Abstract:Polyethylene (PE) mulch films are an important source of microplastics (MPs) in agricultural soils , which may further affect the bioavailability of coexisting pollutants. In this study, white (WM), black (BM), and silver-black (SM) PE mulch films were aged on the soil surface and under soil burial to simulate the two exposure patterns of abandoned mulch films in the field. Results indicated that the soil-surface exposure induced more pronounced aging characteristics, and WM seemed the most susceptible. Serious surface deterioration by aging led to a drastic decrease in the tensile properties of the films, suggesting the tendency to fragment. Oxygen-containing functional groups were generated on the film surfaces, with oxygen/carbon ratios increasing by up to 29 times, which contributed to the prominent increase in Pb adsorption on the film-derived MPs. Additionally, the film surface became more hydrophobic when exposed to the soil surface but more hydrophilic in the soil-burial exposure, which was in agreement with the change in triclosan adsorption, i.e., promotion and suppression, respectively. Aging generally decreased the desorption potential of the adsorbed pollutants in simulated gastrointestinal solutions due to increased interactions. By comparison, exposure patterns were revealed to be the critical factor for these changes, regardless of film types.

Abstract:Discarded Polyethylene (PE) mulches have posed a persistent pollution in the agricultural field. Although PE degraded by microbes has been reported, the effect on in situ soil environment is not completely understood. To determine the biodegradability and ecological impacts of PE-based mulches, we tested the biodegradation related properties of screened strains and analyzed change in soil quality and microbial community after covering with different mulches. Strain Bacillus aryabhattai 5-3 showed 3.85 ± 0.50% gravimetric weight loss after a 30 days incubation with PE-based mulch as the sole carbon source; Considerable pits and vast cavities were found on the surface using AFM and SEM. The hydrophobicity of mulch sheet was decreased to 68.9 ± 0.8°, FTIR identified that new oxidized groups were formed on the surfaces of incubated mulch. Additionally, the fluctuations of microbial communities indicate that synthetic mulch could replace the current commercial product to minimise agricultural pollution.
In situ degradation of low-density polyethylene film in irrigation maize field: Thickness-dependent effect

Abstract:Thickness of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) film might determine its mechanical strength, clean production and soil health. Yet, this issue is little understood. In situ aging effects were evaluated in LDPE films with the thickness of 0.006 mm, 0.008 mm, 0.010 mm and 0.015 mm in maize field. The data showed that maximum tensile force (TFmax), maximum tensile strength (TSmax) and elongation at break (EAB) were massively lowered with increasing thickness after aging. The greatest and lowest reduction magnitude of EAB was 27.6 % and 11.2 % in 0.006 mm and 0.015 mm films respectively. Also, the melting point (Tm) and crystallinity (Xc) under Differential Scanning Calorimeter (DSC) tended to decline with the increasing thickness. Moreover, the peak intensity of crystalline regions tended to transfer and concentrate on the amorphous regions, and such tendency became more pronounced in the thin films. Interestingly, there existed a pronounced distinct thickness-dependent effects on soil bulk density (SBD) and soil water-stable aggregate proportion. Thick plastic film mulching increased SBD but reduced the proportion of macroaggregates (mainly referred to 0.015 mm and 0.010 mm). In addition, thick film mulching slightly reduced the levels of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN), but significantly promoted the contents of soil labile C and N. Particularly, it significantly promoted above- & under-ground biomass of maize across two growing seasons ( p < 0.05). To sum up, thickening LDPE film may act as a promising solution to improve LDPE film residue recycling, while benefiting for higher productivity. However, thick film mulching may cause a certain adverse impact on soil structure, and further investigations would be needed in the future.

Abstract:With rising concerns about adverse impacts of agricultural plastic waste in the soil environment and microplastic problems, many options have been proposed to prevent agricultural plastic pollution. To evaluate the options environmentally, this study conducted a comparative life cycle assessment of mulching films with different thicknesses (0.01 mm and 0.014 mm), materials (polyethylene and poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate)), and end-of-life options (recycling, incineration and biodegradation). The results indicate that biodegradable film presents the lowest net environmental impacts in aquatic pollution and toxicity indicators, while the 0.014 mm polyethylene film performs the best in global warming potential and fossil resource depletion. Either reducing the soil content or increasing the collection rate of waste polyethylene films can reduce their environmental impacts, and the reducing proportions of 0.014 mm polyethylene films were found to be larger than those of 0.01 mm polyethylene films. In general, the biodegradable mulching film is found to be more environmental-friendly than polyethylene film, but potential improvement could be considered for greener design of the products by increasing biobased material. More efforts can be put on developing reliable inventory datasets of biodegradable materials production.

Abstract:Plastic mulching is widely used in croplands to improve yields, while its mismanagement leads to plastic pollution in rural areas. China has explored different approaches to manage post-use plastic mulching, while there is still inadequate research regarding their corresponding environmental impacts. This study establishes five plastic mulching management scenarios, i.e., plastic mulching disposed of in nature, substituting biodegradable plastic, recycling, incineration, and landfilling, and maize cultivation in rural areas of northern China was taken as the studied case. We determine the comprehensive environmental impacts through a life cycle assessment (LCA) approach and completed a field investigation to obtain local datasets. The impurity content of used polyethylene mulching (PEM), an essential parameter for the entire life-cycle environmental impact assessment, is 80.1% ± 9.5%, examined by on-site sampling and scanning electron microscope. Results show that: 1) the use of biodegradable mulching (BM) instead of traditional PEM reduces carbon emissions by 22.6%; 2) the increment of soil carbon flux caused in the application stage is more significant than that in the post-use stage; 3) incineration of post-use mulch causes relatively significant photochemical oxidant formation effect; furthermore, recycling of plastic mulching leads to negative impacts in terms of human toxicity effect, meanwhile the positive environmental impact of fossil depletion effect is 2.3 times higher than that of incineration. Reducing the rate of impurity content in wasted plastic mulching can reduce transportation costs and promote sustainable plastic pollution management in rural areas.

Abstract:Large proportions of plastic film residues are not recycled after their service life, posing a serious threat to the environment. Understanding and optimizing the disposal of discarded plastic film can be crucial to limit damage to the environment. In this study, we determined the potential environmental impact of different cultivation methods in terms of four endpoint damage categories, namely climate change, human health, ecosystems, and resource depletion, with specific emphasis on the disposal process of discarded plastic films. Plastic film mulching considerably increased damage per hectare in all endpoint categories. However, in three endpoint categories, damage per kilogram of yield produced was lower under plastic film mulching. Chemical fertilizer input was the most dominant contributor to environmental damage, accounting for approximately 60% of the total environmental impact. Recycling was the most beneficial strategy for offsetting and mitigating all endpoint damage categories compared with incineration and landfill. This positive environmental benefit of recycling can primarily be attributed to the fact that recycling discarded plastic film can reduce white waste and allow recycled plastic film to be reused as part of a new product.

Abstract:To determine the fates of the persistent pollutants cadmium (Cd) and micro-plastics in agricultural soils, an in-depth understanding of the interactions between Cd and mulching film is required. In the present work, pot experiments are conducted under natural conditions to study the influence of various Cd concentrations on the aging process of polyethylene mulching film in soil collected from Changzhi, Shanxi Province. The results indicate that during 150 days, the aging degree of the mulch film increases gradually as the increased Cd concentration in the soil. Further, the results of attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectrometry and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) demonstrate that the average vinyl index (VI) of the aging mulch film increases from 1.29 to 1.82, while the oxygen-to-carbon (O/C) ratio of the mulch film decreases significantly from 0.344 to 0.045, as the Cd concentration is increased from 0 to 10 mg kg-1. When the aging time exceeds 90 days, the oxygen-containing functional groups (C-O and CO) generated consumed by the adsorbed Cd. In addition, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements indicate that Cd both enhances the formation of hydroxyl radical (·OH) on the surface of the mulch film and prevents the combination of ·OH and electrons, thereby accelerating the aging of the mulch. Hence, the present study indicates that the presence of Cd will hasten the decomposition of mulch, which will inevitably result in the faster release of micro-plastics from the mulch into the soil environment.

Abstract:Environmental risk of multi-year polythene film mulching (PM) was evaluated and investigated. The location observation following 19-year (2000–2018) PM in irrigated region indicated that the cumulative accumulation of soil microplastics was as high as 2900 ± 19.5 n kg−1. Microplastic accumulation was tightly associated with soil plasticizer concentration (Pearson’s r = 0.728, p 0.05). Critically, total concentration of PAEs decreased by 6.43% in SM relative to CK, and by 9.61% in PM+SM relative to PM respectively. High throughput sequencing indicated that the proportions of predominant bacteria and fungi were totally lower in PM than those of organic mulching, particularly Sphingomonadaceae and Stachybotryaceae. KEGG analyses indicated that organic mulching promoted the metabolisms of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, benzoic acid (probability>75%) and heterologous organism metabolism (p<0.001), due to improved microbial community assembly. Therefore, organic mulching efficiently accelerated microbial mineralization of PM pollutants, and may act as a green solution to displace PM.

Abstract:In this study, we explored the aging processes of a commercial polyethylene (PE) mulch film under UV irradiation and compared the laboratory aged films with films aged in nature. Overall, the aged films obtained from laboratory conditions were similar with that from natural conditions. Among the investigated factors, UV irradiation was crucial in the aging of the films, producing cracks and oxygen-containing functional groups on the films surface, constantly with natural aging. The formation of cracks induced a decrease of mechanical strength as well as the formation of MPs on the surface. The chemical oxidations detected by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) usually happened after the observed physical changes during aging. Moreover, a protocol was developed for laboratory preparation of MPs with characteristics similar with that from environmental aging and PE MPs with sizes of 2–400 μm could be produced in large amounts at relatively short period of time.

Abstract:The use of plastic much films has been fundamental to promoting food production in many regions of the world. However, concern is growing about the progressive accumulation of plastic residues in soil after crop harvest and its subsequent impact on soil health and potential to enter the food chain. Although biodegradable films have been developed to prevent these problems, it is still unclear whether they are environmentally benign. Here we evaluated the physical and chemical breakdown of four commercial poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) based biodegradable mulch films (BMF1, BMF2, BMF3 and BMF4) in an agricultural soil over a 26-month period. Based on visual examination, degradation followed the series BMF4 > BMF1, BMF2 > BMF3. Importantly, microplastic residues (fragments <5 mm) still remained in the soil of all 4 plastic types after 2 years, suggesting that they are likely to accumulate over time if used on an annual basis. Viscosimetry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA) were used to characterise the breakdown process. Our results indicated that the degradation of the mulch film after burial in agricultural soil may be linked to the nature of the polymer but also to its manufacturing formulation. Although the peak changes of polyester in the infrared spectrum were not distinct, the plastic films showed other signs of degradation including a reduction in intrinsic viscosity after burial in soil. The different degradation rates of BMF1 and BMF2 at the molecular level may be due to the different CaCO3 contents. In conclusion, under field conditions, we show that slight variations in the formulations of commercial biodegradable mulch films leads to very different persistence rates in soil. Further, we conclude that their slow rate of degradation will ultimately lead to their progressive accumulation in soil if used repeatedly.

Abstract:Mulch film contaminates the environment while increasing agricultural yield. As such, the factors that impact the residual film management capacity of farmers must be identified, which would also be helpful for the sustainable development and security of agriculture. We investigated 10 counties across nine cities (states) by surveying 1284 households. The improved entropy-weighted composite index and the grey correlation analysis model were employed to measure the residual film management capacity from five dimensions: human capital, use behavior, management skills, public policy, and willingness. The entropy-weighted composite index results showed that residual film being harmful to the environment had the highest overall rate of 0.0745, followed by the effectiveness of mulch film, which was 0.0715. The results of the grey correlation analysis model showed that willingness to use biodegradable mulch film had the highest correlation of 0.8960, followed by educational level of the laborers, which was 0.8824. We found that residual film being harmful to the environment, effectiveness of mulch film, willingness to use biodegradable mulch film, and educational level of the laborers were the major factors influencing the residual mulch film pollution knowledge of households. Based on this finding, the government should increase subsidies for promoting biodegradable mulch film and publicize the hazards of residual films using diversified means in multiple channels.

As a result, the increasing residuals destroyed soil structure, affected agricultural environment, harmed the crop growth, and furthermore, affected the food safety and human health. So, government should strengthen environmental publicity to improve the understanding of the film pollution, work out the residual film management laws and regulations, develop the recycling economy to reuse the residuals, and research biodegradable films and other ways to prevent agricultural environment from pollution.

Abstract:In order to improve yields and crop traits, polymeric films are commonly used to cover soils like agricultural mulches. Its use provides important benefits to farmers and the environment, as they maintain humidity, temperature and prevent the growth of weeds. However, the most widely used mulches are mainly made of low-density polyethylene. The use of PE films or other non-biodegradable polymers present great environmental and economic disadvantages for responsible farmers, who must remove them before the next crop period. The objective of this chapter is to discuss the main properties presented by the biodegradable and bio-based materials that have recently been proposed for this application, what is their effect on the yields of different crops in which they have been tested, as well as their biodegradation time and their effect on the soil quality will also be analyzed. Finally, based on these findings and the recently approved new standard for biodegradable agricultural mulches, the materials that will set trends in the future will be remarked.
Impact of Management Strategies on Reducing of Mulching Film Residues Pollution in Arid Regions

Abstract:Plastic pollution caused by mulching film residues (MFRs) is escalating in arable lands, which affects the function of agricultural ecosystems, and poses a serious obstacle to agricultural sustainable development in arid regions. Internationally, increasing recycling rate of polyethylene (PE) film and adopting biodegradable films are recommended strategies to mitigate plastic pollution in farmland, aiming to increase agricultural sustainability and food security. However, impacts of the future of these strategies remain underexplored. This study estimated MFRs accumulation over the next 50 years under varying PE and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) film recovery scenarios: no recovery, and recovery rates increased to 80%, 85%, 90%, and 95%. Additionally, cumulative ecological effects (CEEs) of MFR pollution were assessed based on historical MFRs accumulations of 75 kg hm−2, 160 kg hm−2, 220 kg hm−2, 300 kg hm−2, and 400 kg hm−2, by evaluating direct and indirect ecological effects. The findings revealed that (1) with no recovery, PE film residues could increase by 480 kg hm−2, whereas achieving a 95% recovery rate could limit residues increasing to below the national threshold of 75 kg hm−2, outperforming the 80%, 85%, and 90% recovery rates. On the other hand, using PBAT film would maintain the increasing MFRs below 75 kg hm−2 regardless of recovery rate. (2) Without PE film recovery, CEEs would intensify significantly, as both the direct and indirect effects increase notably, while the CEEs of MFRs could maintain the current status or decrease under the strategy of 95% recovery rate of PE film and using PBAT film, similar to the variation of direct effects. However, indirect effects would persist due to ongoing microplastics (MPs) and phthalate esters (PAEs) released from residual films. Overall, a 95% PE film recycling rate and PBAT film usage emerged as particularly effective strategies for minimizing MFRs accumulation and mitigating ecological impacts over the next 50 years. Further research should prioritize the indirect ecological effects of MFRs, given their persistence despite reduction efforts. The results could provide a theoretical support for agricultural sustainable development in arid regions.

Biological Effect of Biodegradable Mulch Films on Maize and Their Degradation Properties

Abstract:Summary Over the past few decades , the use of traditional mulch film made of poly‐ethylene enhanced agriculture production worldwide , and meanwhile raised a range of agricultural and ecological concern associated with degradation of soil fertility due to residue accumulation . It has become an increasingly challenging issue for agricultural sustainability . As a consequence , biodegradable films are proposed as an effective solution to alleviate this issue . Among them , poly ( butyleneadipate‐co‐terephthalate) ( PBAT ) , a biodegradable aliphatic‐aromatic polyester , possesses similar mechanical properties to polyethylene and therefore is generally considered an ideal substitute for conventional films . This study aimed at making a comprehensive evaluation of several recently developed biodegradable films by comparing their biological effects and field degradation properties . Five biodegradable films with a main component of PBAT were applied to cover the beds of maize in an experimental field , and then the soil temperature , plant growth indices and yield components of maize were investigated . Meanwhile , the field degradation of both biodegradable and conventional films was assessed by a standard of degradation degree . The results showed that the biodegradable films , compared to bare plot , markedly raised soil temperatures at three observation depths ( 5 cm , 10 cm and 15 cm ) and this heat capturing effect was as pronounced as the conventional polyethylene film . The temperature boosting effect varied with soil depth and time , i .e . , the biggest diurnal fluctuation of temperature occurred at the depth of 5 cm in each treatment , while the least was at the depth of 15 cm . The growth of maize was significantly stimulated in all mulched plots , with the occurrence of seedling emergence and silking stage being 3 5 days and 10 13 days earlier than bare plots , respectively . A minor advantage of biodegradable film over conventional film was also observed . The highest chlorophyll content (indicated by SPAD) was found in the bare plot , followed by M2 , and M1 was the lowest , yet there were no significant differences among mulching treatments . By contrast , leaf area indices ( LAI) of the biodegradable films were significantly higher than non‐mulched plot , with the highest in M2 . At the jointing stage , the plant height under all mulched plots were greater than that under the bare plot . While at the maturity stage , plants in the bare plot had the highest height , and there were no significant differences among the five biodegradable films . The largest accumulation of nitrogen , phosphate and potassium in plants occurred in the bare plot , being significantly higher than in the mulched plots . The fresh yield , kernels per ear and 100‐kernel mass were significantly larger in all mulched plots than in the bare plot . The yield per plot of the biodegradable films was higher than that of the conventional film , yet no difference existed between the biodegradable films and the conventional film in terms of kernels per ear and 100‐kernel mass . Field observation revealed that the biodegradable films started losing integrity at approximately 20 days after application in the field . The earliest clear disappearance of film started at 90 days after application for M2 . While the relatively slow degradation was found in M1 and M5 , which were torn into separate subunits with roughly 10 cm cracks after 100 days of field exposure , reaching the 4th period of degradation . In sum , all the biodegradable films are capable of enhancing maize growth by improving soil temperature and even contribute a larger economic yield than the conventional film ; moreover , the biodegradable films maintain stability for approximately 20 days after application in the field and disappear after 90 100 days , demonstrating the applicable effectiveness for mulching as a substitute of the conventional film .

Abstract:Non-biodegradable polyolefin based plastic mulch residues in agricultural fields after the end of a crop cycle have raised several concerns as an environmental pollutant in recent years. This study explores the potential of Poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and Poly (butylene adipate- co -terephthalate) (PBAT) based compostable films reactively blended with compatibilizers and chain extenders as a promising solution to environmental challenges associated with traditional plastic mulch films. Epoxidized soybean oil (ESO) and Epoxy-functionalized styrene acrylic copolymer (ESA) have been used as reactive compatibilizers and chain extenders respectively. In-depth analysis of the mechanical, thermal, and barrier properties of the developed films, revealed that the PLA/PBAT blend films at 75:25 weight ratio in the presence of 5 phr ESO and 0.5 phr ESA exhibit improved performance characteristics for application as mulch films. Furthermore, the films were subjected to 360-h UV exposure to gauge their stability under prolonged exposure, specifically investigating changes in the carbonyl index. Additionally, a rigorous real-time field trial of the mulch films spanning eight months with various crops was carried out to understand their performance in practical agricultural settings. The study also involved the identification of microorganisms responsible for the degradation of the developed mulch films employing 16S rRNA sequencing.

Effects of Different Plastic Mulching Film on Soil Hydrothermal Status and Water Utilization by Spring Maize in Northwest China

Abstract:The problem of residual film pollution in farmland caused by polyethylene mulching films is serious. The application effects of different mulching films combined with drip irrigation on maize planting in the Ili area, Xinjiang, China, were explored. In this study, four types of mulching films and non-mulching treatment were used to study the degradation properties of different plastic mulching and their effects on the dynamic changes of soil moisture, heat, and crop yields of maize under drip irrigation. The results showed that after 160 days of mulching film, only small cracks appeared in polyethylene mulching films. The degradation performance of white oxo-biodegradable film treatment was optimal than the black oxo-biodegradable film treatment. The quality loss rate of the two biodegradable films were 52.26 and 48.48%, respectively. Various mulching film treatments could increase soil moisture in the early stage of maize growth. At the 0–60 cm soil layer, the soil moisture under the white oxo-biodegradable mulching film and black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatments were lower by 2.75 and 2.66% ( p < 0.05) than the white polyethylene mulching film and black polyethylene mulching film treatments. The soil water consumption was highest in the non-mulching treatment, followed by biodegradable film, and the small least value was observed in the polyethylene film treatment. The average soil temperature at depth of 0–15 cm in white polyethylene mulching film, black polyethylene mulching film, white oxo-biodegradable mulching film, and black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatments were 1.43, 1.16, 0.72 and 0.64°C higher than the non-mulching treatment, respectively. Mulching films treatment played a critical role in increasing production and improving water use efficiency. The black polyethylene mulching film treatment had the highest yield and the best water use efficiency. The black oxo-biodegradable mulching film treatment only reduces the yield by 0.33% compared to the black polyethylene mulching film treatment, and the water use efficiency was only reduced by 0.90% ( p > 0.05). Comprehensive analysis showed that black oxo-biodegradable mulching film could be used as a substitute for polyethylene mulching film and can be applied to the production practice of drip irrigation maize in the Ili area.

Abstract:The utilization of biodegradable mulch films (bio-MFs) is essential for agricultural safety. This study explored the effects of no MF (CK), aging bio-MF (BM), non-aging bio-MF (NBM), and aging polyethylene (PE)-MF (PEM) on swine manure composting. The results demonstrated that outdoor aging (45 days) accelerated the macroscopic degradation of bio-MF in the BM. A reduction in NH 4 + -N and NH 3 emissions in the initial composting was observed owing to an increase in the carbon source or the bulking effect provided by the MFs. N 2 O emissions from days 9 to 21 were higher in the PEM than other treatments because of the formation of anaerobic zone in the MF-based aggregates. An obvious increase of amoA in PEM indicated a promoted nitrification during the maturation phase, meanwhile the increase of NO 2 − -N and aggregate promoted denitrification. Altogether, MF influenced composting through the synergistic effects of increasing the carbon source, bulking effect, and aggregates.

Abstract:Soil contamination from film debris following the prolonged application of mulching film has emerged as a worldwide concern. However, the extent that mulching films contribute to soil microplastics, and the spatial distribution of soil contamination from film debris remain unclear. In this study, the cotton field in Xinjiang (China), which underwent film mulching for a prolonged period of 5–30 years, was selected as the research location. A total of 360 soil samples were collected, aiming to study the spatial distribution characteristics of mulching film debris pollution. The samples were extracted using the density flotation method combined with stereomicroscopic; the source, composition, abundance, and distribution characteristics of soil MPs were identified by the scanning electron microscopic, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analyses. In soil mulched for a 30 year period, the abundance of microplastics across the studied soil depth (0–60 cm) was 78.51±2.57 n/(100 g). The μ-FTIR analyses revealed that the composition of the microplastics matched that of polyethylene materials. Therefore, plastic mulching could be inferred as a major contributor to microplastic pollution in agricultural lands. Overall, it is necessary to study the distribution characteristics of plastic film remaining for further study of plastic pollution in farmland soils.

Abstract:Ultraviolet absorbers (UVAs) are emerging pollutants of concern owing to their environmental persistence and endocrine-disrupting effects. UVAs are added to agricultural films to prevent UV-induced degradation, potentially leading to the release of UVAs into the soil. In this study, the occurrence of four frequently used UVAs (UV-324, UV-326, UV-328, and UV-531) in film-mulched agricultural soils (using conventional polyethylene films and biodegradable films) was investigated. Results showed that the UVA concentrations were several orders of magnitude higher in film-mulched soil (mean 91.4 μg/kg) than in unmulched soil (mean 0.08 μg/kg), indicating that mulch films are important sources of UVAs released into agricultural soil. Notably, the mean UVA concentration was up to 10 times higher in biodegradable-film-mulched soils than in polyethylene (PE) film-mulched soils; this result is consistent with our finding that the mean UVA concentration was 448 times higher in commercial biodegradable films than in PE films. In simulated migration experiments, UVAs migrated more readily into the soil from the biodegradable film than from the PE film. To our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating that the use of mulch films may cause the accumulation of UVAs in agricultural soils as non-point sources. In particular, biodegradable plastic mulches can release more UVAs into soils.
