Abstract:This paper explores the politically determined development objectives and the intrinsic logic of government intervention policies in east developed countries. It is argued that the distorted institutional structure in China and in many least developed countries, after the Second World War, can be largely explained by government adoption of inappropriate development strategies. Motivated by nation building, most least-developed countries, including the socialist countries, adopted a comparative advantage defying strategy to accelerate the growth of capital-intensive, advanced sectors in their countries. In the paper we also statistically measure the evolution of government development strategies and the economic institutions in China from 1950s to 1980s to show the co-existence and co- evolution of government adoption of comparative advantage defying strategy and the trinity system.

Abstract:Purpose In the past 70 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, China’s economic studies have been constantly centered on major issues such as national modernization, social economic development and the establishment, reform and improvement of socialist economic system. The paper aims to discuss this issue. Design/methodology/approach It has experienced a process of transition from the establishment of traditional Soviet’s paradigm of political economics to that of modern economics, during which drastic changes have been observed in various aspects of China’s economics, including research content, scope and methods. Findings Based on that, a discipline system of economics in line with international economics has been initially established. Currently, under the guidance of Marxism, scholars in China’s economics actively draw on the beneficial knowledge system and analytical methods from modern economics, emancipate their minds, seek truth from facts and constantly fortify confidence in the socialist path, theory, system and culture, continuously enhance the discourse power of China’s economics in global economic governance system, so as to push forward to the building of a theoretical system of socialist economics with Chinese Characteristics in the new era. Originality/value Economics is a discipline that studies resource allocation and human’s behavior of making a choice based on rationality. Emerged in the industrial revolution and developed in the exploration of a large-scale socialized mode of production and resource allocation system, this discipline has gradually become a broadly explanatory force in social sciences which profoundly affects the economic decision-making behaviors of the government and various economic entities.

Abstract:Research background: Ever since Deng Xiaoping introduced the reform and opening-up subpolicy in 1978, China has been able to carve out a distinct socialist economic development path with Chinese characteristics. This trajectory has been instrumental in propelling China towards unprecedented levels of economic growth, albeit accompanied by a host of complex and deeply ingrained challenges. As such, China must now take the onus of transforming its economic development paradigm to unlock new growth opportunities and overcome the persisting issues that have emerged in the wake of this rapid growth. Purpose of the article: The authors furnish a thorough and meticulous description of China's past and present voyage towards economic growth and evaluate the diverse impediments that China encounters in its quest for economic development. The authors' intention is to serve as an example for other developing nations to follow suit and learn from China's experience. Methods: This scholarly paper employs the literature review method to scrutinize the articles published in international and Chinese domestic academic journals that discuss China's economic development spanning from 1949 to 2023. Findings & Value added: The economy is undergoing a transition from expanding production capacity to improving production efficiency. China's economic growth is now driven by innovation and enhanced production efficiency, supported by the government's innovationdriven development strategy. While the government's future priorities include promoting the digital economy and sustainable development, the current focus is on stabilizing growth, employment, and prices amid the Covid-19 pandemic. To achieve this, the government must implement proactive fiscal policies and cautious monetary policies to ensure financial stability and encourage the dynamism of the micro economy through macroeconomic management.

Abstract:Activities over the past several years, however, clearly show that CE is emerging as an economic strategy rather than a purely environmental strategy. The major objective of the government is to promote the sustainable development of economy and society, while it also helps to achieve sustainable environmental protection. powers, increasing the wealth of the population and providing employment and business opportunities. The rapid economic growth, however, has engendered serious natural resource depletion and environmental pollution, and the continuing increase of population has exacerbated this situation greatly. Recent research has pointed out that growth of the gross domestic product (GDP) in China has significantly reduced the opportunities of future generations to enjoy natural and environmental resources.1 The central government promised in 2002 to build a prosperous society in a comprehensive way by 2020. By then, GDP per capita is anticipated to reach U.S. $3,000 and the total GDP to quadruple. Obviously, it is unrealistic for China to expect to realize this ambitious objective in terms of natural resource use if it continues its current development pathway, with population increasing to 1.45 billion in 2020 (Qu 2004), low productivity, and the absence of eco-efficiency.

Abstract:China has obtained great achievements in the area of poverty decrease since 1978 and made great contributions to the world. However, the speed of poverty reduction has slowed down since mid-1980s in spite of rapid economic growth; in addition, some new forms of poverty have arisen. The main reasons accounting for this paradox are the decrease of the quality of economic growth and the increase of the degree of income inequality. Then it is argued that new strategy for poverty reduction should be set up, including adjusting the national poverty line, enhancing the opportunities of the disadvantaged groups to participate in social activities, implementing macro-economic policies and regional developing policies in favor of poverty reduction, improving the abilities of the poor population, and so on.

Abstract:The concept of an externally oriented economy came up last year during preliminary discussions on the orientation of development of the four special economic zones, including Shenzhen, but the idea that the coastal areas should develop externally oriented economies as their development strategy is even more recent than that. Implementation of this strategy means a major "switching of tracks" for the Chinese economy necessitating reallocation of resources and adjustments in economic deployment, the purpose of which is to put China onto the world economic orbit. It is, therefore, a matter of far-reaching significance to the country's economic development now and in the future.

Abstract:Since Xi Jinping became leader of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, he has promoted the goal of realizing the "China dream," which centers on the effort to sustain rapid economic growth so that China can join or even surpass the rich countries of the world. Given the slowing of economic growth even before the 2020 coronavirus epidemic, debate has arisen about whether China can achieve this ambitious goal. This paper recounts the author's personal experiences thinking about the history of China's efforts since the Qing Dynasty to develop economically in order to ponder the issues in this debate. This overview leads to the conclusion that China's dramatic and surprising acceleration of economic growth in the decades after 1978 was driven by circumstances and forces that no longer work in China's favor, and that the nation now faces several serious problems that could make realization of Xi's China dream problematic.

Abstract:Since 1953,China's Five-Year Plan has experienced five stages: big push plan,semi-commanding plan,hybrid plan,directive planning and strategic planning.The contents transform from economic instruction plan to development strategic planning,from economic development to comprehensive one,the level from micro to macro,the focus from economic development to public services.We learn that the roles of market and planning both have pluses and minuses for development.They should be strengthened simultaneously,mutual complementary and mutual promotion.

Abstract:After 60 years' development and especially the fast growth in the past 30 years' opening and reform,China has arrived at a certain stage of its peaceful development. Rising with the tide of the times rather than against it is the most significant historical experience for China. The global financial crisis erupted in 2008 has brought about both unprecedented challenges and historical opportunities for China to start a new chapter of its peaceful development story. China now is in a comparatively upper-hand position due to its advantages in economic growth,the accelerated process of multipolarization,the growing international influences and the positive change of world views towards China. It is time for China to shift its strategy from tide-surfing to tide-making in lifting its economic growth,strategic position,international influence,and national image. While "keeping a low profile," China needs to make more efforts in "doing something," with its strategic focus gradually moving from winning short-term gains towards keeping long-term advantages.

Abstract:Since the promulgation of China's reform and opening-up sub-policy, China has created a socialist economic development path with Chinese characteristics in terms of economic development. During this period, China has experienced rapid economic growth, and deep-seated conflicts have come to the fore simultaneously. Therefore, China must transform its economic development to gain more growth opportunities. And in this paper, the author uses the literature review method to review the articles (international and domestic academic journals) related to China's economic development from 1949 to 2023, describe the current economic development in China, and analyze the opportunities and challenges that China faces in terms of economic development. The Chinese government focuses on innovation-driven development of science and technology, intending to achieve high-quality development of the Chinese economy rather than just rapid economic growth. Therefore, the author believes that the future direction of China's economic development will favor using government macroeconomic policy regulation to promote the digital economy's development vigorously. In addition, the government authorities will also pay more attention to sustainable development.

Abstract:During the past thirty years,China has attracted world-wide attention through its opening up,its utilization of two markets and two kinds of resources,and the way it has raised the efficiency of resource allocation,increased employment and economic growth,and promoted the progress of reform.After three decades of reform and opening-up and sustained growth,there has been a marked increase in China's economic aggregate and per capita income as well as a marked improvement in the country's comparative advantage in the international division of labor and in the external environment.A number of new features can be seen in China's economic development and its external economic relations and trade.China is entering a new stage of development.We should fully understand the changes in our own circumstances and the latest developments in globalization,become actively involved in global economic affairs,and elevate total factor productivity through global allocation of resources.Through expanding communication and cooperation,we should promote the integration of interests,deal with global economic and social difficulties jointly with other countries,and create and preserve an external environment which corresponds with China's fundamental and long-term interests.

Abstract:This paper provides an in-depth analysis on China's transition and development path.So far,China's e- conomic reform maintains the pre-reform rural-urban segmentation,economic decentralization and relational gov- ernance,albeit to a different extent.The associated political and social structure are conducive to capital accu- mulation,getting incentive right and contractual enforcement in the early stage of development,while they incur some costs such as increasingly widening income gaps,which have some negative effects on economic growth, poverty-reduction and social mobility,posing great challenges for sustainable and harmonious development. Hence,before the costs come to a threshold,China should make some corresponding gradual changes in politi- cal and social structure,leading to a unique China development model.

Abstract:This paper comprehensively reviews China's openness since 1978 from three aspects: trade, foreign investment and global production sharing. We point out that the economic development of China is now standing at a historic turning point. Specifically, economic changes in China are discussed from four dimensions: (i) from China being a world assembly line to a world manufacturing powerhouse; (ii) from China being a world capital receiver to a world investor; (iii) from China being a world factory to a world market; and (iv) from the situation of made in China to innovated in China. At the same time, the global economic system has also reached a turning point. A North America-Europe-Asia tri-polar system has formed, in which the USA, Germany and China, respectively, serve as the regional core economies.

Abstract:To examine the directions and developmental process of China's socialist construction at a time when the Chinese economy is growing rapidly despite the current world economic crisis is an act of no ordinary significance.Broadly speaking,China's sixty years of socialist construction can be divided into two phases:the first thirty years from 1949 to 1979 and the second thirty from 1979 to 2009.The first thirty years of China's socialist revolution and construction laid a solid foundation for the reform and opening up of the next thirty years,a period in which China's continued exploration of new directions led to spectacular achievements.History teaches us that the linchpin of building socialism is not whether you have a detailed blueprint for socialism,but whether you have a grand vision for understanding socialism and the courage to direct socialist construction.Although China today faces many problems and even grave challenges,we will open up an ever wider path for socialism with Chinese characteristics so long as our country adheres to the direction of socialism.

Abstract:China’s path is conceived as a transition from an economically underdeveloped and semi-colonised country of the Global South into a modern socialist country in a multipolar world where successive steps (modes of regulation) were shaped by China’s external environment (uneven and combined development) and a succession of contradictions and crises encountered along the way. Three phases are examined: a turbulent phase of socialist construction in a context of capital shortage and US embargoes; a phase of reform and opening up in an era of neoliberal globalisation, whose early roots lay in the early 1970s’ rapprochement with the US; and a New Era dating from 2017. In each phase, crises and contradictions saw waves of reform, involving successive joint transformations of economic structures and institutions, while each phase was anticipated in the years that preceded it, so opening up started in the early 1970s with the rapprochement with the US, and aspects of the New Era concern with innovation, green development, common prosperity and an equitable global order started to emerge earlier.
Development Strategy, Urbanization and the Rural-urban Income Disparity in China

Abstract:This study takes a perspective from governmental development strategy to examine the causes for the underdevelopment of Chinese urbanization and the rising inequality in rural-urban income. The results show that the governmental strategies that aim to encourage the prior development of capital-intensive sectors have led to a relative decrease in the employment demand in urban sectors, which in turn retards the urbanization course, bans the effective migration of rural residents into cities, and increases the rural-urban income disparity. Our study uses the Technology Choice Index (TCI) as a measure of the extent of governmental policy support for capital-intensive sectors, and employs the provincial panel data in 1978-2008 to test the theoretical hypothesis. The study also reveals a U-shaped tendency of Chinese rural-urban income disparity in the course of economic development.

Abstract:Under the general trend of economic globalization and regional economic integration, all countries in the world regard opening up as a strategic choice to promote economic and social development, international economic and trade exchanges continue to deepen, and economic and trade ties between countries in the world are increasingly strengthened. In the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" and even longer, China has entered a critical period of promoting the construction of a well-off society in an all-round way, a period of reform and opening up, and a period of transformation of open economic development. The open economic system should adhere to the combination of introduction and going out, stimulate the potential of enterprises to invest abroad, and have the courage and at allocating resources and opening up markets on a global scale. It is necessary to speed up the transition from a big trading country to a trade power, consolidate the traditional advantages of foreign trade, cultivate new advantages in competition, expand the space for the development of foreign trade, and actively imports. It is necessary to establish strategic thinking and a global vision, stand on the high plane of the interconnection of the two overall situations at home and abroad, examine the development of China and the world, and continuously push forward China's cause of opening up to the outside world. As an important functional sector of China and a latecomer region for economic and social development, rural areas are facing higher requirements and challenges for economic and social development. Since the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, in the context of the new era, this paper will focus on the study of open economy in rural areas of China (taking Songzi City, Hubei Province as an example). Comprehensively using methods such as experience summary and comparative analysis, we will study the development of an open economy in rural areas, and on the basis of existing research, we will strive to make some innovative attempts in order to provide certain decision-making references for the construction of economic and social development strategies in rural areas.
