Abstract:To separate Sr(II), one of the heat emitting nuclides, from high level liquid waste (HLLW), a macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6 polymeric composite, DtOct/SiO2-P, was synthesized by means of molecular modification of 4,4′,(5′)-di(tert-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuC H18C6) with a long-chain 1-octanol. It was performed by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-octanol molecules into the pores of the SiO2-P particles, the macroporous silica-based support. The adsorption of Sr(II) and some co-existent typical elements Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Ru(III), Mo(VI), Pd(II), Ba(II), La(III), and Y(III) contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) towards DtOct/SiO2-P was investigated at 323 K. The effects of contact time and the concentration of HNO3 in a range of 0.1–5.0M on the adsorption of the tested metals were examined. The macroporous silica-based DtOct/SiO2-P polymeric composite showed strong adsorption ability and high selectivity for Sr(II) over all of the tested metals except Ba(II). The optimum acidity of Sr(II) adsorption onto DtOct/SiO2-P was determined to be 2.0M HNO3. The bleeding behavior of DtOct/SiO2-P in aqueous phase was evaluated using total organic carbon (TOC) analysis. The content of TOC increased with increasing the HNO3 concentration and contact time. It resulted from the decrease in the stability of the associated species, C8H17-OH• DtBuCH18C6 formed through hydrogen binding, because of high temperature.

Abstract:To partition Sr(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW), a macroporous silica-based 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6)-tri-n-butyl phosphate (TBP) polymeric composite, (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P, was synthesized. It was done by impregnation and immobilization of DtBuCH18C6 and TBP into the pores of the SiO2-P particles, where DtBuCH18C6 was modified with TBP. The sorption of Sr(II) and some co-existent elements contained in a simulated HLW onto (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P Was investigated at 323 K. In addition, the bleeding of total organic carbon in aqueous phase was evaluated. The results demonstrated that in 2.0 M HNO3, application of the macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6 polymeric composite in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II) from the simulated HLW is feasible.
SPEC: A New Process for Strontium and Cesium Partitioning Utilizing Two Macroporous Silica-Based Supramolecular Recognition Agents Impregnated Polymeric Composites

Abstract:To effectively separate two heat generators Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a highly active liquid waste (HLW), two macroporous silica-based polymeric composites (Calix[4] arene-R14 + M)/SiO(2)-P and (DtBuCH18C6 + M)/SiO(2)-P were synthesized. It was done by impregnating and immobilizing the supramolecular recognition agent, 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptyl ethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4] arene-R14) or 4,4',(5')-di-(tert-butylcyclo hexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6), into the pores of the macroporous SiO(2)-P particles with a mean diameter of 50 mm. It was found that in the first column packed with (Calix[4] arene-R14 + M)/SiO(2)-P, all of the tested elements were effectively eluted and separated into two groups: (1) Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Rh(III), Ru(III), Pd(II), Zr(IV), RE(III) (La-Lu and Y), and Mo(VI) (Sr-containing group), and (2) Cs(I)-Rb(I) (Cs-group) by eluting with 4.0 M HNO(3) and water, respectively, at 298 K. The heat emitting element Cs(I) flowed into the second group along with Rb(I), while Sr(II) showed no sorption and flowed into the Sr-containing group. In the second column packed with (DtBuCH18C6 + M)/SiO(2)-P, the Sr-containing group was separated into (1) Na(I), K(I), Rh(III), Ru(III), RE(III) (La-Lu and Y), Pd(II), Zr(IV), and Mo(VI) (non-sorption group), and (2) Sr(II)-Ba(II) (Sr-group), by eluting with 2.0 M HNO(3) and water, respectively. The heat emitting element Sr(II) adsorbed by (DtBuCH18C6 + M)/SiO(2)-P flowed into the second group along with Ba(II). Based on the results, a new process entitled SPEC (Strontium/Cesium Partitioning from HLW by Extraction Chromatography) for heat generator partitioning from a simulated highly active liquid waste utilizing two macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition composites has been developed.

Abstract:In this study, a strontium-doped hydroxyapatite (Sr-HAP) was synthesized by the solgel method, which was used as adsorbent to remove lead ions (Pb2+) from water. The results showed that the adsorption capacities of the Sr-HAP were obviously higher than those of the HAP, the adsorption capacities of which for Pb2+ reached 651.175 mg/g. The proper increasement in the dosage of adsorbent was beneficial to the removal of Pb2+ by Sr-HAP. Meanwhile Sr-HAP had a wide applicable pH range for Pb2+. And the increasement in temperature could increase the adsorption capacity of Sr-HAP for Pb2+ to a certain extent. The Langmuir model was used to fit the isotherm adsorption process of Sr-HAP to Pb2+ in water. Compared with HAP, the specific surface area of Sr-HAP has increased by 11.1%, and the pore size distribution of Sr-HAP tended to be smaller and more uniform. Hence, Sr-HAP could be used as an ideal adsorbent to remove Pb2+ in wastewater.

Abstract:A macroporous silica-based 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DtBuCH18C6)-imprepated polymeric composite, (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P, was synthesized by molecular modification of DtBuCH18C6 with I-octanol through hydrogen bonding. This was achieved by impregnating and immobilizing DtBuCH18C6 and 1-octanol molecules in the pores of macroporous SiO(2)-P particles possessing a mean pore diameter of 50 pill. The adsorption of some fission and non-fission products contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) such as Ru(III), Mo(VI), Pd(II), Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), La(III) and Y(III) onto (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P was investigated at 298 K. The effects of contact time and HNO(3) concentration within the range 0.1-5.0 M were examined. Increasing the HNO(3) concentration from 0.1 M to 2.0 M led to a significant increase in the adsorption of Sr(II), followed by a decrease when the HNO(3) concentration yeas increased further to 5.0 M. The optimum concentration of HNO(3) in the adsorption of Sr(11) onto (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P was determined as 2.0 M. For the other ions examined with the exception of Ba(II), very weak or almost non-existent adsorption capacities were observed at all HNO(3) concentrations. The leaching of total organic carbon (TOC) from (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2)-P into the aqueous phase was evaluated. Over the HNO3 concentration range 0.1-3.0 M, the quantity of TOC leached was ca. 40 ppm compared with 355.8-373.3 ppm at HNO(3) concentrations above 4.0 M. Significant reduction of TOC leaching from the macroporous silica-based DtBuCH18C6-impregnated polymeric composite was achieved in 2.0 M HNO3. Such behaviour could be of great benefit in using (DtBuCH18C6 + Oct)/SiO(2),-P for the partitioning of Sr(II) from HLW by extraction chromatography.

Abstract:Based on the intermolecular modification of 1,3-[(2,4-diethylheptylethoxy)oxy]-2,4-crown-6-calix[4] arene (Calix[4]) with 4,4',(5')-di(t-butylcyclohexano)-18-crown-6 (DBC), a hybridized macroporous silica-based supramolecular recognition material, Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P, was prepared. The agents were impregnated and immobilized into the pores of the SiO2-P particles support. The adsorption of Cs(I), Sr(II), and some typical coexistent metals onto Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P was investigated. The influence of contact time and HNO3 concentration in the range of 0.4-6.0 M was studied. Calix[4]@DBC/SiO2-P exhibited high adsorption ability and selectivity for Sr(II) and Cs(I) except for Rb(I) and BA(II). The simultaneous partitioning of Cs(I) and Sr(II) from a simulated highly active liquid waste was performed by Calix[4]@DBC/ SiO2-P packed column. They were effectively eluted with water and flowed into effluent along with Rb(I) and Ba(II), while others showed no adverse impact. Chromatographic Separation of Strontium (II) from a Nitric Acid Solution Containing Some Typically Simulated Elements by a Novel Silica‐Based TODGA Impregnated Polymeric Composite in the MAREC Process

Abstract:A new kind of macroporous silica-based N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyl-3-oxapentane-1,5-diamide (TODGA) chelating polymeric adsorption material (TODGA/SiO2-P) was developed and synthesized by impregnating TODGA molecules into the pores of similar to 50 mu m SiO2-P particles to separate strontium effectively from high-level liquid waste (HLLW). The adsorption of some typically simulated elements Na(I), K(I), Cs(I), Rb(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), and Ru(III) towards TODGA/SiO2-P adsorbent was investigated by examining the influence of contact time and HNO3 concentration. It was found that with an increase in the HNO3 concentration, the adsorption of Sr(H) onto TODGA/SiO2-P adsorbent increased quickly from 0.5 M to 2.0 HNO3 and then decreased. TODGA/SiO2-P exhibited excellent adsorption ability and selectivity for Sr(II) over all of the tested elements, which showed almost no adsorption. Based on the batch experiments, the separation of Sr(II) from a 2.0 M HNO3 solution containing similar to 5 x 10(-3) M of the simulated elements was performed by TODGA/SiO2-P packed column at 25 degrees C and 50 degrees C, respectively. Cs(I), K(I), Ru(III), Ba(III), Rb(I), and Na(I) were found to facilely elute out column and flow into effluent along with feed solution and 2.0 M HNO3 because of no adsorption. Sr(II) adsorbed towards TODGA/SiO2-P was desorbed sufficiently by distilled water and separated completely from the simulated elements. Its recovery percentage was 100.2% at 25 degrees C and 99.7% at 50 degrees C. Furthermore, the leakage behavior of TODGA from its silica-based adsorbent was investigated. It was found that the quantity of TODGA leaked was basically equivalent to its solubility in the corresponding HNO3 solution.

Pd(II), Mo(VI), Y(III), La(III), Ru(III), K(I), Cs(I), and Na(I) showed no adsorption and flowed into effluent along with 2.0 M HNO3. Sr(II) was retained on (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P and was eluted effectively by H2O, while Ba(II) showed similar elution behavior. The bleeding of total organic carbon leaked from (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P was evaluated. It was demonstrated that the macroporous silica-based (DtBuCH18C6+Oct)/SiO2-P materials are promising in separation of Sr(II) from high level radioactive waste.
Cesium and Strontium Uptake Utilizing a New Ternary Solid-State Supramolecular Adsorbent under a Framework of Group Partitioning

Abstract:To simultaneously remove Sr and Cs from a simulated highly active liquid waste, a new ternary solid-state supramolecular adsorbent BnPC6DTXAD-7 (BnPDTX7), based on organic chelating agents 25,27-bis(1-n-propoxy)-calix[4]26,28-crown-6 (BnPC6), 4,4'(5')-di-tert-butyldicyclohexano-18-crown-6 (DT), and polymeric carrier XAD-7 was prepared for the first time. Scanning electronic microscopy and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis demonstrated that BnPDTX7 is a macroporous adsorbent. The adsorption of 20 metals onto BnPDTX7 were studied. Under the optimal adsorption conditions of 3.0 M HNO3, 298 K, and contact time of 60 min, the adsorption capacity toward Cs and Sr were 0.1396 mM/g and 0.1289 mM/g, respectively. The experimental data fit well with the Langmuir model, indicative of the monolayer adsorption mechanism. The thermodynamic parameters, Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees of Cs and Sr adsorption and other valuable chemical engineering data were obtained. BnPDTX7 proves to be a promising adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of Sr and Cs because of its high selectivity, fast kinetics, and high stability.

The adsorption of a few typical simulated fission and non-fission products Pd(II), La(III), Na(I), K(I), Sr(II), Ba(II), Ru(III), Cs(I), Mo(VI), and Y(III) onto (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P was investigated at 323K. It was done by examining the effect of contact time and the HNO3 concentration in a range of 0.1-5.0M. Sr(II), one of the main heat emitting nuclides, showed optimum adsorption onto (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P in 2.0 HNO3, while others showed very weak or almost no adsorption except a portion of Ba(II). The leaching of TBP and DtBuCH18C6 from (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P was evaluated. The average content of DtBuCH18C6, 298.7ppm, leached from (DtBuCH18C6+TBP)/SiO2-P in 2.0M HNO3 at 323K was obviously lower than that of 797.3ppm leached from DtBuCH18C6/SiO2-P at 298K. The significant reduction of DtBuCH18C6 leaching from its macroporous silica-based polymeric adsorbent was achieved. It is useful for the recycle operation of the silica-based DtBuCH18C6 impregnated polymeric composite in chromatographic partitioning of Sr(II) from high level liquid waste (HLLW).
Calcium-Intercalated Zirconium Phosphate by Granulation: A Strategy for Enhancing Adsorption Selectivity of Strontium and Cesium from Liquid Radioactive Waste.

Abstract:The capture of the radionuclides strontium and cesium is of great importance to the environment, human health, and the sustainable development of nuclear energy, and zirconium phosphate with excellent ion exchange capacity has potential application in this field. In this work, we organically granulated zirconium phosphate to induce the formation of composite bead materials (CA@ZrP) with a calcium-containing phase with selectivity for Sr2+ and Cs+ higher than that of pure ZrP in low-pH environments and competing ionic environments. The adsorption performance of the material was systematically investigated. It was concluded that the adsorption performance of CA@ZrP improved with an increase in temperature, and under the dynamic adsorption experimental conditions, the treatment capacity of CA@ZrP for Sr2+ and Cs+ reached 404.79 and 302.2 bed volumes, respectively. The systematic study and characterization showed that the generation of the calcium-containing phase [Ca0.55ZrH0.9(PO4)2] promoted the exchange of Ca2+ with Sr2+ and Cs+, thus improving the selectivity of the composite beads. The highly selective composite bead material can be prepared in batches and easily recycled, providing a new idea for practical engineering applications.
Hydrothermal Removal of Sr2+ in Aqueous Solution Via Formation of Sr-substituted Hydroxyapatite.

Abstract:We removed Sr2+ in simulating wastewater and simultaneously prepared Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite via chemical precipitation and hydrothermal treatment. Both higher initial pH value and higher molar ratio of Sr/(Sr+Ca) contributed to lower residual Sr2+ concentration and higher removal efficiency. About two thirds of Sr2+ residual in solution after chemical precipitation were further reduced by hydrothermal treatment. The optimal Sr removal result was 99.66% with an ultimate concentration of 2.0mgL−1 when the initial pH was 12 and Sr/(Sr+Ca) was 0.2. Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite phase with hexagonal structure was identified by XRD and EDS results. However, it was found that SrHPO4 phase was formed in the samples with high Sr composition. The lattice constants became larger with the increase of Sr2+ and the crystallinity became higher with the increase of pH value. Rod-like particles were observed in SEM images of synthesized Sr-substituted hydroxyapatite samples, with the size of 20–30nm in width and 70–100nm in length. With little secondary waste and simple treating procedure, this method is an effective and prospective measure to deal with 90Sr in nuclear waste and industry wastewater.

Abstract:Selective uptake and elution of trace amounts of hazardous radioactive 90Sr from large-scale high-level liquid waste (HLW) is crucial for sustainable development. Here, we propose a site differentiation strategy, based on the presence of distinct selective metal capture sites (concavity site and tweezer site) within the giant polyoxoniobate (PONb) nanoclusters of an all-inorganic PONb framework (FZU-1). Through this strategy, FZU-1 can not only effectively remove 98.9% of Sr²⁺ from simulated nuclear liquid waste, performing best among the reported Sr adsorbents, but also achieve desorption of adsorbed Sr²⁺ ions by selectively loading Na⁺ ions, thus enabling the recycling of FZU-1. Based on the well-defined single-crystal structures and theoretical studies, it can be revealed that the rapid and selective uptake of Sr²⁺ is attributed to the strong binding energy between the Sr²⁺ ions and the concavity sites. The effective elution of Sr²⁺, on the other hand, stems from the preferential binding of Na⁺ ions at the tweezer sites, elevating the cluster's electrostatic potential and indirectly facilitating the elution of Sr²⁺ ions. The exceptional stability of FZU-1, along with its rapid and selective Sr²⁺ capture and elution capabilities, positions it as a promising candidate for large-scale nuclear waste treatment and groundwater remediation applications.

Abstract:Selective removal of heavy metals from water has been of considerable concern for several decades. In the present study, the amorphous zirconium phosphate (ZrP) was synthesized and characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron micrography (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) as well as pH-titration experiments. Uptake of heavy metals including lead, cadmium, and zinc onto ZrP was studied by using a polystyrene sulfonic-acid exchanger D-001 as a reference sorbent and Ca2+ as a competing cation due to its ubiquity in natural or industrial waters. The results indicated that the uptake of heavy metals onto ZrP is essentially an ion-exchange process and dependent upon solution pH. In comparison with D-001, ZrP exhibited more favorable sorption of heavy metals particularly in terms of high selectivity, as indicated by the distribution coefficients of ZrP even several orders higher than D-001 towards heavy metals when calcium ion coexisted at a high level in solution. The Fourier transform-infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopic investigation indicated that the uptake of calcium, cadmium, and zinc ions onto ZrP is only driven by the electrostatic interaction, while that of lead ion is possibly dependent upon the inner-sphere complex formation with ZrP. XPS results further elucidated that ZrP displays different sorption affinity towards heavy metals in the same order as selectivity sequence of Pb2+>Zn2+≈Cd2+>Ca2+, which can be explained by hard and soft acids and bases (HASB) theory. Moreover, uptake of heavy metals onto ZrP approached to equilibrium quickly and the used ZrP could be readily regenerated for reuse by the dilute HCl solution. Thus, all the results suggest that amorphous ZrP has excellent potential as a sorption material for water treatment.

Abstract:The present study reported synthesis of a new inorganic exchanger, i.e., zirconium hydrogen monothiophosphate [Zr(HPO3S)2, denoted ZrPS] and its selective sorption toward Pb(II), Cd(II) and Zn(II) ions. ZrPS sorption toward all the three metals is dependent upon solution pH due to the ion-exchange nature. As compared to another inorganic exchanger zirconium phosphate [Zr(HPO4)2, denoted ZrP], ZrPS exhibits highly selective sorption toward these toxic metals from the background of calcium ions at great levels. Such sorption preference is mainly attributed to the presence of –SH group in ZrPS, as further demonstrated by FT-IR analysis and XPS study. Moreover, ZrPS particles preloaded with heavy metals could be efficiently regenerated with 6M HCl for multiple use without any noticeable capacity loss. All the experimental results indicated that ZrPS is a promising sorbent for enhanced heavy metals removal from contaminated water.

Abstract:The development of high-efficiency adsorbents for heavy metal ion removal from wastewater is highly desirable and challenging due to their synthesis complexity and low adsorption capacities. Herein, we reported the synthesis of strontium (Sr) doped hydroxyapatite (HAp) for the increased Cr (VI) adsorption. The effects of pH, temperature, and time on adsorption performances were studied. As a result, the Sr-HAp nanorods can achieve a Cr (VI) adsorption capacity of 443 mg/g, which is significantly higher than that of HAp nanorods (318 mg/g). To better understand the adsorption mechanism, the Langmuir isotherm model was established. The modeling results indicated that Langmuir monolayer chemical adsorption contributed to the efficient Cr (VI) ion removal for Sr-HAp nanorods adsorbents. The surface area and surface functional groups (O–H) contributed to the different Cr (VI) adsorption capacities between HAp and Sr-HAp.

Abstract:In the present study, polymer-supported zirconium phosphate (ZrP-CP) was prepared for selective removal of lead from the contaminated water. ZrP-CP was characterized using nitrogen adsorption technique, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Lead sorption on ZrP-CP was found to be pH dependent due to the ion- exchange mechanism. Also, ZrP-CP was proved to be more selective than the polystyrene strong-acid cation exchanger D-001 to remove lead ion from water, where other competing cations such as Na(+), Ca(2+), and Mg(2+) ions coexist at high concentrations. Generally, lead sorption isotherms on ZrP-CP can be divided into two distinct regions at different load levels, and isotherms at both regions can be well elucidated by Langmuir model. The distribution coefficients (K(d)) and binding constants (B(L)) obtained experimentally indicated that stronger sorption affinity of ZrP-CP towards the lead ion occurs at a relatively lower load level. Also, lead sorption onto ZrP-CP was found to be an endothermic and entropy-driven process. High selectivity of ZrP-CP towards the lead ion was possibly attributed to the crystal state of zirconium phosphate and a specific interaction between orthophosphate and lead ion. Fixed-bed column runs showed that lead sorption on ZrP-CP could result in a conspicuous decrease of this toxic metal from 0.5 mg/L to below 0.01 mg/L, which is recommended as the standard of drinking water by WHO (the treatment technique standard set by US EPA is 0.015 mg/L). Also, the spent sorbent can be readily regenerated for reuse by dilute HNO(3) or HCl solution.

Abstract:The efficient segregation of radioactive nuclides from low-level radioactive liquid waste (LLRW) is paramount for nuclear emergency protocols and waste minimization. Here, we synthesized Na3FePO4CO3 (NFPC) via a one-pot hydrothermal method and applied it for the first time to the selective separation of Sr2+ from simulated LLRW. Static adsorption experimental results indicated that the distribution coefficient Kd remained above 5000 mL·g−1, even when the concentration of interfering ions was more than 40 times that of Sr2+. Furthermore, the removal efficiency of Sr2+ showed no significant change within the pH range of 4 to 9. The adsorption of Sr2+ fitted the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm model, with an equilibrium time of 36 min and a maximum adsorption capacity of 99.6 mg·g−1. Notably, the adsorption capacity was observed to increment marginally with an elevation in temperature. Characterization analyses and density functional theory (DFT) calculations elucidated the adsorption mechanism, demonstrating that Sr2+ initially engaged in an ion exchange reaction with Na+. Subsequently, Sr2+ coordinated with four oxygen atoms on the NFPC (100) facet, establishing a robust Sr-O bond via orbital hybridization.
