Abstract:To clarify the evolution of lamellar phases in the initial microstructure of the Mg-9Gd-0.8Al alloy during the extrusion process and the effect of lamellar phases on the dynamic recrystallization of the extruded Mg alloy, the solid solution treated Mg-9Gd-0.8Al (SS10) alloy, was extruded at different temperatures (380, 400, and 450 °C). With the extrusion temperature increasing, the average size of dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains and the second phases decreases firstly and then increases. However, the volume fraction of DRXed grains shows an opposite trend, while the amount of the second phases consistently decreases. The as-extruded SS10 alloy demonstrates superior mechanical properties when extruded at 400 °C, with a yield strength (YS) of 240 MPa, ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of 298 MPa, and elongation (EL) of 19.3%. The alloy achieves enhanced strength through grain boundary strengthening, dislocation strengthening, and Orowan strengthening. Moreover, the presence of DRXed grains with a weak texture plays a significant role in the improvement of the ductility of the alloy.

Abstract:Through carrying out the high-temperature tensile experiments on an as-extruded Mg-11wt%Y alloy at 350 degrees C, 400 degrees C, 450 degrees C, 500 degrees C and 550 degrees C, the mechanical behavior and fracture mechanisms at elevated temperatures are investigated and compared. Tensile results show that with the increase of temperature, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength of the alloy increase at first and then decrease, while that the elongation ratio decreases firstly and then increases. For the sample being tested at 350 degrees C, the values of yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and the elongation ratio are 188 MPa, 266 MPa and 11%, respectively. At 400 degrees C, the yield strength and ultimate tensile strength reach the maximum values of, respectively, 198 MPa and 277 MPa, but the elongation ratio is the lowest and its value is only 8%. When the applied temperature is increased to 550 degrees C, the values of yield strength and ultimate tensile strength, respectively, decrease to 140 MPa and 192 MPa and the elongation ratio increases to 38%. Failure analysis demonstrates that the fracture surfaces of different samples are mainly composed of plastic dimples and exhibit the typical characteristic of ductile fracture. The observation to the fracture side surfaces indicates that at the temperatures of 350 degrees C and 400 degrees C, microcracks mainly initiate in the interior of Mg24Y5 particles. When the temperatures are 450 degrees C, 500 degrees C and 550 degrees C, the cracks preferentially initiate at the Mg24Y5/alpha-Mg interfaces.

Abstract:To ensure that Al alloys are being served as the high-temperature structural components for applications in aerospace and transportation, it is necessary to investigate their high-temperature mechanical behavior and failure mechanism. In this paper, the mechanical behavior of the as-extruded Al-5Zn-2Mg-0.3Cu (in wt.%) alloy was studied and compared under different high-temperature tensile-testing conditions. It was found that the yield strength and the ultimate tensile strength of the alloy gradually decreased with the increase in temperature, but its elongation ratio showed a slightly increasing trend. Failure analysis demonstrated that there were a lot of ductile dimples on the fracture surfaces and that obvious necking occurred for the samples being tensile-tested at different temperatures. Surface observation revealed that the initiation of micro-cracks was mainly attributed to the self-cracking of the brittle phase particles. Moreover, when the testing temperature was between 450 °C and 550 °C, micro-cracks could also occur at the interface between phase particles and the Al matrix.

Abstract:The hot backward extrusion process of the Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr magnesium alloy was investigated by both numerical simulation and experiments. An axisymmetric 2D rigid-plastic finite element model (FEM) was established to simulate the material flow during the extrusion process. The shapes of the dies were optimized in order to avoid severe stress concentration and obtain uniform deformation of the workpiece. After hot extrusion, the microstructures of the alloys were obviously refined, and the secondary phases which included many long-period stacking order (LPSO) phases precipitated in the matrix. The optimal comprehensive mechanical properties of the alloy have been obtained after extrusion and ageing at 200°C for 48h with the ultimate tensile strength of 434MPa, tensile yield strength of 375MPa and elongation of 4.5%, respectively. The good mechanical properties were mainly attributed to the fine microstructures and numerous precipitates in the matrix.

Abstract:Mg alloy with the alloying elements of Zn, Al, Sn and Mn was designed, and hot extrusion was carried out under various extrusion speeds and temperatures. The microstructure was well characterized, and the mechanical properties as well as corrosion resistance were tested. The results showed that the high speed extrusion resulted in more second phase particles, an increase in fraction of dynamic recrystallized (DRXed) grains, and a weaker basal plane texture. Moreover, high extrusion temperature increased the number of second phases, grain size, and DRX degree, while decreased the strength of basal plane texture. The sample extruded under the speed of 10 mm/min and temperature of 300 °C exhibited the highest yield strength (YS) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS), and the best corrosion resistance. High extrusion temperature could reduce the strength, while increase the elongation (EL). The corrosion resistance was improved greatly by grain refinement, while it became worse by increasing the number of fine and dispersed second phase particles.

Abstract:The experiments of heat treatment,hot extrusion and hard drawing were employed to study their effects on the structure and mechanical properties of Mg-9Al-1.2Nd-0.45Y-0.7Zn magnesium alloy. The results indicate that the mechanical properties of the ingot are unstable and exhibit typical brittle failure. After heat treatment（693 K,24 h）,most β-Mg17Al12 phases decomposed into the α-Mg matrix and the distribution of Rare earths compounds remained the state of as-cast,which have little effects of the mechanical properties of the alloy. As the casting defects disappeared and the grain was refined after hot extruded,the mechanical properties of the alloy were drastically increased. By hard drawing,the ultimate tensile strength and the yield strength of the alloy were sharply increased while the elongation decreased rapidly. The failure of as-cast samples was mainly brittle fracture. After plastic deformation,the fracture patterns all exhibited ductile rupture features.

Abstract:As-cast Mg-7.5Gd-2.5Y-3.5Zn-0.9Ca-0.4Zr (wt%) alloy was indirectly extruded using different parameters. The microstructure, texture and mechanical properties of the as-extruded alloys were investigated. Hot extrusion effectively refines the microstructure and fragments the coarse phases in the as-cast alloy. The alloys extruded at 400°C exhibit bimodal microstructure comprising fine dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains with weak basal texture and coarse worked grains with strong basal fiber texture. DRX process is promoted by increasing extrusion ratio. Extrusion at high temperatures of 450°C and 500°C leads to complete DRX and weak basal fiber texture. In addition, DRXed grain growth occurs and an unusual texture with basal planes perpendicular to extrusion direction appears. The alloy extruded at 400°C and ratio of 10:1 shows the tensile yield strength of 345MPa, ultimate tensile strength of 405MPa and elongation to failure of 8.8%. The strength decreases but elongation increases with increasing extrusion ratio and temperature, while the strain hardening capacity is improved due to the higher concentration of solute atom dissolved in the matrix, fewer dislocations and larger DRXed grain size.

Abstract:The microstructure evolution, mechanical response and deformation mechanism of the extruded Mg2.5Nd-0.5Zn-0.5Zr alloy sheet by high-temperature (423-573 K) tensile were investigated. The results showed that the alloy exhibited excellent high-temperature mechanical properties at 523 K (extrusion direction (ED): ultimate tensile strength (UTS)~191.5 MPa, yield strength (YS)~154.5 MPa, elongation (EL) ~30.1%; transverse direction (TD): UTS~190.5 MPa, YS~148.2 MPa, EL~35.2%). The YS of ED and TD of the alloy decreased linearly, and the anisotropy of the alloy decreased gradually (from 0.9261 to 1.009) with the increase of tensile temperature, which was beneficial to the subsequent processing of the alloy. Moreover, the decreased anisotropy was the result of grain size, second phase particles size and texture state. The microstructure showed obvious deformed structures at 423 K and it was gradually replaced by dynamic recrystallization with an average grain size of 3.3-4.2 mu m and the texture strength weakened greatly (maximum pole density value reduced from 15.8 to 4.0) as the temperature increased to 573 K. Meanwhile, both the deformation models and the contributions of different deformation mechanisms at different tensile temperatures were roughly estimated. It was found that basal slip was always the main deformation mechanism at different tensile temperatures, but its contribution to deformation decreased with increased tensile temperatures (from 93.0% to 66.6%). With the increase of tensile temperature, the degree of prismatic slip (from 4.1% to 23.2%) and pyramidal slip (from 2.9% to 10.2%) in deformation gradually increased. (c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:In this study, extruded deformed billet and extruded rod of Mg–6Al–1Zn–1.1Sc (wt. %) alloy were characterized by optical microscopy (OM) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). The room temperature tensile properties and deformation behavior of extruded alloy were investigated using a universal testing machine and the visco-plastic self-consistent (VPSC) model. The results indicated that the coarse deformed grains (DGs) progressively disappeared and the degree of dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of the alloy increased as the sampling position approached the outlet of the extrusion die. In addition, the grain boundary strengthening induced by DRX increased the corresponding Vickers hardness. DRX mechanisms during extrusion included discontinuous DRX, continuous DRX, twin-induced DRX, and particle-stimulated nucleation (PSN). The EBSD-based in-grain misorientation axes (IGMA) analysis revealed that the slip modes within DGs were dominated by prismatic slip in the early stages of extrusion and by multiple slip modes in the later stages. The yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation of the extruded alloy were 172.4 MPa, 290.1 MPa, and 26.9%, respectively. The combination of grain boundary strengthening, texture strengthening, and secondary phase strengthening resulted in the high yield strength. The VPSC model well simulated the tensile deformation of the extruded alloy with (0001)//ED (extrusion direction) fiber texture. The superior plasticity of the extruded alloy was ascribed to the high Schmid factor (SF) of the non-basal slip and the activation of the non-basal slip facilitated by the reduction in the ratio of the critical resolved shear stress (CRSS) between the non-basal slip and the basal slip.

Abstract:Different extrusion temperatures (350 °C, 380 °C, 410 °C) were used to forward extrude the cast Mg-2.5Er-0.6Zr (wt.%) alloy. The effects of extrusion temperature on the microstructure, mechanical properties, deformation texture and extrusion deformation mechanism of Mg-2.5Er-0.6Zr alloy were studied by OM, SEM, room temperature tensile test, EBSD and IGMA analysis. The results show that the cast alloy has coarse grains and exhibits random texture characteristics. After extrusion, the alloy underwent dynamic recrystallization (DRX), and the equiaxed grains were refined, forming a special rare earth texture, and the mechanical properties of the alloy were greatly improved. In the temperature range of 380 °C–410 °C, with the increase of extrusion temperature, the alloy grain coarsing, strength and plasticity gradually decrease, but it is still much higher than the cast alloy. Under the combined influence of fine grain strengthening, texture weakening and diversified plastic deformation modes, the comprehensive mechanical properties of extruded Mg-2.5Er-0.6Zr alloy are the best at 380 °C, and its ultimate tensile strength, tensile yield strength and elongation are 218.7 MPa, 184.2 MPa and 44.1%, respectively.

Abstract:In order to investigate the effect of extrusion on Mg-4Zn-1Y alloy, microstructure and mechanical properties were analyzed by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS) and tensile testing. The results indicated that the microstructure was obviously refined by extrusion and dynamic recrystallization. The second phases were dynamic precipitated and distributed more dispersively through extrusion. W-Phases (Mg3Zn3Y2) were twisted and broken, while I-Phases (Mg3Zn6Y) were spheroidized by deformation. Twin bands were formed to achieve the large deformation and hinder the slip of dislocations effectively to improve tensile properties. The tensile strength and elongation of extruded Mg-4Zn-1Y alloy were 254.94 MPa and 17.9% respectively which were improved greatly compared with those of as-cast alloy. The strengthening mechanisms of the extruded alloy were mainly fine-grain strengthening and distortion strengthening.
Analysis of Abnormal Texture Formation and Strengthening Mechanism in an Extruded Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr Alloy

Abstract:A Mg-Gd-Y-Zn-Zr magnesium alloy with different initial states was extruded under different extrusion parameters. The effect of solution treatment and extrusion parameters on the microstructure, texture and mechanical properties were analyzed in detail, and the abnormal texture formation and strengthening mechanism was revealed. When extruded at low temperature and small extrusion ratio, the bimodal microstructure consisting of fine dynamically recrystallized grains and coarse deformed grains occurred both in the as-cast alloy and solution-treated alloy. When the extrusion temperature and extrusion ratio were increased, the amount and size of dynamically recrystallized grains increased and the grain size of the solution-treated alloy showed higher growth rate. Furthermore, an abnormal texture with <0001> parallel with extrusion direction developed due to the occurrence of non-basal slip and continuous dynamic recrystallization. This could be enhanced by solution treatment, high temperature, and large extrusion ratio. Both the as-cast alloy and solution-treated alloy exhibited the highest tensile strength after extrusion at 300 °C with an extrusion ratio of 9. Grain refinement was the main strengthening mechanism utilized in both the as-cast alloy and the solution-treated alloy. Work hardening played an important role in the sample extruded at low temperature and small extrusion ratio, with the highest contribution of about 33 MPa after extrusion at 300 °C with an extrusion ratio of 9. Texture strengthening contributed more in the sample extruded at high temperature and large extrusion ratio, but no more than 24.1 MPa. Solution strengthening was another strengthening mechanism in the extruded as-cast alloy, especially at high temperature and large extrusion ratio (no more than 9 MPa).

Abstract:The microstructures and mechanical properties of the extruded Mg-9Gd-4Y-0.6Zr-T5 at temperatures between 250℃ and 400℃ were investigated.The results show that this alloy has outstanding mechanical properties and high heat-resistance,and its mechanical properties are markedly better than those of WE54.The tensile strength of this alloy at 250,300,350 and 400℃ are 348,262,150 and 62MPa,respectively.In tensile test at 400℃,the sample shows a coarse-grained superplasticity,which is not reported,and a great deal of recrystallized grains are found on grain boundaries and a lot of twins occur within the grains.

Abstract:Through investigating the tension-tension fatigue behavior of an as-extruded Mg-6.2 wt.％Zn-0.6 wt.％Zr(ZK60)alloy,it revealed that the determined fatigue strength at 107 cycles was quite sensitive to the grain structure.Among them,the fine grain structure had the highest fatigue strength of 130 MPa,whereas the typical"bi-modal"grain structure had the lowest fatigue strength of 110 MPa.Failure analysis demon-strated that for the fine grain structure,fatigue cracks preferentially nucleated at grain boundaries.For the"bi-modal"and coarse grain structures,the fatigue crack initiation was dominated by the cracking along slip bands.

Abstract:The microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of the Mg-6Gd-1Zn-0.5Zr (wt%) alloy during heat treatment and composite extrusion were studied in this work. The (Mg, Zn) 3 Gd phase and a small amount of 14 H long-period stacking ordered (LPSO) phase formed in the cast alloy, and more lamellar 14H-LPSO phases formed in the alloy during homogenization treatment. The bimodal grain structure composed of coarse deformed microstructure and fine dynamic recrystallization (DRX) grains formed in the alloy after extrusion. The γ′ phase and β ́ phase precipitated after the extrusion process and after the solution and aging treatment, respectively. The kinking of the lamellar 14H-LPSO phase occurred during the extrusion process. DRX grains formed in the alloy during extrusion process through continuous dynamic recrystallization (CDRX), particle stimulated nucleation (PSN), and kinking-assisted DRX. The yield strength, tensile strength and elongation of the extruded alloy were 227 MPa, 320 MPa, and 20.68 %, respectively. The strength and elongation of the extruded alloy are enhanced by the strengthening effect from the bimodal structure, kinking of the LPSO phase, and LPSO phase. The tensile properties of the alloy decreased after the solution and aging treatment. The bimodal structure and kinking of the LPSO phase disappeared after the solution and aging treatment.

Abstract:The as-cast Mg - 5.25 wt.% Zn - 0.6 wt.% Ca alloy was extruded at different extrusion temperatures (270, 300, and 330 °C). The extrusion temperature has a significant effect on the grain size, texture and mechanical properties of the Mg-Zn-Ca alloy. Upon extrusion, the as-cast coarse grains underwent pronounced grain refinement and the second phases were broken up and formed stringers in the extrusion direction. With the decreasing extrusion temperature to 270 °C, the grain size of the alloy was refined to about 1.5 μm, basal texture became stronger, which led to the higher tensile strength and moderate elongation to failure.

Abstract:A high strength and toughness extruded Mg-Zn-Y alloy based on quasicrystal-strengthening has been studied. The effect of extrusion and heat treatment on the microstructures and mechanical properties of Mg-Zn-Y alloy were studied by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and tensile testing. The experimental results indicated that the coarse dendrite crystals were broken through the hot extrusion, and dynamic recrystallization appeared during the hot extrusion, which obviously refined the hot-extruded microstructure to the average grain size about 20μm. A large amount of strengthening phases such as Mg3Zn6Y(I-Phase), Mg12ZnY(X-Phase) and MgZn2, which were massive, grainy and clavate, dispersedly precipitated from the matrix along grain boundary during ageing treatment at 225 after extrusion, and made the sliding of grain boundaries restrained, which resulted in an enhancement for mechanical properties to a great extent. At the same time, the tensile strength and yield strength increased after ageing treatment. After ageing treatment of 225×24h, the highest tensile strength and yield strength of the extruded Mg-Zn-Y alloy were obtained: σb=506.7MPa, σ0.2=373.5MPa, which were increased by 104.8% and 120.4%, respectively, compared with the extruded Mg-Zn-Y alloy, however the elongation decreased to 16.52%.

Abstract:Microstructures and mechanical properties of a high-strength extruded Mg-3.5Sm-0.6Zn-0.5Zr alloy were thoroughly investigated. The results indicate that the dominant intermetallic phase in both as-cast and extruded samples is not the widely reported Mg41Sm5 phase but Mg3Sm phase. After extrusion, the microstructures are composed of fine equiaxed dynamically recrystallized (DRXed) grains, coarse elongated unDRXed grains with ultrafine sub-grains, disintegrated intermetallic particles, and numerous small dynamically precipitated particles. Also, there are amounts of particularly < a + c > dislocations in the Mg matrix after extrusion. Finally, numerous nano-scale plate β′ particles and lamellae β″ particles homogeneously precipitated in the matrix during artificial aging treatments. Therefore, the studied alloy exhibits very high ultimate tensile strength and yield strength, whose maximum values at room temperature are approximately 427MPa and 416MPa, respectively, much greater than most conventional Mg–RE based alloys with comparative or even much higher RE additions.
Microstructure, Tensile Properties and Work Hardening Behavior of an Extruded Mg–Zn–Ca–Mn Magnesium Alloy

Abstract:A new Mg-2.2 wt% Zn alloy containing 1.8 wt% Ca and 0.5 wt% Mn has been developed and subjected to extrusion under different extrusion parameters. The finest (~ 0.48 μm) recrystallized grain structures, containing both nano-sized MgZn2 precipitates and α-Mn nanoparticles, were obtained in the alloy extruded at 270 °C/0.01 mm s−1. In this alloy, the deformed coarse-grain region possessed a much stronger texture intensity (~ 32.49 mud) relative to the recrystallized fine-grain region (~ 13.99 mud). A positive work hardening rate in the third stage of work hardening curve was also evident in the alloy extruded at 270 °C, which was related to the sharp basal texture and which provided insufficient active slip systems. The high work hardening rate in the fourth stage contributed to the high ductility extruded at 270 °C/1 mm s−1. This alloy exhibited a weak texture, and the examination of fracture surface revealed highly dimpled surfaces. The optimum tensile strength was achieved in the alloy extruded at 270 °C/0.01 mm s−1, and the yield strength, ultimate tensile strength and elongation to failure were ~ 364.1 MPa, ~ 394.5 MPa and ~ 7.2%, respectively. Fine grain strengthening from the recrystallized fine-grain region played the greatest role in the strength increment of this alloy compared with Orowan strengthening and dislocation strengthening in the deformed coarse-grain regions.

Abstract:Hot extrusion was performed on as-cast Mg−3Zn−1Y−1Mn alloy to further improve the mechanical properties and investigate its microstructure evolution and deformation mechanism at different thermal deformation temperatures. The experimental results suggested that the alloy at the extrusion temperature of 330 °C had the optimal mechanical properties, and the tensile strength and elongation of the alloy were 270 MPa and 16.8%, respectively. The strength improvement of the as-extruded alloy primarily arose from three aspects, including fine-grain strengthening due to dynamic re-crystallization (DRX), dislocation strengthening not offset by DRX, and second phase strengthening. Continuous dynamic re-crystallization (CDRX) and dynamic recovery (DRV) occurred simultaneously at the extrusion temperature of 300 °C. The discontinuous dynamic re-crystallization (DDRX) occurred at the extrusion temperature of 330 and 360 °C. However, the contribution of {0001} basal plane slip, {1010} prismatic type I and {1120} prismatic type II slips to plastic deformation was significantly affected by the extrusion temperature. The {1120} prismatic type II slip was found to be the most difficult one to initiate among the three slip systems.
