Abstract:Nanoscale CeO2 (nanoceria) is a prototypical system that presents d0 ferromagnetism. Using a combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism and modelling, we show that nanostructure, defects and disorder, and non-stoichiometry create magnetically polarized Ce 4f and O 2p hybridized states captured by the vacancy orbitals (Vorb) that are vital to ferromagnetism. Further, we demonstrate that foreign ions (Fe and Co) enhance the moment at Ce 4f sites while the number of Vorb is unchanged, pointing clearly to the mechanism of orbital hybridization being key missing ingredient to understanding the unexpected ferromagnetism in many nanoscale dilute magnetic oxides and semiconductors.

Abstract:Magnetic behaviors of pure CeO(2) nanoparticles and nanocubes have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. It is found that monodisperse CeO(2) nanocubes with an average size of 5.3 nm do show ferromagnetic behavior at ambient temperature with a saturation magnetization of about 5.7 memu/g and coercive force of about 69 Oe. First-principles calculations reveal that oxygen vacancies in pure CeO(2) cause spin polarization of f electrons for Ce ions surrounding oxygen vacancies, resulting in net magnetic moment for pure CeO(2) samples. One oxygen vacancy at surface can induce more magnetic moments than those induced by one oxygen vacancy in bulk. The results obtained here provide evidence that pure CeO(2) sample with oxygen vacancies can indeed have magnetic behavior. This study will stimulate more investigations for understanding the origin of ferromagnetic TM-doped CeO(2) (TM=3d transition metals) in a particular case and TM-doped semiconductor oxides in general at ambient temperature. Abstract:Room-temperature ferromagnetism has been observed in the nanoparticles (7 - 30 nm dia) of nonmagnetic oxides such as CeO2, Al2O3, ZnO, In2O3 and SnO2. The saturated magnetic moments in CeO_2 and Al_2O_3 nanoparticles are comparable to those observed in transition metal doped wide band semiconducting oxides. The other oxide nanoparticles show somewhat lower values of magnetization but with a clear hysteretic behavior. Conversely, the bulk samples obtained by sintering the nanoparticles at high temperatures in air or oxygen became diamagnetic. As there were no magnetic impurities present, we assume that the origin of ferromagnetism may be due to the exchange interactions between localized electron spin moments resulting from oxygen vacancies at the surfaces of nanoparticles. We suggest that ferromagnetism may be a universal characteristic of nanopartilces of metal oxides

Van Vleck Paramagnetism in Undoped and Lu-doped Bulk Ceria

Abstract:The magnetic properties of undoped, bulk CeO2 are not fully understood. In contrast to nanocrystalline ceria that exhibits paramagnetism attributed to Ce3+ at grain surfaces, bulk ceria is weakly paramagnetic, despite the absence of magnetic ions. In the present work, the magnetic susceptibility of bulk ceria ceramics doped with Lu3+, which has neither spin nor orbital angular momentum, was measured in order to assess the relative contributions of the crystal lattice, residual Ce3+ and oxygen vacancies to the overall bulk magnetization. We observed a magnetic response consisting of two parts: temperature independent (5-300 K) magnetic susceptibility, and Curie-Weiss paramagnetism. The temperature independent susceptibility decreases linearly with Lu content, and becomes diamagnetic at 30 mol% Lu. The Curie-Weiss magnetism visible at low temperatures was identified as resulting from a few ppm of Fe contaminant. However, Fe contamination does not contribute to the temperature independent paramagnetism. No contribution from Ce3+ could be detected. The fact that the magnetization decreases with Lu content, even though the concentration of oxygen vacancies, and the lattice defects associated with them, increases, indicates that neither is coupled to the magnetic field. Weak, temperature-independent paramagnetism in non-metals is usually attributed to a second order, Van Vleck-type magnetization. However, Van Vleck paramagnetism requires that the population of the first excited state be constant within the range of temperatures investigated. We discuss possible modifications of the large band gap electronic structure of undoped ceria which could account for our observations.
Giant Positive Magnetoresistance in Co@CoO Nanoparticle Arrays

Abstract:We report the magnetotransport properties of self-assembled Co@CoO nanoparticle arrays at temperatures below 100 K. Resistance shows thermally activated behavior that can be fitted by the general expression of R exp{(T/T0)^v}. Efros-Shklovskii variable range hopping (v=1/2) and simple activation (hard gap, v=1) dominate the high and low temperature region, respectively, with a strongly temperature-dependent transition regime in between. A giant positive magnetoresistance of >1,400% is observed at 10K, which decreases with increasing temperature. The positive MR and most of its features can be explained by the Zeeman splitting of the localized states that suppresses the spin dependent hopping paths in the presence of on-site Coulomb repulsion.

Abstract:The electronic structures and magnetic properties of N-doped CeO2 crystals have been investigated by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory with and without U. The results demonstrate a magnetic moment of 1.00μB per N obtained from all schemes. Predictions based on both LSDA and GGA calculations with and without U capture a half-metallic ground state for the N-doped CeO2 system. Several doped configurations calculations within LSDA demonstrate that there exist robust ferromagnetic couplings between these local magnetic moments, which mainly stem from Hund’s rule coupling. The hole-mediated long-range double exchange mechanism is responsible for the predicted ferromagnetism. It turns out that the percolation concentration needed to establish the collective ferromagnetism is at a few percent. However, further test calculations show that a weakly half-metallic ground state is predicted by GGA+U for this system.
Reversible switching of room temperature ferromagnetism in CeO2-Co nanoparticles

Abstract:We investigated the reversible ferromagnetic (FM) behavior of pure and Co doped CeO2 nanopowders. The as-sintered samples displayed an increasing paramagnetic contribution upon Co doping. Room temperature FM is obtained simply by performing thermal treatments in vacuum at temperatures as low as 500^{\circ}C and it can be switched off by performing thermal treatments in oxidizing conditions. The FM contribution is enhanced as we increase the time of the thermal treatment in vacuum. Those systematic experiments establish a direct relation between ferromagnetism and oxygen vacancies and open a path for developing materials with tailored properties.

Abstract:The authors report the synthesis of cubic europium oxide (C-Eu2O3) nanobelts (NBs) via an electrospinning method with a subsequent one-step calcination approach. Compared with the traditional red emission (612 nm) from the commercial bulk powders, the extended room temperature photoluminescence spectrum (with peaks ranging from ultraviolet (UV) to near infrared (NIR) at 727 nm) of the Eu2O3 NBs was first found to be responsible for the whole visible emission (white light). More excited electronic states were triggered in the Eu2O3 NBs. In addition, the synthesized Eu2O3 NBs are weakly antiferromagnetic with a Neel temperature approximate to 46 K, which can be due to the oxygen vacancy-related mechanism.

Abstract:We demonstrate experimentally that magnetism in ZnO, TiO2, CeO2, and SnO2 nanocrystals (NCs) has a fluctuant nature that varies with capping surfactant type and concentration. By developing a forced hydrolysis approach with additional postprocessing for the synthesis and surfactant capping of these NCs, we effectively avoid the influence of size, shape, and magnetic impurities on the magnetic behavior of NCs, thus revealing the systematic influence of the capping surfactants on the NC magnetism. The x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy results and theoretical calculations clearly show that the magnetism fluctuation with surfactant concentration can be attributed to the periodic variation of spins, which arises from the concentration-dependent electron transfer from surfactants to NCs. Our results not only explain the previously reported seemingly irregular magnetism induced by capping surfactants but also provide an effective approach to tune or optimize the NC magnetism.

Abstract:The present study reports crystalline structure, electronic structure and magnetic properties for nanoparticles undoped CeO2 and C e 1 - x S m x O 2 (x = 0.02 to 0.10, @ 0.02). The nanoparticle samples are synthesized by the co-precipitation method. XRD data shows the successful incorporation of Sm3+ ions at Ce4+ sites in the face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice. The soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy technique is utilized to get an insightful overview of electronic structural properties due to structural defects, chemical states and the development of oxygen vacancies in C e 1 - x S m x O 2 nanoparticles. The soft XAS spectra show a significant Ce and Sm peak in the M4,5 domain, along with the well-defined O K-edge peak. Analysis of Ce M4,5-edges indicates that Ce-ions have both 3 + and 4 + oxidation states. With the incorporation of Sm+3 ions, there is a reduction of Ce4+ states and oxidation of Ce3+ states, as well as a substantial increase in oxygen vacancy concentration. The room-temperature magnetic properties of C e 1 - x S m x O 2 nanoparticles reveal ferromagnetic behavior. The origin of ferromagnetism is explained by F-center exchange (FCE) coupling mechanisms mediated via development of oxygen vacancy and defects.

Direct confirmation of long-range magnetic order and evidence for multipoles in Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$

Abstract:The sesquioxide, Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$, has been a material of intense interest in recent years due to reports of an anomalous giant magnetodielectric effect and emergent mixed crystal field-phonon (vibronic) excitations below a putative antiferromagnetic transition at T$_{N}$ = 6.2 K. The claim of long-range magnetic order in this material is based on heat capacity and temperature-dependent susceptibility measurements; however, multiple neutron diffraction studies have been unable to distinguish any magnetic Bragg peaks. In this article, we present the results of a comprehensive investigation of the low-temperature phase in symmetry-broken polycrystalline Ce$_{2}$O$_{3}$ using a combination of magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, neutron diffraction, triple-axis and time-of-flight (TOF) inelastic neutron scattering (INS), and muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR). Our measurements and subsequent analysis confirm that the transition at T$_{N}$ can be associated with the ordering of moments on the Ce$^{3+}$ site. Both a spontaneous magnetic order observed with $\mu$SR and a dispersive spin-wave spectrum observed with inelastic neutron scattering suggest a model wherein planar dipoles order antiferromagnetically. Notable inconsistencies between $\mu$SR and neutron scattering data within the dipole picture provide strong evidence for the ordering of higher-order moments.

Control of magnetism in cobalt nanoparticles by oxygen passivation

Abstract:We report on the preparation of ferromagnetic cobalt nanospheres with antiferromagnetic oxide capping layer and its implication for the variation in magnetic property. The hcp cobalt nanospheres were prepared by thermal decomposition of cobalt carbonyl in the presence of organic surfactants. The spherical nanoparticles thus prepared were oxidized to grow antiferromagnetic layers of varying composition and thickness on top of cobalt spheres. High resolution transmission electron microscopy confirmed growth of Co3O4 in one case and CoO in another case. Strong exchange anisotropy and enhanced coercive field was observed due to the core-shell structure in Co-CoO system. On the other hand only a marginal improvement was seen in Co-Co3O4 system. A low temperature paramagnetic behavior was also observed that is interpreted in the framework of crystal defects in the oxide shell.

Unusual ferromagnetism in nanoparticles of doped oxides and manganites

Abstract:The observation of unusually large ferromagnetism in the nanoparticles of doped oxides and enhanced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganite nanoparticles have been in focus recently. For the transition metal-doped oxide nanoparticles a phenomenological `charge transfer ferromagnetism' model is recently proposed by Coey et al. From a microscopic calculation with charge transfer between the defect band and mixed valent dopants, acting as reservoir, we show how the unusually high ferromagnetic response develops. The puzzle of nanosize-induced ferromagnetic tendencies in manganites is also addressed within the same framework where lattice imperfections and uncompensated charges at the surface of the nanoparticle are shown to reorganize the surface electronic structures with enhanced double exchange.

Europium-doped cerium oxide nanoparticles: investigating oxygen vacancies and their role in enhanced photocatalytic and magnetic properties

Abstract:In this study, pure and europium-doped (2%, 4%, 6%, and 8%) cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles (NPs) were employed for efficient dye removal through photocatalytic approach. XRD and TEM confirmed the formation of pure CeO2 nanoparticles, while XPS and Raman spectroscopy were used to analyze the electronic properties and lattice defects, such as oxygen vacancies. The presence of lattice defects, which increased with the concentration of Eu, was found to be responsible for the enhanced degradation of Rose Bengal dye (82.4% for 8% Eu-doped sample) in 75 min. FTIR confirmed the chemical composition of the synthesized sample. The band at 617 cm-1, corresponding to the symmetrical stretching vibration mode of (Ce-O-Ce) or (Ce-O-Eu). The magnetic properties of synthesized samples were examined using VSM, revealing an increase from 4.48 to 11.0 emu/g in magnetization. This enhancement was attributed to F-center exchange mechanism (FCE), resulting from the presence of oxygen vacancies. These findings contribute to the development of advanced materials for sustainable wastewater treatment and spintronics.

Abstract:CeVO3 nanocrystals were fabricated by sintering CeVO4 precursors in flowing hydrogen. Under an applied field of 20Oe, a G-type orbital ordering transition, corresponding to the cooperative Jahn–Teller distortion, was enhanced and observed from the magnetization curve of CeVO3 nanorods, different from that of the nanocrystallites. This enhancement of the orbital ordering transition depended on the giant magnetocrystalline anisotropy induced by strong crystallographic anisotropy. Furthermore, a stronger applied field decreased the anisotropy of electronic state induced by spatial shapes of orbitals and confined the cooperative Jahn–Teller distortion by lifting the orbital degeneracy, leading to the suppression of the orbital ordering transition.
Ce3+ and oxygen vacancy mediated tuning of structural and optical properties of CeO2 nanoparticles

Abstract:Ceria nanoparticles were synthesized by hydrolysis of cerium nitrate in basic medium. The cubic fluorite structure of ceria was confirmed by XRD. From TEM studies ceria nanoparticles were found to be spherical in shape with an average diameter of 5nm. The prepared nanoparticles have a predominant orientation along (222) crystallographic plane. Oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ lead to the lattice expansion and strain in CeO2. Peak asymmetry and broadening of Raman active mode peak further confirms the presence of these defects. Total concentration of oxygen vacancies that are present in the ceria nanocrystallites is calculated to be 1.234×1020cm−3. These oxygen vacancies and ceria related defects result in an effective red shifting of the band gap by changing its structural regularity. The visible luminescence peaks are also caused by these Ce3+ and oxygen vacancy centers.

Abstract:This paper reports on the spin glass-like coexistence of competing magnetic orders in oxygen-deficient V2O5 nanoparticles having a broad size distribution. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy yields the surface chemical stoichiometry of nearly V2O4.65 due to significant defect density. Temperature-dependent electrical conductivity and thermopower measurements demonstrate a polaronic conduction mechanism with a hopping energy of about 0.112 eV. The V2O5-{\delta} sample exhibits strong field as well as temperature-dependent magnetic behaviour when measured with a SQUID magnetometer, showing positive magnetic susceptibility across the temperature range of 2-350 K. Field-cooled and zero-field-cooled data indicate hysteresis, suggesting glassy behaviour. The formation of small polarons due to oxygen vacancy defects, compensated by V4+ charge defects, results in Magneto-Electronic Phase Separation (MEPS) and various magnetic exchanges, as predicted by first-principle calculations. This is evidenced by the strong hybridisation of V orbitals in the vicinity of vacant oxygen site. An increase in V4+ defects shows an antiferromagnetic (AFM) component. The magnetic diversity in undoped V2O4.9 originates from defect density and their random distribution, leading to MEPS. This involves localised spins in polarons and ferromagnetic (FM) clusters on a paramagnetic (PM) background, while V4+ dimers induce AFM interactions. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra measured at different temperatures indicate a dominant paramagnetic signal at a g-value of 1.97 due to oxygen defects, with a broad FM resonance-like hump. Both signals diminish with increasing temperature. Neutron diffraction data rules out long-range magnetic ordering, reflecting the composition as V2O4.886. Despite the FM hysteresis, no long-range order is observed in ND data, consistent with the polaron cluster-like FM with MEPS nature.

Abstract:CeO2 nanoparticles have been successfully synthesized by hydrothermal method at different temperatures, using Ce(NO3)3 · 6H2O as the cerium source and CO(NH2)2 as the precipitant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectrometry, ultraviolet–visible (UV–Vis) spectroscopy and magnetization measurements were used to characterize the samples. The results show that with the increase in synthesis temperatures, the crystallite size increases and the dislocation density decreases. XPS and Raman spectra reflect the presence of oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ ions. All the samples indicate a high UV–Vis light absorption. The photocatalytic activity decreases with the increase in synthesis temperatures, which can be attributed to the energy gap and grain size of the nanoparticles. Magnetization measurements revealed that all the samples show room temperature ferromagnetism (RTMF) which can be attributed to the effects of the oxygen vacancies and Ce3+ ions.

Both signals diminish with increasing temperature. Neutron diffraction data rules out long-range magnetic ordering, reflecting the composition as V2O4.886. Despite the FM hysteresis, no long-range order is observed in neutron diffraction data, consistent with the polaron cluster-like FM with MEPS nature. This detailed study shall advance the understanding of the diverse magnetic behaviour observed in undoped non-magnetic systems.

Abstract:The electronic structures and magnetic properties in Carbon-doped CeO2 have been investigated by means of first-principles calculations based on the LSDA+U scheme. The results demonstrate a magnetic moment of 2.00 mu(B) per supercell with one Carbon dopant which mainly stems from Hund's rule coupling based on rather localized 2p, 5d and 4f states. The hole-mediated long-range magnetic coupling between local magnetic moments can be attributed to the collective effects of the p-p, p-d, and p-f hybridizations between C and neighboring O or Ce atoms. Ferromagnetism and half-metallic characteristics of C-doped CeO2 make it possible to be an ideal material for spintronic devices. Crown Copyright (C) 2010 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
