize hydrogen storage composites with high capacity and favorable reversibility is vital in the field of novel energy materials. Herein, a system of 2LiBH4-MgH2 with K2TiF6 is synthesized, in which K2TiF6 can react with LiBH4 to form TiB2, LiF, KBH4. Such composite possesses low onset dehydrogenation temperatures, completely eliminated dehydrogenation induction period and fast kinetics with low activation energies of 100.3 kJ/mol. Considering that the reaction between K2TiF6 and LiBH4 can reduce the practical capacity, excess LiBH4 was added into the composite to offset the reduced dehydrogenation capacity. The cycling performances of the composite with excess LiBH4 are greatly improved. The composite with excess LiBH4 can completely absorb 9.4 wt% H2 at 200 °C, close to the practical operating temperatures of the fuel cell system on vehicle. This is exceedingly outstanding among the reversible properties of 2LiBH4-MgH2. Characterization analyses and theoretical calculations indicate the in situ formed TiB2, LiF, and KBH4 can perform stable synergetic catalytic effect on the hydrogen storage performances of 2LiBH4-MgH2 from thermodynamic and kinetic aspects. The TiB2 nanoparticles can improve dehydrogenation kinetics by acting as heterogeneous nucleation agents and modifying kinetic model. KBH4 can form eutectic composites with LiBH4 to start dehydrogenation at low temperatures. LiF can transform into LiH1-xFx during dehydrogenation and LiBH4-xFx during rehydrogenation. Such fluoride substitution can thermodynamically destabilize LiH and LiBH4 to improve hydrogen de/absorption properties. The novel synergetic mechanism provides a new and comprehensive inspiration for improving the reversible hydrogen storage properties of 2LiBH4-MgH2.

Abstract:2LiBH4–MgH2 is an attractive system for hydrogen storage. However, its dehydriding and rehydriding kinetics have to be further improved for practical applications. To solve these problems, three transition metal chlorides (FeCl2, CoCl2 and NiCl2) were introduced into the 2LiBH4–MgH2 system and their catalytic roles in the dehydrogenation–rehydrogenation properties were investigated systematically. The results show that all three chlorides can significantly enhance the dehydriding and rehydriding kinetics of the 2LiBH4–MgH2 system with/without hydrogen back pressure, and NiCl2 is the best modifier among them. The NiCl2-doped sample exhibits no incubation period for generating MgB2 during dehydrogenation. X-Ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analyses clearly reveal the phase formation of MgNi3B2, which may act as the nucleation site for MgB2 formation, and thus the incubation period shrinks. A highly homogeneous distribution of the in situ formed MgNi3B2 nanoclusters can significantly improve the dehydriding–rehydriding kinetics. Single-phase MgNi3B2 was successfully synthesized and a similar catalytic effect is obtained by directly doping identical MgNi3B2 into the 2LiBH4–MgH2 system, which results in a higher hydrogen storage capacity of 9.4 wt%.

Abstract:Resorcinol formaldehyde carbon aerogel (RFC)was synthesized in this paper to be used as a scaffold for nanoconfining 2LiBH(4)-LiAlH(4)composite. LiBH4 and LiAlH4 were nanoconfined into the pores of the prepared resorcinol formaldehyde carbon aerogel by a two-step melt-infiltration process. The microstructure evolution was investigated by XRD, FTIR analysis, and BET measurements. The hydrogen storage properties were studied by TPD, TG/DSC/MS measurements. The experimental results show that LiBH4 andLiAlH(4) are well dispersed in the scaffold after the melt infiltration process. The nano-confined 2LiBH(4)-LiAlH4 composite (denoted as 2LiBH(4)-LiAlH4/RFC) shows a two-step dehydrogenation process. The onset dehydrogenation temperatures for the two steps are 100 degrees C and 280 degrees C, respectively, which are 70 degrees C and 170 degrees C lower than that of the milled 2LiBH(4)-LiAlH4 mixture. The formation of AlB2 during the second dehydrogenation step alters the reaction pathway of LiBH4. The kinetic properties of the composite are greatly enhanced compared to the physical mixture of LiBH4 and LiAlH4. The nanoconfinement and the formation of AlB2 have a combined effect on the improvement of hydrogen storage properties for nanoconfined 2LiBH(4)-LiAlH4/RFC. It could be rehydrogenated at 350 degrees C and 5 MPa H-2. A reversible hydrogen storage capacity of 5.7 wt.% is achieved. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To obtain promising materials for hydrogen storage, a composite of Li3AlH6 and LiNH2 with molar ratio of 1:2 was prepared by ball-milling, and its hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The microstructures of the composite after hydrogen desorption/absorption were characterized by XRD and FTIR analysis. The results show that 0.65wt% H2 was released during ball-milling process and 5.97wt% H2 was desorbed when the post-milled composite was heated from room temperature to 450°C. The total hydrogen desorption capacity reached 6.62wt%. And no NH3 is detected by the mass spectrum (MS) analysis over dehydrogenation process. The hydrogen desorption process of Li3AlH6/2LiNH2 composite occurs according to the following reaction: Li3AlH6+2LiNH2→Li3AIN2+2LiH+4H2. Furthermore, 3.57wt% H2 can be reabsorbed at 400°C and under hydrogen pressure of 110bar.

Abstract:A significant improvement of hydrogen storage properties was achieved by introducing MgH(2) into the 6LiBH(4)-CaH(2) system. It was found that ~8.0 wt% of hydrogen could be reversibly stored in a 6LiBH(4)-CaH(2)-3MgH(2) composite below 400 °C and 100 bar of hydrogen pressure with a stepwise reaction, which is superior to the pristine 6LiBH(4)-CaH(2) and LiBH(4) samples. Upon dehydriding, MgH(2) first decomposed to convert to Mg and liberate hydrogen with an on-set temperature of ~290 °C. Subsequently, LiBH(4) reacted with CaH(2) to form CaB(6) and LiH in addition to further hydrogen release. Hydrogen desorption from the 6LiBH(4)-CaH(2)-3MgH(2) composite finished at ~430 °C in non-isothermal model, a 160 °C reduction relative to the 6LiBH(4)-CaH(2) sample. JMA analyses revealed that hydrogen desorption was a diffusion-controlled reaction rather than an interface reaction-controlled process. The newly produced Mg of the first-step dehydrogenation possibly acts as the heterogeneous nucleation center of the resultant products of the second-step dehydrogenation, which diminishes the energy barrier and facilitates nucleation and growth, consequently reducing the operating temperature and improving the kinetics of hydrogen storage.
