Abstract:Mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) have emerged as a subject of increasing interest. However, challenges persist regarding surface defects caused by the compatibility and dispersion of nanofillers within the polymer matrix. In this work, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) particles were synthesized in-situ within polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes via an oil-water interface. The simultaneous formation of ZIF-8 particles and crosslinking of PDMS at the liquid-liquid interface led to the generation smaller ZIF-8 particle sizes, improved compatibility and the formation of a coverage PDMS layer on the ZIF-8 particles. Optical microscopy and SEM analyses showed the formation of ZIF-8 particles predominantly occurred at the oil-water interface and covered by a PDMS layer on the top, with a particle average diameter of 130 nm. TEM presented the compatibility of the in-situ growth ZIF-8 in PDMS matrix. Moreover, TEM and low-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (LF-NMR) were employed to provide evidence of the compatibility between the in-situ grown ZIF-8 particles and PDMS, thereby facilitating the crosslinking of PDMS. The in-situ growth of ZIF-8/PDMS at the oil-water interface performed a high flux of 2.6 kg·m-2·h-1 and a separation factor of 13.1 for the recovery of a 5 wt.% ethanol/water solution via pervaporation (PV). The PV performance could be well tuned by the controlling of precursor proportion in the oil and water phase. Importantly, the ZIF-8/PDMS membrane with the PDMS layer covered on the top surface could prevent the ZIF-8 particles the contacting with feed liquid and particle losing during PV operation, maintaining superior pervaporation performance for over 100 hours.
