Abstract:Timely and accurate information on field management practices is of critical importance to agricultural production, food security and ecological protection. The temporal changes of bare soil in cropland are closely related to cropping management. Although some studies on mapping cropping intensity have introduced bare soil identification to assist in obtaining crop growth cycles, few studies focused on the temporal changes of bare soil in cropland. We used Geospatial Soil Sensing System method to extract cropland bare soil of Sentinel-2 images from 2020 to 2022. The quantitative evaluation showed R2 of soil line analysis was greater than 0.8. We further developed a rule-based algorithm based upon bare soil extraction to determine crop growth cycles and map cropping intensity. The sample-based evaluation suggested that the new algorithm for mapping cropping intensity reached an overall accuracy of 94.3%, and the R2 was 0.93 in comparison with the sown areas from national statistical data. This algorithm provides a simple and efficient way to map cropping intensity through identifying the occurrence of bare soil, which could facilitate operational and large-scale mapping and hold great relevance for near real-time monitoring.
