Abstract:A rate-flexible hybrid constellation shaping (HCS) is proposed and demonstrated in polar-coded discrete multi-tone (DMT) free-space optical (FSO) communications. This joint design considers the constraints of geometry and probabilities in coded modulations to maximize the channel capacity and flexibly adjusts the parameters according to the data rates. Compared to the regular scheme over free-space links, the capacity of the proposed scheme at different data rates is improved by about 0.25 bits/ symbol when the launch power is -6dBm. And the power budgets of our approach with polar codes are saved more than 1.0 dB at the bit error rate of 10(-4) . Even in weak turbulence conditions, the Q2 factor of the proposed maintains the maximum and is improved by 1.84 similar to 3.40dB than the regular scheme, indicating its better ability to combat turbulence.

Abstract:An adaptive polar coded probabilistic shaping scheme for free-space optical (FSO) communication is proposed and demonstrated to improve transmission performance. The input distribution can be adaptively adjusted by maximizing the achievable rate under different FSO turbulence channels. Furthermore, the transmission rate is less than the achievable rate to guarantee reliable transmission. In different FSO turbulent channels, the feasible regions of the optimization problem are explored with the aid of the exponential distribution, and the complexity of the single optimization is decreased to $O( {\log ( {{\varepsilon ^{ - 1}}} )} )$. The systematic polar codes are adopted to combat the fading, and a sparse-dense encoder for polar codes is designed to maintain the target distribution. The achievable rate and block error rate (BLER) performance of this adaptive probabilistic shaping scheme are evaluated. The results indicate that the adaptive non-uniform distribution generated by the proposed scheme outperforms the uniform distribution under the same channel conditions. The code rate of 0.8 is more suitable than 0.9 in coping with various turbulence channels. The proposed scheme can obtain a range of 0.500.90 dB shaping gains over the uniform distribution from weak to moderate turbulence channels for both the achievable rate and the BLER performance at 1.5 bits per channel use.

Abstract:A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. An encoding method is proposed such that in combination with Gray labeled amplitude shift keying the channel input symbols have a desired non-uniform distribution, resulting in a shaping gain at the receiver compared with the conventional bit-interleaved coded modulation. The proposed scheme mainly affects the encoder, and the complexity increase at the receiver is negligible.

Abstract:Free-space optical (FSO) communications can provide high speed and large capacity, yet atmospheric turbulence poses a challenge. We propose a novel turbulence-oriented rotated probabilistic shaping (TRPS) scheme to achieve joint gains in coding, shaping, and signal space diversity for FSO systems. Our approach significantly enhances achievable rates in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions as turbulence intensity increases by optimizing probabilities and rotation angles. For instance, the achievable rate can be increased by 0.08 to 0.23 b/s from weak to strong turbulence compared to non-rotated uniform 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16QAM) with a rate of 3.0 bits per symbol (b/s). Accordingly, the non-equivalent pair wise error probability as an upper bound on the average symbol error rate (ASER) is derived and verified, theoretically validating the superiority of TRPS in FSO systems. Furthermore, simulation results on ASER, and post-forward error correction bit error rate (BER) using polar codes demonstrate the potential of the proposed scheme. Compared to the uniform transmission without rotation, TRPS achieves joint gains of over 11.5 dB and 3 dB in ASER and BER for both 16QAM and 32QAM with a shaping depth of 0.05 in strong turbulence conditions.

Abstract:A new polar coding scheme for higher order modulation is presented. The proposed scheme is based on multi-level coding (MLC) with natural labeling, where the bit-level corresponding to the sign-bit is generated in dependence on the previous bit-levels, such that the modulated symbols are distributed according to a target non-uniform distribution resulting in a shaping gain. This is realized by replacing the polar encoder in the sign-bit level by a successive cancellation (SC) decoder, such that the overall complexity is not increased compared to a conventional MLC scheme with polar codes. Numerical simulations show significant performance improvements of the proposed approach compared to conventional transmission schemes with uniform symbol distribution. By using more complex decoders (e.g. SC list decoder), the proposed scheme outperforms Gallager's random coding bound.

Abstract:Thanks to the flexibility and adaptability of polar codes, a Free-space Optical (FSO) communication scheme combining it with probabilistic shaping (PS) and pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) is proposed to achieve capacity improvement in atmospheric turbulence (AT) channels. The proposed scheme generates a non-uniform probability distribution PAM-8 transmission symbol by a multilevel polar-coded modulation (MLPC) method equipped with the most significant bit (MSB) level shaping precoder. Under the selected turbulence conditions, it provides up to 1.09dB theoretical shaping gain of capacity at the specified information rate (AIR) of 1.859 bit/channel use and 0.82dB performance gain in block error rate.

Abstract:To solve the problems of interruption events and the high bit-error rate of the FSO system caused by atmospheric turbulence, an FSO cooperative communication scheme based on system polarization code is proposed. In this scheme, the upper limit of the average bit-error rate of the atmospheric turbulence channel is used to construct the frozen bit set of the system polarization code, and the information bit set of the S−R link is recovered by using the ownership relationship between the frozen bit set of the S−R link and the S−D link at the destination node. Finally, the information bits of the S−R link and S−D link are combined using equal gain combination, and the original information is recovered by decoding. The simulation results show that the FSO cooperative communication system can overcome the influence of atmospheric turbulence and improve the system performance, and the bit-error rate performance of the FSO cooperative communication system can be improved by at least 0.5dB; the outage probability of the FSO cooperative communication system can be reduced to less than 10−7, and it shows a stable inhibitory effect on strong turbulence conditions.

Abstract:In this paper, the probabilistically shaped polar-coded multiple-input multiple-output free-space optical (MIMO-FSO) communication system with or without spatially correlated (SC) fading is investigated to improve transmission performance. The designed shaping-polar encoder can flexibly generate three typical shapes of distribution via shaping bits and be decoded in the conventional method. The achievable information rate (AIR) of MIMO-FSO systems with or without SC fading is evaluated to determine the number of shaping bits for the shaping-polar encoder. The non-pairwise distributions are demonstrated to be more suitable for turbulence channels than other distributions. The results show that the AIR of the shaped 4 × 4 systems even exceeds that of the uniform 4 × 5 systems in the low signal-to-noise ratio regions over strong turbulence channels. In terms of bit error rate performance, more than 15 dB shaping gains can be achieved by the shaped 4 × 4 systems compared to the uniform single-input single-output polar-coded systems. In addition, the shaped 4 × 4 systems outperform the uniform ones ranging from 1 dB to 1.9 dB over different atmospheric turbulence channels with or without SC fading, comparable to the uniform MIMO systems with one more physical receiver.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a Chaotic Probability Constellation Shaping (CPCS) method in Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication to enhance security and improve the performance of the transmission data. Gather as many points as possible in the middle via chaotic controlling. The influence of turbulence on the signal transmission can be attenuated to the minimum. In the simulation, a ratio of 56Gb/s 16-QAM signal is transmitted 1-km space channel with an attenuation index of 10dB/km. The CPCS technique can improve almost 0.5 dB optical signal noise ratio (OSNR) performance @10(-3) BER than that of the related original signal. Simulation results indicate that the proposed method not only enhances the security but also improves the BER performance.

Abstract:We review probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS), which has been a key enabler for several recent record-setting optical fiber communications experiments. PCS provides both fine-grained rate adaptability and energy efficiency (sensitivity) gains. We discuss the reasons for the fundamentally better performance of PCS over other constellation shaping techniques that also achieve rate adaptability, such as time-division hybrid modulation, and examine in detail the impact of sub-optimum shaping and forward error correction (FEC) on PCS systems. As performance metrics for systems with PCS, we compare information-theoretic measures such as mutual information (MI), generalized MI (GMI), and normalized GMI, which enable optimization and quantification of the information rate (IR) that can be achieved by PCS and FEC. We derive the optimal parameters of PCS and FEC that maximize the IR for both ideal and non-ideal PCS and FEC. To avoid plausible pitfalls in practice, we carefully revisit key assumptions that are typically made for ideal PCS and FEC systems.

Abstract:In this paper, the polar coded probabilistic amplitude shaping (PC-PAS) is investigated in a free space optical (FSO) communication system to combat the fading induced by turbulence. The achievable rate of multiple level coding (MLC) and bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) schemes with different distributions are studied in turbulence channels, which proves that the non-uniform distribution can achieve larger achievable rates than the uniform distribution in the FSO turbulence channel. And the PC-PAS techniques based on MLC and BICM are both investigated. For MLC-based PC-PAS, the dynamically frozen bits scheme is adopted and the modification to the labeling rule is proposed to label the non-negative constellation points. For the BICM-based PC-PAS, the exchange scheme is proposed to combine the polar codes and PAS technique. The Block error rate (BLER) is evaluated by the Monte Carlo simulation method. From the results, both the MLC-based and the BICM-based PC-PAS can improve the performance compared to the uniform distribution. And the PC-PAS based on MLC outperforms the PC-PAS based on BICM in the same turbulence condition.

Abstract:In this paper, for the first time, to the best of our knowledge, polar codes are introduced and experimentally implemented in a free space optical (FSO) communication system to combat atmospheric turbulence induced fading. By analyzing the characteristics of the turbulence channel, a method of evaluating the channel state information for polar decoding is proposed that can achieve good trade-off between the performance and the computational complexity of this polar coded system. To verify our scheme, an intensity modulation direct detection FSO communication experimental platform with a turbulence chamber is established. For the weak turbulence condition, comparing with the low-density parity check codes, the experimental results show that our proposed scheme has stronger error correcting capacity and lower computational complexity in combating the turbulence induced fading. Moreover, for moderate and strong turbulence conditions, the gamma-gamma turbulence model is adopted for constructing the Monte Carlo simulation. The results of the experiment and simulation both show that our proposed scheme can effectively combat atmospheric turbulence induced fading with a relatively low computational complexity in a wide range of turbulence conditions. Abstract:In this paper, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, we investigate the experiment of polar coded probabilistic shaped 8-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PS-PAM8) in weak turbulence. A systematic interleaver (SIL) is proposed to improve the polar code performance for PS-PAM8, compatible with the 5 G channel coding standard. Considering the effects of turbulence and shaped constellations, the pilot with identical distributions as the transmitted data is used for dynamic channel estimation to avoid demodulation failure. Moreover, the application of hybrid equalization with nonlinear and linear equalizers effectively reduces the receiver sensitivity. In 25 GBd transmission over a 4 m free-space link, the transmission performance of polar coded PAM8 schemes with SIL is better than that of the low-density parity check code by 1.0 dB, and the power budget is further saved by 0.72∼0.83 dB after linear equalization. Meanwhile, the shaping gains of polar coded PS-PAM8 with SIL and hybrid equalization are up to 2.0 dB at 1.5 bits/channel use. In addition, different weak turbulence conditions can be generated inside a chamber, and the observed channel fading is consistent with the log-normal model. The results show that the proposed polar coded PS scheme can improve the Q-factor by 0.49∼1.74 dB in different turbulence conditions.

Abstract:Huffman-coded sphere shaping (HCSS) is an algorithm for finite-length probabilistic constellation shaping, which provides nearly optimal energy efficiency at low implementation complexity. In this paper, we experimentally study the nonlinear performance of HCSS employing dual-polarization 64-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (DP-64QAM) in an extended-reach single-span link comprising 200 km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF). We investigate the effects of shaping sequence length, dimensionality of symbol mapping, and shaping rate. We determine that the naïve approach of Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution matching - which is optimal in the additive white Gaussian noise channel - provides a maximum achievable information rate (AIR) gain of 0.18 bits/4D-symbol with respect to uniform signaling at optimum launch power in the infinite length regime. Conversely, HCSS can achieve a gain of 0.37 bits/4D-symbol over uniform signaling using amplitude sequence length of 32, which may be implemented without multiplications, using integer comparison and addition operations only. Coded system performance, with a net data rate of approximately 425 Gb/s for both shaped and uniform inputs, is also analyzed.

Abstract:The four-wave-mixing (FWM) noises are modeled when walk-off and intersymbol interference (ISI) are taken into account for any centrosymmetric constellation shaped signal in orthogonal frequency-division multiplexed (OFDM) with phase-conjugated twin waves (PCTW) scheme. Bit error rate (BER) and the equivalent Q-factor for any constellation shaped signal are also modeled when the FWM and amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noises are taken into account as additive white Gaussian noise. By using the newly derived semi-analytic models, example calculations are carried out for 16-ary signal in PCTW OFDM system with four cases classified according to some proposed constellation shaping schemes adopted or not. A hybrid constellation shaping scheme consisted of Huffman-coded probabilistic shaping and radius-optimized geometric shaping is proposed. The performance gain in terms of the equivalent Q-factor is calculated to be about 0.563 dB for 16-ary signal in PCTW OFDM system with the proposed hybrid constellation shaping scheme over the square conventional 16QAM signal. The performance degradation for such system due to the effects of ISI on the FWM noise is also evaluated by using the semi-analytic calculation models.

Abstract:An all-optical constellation add-drop multiplexer (CADM) based on constellation update is proposed, aiming to improve the flexibility in the elastic optical switch . We use QPSK as the minimum granularity of the switch to realize the constellation add/drop for 16-QAM. In this scheme, a bi-directional phase-sensitive amplification (PSA) is employed to de-multiplex the 16-QAM into two PAM-4s simultaneously. Then the recovered two PAM-4s can be converted to a QPSK signal representing the quadrant symbol of the original 16-QAM through saturated four-wave mixing (FWM) and coherent addition. Finally, a brand new 16-QAM can be obtained through the FWM between the converted QPSK, an added QPSK, and the original 16-QAM signals. The feasibility of the scheme can be confirmed by the transfer functions and input–output constellations. The error vector magnitude (EVM) and bit error ratio (BER) of the updated 16-QAM and converted QPSK signals are calculated to evaluate the performance of the scheme.

Abstract:The FSO-OFDM(Free Space Optical Communication-Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) model based on light polarization is designed.We expatiated on the principles of the transceivers and the scatter channel.As the scatter channel is a frequency selective fading channel,each subchannel impulse response keeps correlation during coherent time.The correlation of the same subchannel impulse response is utilized during seriate OFDM symbols and Linear Mean Squared(LMS) algorithm is adopted to estimate the iterative initial value of the future symbols,then to get the channel impulse response.The horizontal and vertical polarization light paths are the same,so the characteristics of atmosphere channel are the same.At last,the more accurate channel impulse response is gotten after weighting the two estimative channel impulse responses.The simulation results indicate that the LMS algorithm can track the channel and get 2dB improvement of system BER.

Abstract:The majority of modern communication systems adopts quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) constellations as transmission schemes. Due to their square structure, however, QAM do not provide satisfying protection to phase noise effects as the number of constellation points grows, increasing at the same time their peak to average power ratio (PAPR). This requires an expensive power amplifier and oscillator at the transmitter to guarantee low distortion, complicating the adoption of dense transmission schemes in practical high-data rate systems. In this paper, we construct a coded modulation scheme based on regular amplitude and phase shift keying (RAPSK) modulations. We propose a novel multilevel coding (MLC) labeling for the constellation points separating amplitude and phase domains. We provide a novel multistage decoding (MSD) scheme allowing for a low-complexity log-likelihood ratio (LLR) calculation for soft-input decoding of component codes, along with a suitable rate design. Finally, we compare the proposed scheme with state-of-the-art QAM constellations and optimized constellations in the presence of phase noise.

Abstract:Probabilistic constellation shaping (PCS) offers a significant performance improvement over uniform signaling. It was recently discovered that long blocks are not required to achieve maximum shaping gain when transmitting over the nonlinear fiber channel because short-length PCS effectively mitigates fiber nonlinear interference (NLI). The reason for this behavior is that short-length PCS implicitly induces some temporal properties in the shaped transmit sequence that are beneficial for the fiber-optic channel. To achieve robust data-aided digital signal processing of high-order QAM, periodic quaternary phase shift keying pilots are typically inserted into the high-order QAM transmit sequence. In this work, we investigate in simulations the effect of such pilot-aided signaling on NLI mitigation. Albeit modifying the temporal properties of the shaped transmit sequence, a pilot rate of 1/32 is found to not alter the beneficial effects of short-length PCS. The operation meaning of this finding is that even with pilot-aided signaling, long PCS block lengths are not required for maximum shaping gain.
