Abstract:Personalized Environment Control Systems (PECS) are significant for improving thermal comfort and saving air conditioning energy but it is challenging to coordinate multiple PECS devices. This study explored an easy but straightforward connecting method for multiple PECS devices based on infrared remote-control technology. On-situ survey and environment monitoring were conducted in an open-space office covering summer, transient, and winter seasons. The surrounding environment conditions, usage behavior, and comfort effects of two typical PECS were analyzed throughout the year. Seven machine learning algorithms were applied to predict the on/off state and power level for each single piece of PECS device. The results showed that the air temperature and radiant temperature distribution in the open-space office was inhomogeneous in spatial and temporal dimensions. Air temperature at local workstation was the major factor (OR>2) affecting the usage of PECS. Devices such as desk fans and leg warmers could correct occupants’ thermal sensation toward thermal neutrality in hot summer and cold winter, respectively, thus improving thermal comfort. By using 8 objective parameters and 1 subjective parameter as input features, the machine learning algorithms could achieve 81% and 52% accuracy in on/off state and power level prediction for desk fans, and 75% and 52% for leg warmers. The coupling effects, control logic, and outlooks for future PECS were discussed, which could be useful for more intelligent and higher-efficiency PECS development.

Meanwhile, spending more time in homes leads people to constantly improve comfort there. Considering the fact that space heating makes a great contribution to residential energy consumption and thermal comfort, this paper presents a novel hybrid intelligent control (HIC) system to manage space heating devices in a smart home with advanced technologies to save energy while to increase thermal comfort level. The approach combines a meta-heuristic algorithm used to compute a setpoint from the Predicted Mean Vote model with a Proportional-Integral-Derivative controller for indoor temperature regulation. In order to validate the system, computer simulations are conducted and analysed. The results indicate the proposed control system can provide better thermal comfort comparing with other conventional and intelligent control methods, and consume less energy when demand response is considered. Abstract:In recent years, our time spent indoors has risen to around 90% and to maintain an occupant's comfort and well-being, Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) is monitored. Concerned with inhabitant's satisfaction and health, the adoption of smart solutions for IEQ monitoring and improvement has expanded. The solution this study explores is an occupant-centric approach involving the implementation of an Internet of Things (IoT) IEQ sensing network in a prominent office skyscraper in Hong Kong. Over the course of 15 months, real-time IEQ data were collected from 12 locations within the building. The data were collected at 1-min time intervals and consisted of readings of indoor air temperature, radiant temperature, relative humidity, air velocity, carbon dioxide (CO2), particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), horizontal illuminance levels, and sound pressure levels, which served as the basis of the assessment made about the qualities of thermal comfort, indoor air quality (IAQ), aural comfort, and visual comfort. Compared to traditional periodic surveys, this IoT-based sensing network captured instantaneous environmental variations, providing valuable insights into the indoor environment's spatial characterization and temporal dynamics. This smart solution also assisted facility management in terms of identifying sources of discomfort and developing effective mitigation strategies accordingly. This study presents an occupant-centric approach to improve occupant comfort and energy efficiency within office buildings. By customizing the built environment to enhance occupants' well-being, comfort, and productivity, an emphasis is placed on a more personalized and occupant-focused design strategy. This approach integrates technical design with human experience, highlighting the importance of real-time physical and subjective surveys for achieving optimal results.

Abstract:In this paper, an intelligent laboratory control system based on Internet of things (IOT) is designed and implemented to solve the problems of low utilization and hidden security problems caused by manual laboratory management. In order that the laboratory administrator can know the relevant environmental status of the laboratory at any time on the mobile terminal and remotely control the laboratory equipment, this paper constructs a laboratory control system based on the perception of the IOT, including three modules: environment detection, background management system and access control settings. This system can use the laboratory resources effectively, realize the saving and reasonable distribution of human resources, improve the laboratory environment, and reduce the energy consumption to a certain extent. Abstract:It is well known that buildings have a sizeable energy and environmental footprint. In particular, in environments like university campuses, the occupants as well as occupancy in shared spaces varies over time. Systems for cooling in such environments that are centrally controlled are typically threshold driven and do not account for occupant feedback and thus are often relying on a reactive approach (fix after identifying problems). Therefore, having a fixed thermal operating set point may not be optimal in such cases—both from an occupant comfort and well-being as well as an energy efficiency perspective. To address this issue, a study was conducted which involved development and deployment of an experimental Internet of Things (IoT) prototype system and an Android application that facilitated people engagement on a university campus located in the UAE which typically exhibits hot climatic conditions. This paper showcases data driven insights obtained from this study, and in particular, how to achieve a balance between the conflicting goals of improving occupant comfort and energy efficiency. Findings from this study underscore the need for regular reassessments and adaptation. The proposed solution is low cost and easy to deploy and has the potential to reap significant savings through a reduction in energy consumption with estimates indicating around 50–100 kWh/day of savings per building and the resulting environmental impact. These findings would appeal to stakeholders who are keen to improve energy efficiency and reduce their operating expenses and environmental footprint in such climatic conditions. Furthermore, collective action from a large number of entities could result in significant impact through this cumulative effect.

Abstract:Buildings account for approximately one-third of global energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Accurate occupancy data is critical for enabling energy-efficient control strategies and enhancing comfort in buildings. However, most current research on multi-zone occupancy-centric control (OCC) relies on simulated rather than real-world occupancy data. Additionally, the optimal operational intervals of existing OCC-based HVAC systems have not been fully explored in dynamic indoor environments. This study presents an extensive experimental study evaluating the impact of multi-zone real-world OCC systems on energy conservation and comfort in a multi-zone building. We collected real-world occupancy data using vision-based methods and developed HVAC control strategies using operational intervals of 5, 10, 15, 30, and 60 min to evaluate their effects on energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Simulations were performed using OpenStudio with EnergyPlus. The results indicate that customized operational intervals significantly improve both energy efficiency and comfort. Shorter intervals can provide effective energy savings in dynamic settings, while longer intervals yield improved comfort and energy efficiency in more stable environments. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of OCC systems in optimizing energy usage and comfort and sets the stage for future developments in building management strategies. Emerging trends, such as integrating large language models into OCC, are also discussed for future exploration.

Abstract:Advances in Internet of Things (IoT) technologies have had a profound impact on the experiential tasks of the smart home, particularly automated tasks supported by sensors, embedded systems, and communication devices that are capable of autonomously performing a range of tasks previously performed by humans. However, the improvement in the level of smart home automation has not necessarily promoted more meaningful, relaxing, and positive experiences for users. This is largely due to the fact that it often overlooks the meaningful involvement of humans in the process. This paper proposes a conceptual design model for a smart home through two studies that aim to maintain the benefits of automation while ensuring positive experiences with user engagement tasks. Study 1 involved qualitative data using semi-structured interviews to understand what tasks lead to positive user experiences (P-UX) during the use of the smart home and what kind of factors influence these positive experiences. Study 2, using an online questionnaire, quantitatively investigated the varying impact of these factors on positive experiences in both automation and human–machine interactions. The results of both studies show that there are nine factors that influence positive user experience in the smart home, with instrumentality, convenience, and flexibility playing an important role in the positive experience of automation, aesthetics, immersion, association, and memory, having a greater effect on the positive experience of user engagement in interactions, and customization and emotion contributing to both paradigms. In future smart home design, this model will help designers rationally allocate tasks between automation and human–machine interaction as a way to enhance the overall positive user experience.

Abstract:Abstract: Currently, the dual threats of global climate change and environmental pollution are becoming increasingly prominent, and people urgently need to explore effective energy management solutions to reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. This paper proposed a design scheme of carbon footprint intelligent detection and management system based on Internet of Things (IoT) technology. This plan optimized energy utilization by intelligently monitoring and controlling the energy consumption of household appliances, thereby improving energy efficiency and reducing carbon emissions. The experimental results showed that after one year of use, the energy consumption of air conditioning equipment using IoT technology decreased by 35.7%, and carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 31.6%; the energy consumption of refrigerators using IoT technology decreased by 30.1%, and carbon dioxide emissions decreased by 29.2%; the energy consumption of washing machines using IoT technology was reduced by 41.2%, and carbon dioxide emissions was reduced by 31.1%. The design scheme of carbon footprint intelligent detection and management system using IoT technology is feasible. Through the comparison of experimental data, it was found that it can significantly optimize the energy utilization of household appliances, reduce unnecessary carbon emissions, and make an important contribution to environmental protection and sustainable development.

Exploring Smart Commercial Building Occupants' Perceptions and Notification Preferences of Internet of Things Data Collection in the United States

Abstract:Data collection through the Internet of Things (IoT) devices, or smart devices, in commercial buildings enables possibilities for increased convenience and energy efficiency. However, such benefits face a large perceptual challenge when being implemented in practice, due to the different ways occupants working in the buildings understand and trust in the data collection. The semi-public, pervasive, and multi-modal nature of data collection in smart buildings points to the need to study occupants' understanding of data collection and notification preferences. We conduct an online study with 492 participants in the US who report working in smart commercial buildings regarding: 1) awareness and perception of data collection in smart commercial buildings, 2) privacy notification preferences, and 3) potential factors for privacy notification preferences. We find that around half of the participants are not fully aware of the data collection and use practices of IoT even though they notice the presence of IoT devices and sensors. We also discover many misunderstandings around different data practices. The majority of participants want to be notified of data practices in smart buildings, and they prefer push notifications to passive ones such as websites or physical signs. Surprisingly, mobile app notification, despite being a popular channel for smart homes, is the least preferred method for smart commercial buildings.

Abstract:Recent study reported that users were shutting down their smart thermostat due to the poor performance in comfort and energy saving. This study aims to explore how automation in energy conservation system should be designed from a new perspective: comfort-energy trade-off. Scenario-based survey was conducted with 106 participants. Results showed that monitored control (high level of automation) was most satisfied in energy-saving-motivated control scenario and consensual control (low level of automation) was most satisfied in comfort-motivated control scenario. Users perceived the same sense of control in consensual control and monitored control as in manual control (no automation) in most scenarios. Thus, the results indicated that automatic environment control should not always be the same, but adaptively designed in accordance with specific comfort-energy trade-off situations, considering different control scenario, personal requirement and culture.

Abstract:The increasing number of devices connected to the internet paves the way for the new era of the internet of things (IoT) computing in which almost every object surrounding us can be transformed into smart entities by equipping objects with sensors, actors, and connectivity technologies. In this study, we seek to examine the consumer acceptance of IoT in smart home context. Drawing on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2), we propose an integrative theoretical model that extends UTAUT2 and offers a more comprehensive picture of the factors influencing IoT acceptance and use. The results show that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, hedonic motivation, and price value are significant predictors of smart home acceptance and use. The results also show that trust and security risk play a significant role in smart home acceptance. We conclude with a discussion of the theoretical and practical implications.

Abstract:The household is the basic unit of a residential community or building. High-resolution, long-term open data are necessary to help study residential electricity consumption, smart home technologies, and electricity flexibility technologies at household level. This paper introduces an IoT-based data collection platform (IDCP) consisting of gateways, sensors, and cloud servers. This platform can collect data on the occupant presence, indoor environment, window-opening states, and appliance electricity consumption simultaneously. This study deployed the IDCP in a single-family apartment in Beijing, China, and compiled a dataset, namely, CN-OBEE, including data on the per-minute occupant behavior, thermal environment, and appliance electricity use of the apartment for an entire year (from May 31, 2021, to May 31, 2022), and hourly meteorological data collected by the nearest national weather station during the same period. This dataset is the first detailed and publicly available occupant behavior and electricity use dataset for Chinese homes. As a regional feature, the dataset compiled by this study includes window-opening behavior and the use of split air conditioners (ACs).

Abstract:Occupant-centric control (OCC) is intelligent control of building systems based on the real comfort needs of occupants. This paper provides a comprehensive review of how real-world data on energy-related occupant behavior (OB) can be integrated and applied in OCC systems. The aim is to accurately portray the real occupant needs and improve energy efficiency without sacrificing occupant comfort. This paper first introduces two types of OB: detailed occupancy states and energy-interaction behaviors, including methods to monitor, establish, and predict these OB. Then, OCC is divided into real-time control and model-based predictive control, and each of these four scenarios is discussed. It extensively reviews OCC methods for different equipment in four cases, covering control strategies, control scales, comfort enhancement scenarios, and energy-saving potential for each category. It is summarized that despite extensive research on OB, there are still significant challenges in integrating this research into OCC. A major issue is the lack of a bridge connecting monitoring acquired information and controls. In addition, the article reviews the current state of OCC platform development. The future direction should be combined with advanced Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, WiFi, and other communication technologies to obtain information about people's behavior and real needs in order to create truly energy efficient and comfortable smart environments. The article also discusses how enhancing the real-time feedback capability of the OCC system can help improve the overall control system capability and the importance of testing through experimentation.

Abstract:With the development and progress of technology, people’s requirements for living quality are increasingly higher. This study builds an indoor thermal comfort environmental monitoring system through the Internet of Things (IoT) architecture to explore the thermal comfort of people in indoor environments. Then, the applicable indicators are selected from a series of thermal comfort pointers, and the controllable indoor environmental parameters are analyzed and simulated on MATLAB to obtain the impact on the thermal comfort indicators, which can serve as important data to set up the fuzzy rule base. Next, according to the ISO7730 comfort standard and energy saving, three ways to control thermal comfort are proposed. With Arduino UNO as the development substrate, the sensing nodes for the indoor environment are set up, and the wireless sensing network is configured with ESP8266 to transmit the sensing data to the terminal. Monitored by the C# human-machine interface, the controllable load is controlled by wireless remote mode. Finally, the data is stored in the database for follow-up experimentation and analysis. Through actual measurement experiments, the thermal comfort and energy saving effects, under comfort, general, and energy-saving modes, as proposed in this study, are verified to achieve a balance between thermal comfort and energy saving.

Abstract:In contemporary society, people put forward higher requirements for the living environment of the house, and health comfort has become one of the important judgment bases for customers when buying a house. However, the current evaluation of health comfort is abstract and post-verified. Therefore, it’s extremely important to split and quantify indicators (light/temperature/pollutants, etc.) for health comfort, and monitoring indicators related to the indoor environment. This paper designs a real-time environment data monitoring system based on Internet of Things (IOT) technology for the completed commercial housing before delivery. The system consists of hardware and software, including data sensing part, subsystem integration end, wireless transmission network and display terminal. After the preliminary comparison and analysis of the real-time monitoring data of the indoor and outdoor environment of the completed commercial housing, it proves that the significant characteristics of the system include the characteristics of high degree of general degree, strong real -time and good stability. Besides, it is easy to be moved, which can enable people to better understand the comfort and health of the housing before the delivery of the housing. At the same time, the periodicity of the monitoring time and the universality of the system enable the system to be recycled, greatly reduce the cost, and have good commercial application value.

Abstract:Occupant-centric smart thermostats (OCST) are believed to be able to improve energy efficiency and thermal comfort but their development and implementation are challenging. This study introduces the design of an OCST, highlighting its temperature control logic, heating and cooling energy-saving, and comfort improvement. A human-machine interaction interface was designed allowing occupants to conveniently set indoor temperature schedules on smartphones. Two simple yet fast methods for estimating energy savings were developed to instantly calculate heating and cooling energy-saving rates, allowing users to immediately adjust temperature schedules. Measured data from 50 households were collected and analyzed to improve indoor thermal comfort and identify potential energy savings. The results showed that 62% of users tended to maintain a constant indoor air temperature throughout the year. Equipped with functions for schedule setting, indoor temperature fluctuation range control, and occupancy detection, the introduced OCST can reduce annual heating and cooling energy consumption in single-family houses by 7 to 25% and 15 to 40%, respectively. Additionally, the temperature control logic of the OCST with multiple connected terminals aims to ensure maximum comfort in as many rooms as possible. This work can serve as a reference for the future development of OCST.

Abstract:The arrival of the Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm has opened the door to a variety of services for building users. Considering the long-lasting issue of high energy use by buildings and low-energy literacy, it is tempting to use this new technology for increasing the literacy of users. This paper shows the results of a study performed in two pilot buildings with real users that have interacted with a series of energy educational interventions that encourage them in a timed and personalised way to reduce their energy consumption. The interventions aimed at reducing the consumption of energy and a close follow-up of the intervention from a behavioural aspect has been performed. The results show that the users, when interacting with the intervention and staying active, can reduce the energy consumption in the building by more than 30%, but the average savings are of 20%. This is in consensus with the literature, but in our case, the intervention has been one showing that personalised methods can result in energy reductions as large as those of more standard interventions.

Abstract:With the development of society and the improvement of living standards, people pay more and more attention to their own living environment and life safety, and more people are gradually paying attention to the impact of the quality of the living environment on their health and work efficiency, and to meet this demand of people, it is necessary to effectively monitor and control the living environment. Based on this, this article applies cloud computing and Internet of things technologies that have developed rapidly in recent years, and proposes to design a residential environment intelligent monitoring system based on cloud computing and Internet of things, and use Internet of things and sensor technologies to achieve target connection and communication. It then uses distributed computing, a cloud computing technology, to implement integrated, standardized management of this system for truly intelligent monitoring. In this article, we first gathered a large amount of information through literature search methods, systematically introduced cloud computing and Internet of Things technologies, and introduced two applications in environmental intelligent monitoring. Next, we propose a design experiment of a residential environment intelligent monitoring system based on cloud computing and the Internet of Things, and propose an overall concept of system design, system hardware and software design requirements, and device selection and comfort evaluation. And living environment data integration is introduced in detail. We then tested the performance of the system in a specific application of the system in a real residential environment, using data parameters collected at different points in time as experimental data. Finally, it is concluded that the fuzzy close fusion algorithm used in the experiment can obtain data parameter values that are in good agreement with the real values, and the error range is controlled within 0–0.01; the indoo- environment comfort is judged by 1 as the standard. $PMV>1$ indicates that the comfort level is excellent, and in the test experiment, each parameter value at 5 time points is all > 1, indicating that the indoor environment comfort level detected by the system is excellent.

Abstract:Recent study reported that users were shutting down their smart thermostat due to the poor performance in comfort and energy saving. This study aims to explore how automation in energy conservation system should be designed from a new perspective: comfort-energy trade-off. Scenario-based survey was conducted with 106 participants. Results showed that monitored control (high level of automation) was most satisfied in energy-saving-motivated control scenario and consensual control (low level of automation) was most satisfied in comfort-motivated control scenario. Users perceived the same sense of control in consensual control and monitored control as in manual control (no automation) in most scenarios. Thus, the results indicated that automatic environment control should not always be the same, but adaptively designed in accordance with specific comfort-energy trade-off situations, considering different control scenario, personal requirement and culture.
