Abstract:Lake surface water temperature (LSWT) is of vital importance for hydrological and meteorological studies. The LSWT ground measurements in the Tibetan Plateau (TP) were quite scarce because of its harsh environment. Thermal infrared remote sensing is a reliable way to calculate historical LSWT. In this study, we present the first and longest 35-year (1981–2015) daytime lake-averaged LSWT data of 97 large lakes (>80 km<sup>2</sup> each) in the TP using the 4-km Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Global Area Coverage (GAC) data. The LSWT dataset, taking advantage of observations from NOAA's afternoon satellites, includes three time scales, i.e., daily, 8-day-averaged, and monthly-averaged. The AVHRR-derived LSWT has a similar accuracy (RMSE = 1.7 °C) to that from other data products such as MODIS (RMSE = 1.7 °C) and ARC-Lake (RMSE = 2.0 °C). An inter-comparison of different sensors indicates that for studies such as those considering long-term climate change, the relative bias of different AVHRR sensors cannot be ignored. The proposed dataset should be, to some extent, a valuable asset for better understanding the hydrologic/climatic property and its changes over the TP.

Abstract:Lake surface water temperature (LSWT) is sensitive to long-term changes in thermal structure of lakes and regional air temperature. In the context of global climate change, recent studies showed a significant warming trend of LSWT based on investigating 291 lakes (71% are large lakes, ≥50 km 2 each) globally. However, further efforts are needed to examine variation in LSWT at finer regional spatial and temporal scales. The Tibetan Plateau (TP), known as ‘the Roof of the World’ and ‘Asia’s water towers’, exerts large influences on and is sensitive to regional and even global climates. Aiming to examine detailed changing patterns and potential driven mechanisms for temperature variations of lakes across the TP region, this paper presents the first comprehensive data set of 15-year (2001–2015) nighttime and daytime LSWT for 374 lakes (≥10 km 2 each), using MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) Land Surface Temperature (LST) products as well as four lake boundary shapefiles (i.e., 2002, 2005, 2009, and 2014) derived from Landsat/CBERS/GaoFen-1 satellite images. The data set itself reveals significant information on LSWT and its changes over the TP and is an indispensable variable for numerous applications related to climate change, water budget analysis (particularly lake evaporation), water storage changes, glacier melting and permafrost degradation, etc.

Abstract:Under the background of global warming, the Tibet Plateau shows a trend of warming and wetting. Remote sensing data can be used to effectively monitor the spatial and temporal changes of the surface water on the Tibet Plateau. Due to the dynamic characteristics of the water, and in order to study the long-term impact of climate and other factors on the water of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, we used the AVHRR daily reflectance time series from 1982 to 2020 to produce the 39-year daily water body mapping product (including water freezing information) on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. The overall accuracy of our product is up to 88.18% based on validation samples selected from 30m Landsat images. This product can provide fundamental data support for long-term water monitoring on the Qinghai Tibet Plateau.

Abstract:Long-term datasets of number and size of lakes over the Tibetan Plateau (TP) are among the most critical components for better understanding the interactions among the cryosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere at regional and global scales. Due to the harsh environment and the scarcity of data over the TP, data accumulation and sharing become more valuable for scientists worldwide to make new discoveries in this region. This paper, for the first time, presents a comprehensive and freely available data set of lakes' status (name, location, shape, area, perimeter, etc.) over the TP region dating back to the 1960s, including three time series, i.e., the 1960s, 2005, and 2014, derived from ground survey (the 1960s) or high-spatial-resolution satellite images from the China-Brazil Earth Resources Satellite (CBERS) (2005) and China's newly launched GaoFen-1 (GF-1, which means high-resolution images in Chinese) satellite (2014). The data set could provide scientists with useful information for revealing environmental changes and mechanisms over the TP region.
How Well Do the ERA‐Interim, ERA‐5, GLDAS‐2.1 and NCEP‐R2 Reanalysis Datasets Represent Daily Air Temperature over the Tibetan Plateau?

Abstract:Snow and glacier are important components in the hydrological cycle of the Tibetan Plateau (TP). Air temperature, as the main driver in freezing and thawing processes, becomes vital for hydrological modelling and prediction in this region. Due to a sparse ground gauging network, spatial density of air temperature measurement is insufficient for hydro-meteorological studies. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify the best representative temperature data for hydrological applications from four widely used reanalysis products, including ERA-Interim, ERA-5, GLDAS-2.1 and NCEP-R2, with reference to in situ measurements and gridded snow depth from the year 2008-2017 over the entire TP. To reduce errors, Bayesian Joint Probability (BJP) approach based on K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN) classification algorithm (KNN-BJP) is proposed to post-process gridded reanalyses. The results indicate that all the reanalysis datasets provide highly correlated but cold biased air temperature. The correlation ecoefficiency is greater than 0.85. The cold biases are near-3 degrees Cand mainly distributed in the southeastern TP. Bias in daily maximum temperature during Spring is greater than-8 degrees Cfor most stations. ERA-Interim is found to have the closest agreement with in situ measurements, closely followed by GLDAS-2.1. KNN-BJP is found to be effective within a distance smaller than5 degrees. After post-processing, the prominent underestimation is efficiently corrected with Bias near 0. RMSE is markedly reduced to be smaller than2.5 degrees C. The post-processed ERA-5 and GLDAS-2.1 are as accurate as ERA-Interim, but able to provide more detailed information for extreme events due to their finer spatial resolution. Thus, ERA-5 and GLDAS-2.1 are more recommended to represent air temperature in the TP. Snow depth as complementary reference data is able to present spatial variance of air temperature. Our study can help alleviate the problem of sparse air temperature data over the TP.

Abstract:Thousands of lakes on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) play a critical role in the regional water cycle, weather, and climate. In recent years, the areas of TP lakes underwent drastic changes and have become a research hotspot. However, the characteristics of the lake-atmosphere interaction over the high-altitude lakes are still unclear, which inhibits model development and the accurate simulation of lake climate effects. The source region of the Yellow River (SRYR) has the largest outflow lake and freshwater lake on the TP and is one of the most densely distributed lakes on the TP. Since 2011, three observation sites have been set up in the Ngoring Lake basin in the SRYR to monitor the lake-atmosphere interaction and the differences among water-heat exchanges over the land and lake surfaces. This study presents an eight-year (2012–19), half-hourly, observation-based dataset related to lake–atmosphere interactions composed of three sites. The three sites represent the lake surface, the lakeside, and the land. The observations contain the basic meteorological elements, surface radiation, eddy covariance system, soil temperature, and moisture (for land). Information related to the sites and instruments, the continuity and completeness of data, and the differences among the observational results at different sites are described in this study. These data have been used in the previous study to reveal a few energy and water exchange characteristics of TP lakes and to validate and improve the lake and land surface model. The dataset is available at National Cryosphere Desert Data Center and Science Data Bank.

Abstract:Abstract. The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a critical role in influencing regional and global climate, via both thermal and dynamical mechanisms. Meanwhile, as the largest high-elevation part of the cryosphere outside the polar regions, with vast areas of mountain glaciers, permafrost and seasonally frozen ground, the TP is characterized as an area sensitive to global climate change. However, meteorological stations are sparely and biased distributed over the TP, owing to the harsh environmental conditions, high elevations, complex topography, and heterogeneous surfaces. Moreover, due to the weak representative of the stations, atmospheric conditions and the local land-atmosphere coupled system over the TP as well as its effects on surrounding regions are poorly quantified. This paper presents a long-term (2005–2016) dataset of hourly land-atmosphere interaction observations from an integrated high-elevation, cold region observation network, which is composed of six field observation and research platforms on the TP. In-situ observations, at the hourly resolution, consisting of measurements of micrometeorology, surface radiation, eddy covariance (EC), and soil temperature and soil water content profiles. Meteorological data were monitored by automatic weather station (AWS) or a planetary boundary layer (PBL) observation system composed of multiple meteorological element instruments. Multilayer soil hydrothermal data were recorded to capture vertical variations in soil temperature and water content and to study the freeze-thaw processes. In addition, to capture the high-frequency vertical exchanges of energy, momentum, water vapor and carbon dioxide within the atmospheric boundary layer, an EC system consisting of an ultrasonic anemometer and an infrared gas analyzer was installed at each station. The release of these continuous and long-term datasets with hourly time resolution represents a leap forward in scientific data sharing over the TP, and it has been partially used in the past to assist in understanding key land surface processes. This dataset is described here comprehensively for facilitating a broader multidisciplinary community by enabling the evaluation and development of existing or new remote sensing algorithms as well as geophysical models for climate research and forecasting. A Dataset of 190 Lakes' Ice Phenology on the Tibetan Plateau Extracted from AMSR2 Data

Abstract:Abstract. The utilization of passive microwave land‒water mixed pixels in extracting lake ice phenology has been underestimated. There are still many small and medium-sized lakes whose ice phenology has not been recorded, especially in regions such as the Tibetan Plateau, for which there are very few in situ observations. In this study, the changing characteristics of mixed pixels during freeze‒thaw processes are discussed. Using air temperature to reduce the seasonal variation in brightness temperature series, Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer 2 (AMSR2) data were used to extract the ice phenology of 194 lakes that could represent 78 % of the total lake area on the Tibetan Plateau from September 2012 to August 2022. The lake ice phenology results show high consistency compared with the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived lake ice phenology dataset and demonstrate better performance than the existing AMSR2-derived dataset. This ice phenology dataset covers the largest number of lakes in the Tibetan Plateau region, fills a gap or increases the integrity of ice phenology records for at least one hundred small lakes and provides complete pixel-scale freeze‒thaw processes on the lake surface. The dataset will provide valuable information to the user community about the spatial distribution of and changes in ice cover in lakes, especially small lakes, over the last decade. Lake Surface Water Temperature Change over the Tibetan Plateau from 2001 to 2015: A Sensitive Indicator of the Warming Climate

Abstract:The Tibetan Plateau (TP) plays a significant role in the Earth's climate system. This letter examines the nighttime lake surface water temperature (LSWT) of 374 lakes (≥10 km2 each) over the TP for the past 15 years (2001–2015). An overall warming trend (0.037 °C/year) is found and it is consistent with the warming air temperature (0.036 °C/year) over the TP, with the vast majority of the lakes (70%, with 28% of which are significant) showing warming (0.076 °C/year) and the rest (30%, with 37% of which are significant) showing cooling (−0.053 °C/year). This astonishing contrast was controlled by different water sources recharging these lakes: (1) warming LSWT due to increased precipitation (central and northern TP) or permafrost degradation (northwestern TP) and (2) cooling LSWT due to increased glacier meltwater (southwestern TP), revealing LSWT a sensitive indicator to climate change that triggered different regional responses in precipitation, permafrost, and glacier changes over the TP. This study helps improve our understanding of high‐altitude lakes and their changing mechanisms under the warming climate.
A global historical twice-daily (daytime and nighttime) land surface temperature dataset produced by AVHRR observations from 1981 to 2005

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is a key variable for monitoring and evaluating global long-term climate change. However, existing satellite-based twice-daily LST products only date back to 2000, which makes it difficult to obtain robust long-term temperature variations. In this study, we developed the first global historical twice-daily LST dataset (GT-LST), with a spatial resolution of 0.05°, using Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) Level-1b Global Area Coverage (GAC) data from 1981 to 2005. The GT-LST product was generated using four main processes: (1) GAC data reading, calibration, and pre-processing using open-source Python libraries; (2) cloud detection using the AVHRR-Phase I algorithm; (3) land surface emissivity estimation using an improved method considering annual land cover changes; and (4) LST retrieval based on a nonlinear generalized split-window algorithm. Validation with in situ measurements from Surface Radiation Budget (SURFRAD) sites showed that the overall root-mean-square errors of GT-LST varied from 2.0 K to 3.9 K, and nighttime LSTs were typically better than daytime LSTs. Inter-comparison with a common LST product (i.e., MYD11A1) revealed that the overall root-mean-square-difference (RMSD) was approximately 3.2 K, a positive bias was obtained for GT-LST, and relatively large RMSDs were obtained during the daytime, spring and summer. Furthermore, we compared our newly generated dataset with a global AVHRR daytime LST product at the selected measurements of SURFRAD sites (i.e., measurements of these two satellite datasets were valid), which revealed similar accuracies for the two datasets. However, GT-LST can additionally provide nighttime LST, which can be combined with daytime observations estimating relatively accurate monthly mean LST under all-sky conditions, with RMSE of 4.1 K. Finally, we compared GT-LST with a regional twice-daily AVHRR LST product over continental Africa in different seasons, with RMSDs ranging from 2.1 to 4.3 K. Considering these advantages, the proposed dataset provides a better data source for a range of research applications. Long-term River Water Temperature Reconstruction and Investigation: A Case Study of the Dongting Lake Basin, China

Abstract:Water temperature is a fundamental property of river habitats and aquatic ecosystems. In some cases, assessing water temperature changes is restrained by the availability of historical observation. This study proposed a framework to address the water temperature data scarcity in thermal regime assessment by incorporating the long short-term memory (LSTM) network and the time series technologies. The factors affecting water temperature included air temperature, evaporation, and streamflow. Driven by the historical observation of these factors, the LSTM network produced long-term water temperature series. The time series technologies unraveled the temporal dynamics of the reconstructed water temperature. The trend, periodicity, and complexity were investigated using linear regression, trend-free pre-whitening Mann-Kendall test, Sen's slope, wavelet transform, and moving sample entropy. The framework was applied in the Dongting Lake Basin, China, which drains four tributaries: Xiangjiang, Zishui, Yuanjiang, and Lishui Rivers. The LSTM network reconstructed the monthly water temperature series from 1960 to 2020, which was good surrogate data for thermal regime evaluation. The annual water temperature of the four tributaries increased significantly, with an average warming rate of 0.15 °C per decade. Heterogeneity of tendency and changing rates existed across sub-basins and months, and the warming water temperature dominated the variation. A significant oscillation of a one-year period across six decades was identified in the Dongting Lake Basin. The water temperature complexity decreased significantly in the Xiangjiang, Zishui, and Yuanjiang Rivers, while it increased significantly in the Lishui River. The case study indicated that the framework was practicable and flexible with explicit structure. It could be applied in other basins to address water temperature data scarcity and support the comprehensive riverine thermal regime assessment.

Furthermore, we compared our newly generated dataset with a global AVHRR daytime LST product at the selected measurements of SURFRAD sites (i.e., measurements of these two satellite datasets were valid), which revealed similar accuracies for the two datasets. Abstract:The Chinese Tian Shan (also known as the Chinese Tianshan Mountains, CTM) have a complex ecological environmental system. They not only have a large number of desert oases but also support many glaciers. The arid climate and the shortage of water resources are the important factors restricting the area's socioeconomic development. This study presents a unique high-resolution (1 km, 6-hourly) air temperature data set for the Chinese Tian Shan (41.1814-45.9945 degrees N, 77.3484-96.9989 degrees E) from 1979 to 2016 based on a robust elevation correction framework. The data set was validated by 24 meteorological stations at a daily scale. Compared to original ERA-Interim temperature, the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient increased from 0.90 to 0.94 for all test sites. Approximately 24% of the root-mean-square error was reduced from 3.75 to 2.85 degrees C. A skill score based on the probability density function, which was used to validate the reliability of the new data set for capturing the distributions, improved from 0.86 to 0.91 for all test sites. The data set was able to capture the warming trends compared to observations at annual and seasonal scales, except for winter. We concluded that the new high-resolution data set is generally reliable for climate change investigation over the Chinese Tian Shan. However, the new data set is expected to be further validated based on more observations. This data set will be helpful for potential users to improve local climate monitoring, modeling, and environmental studies in the Chinese Tian Shan. The data set includes 288 nc files and one user guidance txt file.

Abstract:Abstract Lake area change in the Tibetan plateau is an important indicator for climate change assessment. To overcome the temporal inconsistency of optical remote sensing-based lake area detections, a land surface temperature (LST)-based detection scheme was proposed by utilizing the big difference between land and water surface temperatures. A trend test conducted by the Mann–Kendall (MK) method was successfully applied to investigate lake area variation from 2000 to 2018 with the use of the annual mean temperature information derived from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) LST daily product. A comparison with the monitoring results from Landsat images indicates the proposed method can provide spatial distributions of lake area change with high accuracy. More importantly, the temporal variation of annual mean LST provides a special way to detect the abrupt change year (ACY) in lake area.The ACYs of most lakes mainly occur from 2004 to 2012. For an individual lake, the ACY offers vital information about the lake area change process. In summary, this work demonstrates the good potential of the LST-based method for lake area monitoring and assessment.

Abstract:Land surface temperature (LST) is an important environment variable in the energy and water transfers between the atmosphere and the ground. A detailed understanding of the spatio-temporal variations of land surface temperature is critical for effectively studying climate, vegetation, hydrology, etc. In this paper, the AQUA/MODIS LST data from 2003 to 2009 were adopted to study the spatio-temporal variations of land surface temperature in the Bosten Lake Basin. The Harmonic Analysis of Time-Series (HANTS) algorithm was employed to reconstruct the cloud-free LST time-series and distill harmonics. Based on the HANTS harmonics, the spatial and temporal variations of land surface temperature in the Bosten Lake basin were analyzed.

Abstract:Abstract. The management and conservation of lakes should be conducted in the context of catchments because lakes collect water and materials from their upstream catchments. Thus, the datasets of catchment-level characteristics are essential for limnology studies. Lakes are widely spread on the Tibetan Plateau (TP), with a total lake area exceeding 50 000 km2, accounting for more than half of the total lake area in China. However, there has been no dataset of lake-catchment characteristics in this region to date. This study constructed the first dataset of lake-catchment characteristics for 1525 lakes with areas from 0.2 to 4503 km2 on the TP. Considering that large lakes block the transport of materials from upstream to downstream, lake catchments are delineated in two ways: the full catchment, which refers to the full upstream-contributing area of each lake, and the inter-lake catchments, which are obtained by excluding the contributing areas of upstream lakes larger than 0.2 km2 from the full catchment. There are six categories (i.e., lake body, topography, climate, land cover/use, soil and geology, and anthropogenic activity) and a total of 721 attributes in the dataset. Besides multi-year average attributes, the time series of 16 hydrological and meteorological variables are extracted, which can be used to drive or validate lumped hydrological models and machine learning models for hydrological simulation. The dataset contains fundamental information for analyzing the impact of catchment-level characteristics on lake properties, which on the one hand, can deepen our understanding of the drivers of lake environment change, and on the other hand can be used to predict the water and sediment properties in unsampled lakes based on limited samples. This provides exciting opportunities for lake studies in a spatially explicit context and promotes the development of landscape limnology on the TP. Abstract:Lake surface temperature (LST) is a significant indicator of lake physical states and energy fluxes. This paper integrates multi-dates Landsat 8 thermal data with extensive in situ measurements to retrieve LST of Alaska lakes, and analyses temperature patterns across spatial scales, intra and interlakes. Our analysis shows that inside a lake, LST is relatively homogeneous and largely isothermal under strong wind, while larger temperature difference may exist during calm days. Warmer or cooler temperature gradients along wind direction are found for both coastal and inland lakes. At regional scale, small, deep lakes and lakes in inland and/ or southern latitude are more likely to have higher mean temperatures across western ACP during summer season.

Abstract:Abstract. Water clarity serves as a sensitive tool for understanding the spatial pattern and historical trend in lakes' trophic status. Despite the wide availability of remotely sensed data, this metric has not been fully explored for long-term environmental monitoring. To this end, we utilized Landsat top-of-atmosphere reflectance products within Google Earth Engine in the period 1984–2018 to retrieve the average Secchi disk depth (SDD) for each lake in each year. Three SDD datasets were used for model calibration and validation from different field campaigns mainly conducted during 2004–2018. The red / blue band ratio algorithm was applied to map SDD for lakes (>0.01 km2) based on the first SDD dataset, where R2=0.79 and relative RMSE (rRMSE) =61.9 %. The other two datasets were used to validate the temporal transferability of the SDD estimation model, which confirmed the stable performance of the model. The spatiotemporal dynamics of SDD were analyzed at the five lake regions and individual lake scales, and the average, changing trend, lake number and area, and spatial distribution of lake SDDs across China were presented. In 2018, we found the number of lakes with SDD <2 m accounted for the largest proportion (80.93 %) of the total lakes, but the total areas of lakes with SDD of 4 m were the largest, both accounting for about 24.00 % of the total lakes. During 1984–2018, lakes in the Tibetan–Qinghai Plateau region (TQR) had the clearest water with an average value of 3.32±0.38 m, while that in the northeastern region (NLR) exhibited the lowest SDD (mean 0.60±0.09 m). Among the 10 814 lakes with SDD results for more than 10 years, 55.42 % and 3.49 % of lakes experienced significant increasing and decreasing trends, respectively. At the five lake regions, except for the Inner Mongolia–Xinjiang region (MXR), more than half of the total lakes in every other region exhibited significant increasing trends. In the eastern region (ELR), NLR and Yungui Plateau region (YGR), almost more than 50 % of the lakes that displayed increase or decrease in SDD were mainly distributed in the area range of 0.01–1 km2, whereas those in the TQR and MXR were primarily concentrated in large lakes (>10 km2). Spatially, lakes located in the plateau regions generally exhibited higher SDD than those situated in the flat plain regions. Abstract:This dataset consist of three products including: (1) Lake ice thickness of 11 large lakes measured by satellite altimeters for 2002-2019; (2) Lake ice thickness and lake surface snow depth of 1260 lakes with an area > 50 km2 in the Northern Hemisphere modeled by a one-dimensional remote sensing lake ice model for 2003-2018; (3) Future lake ice thickness and surface snow depth for 2091-2099 modeled by the lake ice model with a modified ice growth module. This daily lake ice and snow thickness dataset could provide a benchmark for the estimation of global lake ice and snow mass, thereby improving our understanding of the ecological and economical significance of fresh water ice as well as its response to climate change.
