Abstract:BackgroundLatent Heat Thermal Energy Storage (LHTES) represents a highly effective technology for optimizing energy utilization. To enhance the thermal efficiency of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) in constrained environments, the Lattice Boltzmann Method (LBM) is employed to simulate the melting process of PCMs in a two-dimensional square LHTES unit.MethodsIt rigorously examines the formation of convective circulations under various numbers of heating heat flow partitions (0 to 3). Furthermore, the research explores the influence of Rayleigh number (104 to 106), Prandtl number (3 to 9), and Stefan number (1 to 7) on the thermal performance of PCMs.Significant FindingsThe results demonstrate that compared to the uniform heating scenario, a segmented heat flux configuration of n=1 significantly decreases the complete melting temperature by up to 9.14% at a Rayleigh number of 104. However, division schemes with n=2 and n=3 resulted in interactions and mutual erosion among eddies, which may reduce the effectiveness of heat transfer optimization. Under various heat flux configurations, increasing the Rayleigh number from 104 to 106 results in a 17.4% to 19.4% acceleration of the melting process. Elevating the Prandtl number from 3 to 9 leads to a 0.35% to 0.77% increase in the rate of melting. Enhancing the Stefan number from 1 to 7 accelerates the melting process by 1.36% to 8.92%. However, the increase of Ra, Pr and Ste will diminishes the optimization effect of the divided sections. The results presented in this paper are beneficial for the advancement of thermal energy storage techniques.
