Abstract:Pseudocapacitance shows emerging properties to achieve both high capacity and high-rate performance simultaneously, including lithium ion and sodium ion storage systems. Herein, this work investigated the insightful mechanisms of pseudocapacitive lithium ion and sodium ion storage of anatase titanium dioxide anode. A transient two-dimensional continuum electrochemical modeling was performed for electrodes consisting of a single TiO 2 nanoparticle immersed in the electrolyte. The process of intrinsic surface-redox pseudocapacitance showed a uniform ion concentration across the electrochemical-active amorphous layer without hysteresis. By contrast, typical hysteresis and concentration gradients in the electrode were observed in the process of extrinsic intercalation pseudocapacitance, which enlarged with the increase in nanoparticle size or scan rate. The results indicated that sodium ion storage in TiO 2 was a surface-redox pseudocapacitive reaction. Design guidelines for sodium ion storage in TiO 2 electrodes was proposed by dimensional analysis. The dimensionless capacity for sodium ion storage remained nearly constant when the dimensionless scan rate was less than a critical value. This provided the guidance for the design and synthesis of the TiO 2 electrode to enhance sodium ion storage by balancing nanoparticle size, thickness of Na x TiO 2 surface layer, and effective diffusion coefficient of the electrode. Furthermore, such surface-redox pseudocapacitive sodium ion storage model could be extended to analyze other electrode materials.

Confined Seeds Derived Sodium Titanate/graphene Composite with Synergistic Storage Ability Toward High Performance Sodium Ion Capacitors

Abstract:Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) are increasingly being focused, due to the feature of high energy/power densities derived from the integrated energy storage mechanisms, as well as the ubiquitous sodium sources. Practical anodes with exceptional rate capability can circumvent the kinetic mismatch with cathode, boosting energy/power metrics. Herein, a Na2Ti7O15 nanowire/graphene anode is synthesized through an atomic layer deposition (ALD) seeding technique, by which the confined seeds enable Na2Ti7O15 with ultra-high aspect ratio and interweaved structure with graphene nanosheets. The composite delivers a superior rate capability of 60 mAh g(-1) at a high rate of 17.7 A g(-1), and an exceptional cyclic stability of 90% retention after 10 000 cycles even at 8.85 A g(-1). It is demonstrated that the morphology, graphene platform, intrinsically low energy diffusion barrier of Na2Ti7O15, and associated reaction mechanism synergize the electron transport, sodium ion migration, and surface capacitive contribution, giving rise to such a decent electrochemical performance. The SICs deliver high energy/power densities (82.7 Wh kg(-1)/97.5 W kg(-1), 25 kW kg(-1) with 16 Wh kg(-1) retained), proving a promise particularly at extremely fast charge/discharge condition. The proposed ALD seeding technique can be developed into a technical strategy for synthesizing high performance energy storage materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal (TM) compound nanomaterials have been widely investigated for electrochemical capacitor due to their high-surface-area and large potential of providing pseudocapacitance. Very recently, a new family of 2D materials called MXenes were synthesized and have been considered as one of the most promising pseudocapacitor electrode materials with respect to both power density and energy density. In this work, we employ first-principles calculations to study the electronic structures and redox potential and diffusion of Li on Ti2C monolayer, a representative MXene, based on density functional theory (DFT). The electronic structures indicate a significant redox pseudocapacitance characteristics as an anode with the redox potential at about 0.25 V and 0.75 V refer to the standard hydrogen electrode. Moreover, the calculated metallic behavior and low Li ions diffusion barriers suggest that Ti2C monolayer would manifest a low resistance in charging/discharging process. Our findings provide an evidence that the Ti2C monolayer is a promising electrochemical capacitor electrode material. Figure a shows the crystal structure of Ti2C monolayer in the top view and side view. The Ti and C are revealed by yellow and blue spheres, respectively. On the top view, the lighter yellow spheres consist of the first layer with the third layer formed by dim ones. Relative dispositions of PDOS and Integral DOS of d-orbitals of Ti atoms in Ti2C monolayers are shown in Figure b both on the vacuum scale and with respect to the SHE reference. Abstract:Ti-based compounds are considered as attractive anode materials for sodium-ion capacitors (SICs) due to their favorable safety and stability. However, achieving more Na+ intercalated sites and fast sodiation kinetics in Ti-based anodes is still challenging. Herein, a facile strategy to promote the electrochemical properties of H-titanates by regulating their electronic structure and Na+ diffusion kinetics through thermal-induced interlayer defect engineering is developed. The targeted distorted quasi-layered H-titanate (Q-LT) with abundant interlayer defects exhibits superfast and stable cycle performance (97% capacity retention after 10,000 cycles at 25 C) in Na-ion half-cells. Applied in the high-working voltage (1.5-4.5 V) SICs as additive anodes, high energy density (124 Wh kg(-1)) and competitive cycle stability (88% capacity retained after 5000 fast cycles) are achieved. The thermal-induced structure evolution in layered H-titanate has been probed by in-situ X-ray diffraction. First-principles density functional theory calculations demonstrate that the Q-LT is equipped with lower coordinate Ti-O polyhedral, higher delocalized Ti-O environment, narrowed band gap and reduced Na+ migration energies; bond valence sum maps expose the continuous Na+ diffusion pathways within the interlayer of Q-LT. This work may offer a conceptual advance in the understanding of the structure-function-performance relationship of fitanates for energy storage.

Abstract:Nowadays, MXenes have received extensive concern as a prominent electrode material of electrochemical capacitors. As two important factors to the capacitance, the influence of the intrinsical terminations (F, O and OH) and coordination atoms (C and N) is investigated using first-principles calculations. According to the density of states aligned with the standard hydrogen electrode, it turns out that a Ti3CNO2 monolayer is proven to show an obvious pseudocapacitive behavior, while the bare, F and OH terminated Ti3CN monolayers may only present electrochemical double layer characters in an aqueous electrolyte. Moreover, the illustration of molecular orbitals over the Fermi level are mainly contributed by the d-orbitals of Ti atoms coordinated with O and N atoms, indicating that the redox pseudocapacitance of the Ti3CNO2 monolayer is promoted by the coordination N atoms. Then the superiority of N bonded Ti atoms in accepting charges can be visualized through the charge population. Further, the larger ratio of C/N in the coordination environment of Ti atoms indicates that more electrons can be stored. Our investigation can give an instructional advice in the MXenes-electrode production.

Abstract:Pseudocapacitors, which can store more energy at high charge/discharge rates, have attracted considerable attention. The performance of a pseudocapacitive material mainly depends on the interaction between electrode materials and the electrolyte ions. However, the understanding of the interaction is still limited. Here, the performance of Ti2CT2 (T = O, F, and OH) nanosheets as pseudocapacitor electrode materials has been investigated through a novel first-principles approach. The results suggest that O-terminated Ti2C nanosheets are shown to be pseudocapacitive cathode materials. The pseudocapacitance is attributed to the large intrinsic capacitance of Ti2CO2 nanosheets and contact adsorbed cations. The former mainly decides the capacity of charges and the latter reduces the change of potential in the electrode. The integral capacitance and Na-ion capacity of Ti2CO2 nanosheets are simulated to be 291.5 F g(-1) with a broad potential window range from 0 to 2.80 V (versus Na/Na+). Low diffusion energy barriers on Ti2CO2 and Ti2CF2 nanosheets indicate fast transportation and high charge and discharge rate for Na-ions. Our results provide insight into the origin of pseudocapacitance on stacked two-dimensional materials.
Enhanced Pseudo-Capacitive Contributions to High-Performance Sodium Storage in TiO2/C Nanofibers via Double Effects of Sulfur Modification

Abstract:Abstract Pseudo-capacitive mechanisms can provide higher energy densities than electrical double-layer capacitors while being faster than bulk storage mechanisms. Usually, they suffer from low intrinsic electronic and ion conductivities of the active materials. Here, taking advantage of the combination of TiS 2 decoration, sulfur doping, and a nanometer-sized structure, as-spun TiO 2 /C nanofiber composites are developed that enable rapid transport of sodium ions and electrons, and exhibit enhanced pseudo-capacitively dominated capacities. At a scan rate of 0.5 mV s −1 , a high pseudo-capacitive contribution (76% of the total storage) is obtained for the S-doped TiS 2 /TiO 2 /C electrode (termed as TiS 2 /S-TiO 2 /C). Such enhanced pseudo-capacitive activity allows rapid chemical kinetics and significantly improves the high-rate sodium storage performance of TiO 2 . The TiS 2 /S-TiO 2 /C composite electrode delivers a high capacity of 114 mAh g −1 at a current density of 5000 mA g −1 . The capacity maintains at high level (161 mAh g −1 ) even after 1500 cycles and is still characterized by 58 mAh g −1 at the extreme condition of 10,000 mA g −1 after 10,000 cycles.

Abstract:Transition metal oxides with small grain sizes are promising candidates for capacitive charge storage. However, the overall performance of such oxide materials is still limited by low tap density and finite conductivity. Here, we present a type of densely packed titanium dioxide (TiO2) 2 ) composite that comprises three-dimensional aligned mesoporous TiO2 2 microspheres and coated ultrathin mesoporous carbon shells. The fabricated mesoporous meso-TiO2@meso-C 2 @meso-C complex possesses a highly accessible surface area (134 m2 2 g-1),- 1 ), dual mesopore channels (11.8 and 21.6 nm), and a much higher tap density (1.52 g cm- 3 ). As expected, this designed mesoporous composite achieves superior electrochemical performance, including both a maximized specific capacity of 255 mAh g-1- 1 and a volumetric capacity of 390 mAh cm- 3 at 0.025 A g-1.- 1 . Our mesoscopic composite electrode that enables fast redox reaction reveals the importance of incorporating conductive and dense mesostructures as an alternative pathway for high-volumetric pseudocapacitive materials.

Abstract:Developing pseudocapacitive materials for electrochemical energy storage generally relies on the formation of nanosize and/or nanoporous particles with short solid‐state diffusion distance and high surface area, which leads to low volumetric capacity and severe parasitic reactions. In this work, nonporous bulky heterogeneous particles composed of TiO2 matrix and phosphorus are reported for high volumetric pseudocapacitive Na storage. An in situ formed 3D titanium phosphate interphase serves as a fast ionic transport network, allowing rapid sodiation/desodiation processes within the particles. Such nonporous heterogeneous particles exhibit "interface‐induced pseudocapacitance" with an enhanced volumetric capacity, which is over 50% higher than that of commercial hard carbon anodes. This study demonstrates heterogeneous particles with a well‐engineered nanostructure as a new paradigm for electrode materials design.

Abstract:Sodium-ion capacitors can potentially combine the virtues of high power capability of conventional electrochemical capacitors and high energy density of batteries. However, the lack of high-performance electrode materials has been the major challenge of sodium-based energy storage devices. In this work, we report a microwave-assisted synthesis of single-crystal-like anatase TiO2 mesocages anchored on graphene as a sodium storage material. The architecture of the nanocomposite results in pseudocapacitive charge storage behavior with fast kinetics, high reversibility, and negligible degradation to the micro/nanostructure. The nanocomposite delivers a high capacity of 268 mAh g(-1) at 0.2 degrees C, which remains 126 mAh g(-1) at 10 C for over 18 000 cycles. Coupling with a carbon-based cathode, a full cell of sodium-ion capacitor successfully demonstrates a high energy density of 64.2 Wh kg(-1) at 56.3 W kg(-1) and 25.8 Wh kg(-1) at 1357 W kg(-1), as well as an ultralong lifespan of 10 000 cycles with over 90% of capacity retention.
Tunable Pseudocapacitance Storage of MXene by Cation Pillaring for High Performance Sodium-Ion Capacitors

Abstract:2D transition metal carbide materials called MXene have attracted significant interest in the field of electrochemical energy storage due to their high electrical conductivity and high volumetric capacity. However, the low capacity accompanied by sluggish sodiation kinetics of electrodes made from multi-layer MXene has limited their further application for sodium ion storage. The key challenge to overcome the abovementioned issue is to decrease the Na+ diffusion barrier and increase the active site concentration in MXene electrodes used for Na+ storage. In this study, a method to significantly improve the capacity and kinetics of Ti3C2 MXene for Na+ storage using facile alkali metal ion pillaring is reported. After Na+ pillaring, the MXene sheets (Na–Ti3C2) with incremental interlayer spacing exhibit a high reversible capacity of 175 mA h g−1 (∼170% of the original value) at 0.1 A g−1 and an excellent outstanding cycling stability for 2000 cycles at 2.0 A g−1 for sodium ion storage. By combining ex situ XPS with kinetics analysis, the increased number of active sites and lower Na+ diffusion barrier were confirmed after Na+ pillaring when compared with the cases of Ti3C2, Li–Ti3C2, and K–Ti3C2. The role of the terminal groups (–OH) in Na–Ti3C2 has also been confirmed by analysis of the electrochemical performance of the annealed Na–Ti3C2 samples (450 °C and 700 °C). The results show that the existence of –OH groups in Na–Ti3C2 can increase the number of Na+ storage active sites, but decrease the kinetics. By coupling the Na–Ti3C2 anode with an AC cathode, the assembled SIC device delivers a high energy density of 80.2 W h kg−1 and high power density (6172 W kg−1) with an ultra-long and stable cycling performance (capacity retention: ∼78.4 at 2 A g−1 after 15 000 cycles).
T-Nb2O5 Nanoparticle Enabled Pseudocapacitance with Fast Li-ion Intercalation.

Abstract:Orthorhombic Nb2O5 (T-Nb2O5) nanocrystallites are successfully fabricated through an evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method guided by a commercialised triblock copolymer - Pluronic F127. We demonstrate a morphology transition of T-Nb2O5 from continuous porous nanofilms to monodisperse nanoparticles by changing the content of Pluronic F127. The electrochemical results show that the optimized monodisperse Nb-2 with a particle size of 20 nm achieves premier Li-ion intercalation kinetics and higher rate capability than mesoporous T-Nb2O5 nanofilms. Nb-2 presents an initial intercalation capacity of 528 and 451 C g-1 at current densities of 0.5 and 5 A g-1 and exhibited a stable capacity of 499 C g-1 after 300 charge/discharge cycles and 380 C g-1 after 1000 cycles, respectively. We would expect this copolymer guided monodispersion of T-Nb2O5 nanoparticles with high Li+ intercalation performance to open up a new window for novel EES technologies.
Size-Independent Fast Ion Intercalation in Two-Dimensional Titania Nanosheets.

Abstract:Compared to lithium ions, the fast redox intercalation of large-radius sodium or potassium ions into a solid lattice in non-aqueous electrolytes is an elusive goal. Herein, by regulating the interlayer structure of stacked titania sheets through weakened layer-to-layer interactions and a robustly pillared gallery space, the two-dimensional channel between neighboring sheets was completely open to guest intercalation, allowing fast intercalation that was practically irrespective of the carrier-ion sizes. Regardless of employing regular Li or large-radius Na and K ions, the material manifested zero strain-like behavior with no significant change in both host structure and interlayer space, enabling comparable capacities for all tested ions along with excellent rate behaviors and extraordinarily long lifetimes, even with 80-mu m-thick electrodes. The result highlights the importance of interlayer structural features for unlocking the electrochemical activity of a layered material.

Abstract:Sodium ion capacitors (SICs) are designed to deliver both high energy and power densities at low cost. Electric double-layer capacitive cathodes are typically used in these devices, but they lead to very limited capacity. Herein, we apply a pseudocapacitive layered ferric vanadate (Fe-V-O) as cathode to construct non-aqueous SICs with both high energy and power densities. The Fe-V-O nanosheets cathode displays remarkable rate capability and cycling stability. The pseudocapacitive sodium storage mechanism of Fe-V-O, with over 83% of total capacity from capacitive contribution, is confirmed by kinetics analysis and ex situ characterizations. The capacitive-adsorption mechanism of hard carbon (HC) anode is demonstrated, and it delivers excellent rate capability. Based on as-synthesized materials, the assembled HC//Fe-V-O SIC delivers a maximum energy density of 194 Wh kg-1 and power density of 3,942 W kg-1. Our work highlights the advantages of pseudocapacitive cathodes for achieving both high energy and power densities in sodium storage devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) heterostructures endowed with mesoporosities offer exciting opportunities in electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, energy storage, and conversion technologies due to their integrated functionalities, abundant active sites and shortened diffusion distance. However, layered mesostructures have not been combined due to the immense difficulties by conventional chemical, mechanical exfoliation or self-assembly approaches. Herein, we explore a bottom-up strategy, carried out under mild conditions, for the facile synthesis of monolayered mesoporous-titania-mesoporous-carbon vertical heterostructure with uniform mesopore size, which enables ultrahigh rate capability and cycling longevity for pseudocapacitive sodium-ion storage in nonaqueous electrolyte. Such a brand-new type of heterostructure consists of well-ordered monolayered mesoporous titania nanosheets and surrounding two mesoporous carbon monolayers assembled at both sides. Remarkably, the combination of interconnected large mesoporosity and heterointerface leads to highly promoted reversible pseudocapacitance (96.4% of total charge storage at a sweep rate of 1 mV s-1), and it enables the material to retain strong mechanical stability during the rapid sodiation and desodiation processes. This study reveals the importance of incorporating mesopores into heterointerface as a strategy for enhancing charge storage kinetics of electroactive materials.
Oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2-coated carbon nanofibers for fast sodium storage in high-performance sodium-ion hybrid capacitors

Abstract:Sodium-ion hybrid capacitors (SIHCs) are an emerging energy storage device with various potential applications due to their combined merits of batteries and supercapacitors. However, this device still suffers from the slow kinetics of the anode, which severely restricts the rate performance. Herein, we demonstrate that the rate performance of a carbon-nanofiber-based anode can be remarkably enhanced by coating a thin layer of oxygen-vacancy-rich TiO2. The as-prepared material (TiO2@PBC) is used as an anode in a sodium-ion battery, which delivers a reversible capacity of 180.2 mA h g−1 at 10 A g−1 with a capacity retention of 110.7% after 20,000 cycles, outperforming those without TiO2 coating. Furthermore, the TiO2@PBC is assembled into a SIHC with activated carbon as the cathode, which shows an energy density of 91.0 W h kg−1 at a power density of 165 W kg−1 and retaining an energy density of 43.4 W h kg−1 at an ultra-high power density of 13 kW kg−1. The excellent sodium storage performance of TiO2@PBC is attributed to the three-dimensionally cross-linked conductive network, the open ion-transportation channels, and more importantly, the TiO2 coating with high content of oxygen vacancies which expands the lattice and thus enables fast ion transport.

Abstract:Abstract Sodium-ion storage technologies are promising candidates for large-scale grid systems owing to the abundance and low cost of sodium. However, compared to well-understood lithium-ion storage mechanisms, sodium-ion storage remains relatively unexplored. Herein, we systematically determine the sodium-ion storage properties of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2(A)). During the initial sodiation process, a thin surface layer (~3 to 5 nm) of crystalline TiO2(A) becomes amorphous but still undergoes Ti4+/Ti3+ redox reactions. A model explaining the role of the amorphous layer and the dependence of the specific capacity on the size of TiO2(A) nanoparticles is proposed. Amorphous nanoparticles of ~10 nm seem to be optimum in terms of achieving high specific capacity, on the order of 200 mAh g-1, at high charge/discharge rates. Kinetic studies of TiO2(A) nanoparticles indicate that sodium-ion storage is due to a surface-redox, capacitor-like reaction mechanism that is not dependent on nanoparticle size in contrast to the lithiation of TiO2(A) which is a diffusion-limited intercalation process. The surface-redox properties of TiO2(A) result in excellent rate capability, cycling stability and low overpotentials. Moreover, the surface-redox mechanism is instrumental in enabling thick electrodes of TiO2(A) retain high rate properties, and represent a promising direction for high-power sodium-ion storage.
