Abstract:A larger use of natural gas in internal combustion engines will reduce the dependence upon petroleum imports. However, large variations in gas composition as a result of the gas origin and/or gas treatments applied can affect engine performance and emissions. This study used a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics internal combustion engine model (validated with experimental data) to investigate the effect of adding heavier hydrocarbons (ethane and propane) to the gas mix. The simulation investigated the effects of spark timing, intake pressure, equivalence ratio, and engine speed when the engine operated with six different natural gas blends (methane number from 50 to 100 and Wobbe index from 48 to 58) that had a nonlinear relationship between the methane number and the Wobbe index. The results showed that a lower methane number and a higher Wobbe index increased and advanced in-cylinder pressure, advanced the combustion phasing, decreased the ignition lag, and shortened the combustion duration, regardless of the operating condition as a result of the higher laminar flame speed and energy density. In addition, it increased nitrogen oxides emissions but lowered unburned hydrocarbon emissions. A higher sensitivity to gas composition was found when the methane number was lower than 70. Moreover, the results suggest that gas composition will not affect lean-burn operation if the methane number is above 70. This suggests that the engine control system of a diesel engine converted to lean-burn natural gas spark-ignition operation will adjust to changes in natural gas composition as long as the methane number of the gas is at least 70.
The Study and Application of Equation of State of Methane

Abstract:A new version of Martin-Hou equation of state with 27 constantsis presented. The constants are checked and selected by the statistical analysis. The values of the constants for methane are evaluated by using the PVT data in the single phase region of 90K ~ 400K at pressures up to 50MPa and vapor liquid equilibrium data in the co-existing liquid and vapor phases. The new equation of state can not only give good results for PVT in single and vapor-liquid equilibrium in the co-existing phases, but also predict enthalpies，entropies and heat capacities very well. So the new equation of states can be used as a satisfactory equation of state for fluid methane. The presented equation of state can give equivalent or even better results than those of Benedict-Webb-Rubin equation of state with 33 constants modified by McCarty.

Abstract:Combustion is a kind of important reaction that affects people's daily lives and the development of aerospace. Exploring the reaction mechanism contributes to the understanding of combustion and the more efficient use of fuels. Ab initio quantum mechanical (QM) calculation is precise but limited by its computational time for large-scale systems. In order to carry out reactive molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for combustion accurately and quickly, we develop the MFCC-combustion method in this study, which calculates the interaction between atoms using QM method at the level of MN15/6-31G(d). Each molecule in systems is treated as a fragment, and when the distance between any two atoms in different molecules is greater than 3.5 Å, a new fragment involved two molecules is produced in order to consider the two-body interaction. The deviations of MFCC-combustion from full system calculations are within a few kcal/mol, and the result clearly shows that the calculated energies of the different systems using MFCC-combustion are close to converging after the distance thresholds are larger than 3.5 Å for the two-body QM interactions. The methane combustion was studied with the MFCC-combustion method to explore the combustion mechanism of the methane-oxygen system.

Abstract:Abstract The generation of reference data for deep learning models is challenging for reactive systems, and more so for combustion reactions due to the extreme conditions that create radical species and alternative spin states during the combustion process. Here, we extend intrinsic reaction coordinate (IRC) calculations with ab initio MD simulations and normal mode displacement calculations to more extensively cover the potential energy surface for 19 reaction channels for hydrogen combustion. A total of ∼290,000 potential energies and ∼1,270,000 nuclear force vectors are evaluated with a high quality range-separated hybrid density functional, ω B97X-V, to construct the reference data set, including transition state ensembles, for the deep learning models to study hydrogen combustion reaction.

Abstract:We develop a fragment-based ab initio molecular dynamics (FB-AIMD) method for efficient dynamics simulation of the combustion process. In this method, the intermolecular interactions are treated by a fragment-based many-body expansion in which three- or higher body interactions are neglected, while two-body interactions are computed if the distance between the two fragments is smaller than a cutoff value. The accuracy of the method was verified by comparing FB-AIMD calculated energies and atomic forces of several different systems with those obtained by standard full system quantum calculations. The computational cost of the FB-AIMD method scales linearly with the size of the system, and the calculation is easily parallelizable. The method is applied to methane combustion as a benchmark. Detailed reaction network of methane reaction is analyzed, and important reaction species are tracked in real time. The current result of methane simulation is in excellent agreement with known experimental findings and with prior theoretical studies.
Brillouin Scattering Study of Liquid Methane under High Pressures and High Temperatures

Abstract:Brillouin scattering measurements were performed on liquid methane using diamond anvil cell along five isotherms and at the pressures up to solidification points. Sound velocity, refractive index, and adiabatic bulk modulus of liquid methane as function of pressure were determined with the measurements from the platelet and backscattering geometries. The maximum pressure and temperature reached up to 5.12 GPa and 539 K. The sound velocity, refractive index, and adiabatic bulk modulus increased with pressure along each isotherm. The equation of state of liquid methane was determined from the present Brillouin results.

Abstract:We investigate the stability and dissociation of methane, which is the most abundant organic molecule in the universe, using diamond anvil cell (DAC) with in situ Raman spectroscopy up to 903 K and 21 GPa. At the temperatures of 793 and 723 K and the corresponding pressures of 16.15 and 20.30 GPa, methane dissociates to form carbon 'soot' and heavier hydrocarbons involving C=C and C bonds. However, if the pressure is not very high, methane remains stability up to the highest temperature of 903K of the work. The four symmetric C-H bonds of methane split at high temperatures and at high pressures, and there is at least one phase transition of crystalline symmetry from face centred cubic (fcc) to hexagonal close packed (hcp) before dissociation.

Abstract:A fan-stirred combustion vessel is used to study the premixed turbulent combustion of diesel, Gas to Liquids (GTL) and 50/50 diesel-GTL and to generate these datasets. A numerical simulation approach is implemented for modelling the premixed combustion of the three fuels under different thermodynamics and turbulence initial conditions, using Zimont Turbulent Flame Speed Closure (Zimont TFC) model. Different parameters are obtained from these simulation runs such as turbulent eddy viscosity (µ), turbulent kinetic energy (k), Damkohler number (Da), Reynolds number (ReT) and turbulent flame speed (St). The raw, filtered and pre-processed data are imported from ANSYS Fluent and then listed on filtered tables for the ease of accessibility. These datasets can be then used to perform research in different related areas such as chemical kinetic mechanisms, ignition delay time, flame ignition mechanisms and flame extinction and diffusion. Also, they can be employed to further understand trends, patterns, and anomalies in data. In addition, they can be compared with other numerical models to establish a robust knowledge about the modelling of premixed turbulent combustion. Skeletal Reaction Models for Methane Combustion

Abstract:A local-sensitivity-analysis technique is employed to generate new skeletal reaction models for methane combustion from the foundational fuel chemistry model (FFCM-1). The sensitivities of the thermo-chemical variables with respect to the reaction rates are computed via the forced-optimally time dependent (f-OTD) methodology. In this methodology, the large sensitivity matrix containing all local sensitivities is modeled as a product of two low-rank time-dependent matrices. The evolution equations of these matrices are derived from the governing equations of the system. The modeled sensitivities are computed for the auto-ignition of methane at atmospheric and high pressures with different sets of initial temperatures, and equivalence ratios. These sensitivities are then analyzed to rank the most important (sensitive) species. A series of skeletal models with different number of species and levels of accuracy in reproducing the FFCM-1 results are suggested. The performances of the generated models are compared against FFCM-1 in predicting the ignition delay, the laminar flame speed, and the flame extinction. The results of this comparative assessment suggest the skeletal models with 24 and more species generate the FFCM-1 results with an excellent accuracy.

Here, through extensive studies with a state-of-the-art ab initio and neural network method, we present a potential energy surface of the O(3P) + CH4 → OH + CH3 reaction on the ground state 13A and the first excited state 23A. In this work, the energies of 10 167 points covering all important regions are obtained with state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field calculations and then fitted using the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm with a root-mean-square error of 0.391 and 0.442 kcal/mol for the 13A and 23A states, respectively. This study explores the characteristics of the radical van der Waals (VdW) complex and reveals a detailed mechanism of the methane combustion initial reaction. Within the scope of this mechanism, this surface gives a fairly accurate description of the regions around the saddle point, conical intersection, and vdW wells in the entrance for efficient computational simulations. As a theoretical study on a prototypical polyatomic reaction, it is hopeful that this work will modify our understanding of the primary process in hydrocarbon combustion.

Comparison of methane combustion mechanisms using laminar burning velocity measurements

Abstract:Large amount of experimental data for laminar burning velocity (LBV) measurements of methane (+ H2/CO) − oxygen − diluent mixtures (5500 data points in 646 datasets) covering wide ranges of equivalence ratio, diluent ratio, cold side temperature and pressure were collected from 111 publications. The diluents included N2, H2O, CO2, Ar and He. The data files are available on the ReSpecTh site (http://respecth.hu). Performances of 12 methane combustion mechanisms on reproducing these LBV measurements were analyzed according to experiment types and conditions. Most mechanisms could predict well the LBVs for stoichiometric and fuel-lean mixtures and for diluent ratios higher than 60%. The performances of several mechanisms were relatively poor at other conditions. Focusing on the operating conditions of natural gas engines, we recommend the application of mechanisms FFCM-I-2016, SanDiego-2014, and NUIG1.1-2021 for engine simulations. Mechanisms Aramco-II-2016, Konnov-2009, Caltech-2015 and Glarborg-2018 have the lowest average errors for the reproduction of all available methane LBV data. Using local sensitivity analysis on the most accurate mechanisms, we identified 29 important elementary reactions, which, however, were not present in all the 12 mechanisms. We also collected large amount of directly measured and theoretically calculated rate coefficients for these reactions and compared them with the rate coefficients used in the 12 mechanisms. Reactions found important in any of the Aramco-II-2016, Konnov-2009 and Glarborg-2018 mechanisms, but missing from the Aramco-II-2016, Konnov-2009, Glarborg-2018, Caltech-2015, FFCM-I-2016 and NUIG1.1-2021 mechanisms were added to these six mechanisms to investigate if the extended mechanism performs better than the original one. Some of the extended mechanisms became the best performing mechanisms.

The MD17 Datasets from the Perspective of Datasets for Gas-Phase "Small" Molecule Potentials

Abstract:There has been great progress in developing methods for machine-learned potential energy surfaces. There have also been important assessments of these methods by comparing so-called learning curves on datasets of electronic energies and forces, notably the MD17 database. The dataset for each molecule in this database generally consists of tens of thousands of energies and forces obtained from DFT direct dynamics at 500 K. We contrast the datasets from this database for three "small" molecules, ethanol, malonaldehyde, and glycine, with datasets we have generated with specific targets for the PESs in mind: a rigorous calculation of the zero-point energy and wavefunction, the tunneling splitting in malonaldehyde and in the case of glycine a description of all eight low-lying conformers. We found that the MD17 datasets are too limited for these targets. We also examine recent datasets for several PESs that describe small-molecule but complex chemical reactions. Finally, we introduce a new database, "QM-22", which contains datasets of molecules ranging from 4 to 15 atoms that extend to high energies and a large span of configurations.

PubChemQC B3LYP/6-31G*//PM6 dataset: the Electronic Structures of 86 Million Molecules using B3LYP/6-31G* calculations

Abstract:This article presents the "PubChemQC B3LYP/6-31G*//PM6" dataset, containing electronic properties of 85,938,443 molecules. It includes orbitals, orbital energies, total energies, dipole moments, and other relevant properties. The dataset encompasses a wide range of molecules, from essential compounds to biomolecules up to 1000 molecular weight, covering 94.0% of the original PubChem Compound catalog (as of August 29, 2016). The electronic properties were calculated using the B3LYP/6-31G* and PM6 methods. The dataset is available in three formats: (i) GAMESS quantum chemistry program files, (ii) selected JSON output files, and (iii) a PostgreSQL database, enabling researchers to query molecular properties. Five sub-datasets offer more specific data. The first two subsets include molecules with C, H, O, and N, under 300 and 500 molecular weight respectively. The third and fourth subsets contain C, H, N, O, P, S, F, and Cl, under 300 and 500 molecular weight respectively. The fifth subset includes C, H, N, O, P, S, F, Cl, Na, K, Mg, and Ca, under 500 molecular weight. Coefficients of determination ranged from 0.892 (CHON500) to 0.803 (whole) for the HOMO-LUMO energy gap. These findings represent extensive investigations and can be utilized for drug discovery, material science, and other applications. Abstract:Thermodynamic parameters are the main components of reaction mechanisms for combustion modeling. In this work, the high-precision and efficient methods are investigated to calculate the thermodynamic data of enthalpies of formation, entropies, and heat capacities. An automatic program of thermodynamic data off-line calculator (TDOC) is developed for given reaction mechanisms to efficiently get high-accuracy thermodynamic parameters. It is found the extrapolation of connectivity-based hierarchy (CBH) method can broaden the scope of application for larger molecules to achieve high-accuracy calculations for enthalpies of formation at CCSD(T)/CBS level with bond additivity correction (BAC). Moreover, the high-precision thermodynamic data must consider the contributions of the hindered-rotor corrections and conformational contributions. Finally, the simulations of ignition delay time and species concentration are performed by substituting the high-precision thermodynamic parameters. It reveals that the high-precision thermodynamic parameters can improve the performance of reaction mechanisms, in which the simulated ignition delay time and species concentration are closer to experimental data. We hope this work can shed new light on the construction of reaction mechanisms for combustion modeling.

Abstract:The heat capacities , C p and speed of sound W of methane were calculated by a new equation of state with few adjustable constants. The equation includes a new regular part with 13 coefficients and a scale part with 6 coefficients with a regular crossover function containing two fitting parameters. The constants in the equation of state were determined using only ( p , ρ, T ) data for СH 4 ; no data on , C p , and W were employed, except for the data on isochoric heat capacity in the ideal-gas state and value of at 100 K on the liquid branch on the liquid–vapor equilibrium curve. The calculated values of , C p , and W are close to the experimental and tabulated values in the regular region. Calculations in the critical region uses universal critical indices α, β, γ according to the three-dimensional Ising model. A discrepancy with the tabulated data is caused by application of the scaling equation of state. The calculated values are compared with the predictions by the known crossover equations of state for СH 4 . The root-mean-square error in the description of СH 4 pressure is σ р = 0.5%, the mean absolute deviation is 0.3%, the uncertainty in does not exceed 5%.

An Optimized Methane Reaction Model for Oxyfuel Combustion

Abstract:Pressurized oxyfuel combustion technology is a potential solution for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by carbon capture and storage while burning hydrocarbon fuels. Numerous experiments on CH4 ignition delay times and laminar flame propagation velocities at high pressures and CO2 atmosphere dilution have been reported, contributing to the improvement of current CH4 combustion kinetic models. However, existing mainstream models produce significantly larger prediction errors for syngas ignition delay time data, especially under oxyfuel combustion conditions. Motivated by the observation, an optimized CH4 model was developed based on a comprehensive set of experimental data, including 2205 ignition delay time, 3344 laminar flame speed, and 200 species profile measurements and balanced the predicted performance of the syngas. A novel sampling strategy was developed and embedded in the optimization algorithm to improve the computational efficiency. The optimized rate constants fall reasonably within the estimated uncertainty range. Prediction performance of the optimized model was evaluated and compared to four well-established models. The optimized model showed considerably improved results, providing a better balance between the prediction of ignition delay time and laminar flame speed data. The kinetic reasons for the improved performance were examined and discussed.

Generalized Energy-Based Fragmentation Approach for Accurate Binding Energies and Raman Spectra of Methane Hydrate Clusters

Abstract:Methane hydrates (MHs) play important roles in the fields of chemistry, energy, environmental sciences, etc. In this work, we employ the generalized energy-based fragmentation (GEBF) approach to compute the binding energies and Raman spectra of various MH clusters. For the GEBF binding energies of various MH clusters, we first evaluated the various functionals of density functional theory (DFT), and compared them with the results of explicitly correlated combined coupled-cluster singles and doubles with noniterative triples corrections [CCSD(T)(F12*)] method. Our results show that the two best functionals are B3PW91-D3 and B97D, with mean absolute errors of only 0.27 and 0.47 kcal/mol, respectively. Then we employed GEBF-B3PW91-D3 to obtain the structures and Raman spectra of MH clusters with mono- and double-cages. Our results show that the B3PW91-D3 functional can well reproduce the experimental C−H stretching Raman spectra of methane in MH crystals, with errors less than 3 cm−1. As the size of the water cages increased, the C−H stretching Raman spectra exhibited a redshift, which is also in agreement with the experimental “loose cage−tight cage” model. In addition, the Raman spectra are only slightly affected by the neighboring environment (cages) of methane. The blueshifts of C−H stretching frequencies are no larger than 3 cm−1 for CH4 from monocages to doublecages. The Raman spectra of the MH clusters could be combined with the experimental Raman spectra to investigate the structures of methane hydrates in the ocean bottom or in the interior of interstellar icy bodies. Based on the B3PW91-D3 or B97D functional and machine learning models, molecular dynamics simulations could be applied to the nucleation and growth mechanisms, and the phase transitions of methane hydrates.
Accurate Study of Valence Orbitals of Methane by Electron Momentum Spectroscopy

Abstract:The electronic structure of methane has been studied in detail by the high performance energy multichannel electron momentum spectrometer developed recently. The accurate electron momentum distributions of the 1t(2) and 2a(1) valence orbitals of methane are measured. Excellent agreement can be found between the experimental data and the calculations using the Hartree-Fock method and CI method with the 146-GTO basis functions. In the inner valence region clearly satellite structures of the 2a(1) orbital are observed. The experimental binding energies and pole strengths are compared with the result of 2ph-TDA Green function's calculation. EMS measurements and the 2ph-TDA calculation can give the consistent values of binding energies, while the 2ph-TDA calculation is found to overestimate the main peak intensity of 2a(1) orbital and underestimate the intensity of satallite structures.
