Abstract:A smart mattress based on optical fiber Mach-zender interferometer (OF-MZI) is designed for noninvasive and continuous monitoring of human vital signs. Through arranging the sensing fiber between two elastic covering layers with sandwich structure, the mattress was sensitive to the respiration and heartbeat induced micro-pressure. In the processing terminal, the waveforms of vital signs were demodulated by 3 * 3 coupler based differentiate and cross-multiplying method, and then four characteristic indicators including the heart rate, heartbeat amplitude, respiration rate, and respiration amplitude were respectively extracted through feature extraction algorithm, for evaluating the human health condition. Clinical experimental results of eighteen subjects indicate that the mattress system could not only distinguish the activity states of no body, on bed, body movement and off bed, but also contribute to clinical diagnosis of bradycardia, tachycardia, polypnea and apnoea. By adopting Bland-Altman analysis method, good reproducibility and accuracy were confirmed, where the max errors of heart rate and respiration rate are respectively 2 bpm and 1 bpm. Moreover, the responses at different positions of the mattress are identical and the continuous monitoring results in one day are consistent with daily change of vital signs, which proves that the fiber optic mattress has good reliability and stability. Beneficial from high-sensitivity, multiple parameters, long-term continuous monitoring, high comfortability and low cost, the mattress is promising in the early detection and prevention of cardiac and respiratory diseases as a household medical device.

Abstract:A novel wearable health monitoring system with multi-parameters and its applications for long term monitoring are presented in this paper. The system provides continuous monitoring of the user's electrocardiogram (ECG), respiratory status and activity, as well as the local temperature. A belt-type data acquisition and communication module worn around the chest includes ECG and respiratory module ADS1292R, six axis motion sensor MPU6050, high precision digital temperature sensor Tsic506 and bluetooth 4.0 module CC2541. The collected data is sent to the mobile device via bluetooth and the mobile device gives a heart health index of measuring the body status which includes heart rate, QRS wave, and ST segment. A remote interactive way is constructed by the mobile device communicating with the customer management center via WIFI.

Abstract:In this study, a stretchable polymer optical fiber with a sandwich structure was proposed, which integrated a silicone tube filled with polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with two common commercial polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) optical fiber. By integrating the stretchable polymer optical fiber into the designed sleep-monitoring mattress, the pressure sensitivity of the mattress to measure human respiratory rate, heart rate, and body motion information is improved. The weak respiratory and heartbeat signals were amplified by an amplifier circuit and the respiratory and heart rates were obtained by an algorithm. The experimental results indicated that the mattress can monitor respiratory rate and heart rate values in different positions as well as body movement information and can differentiate between three different behavioral states, including not on the bed, lying, and moving on the bed. In addition, clinical trials were conducted on 10 subjects, and the results were analyzed using the Bland-Altman analysis method, confirming the accuracy of the mattress, with maximum errors of less than 1 breath per minute and 2 beats per minute for respiration and heartbeat respectively. In addition, the mattress's reliability and stability were verified through continuous sleep monitoring at various times of day. The mattress has the advantages of low cost, softness, comfort, and high sensitivity, and is suitable as a home medical device for long-term continuous monitoring of respiratory and heart rates during sleep.

Abstract:We present a new fibre optic breathing/movement sensor for in-bed non-intrusive monitoring. The light is modulated through microbending effect during breathing/body movement. The sensing system consists of optical transmitter, optical receiver, a sensor sheet, and a computer. An algorithm was developed to extract body movement signals and report breathing rate and information on body movement of bedded person. The breathing rate measurement system shows an accuracy of +/-1 breath, which has been successfully demonstrated in field trial (FusionWorld).

Abstract:A smart cushion based on single-mode-fiber-multimode-fiber-single-mode-fiber (SMS) with core-offset splicing, which can simultaneously realize human vital signs monitoring and activity monitoring, is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The SMS structure is sandwiched between a piece of fiberglass mesh and a polyvinyl chloride ( PVC) layer and then embedded in a common home or office cushion, which is the component of the proposed cushion. When people sit on the cushion placed on a chair, micro-strain induced by human activity including respiration, heartbeat and body movement will change the output light intensity of the fiber structure. By signal processing algorithms including filtering, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and feature extraction, the respiration rate (RR) and heartbeat rate (HR) can be obtained and human activity state on the cushion including nobody state, movement state and normal state can be judged. Furthermore, the performances of two memory foam cushions with different thicknesses are compared and proven to be both available. Such a smart portable cushion can realize real-time, noninvasive and highly sensitive monitoring of vital signs and activities within the accuracy of one second, especially for the elderly in nursing homes and office workers.

Abstract:Good sleep is considered to be the cornerstone for maintaining both physical and mental health. However, nearly one billion people worldwide suffer from various sleep disorders. To date, polysomnography (PSG) is the most commonly used sleep-monitoring technology,however, it is complex, intrusive, expensive and uncomfortable. Unfortunately, present noninvasive monitoring technologies cannot simultaneously achieve high sensitivity, multi-parameter monitoring and comfort. Here, we present a single-layered, ultra-soft, smart textile for all-around physiological parameters monitoring and healthcare during sleep. With a high-pressure sensitivity of 10.79 mV/Pa, a wide working frequency bandwidth from 0 Hz to 40 Hz, good stability, and decent washability, the single-layered ultra-soft smart textile is simultaneously capable of real-time detection and tracking of dynamic changes in sleep posture, and subtle respiration and ballistocardiograph (BCG) monitoring. Using the set of patient generated health data, an obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) monitoring and intervention system was also developed to improve the sleep quality and prevent sudden death during sleep. This work is expected to pave a new and practical pathway for physiological monitoring during sleep.

Abstract:A smart monitoring system based on fiber-optic interferometers using multi-core fiber (MCF) is presented in this paper. Interference among cores in the seven-core fiber (SCF) was introduced by using multi-mode fiber (MMF) coupling and experimental setup was designed to collect the data of user on bed for processing. With optimized algorithm, three body activities, including on the bed, off the bed and body movement, can be identified successfully. For further processing on collected data, respiration of the user can also be obtained. The smart monitor is contactless and non-invasive which is user-friendly and secure.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a new method to monitor heart rate using fiber optic microbending based sensor for in-bed non-intrusive monitoring. The sensing system consists of transmitter, receiver, sensor mat, National Instrument (NI) data acquisition (DAQ) card and a computer for signal processing. The sensor mat is embedded inside a commercial pillow. The heart rate measurement system shows an accuracy of +/-2 beats, which has been successfully demonstrated in a field trial. The key technological advantage of our system is its ability to measure heart rate with no preparation and minimal compliance by the patient.

Abstract:Heart rate variability (HRV) reflects the regulating effect of autonomic nerve on cardiovascular functions and is strongly influenced by respiratory rhythm. For more convenient monitoring physiological or pathological information about heart and autonomic nerves during sleep than conventional systems, a smart mattress that could measure electrocardiogram (ECG) and respiratory signals through clothes was designed. The system mainly consists of three electrodes that are made of flexible silver fiber conductive fabric, a signal preprocessing module and a user interface. To reduce the effect of surrounding electromagnetic radiation on the electrodes, two equipotential shielding layers are placed under the two active electrodes, respectively. To verify the proposed system, experiments in four sleeping postures (supine, left lateral, right lateral, and prone) were carried out. The results showed that the proposed system could successfully measure ECG signals and extract respiratory signals from them in all sleeping postures. Finally, to study respiratory sinus arrhythmia during sleep, an experiment was conducted to measure ECG and respiratory signals of 7 subjects under unconstrained sleep over night. Then, root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD) and peak-valley respiratory sinus arrhythmia (pvRSA) that can reflect the vagus nerve tension were calculated. The results showed that all subjects had varying degrees of respiratory sinus arrhythmia, with the mean and standard deviation of 176±80ms and 288±126ms, forthe RMSSD and the pvRSA respectively.The RMSSD and the pvRSA of the subject with most obvious arrhythmia were 346ms and 552ms respectively. The results also indicate the potential application of the proposed system in detecting sleep diseases such as sleep apnea.

Abstract:Objective To design a wearable physiological monitoring system for acquiring and monitor-ing vital signs non-intrusively and concurrently.Methods All bio-sensors were embedded in an elastic shirt for detecting physiological parameters with wearable technology.A patented respiratory inductive plethysmography technology was used to measure respiratory function,two sensors were woven into the jerkin around the patient's chest and abdomen.A three-lead,single channel ECG measures heart rate,and a three-axis accelerometer records posture and activity level.An NTC thermometer embedded in the shirt measures the body temperature.Results An elastic jerkin with embedded sensors that collect and continuously monitor respiration,cardiac,temperature,posture and activity signals was fabricated.Conclusion This wearable physiological monitoring system can record multiple parameters non-intrusively and concurrently.It can act as an useful platform for further researches.

Abstract:In recent years, due to increased attention of individual physical health condition, the demand on portable multi-vital signs monitoring devices has shown an explosive growth. This work designed a portable, multi-vital signs monitoring system, consisting of chest unit and wrist unit, with size of 32 mm x 32 mm and diameter of 30 mm, respectively. The designed system is capable of transmitting measured electrocardiograph (ECG), pulse wave and body temperature signal to the mobile devices wirelessly by Bluetooth low energy (BLE) technique. The heart rate, pulse oximetry (SpO(2)) and respiratory rate are extracted through time domain algorithm. The chest and wrist units can continuously monitor body vital signs for more than 12 and 24 hours, respectively. Besides, the experiment results reveal that the chest unit is able to monitor patients with heart rate abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation and premature beats. The typical heart diseases can be detected in real-time. Meanwhile, the wrist unit clearly detects the changes of the physical parameters of the subjects under different physiological conditions. The accuracy of the designed system is consistent with that of the commercial medical instrument counterpart, with further advantages of compact, portable and patient-friendly natures.

Abstract:Unobtrusive cardiorespiratory monitoring in the period of sleep could facilitate researchers for sleep analysis and sleep disorders diagnosis. With the recent advancement of biomedical health informatics, it is possible to monitor individual's sleep disorders through cardiovascular parameters. This paper proposes a polyvinylidene fluoride ( PVDF) sensor based system for unobtrusive measurements of respiration and heartbeat while sleeping; the sensing unit is deployed on the mattress below the back area of the subject. The PVDF sensor generates the sensory activations due to pulsatile pressure change caused by respiratory and heartbeat movement. To extract and separate the heartbeat and respiration accurately, the method singular spectrum analysis (SSA) was applied while the empirical mode decomposition (EMD) and wavelet analysis methods were used for comparison. Experiments are conducted on two healthy subjects to obtain the respiratory rate and heart rate. To verify and compare the performance of the proposed system, the polysomnography (PSG) system was used to record the thorax effort signal and electrocardiography (ECG) as the gold standard for extracting the respiratory rate and heart rate respectively. The average error rate (AER) of respiratory rate extraction is noted 8.53%, with segmenting the data as 2 mins epochs. Meanwhile, the AERs of the heart rate are 8.01%, 8.80%, 8.55% by utilizing the SSA, EMD and wavelet methods respectively. Overall, the proposed system can obtain accurate respiration and heart rate detection. And the novelty lies in introducing a flexible PVDF sensor which can be combined with the sleep mat for cardiorespiratory signal monitoring in home environment; and new SSA algorithm to extract respiration and heart rates. The experimental results are promising which demonstrated that the proposed system satisfied the basic requirements for cardiorespiratory signal monitoring during sleep.

Abstract:In this paper, an unconstrained cardiorespiratory system for monitoring of ECG and respiration during sleep is presented. A novel active dry ECG electrode, which based on the conductive flexible and stretchable Ag NWs/PDMS composite material is designed to acquire the electrocardiographic potentials through the cloth. Meanwhile, a membrane pressure sensor is applied to obtain the respiratory signal, which can avoid the intervention in the sleep process. Combining the novel active ECG electrode and the membrane pressure sensor, the followed signal acquisition circuit is designed to monitor the ECG and respiratory signals simultaneously without fixing any external sensor to the human body. To verify the performance of the proposed system, a comprehensive test protocol is presented. Firstly, we characterized the electrical properties and the signal sensing capability of the proposed sensor. Furthermore, the performance of the entire system is assessed to verify the effects caused by different clothing materials and sleep postures to the ECG signal and the respiratory signal acquisition. The average Pearson correlation coefficient of the RR interval that extracted from the ECG signal obtained by the proposed system and the commercial PSG device can reach over 0.9 of different clothes and postures. As for the respiration acquisition, the accuracy of the respiration rate in different postures can reach 95% during the 2 hours monitoring process. The experimental results are promising, which demonstrate that the proposed system can achieve favorable signal quality and satisfy the basic requirements of the cardiorespiratory monitoring during sleep. Moreover, the proposed system can be extended to the office environment to monitor the health status of the individual.

Abstract:Long-term monitoring of respiratory rate (RR) is of great importance in people suffering from sleep-related breathing disorders (SBDs). Instrumented mattresses are gaining the attention of several research groups to monitor this vital sign. Among the existing sensing techniques, fiber Bragg grating sensors (FBGs) show promise in this arena. In this article, we presented a novel FBG-based smart mattress to monitor RR over time. The proposed measuring system consisted of 13 sensing elements (SEs) based on FBGs encapsulated in soft biocompatible rubber, totally embedded in multiple silicone layers. Compactness, robustness, and user comfort are the main advantages of our solution. The mattress size and the arrangement of the 13 SEs were chosen to allow monitoring subjects with different anthropometric parameters and taking up different sleeping postures. Before the overall system integration, each SE was subjected to static and dynamic metrological characterization, a process often overlooked in fiber-optic-based mattresses. Results showed a mean sensitivity to force equal to 14 pm $\cdot \,\,\text{N}^{-1}$ and a mean percentage hysteresis error always lower than 18%. The feasibility assessment of the system in RR monitoring was carried out on five healthy volunteers taking up common sleeping postures (i.e., supine -S-, right side -RS-, left side -LS-, and prone -P-) under two breathing conditions (i.e., quiet breathing -QB-, and tachypnea -T-). RR estimation showed a mean absolute error (MAE) always lower than 0.65 breaths/min. The promising findings proved the capability of our smart mattress in monitoring RR over time, encouraging the investigation of its performance in real-world scenarios.

Abstract:To improve the unobtrusiveness and comfortableness of sleep monitoring, we proposed the design and implementation of a smart mat which utilized flexible pressure sensor array and printed electrodes to monitor physiological and behavioral data during sleep. With the proposed novel soft seven-layer structure, the smart mat system can measure pressure distribution images and calculate respiratory rate of subjects. The function of this system was realized with pressure acquisition circuit controlled by Arduino processor. Experiments for pressure distribution tests and respiratory rate measurements were carried out to validate the performance of the proposed system. The experimental results demonstrated that the smart mat could be a viable option for unobtrusive sleep monitoring in the future.
