Abstract:Mentha spicata is one of the most widely used aromatic plants worldwide, and the essential oil is its important product. However, its production has long been unable to meet market demand. Supplementation of the beneficial elements silicon and calcium provides the possibility to improve the yield and quality of M. spicata essential oil. To verify the effectiveness of either silicon or calcium in improving the yield and quality of the essential oil, the biomass, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content, chlorophyll fluorescence, nutrient element content, yield, chemical composition, odour, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of essential oil were measured. The results showed that silicon and calcium increased the yield of the essential oil, enhanced biomass, photosynthesis, increased chlorophyll content, improved chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, and increased the content of nutrient elements such as N, P, K and S of M. spicata. In addition, silicon and calcium alter the composition of the essential oil, increased the content of (+)-Carvone, D-Limonene and (E)-β-Ocimene. Meanwhile, the quality of essential oils has improved, including a sweet floral odour, and an enhanced antioxidant and antibacterial activity. These results indicate that silicon and calcium can regulate photosynthesis and nutrient absorption of M. spicata to increase its yield and change the content of component of its essential oil by regulating the synthesis of terpenoids to improve the quality of the essential oil. These findings provide a better understanding of how silicon and calcium improve the yield and quality of essential oil and can serve as a reference for the cultivation and management of M. spicata.
