Abstract:As a typical railway maintenance apparatus, the rail inspection trolley is often equipped with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and several laser scanners (LSs) to measure the track geometry. Due to the frequent motion and vibration, the extrinsic parameters between these vehicle sensors should be periodically calibrated and rectified to compensate for the unexpected structure displacement and deformation. To meet the on-site calibration demands, a compact apparatus with a specific 3D calibration target is devised, and the scanned profile by LS can be accordingly transferred to the reference coordinate of IMU via our calibration apparatus. In our method, a 3D target is designed to contain several groups of marked circles across multiple side steps. An auxiliary 2D camera is utilized to locate the laser plane of the LS. Without any assisted motion device, the pose of the laser plane can be calculated based on the cross-ratio invariance principle of perspective projection after image detection of these concentric circle centers. Another contribution is to improve the laser plane localization accuracy by introducing a new concentric circle-based center detection method and a light stripe center extraction algorithm under a dual-view perspective. The proposed apparatus and method have been tested in real rail inspection vehicles for several months. It is verified that our method has higher accuracy and more convenience than the conventional ball target method in the on-site operating environment.
