Abstract:It is significant to develop low-cost and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) via electrochemical water splitting. Herein, we constructed the P-doped NiCo2S4 nanowire arrays on the carbon fiber paper (NiCo2S4-xPx/CFP) as a HER electrocatalyst in both acidic and alkaline media. Benefitted from P doping into NiCo2S4, the as-prepared NiCo2S4-xPx/CFP exhibits low HER overpotentials of 80 and 132 mV in acidic and alkaline media at the cathodic current density of 10 mA/cm2, respectively, which are far superior to counterparts of NiCo2S4 nanowire arrays on the carbon fiber paper (NiCo2S4/CFP). Meanwhile, the NiCo2S4-xPx/CFP presents excellent HER stability of 20 hours in acidic and alkaline media. From the results of density functional theory calculations, P doping can not only optimize the hydrogen adsorption energetics on each kind of atom sites of catalysts, but also strengthen the H2O molecule binding ability on catalyst surface for alkaline HER and favor kinetics of hydrogen adsorption and H2 formation on catalyst surface for acidic HER, eventually improving overall HER performances. The investigation of HER mechanism modulated by P doping in our work offers novel inspirations to develop highly efficient ternary metal sulfides for HER.

Coupling PtNi Ultrathin Nanowires with MXenes for Boosting Electrocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution in Both Acidic and Alkaline Solutions.

Abstract:Developing an efficient electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) working in both acidic and alkaline solutions is highly desirable, but still remains challenging. Here, Ptx Ni ultrathin nanowires (NWs) with tunable compositions (x = 1.42, 3.21, 5.67) are in situ grown on MXenes (Ti3 C2 nanosheets), serving as electrocatalysts toward HER. Such Ptx Ni@Ti3 C2 electrocatalysts exhibit excellent HER performance in both acidic and alkaline solutions, with the Pt3.21 Ni@Ti3 C2 being the best one. Specifically, Pt3.21 Ni@Ti3 C2 achieves record-breaking performance in terms of lowest overpotential (18.55 mV) and smallest Tafel slope (13.37 mV dec-1 ) for HER in acidic media to date. Theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that the coupling of MXenes with the NWs not only approaches the Gibbs free energy for hydrogen adsorption close to zero through the electron transfer between them in acidic media, but also provides additional active sites for water dissociation in alkaline solution, both of them being beneficial to the HER performance.

Abstract:Developing highly efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts is substantially important for high-performance water electrolyzers for "green hydrogen" production. Transition metal phosphides are promising HER catalyst candidates because of their intrinsically excellent conductivity and acid/alkali stability. In order to enhance their HER activity, one approach is to increase the density of active sites on the electrode surface through the design of the catalyst's micro- or nano-structures. However, the in situ formed catalysts on a nano-sized substrate are accompanied by the "nano-effect" of the substrate that may influence their phase/composition, thereby altering the catalytic activity, which has rarely been studied. In this work, we revealed that the phase composition of the NixCoP-CoP nanobristles can be modulated by controlling the solid-state nickel element diffusion from the nickel nanowire arrays (NNA). Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation confirmed that the obtained NiCoP-CoP heterostructure has a lower energy barrier for water dissociation than NiCoP and CoP. The NiCoP-CoP@NNA electrode delivers an ultra-low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm-2 with a Tafel slope of 28 mV dec-1, and is one of the best alkaline HER phosphide catalysts reported so far. This discovery broadens the knowledge of materials synthesis and provides insights into regulating the phase and composition of materials. NiCoP-CoP@NNA is a hierarchical heterostructured HER catalyst prepared by Ni solid-state diffusion from Ni nanowire substrate. DFT shows that Ni atoms diffuse from nano-sized substrate easily, and the heterostructure has a low water dissociation energy barrier, leading to better HER activity.

Abstract:Rational design of cost-effective and non-precious-metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) still remains a great challenge for future applications in sustainable energy storage and conversion systems. In this work, we developed a simple nitrogen-anion decoration strategy to realize the synergistic regulation of the catalytically active sites, electronic structure, and reaction dynamics in metallic CoS2 porous nanowire (NW) arrays. Specifically, the introduction of nitrogen anion in the CoS2 system, revealed by the XPS and XANES spectra, not only modified the morphology, offering additional active sites, but also enhanced the electrical conductivity to promote rapid charge transfer for the HER process. Synergistically, density functional theory confirms that the N incorporation results in more optimal free energy of hydrogen adsorption for either S or Co active sites, benefiting the HER kinetics. As expected, the N-CoS2 NW/carbon cloth (CC) electrode showed significantly enhanced HER performance with a lower overpotential and a larger exchange current density than the pristine one. This work provides a promising idea to the rational design of advanced and highly efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:It is significant to develop highly efficient and cost-effective hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts. Herein, we propose an efficient fabrication of Ni-S/MoS2 hybrid nanoflowers grown on Ti foil (Ni-S/MoS2/Ti) via a simple one-step hydrothermal reaction method. When used as a HER catalyst, Ni-S/MoS2/Ti exhibits superior HER performances compared with MoS2 grown on Ti foil (MoS2/Ti) and Ni-S adsorbed on Ti foil (Ni-S/Ti) counterparts in acid media, due to its increased active surface area, enhanced electrical conductivity and syn-ergistic effects from the coexistence of bimetallic sulfides. Additionally, Ni-S/MoS2/Ti demonstrates good HER durability, resisting the acid corrosion during HER process.
Porous Amorphous‐Crystalline Heterostructured CoNiP Nanowire Arrays for Enhanced Hydrogen Evolution Performance under Acid‐Base Conditions

Abstract:About 14.5% of porous amorphous heterostructured CoNiP ((a‐c)CoNiP) nanowire arrays with amorphous regions (a‐CoNiP) interspersed with crystalline regions (c‐(Co3.6Ni0.4)P4) exhibited excellent HER catalytic performance as well as good stability at high current densities in both acid and alkaline electrolytes, and DFT calculations showed that the HER reaction in acid and alkaline electrolyte enhancement mechanism is completely different. A novel porous amorphous‐crystalline heterostructured CoNiP nanowire arrays ((a‐c)CoNiP/CC) is presented. TEM observations and compositional calculations revealed ≈14.5% of the amorphous regions (a‐CoNiP) are interleaved in the crystalline regions (c‐(Co3.6Ni0.4)P4), forming massive amorphous‐crystalline heterogenous interfaces composed of the same elements. Only 38 and 64 mV overpotentials for the (a‐c)CoNiP/CC catalyst are required to reach the current density of −10 mA cm2 in acid and alkaline electrolyte, respectively, which is very close to the overpotentials (35 and 55 mV) of the commercial Pt/C HER catalyst. The theoretical calculation revealed that the (a‐c)CoNiP/CC has a completely different enhancement mechanism of HER reaction in acid‐base electrolytes. In particular, due to the natural corrosion resistance of the amorphous interface, the HER performance of this catalyst under the high current density condition is much better than that of the Pt/C catalyst either in acidic or in alkaline, suggesting its prospect for commercial applications.

Abstract:Developing high-performance and low-cost electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) favorably promotes large-scale hydrogen production from water. Here, we design a nanocomposite of Co 9 S 8 -Ni 9 S 8 nanodiscs (CNS) in-situ grown from polypyrrole hollow nanospheres (PHS) on carbon paper (CP) via unipolar pulse electrodeposition (UPED) technique as HER catalyst in alkaline media. The lattice structure along with the interlacing nanodiscs-like morphology of the Co 9 S 8 -Ni 9 S 8 mischcrystal is controllable by UPED method. The optimal CNS/PHS/CP electrode obtained with pulse potential of -0.80 V exhibits favorable catalytic activity with low overpotential (186 mV at 10 mA cm -2 ), superior stability performance (for 100 h with no current density decay), and high electrochemically active surface area up to 1925 cm 2 , which should be attributed to the interlacing Co 9 S 8 -Ni 9 S 8 mischcrystal with rich active sites, the ingenious combination with conductive polymer, and the integrated electron-proton conductive network. This work will provide a new sight to design low-cost bimetallic sulfide-based electrocatalysts for high-performance HER in water splitting.

Abstract:The synthesis of Ni/NiO@MoO3−x composite nanoarrays to accelerate reaction and diffusion kinetics for alkaline high current density hydrogen evolution reaction. High current density hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline water electrolysis plays crucial role in renewable and sustainable energy systems, while posing a great challenge to the highly‐efficient electrocatalysts. Here, the synthesis of Ni/NiO@MoO3−x composite nanoarrays is reported by a moderate reduction strategy, combining Ni/NiO nanoparticles (≈20 nm) with amorphous MoO3−x nanoarrays. The Ni/NiO@MoO3−x composite nanoarrays possess enhanced hydrophilicity, optimize reaction energy barriers, accelerate reactant diffusion/bubble detachment, and therefore display an ultrahigh alkaline HER activity with a low η10 overpotential of 7 mV as well as Tafel slope of 34 mV dec−1. More significantly, the Ni/NiO@MoO3−x nanoarrays only demand low overpotentials of 75 and 112 mV to deliver 100 and 200 mA cm−2 hydrogen production current, and can steadily work at 100 mA cm−2 for 40 h, which is more efficient and stable than the Pt/C catalyst.

Abstract:Metal sulfides for hydrogen evolution catalysis typically suffer from unfavorable hydrogen desorption properties due to the strong interaction between the adsorbed H and the intensely electronegative sulfur. Here, we demonstrate a general strategy to improve the hydrogen evolution catalysis of metal sulfides by modulating the surface electron densities. The N modulated NiCo 2 S 4 nanowire arrays exhibit an overpotential of 41 mV at 10 mA cm −2 and a Tafel slope of 37 mV dec −1 , which are very close to the performance of the benchmark Pt/C in alkaline condition. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, synchrotron-based X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and density functional theory studies consistently confirm the surface electron densities of NiCo 2 S 4 have been effectively manipulated by N doping. The capability to modulate the electron densities of the catalytic sites could provide valuable insights for the rational design of highly efficient catalysts for hydrogen evolution and beyond.

Abstract:There are great challenges to develop and fabricate a high performance, low-cost and stable non-platinum catalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In our study, we firstly developed a simple method to successfully fabricate a new MoS2/NiCo2S4 heterostructure by a two-step hydrothermal method, and studied the HER property of MoS2/NiCo2S4, where the as-prepared NiCo-layered double hydroxide (NiCo-LDH) was used as the precursor of NiCo2S4. Benefitting from the prominent synergistic effect between NiCo2S4 and MoS2, MoS2 provided massive catalytic active edge sites, and NiCo2S4 enhanced the conductivity of the composite. As a result, the MoS2/NiCo2S4 showed excellent HER catalytic activity, with a current of 10 mA cm(-2) at overpotential of 94 mV for HER and a low Tafel slope of 46 mV dec(-1), and good cycling stability in Alkaline Media. Three-dimensional Well-Mixed / Highly-Densed NiS-CoS Nanorod Arrays: an Efficient and Stable Bifunctional Electrocatalyst for Hydrogen and Oxygen Evolution Reactions

Abstract:An efficient self-supported 3D structured catalyst is developed by combining simple electro-deposition and hydrothermal route for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). The as-obtained Ni/Co-S electrodes show exceptional HER performance with excellent durability in both acidic and alkaline solutions, acquiring a hydrogen evolving current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at overpotentials of merely 85 mV and 102 mV in 0.5 M H2SO4 and 1.0 M KOH, respectively. For the OER, the as-designed electrocatalyst can afford an oxygen evolving current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential as low as 170 mV in 1.0 M KOH solution. Furthermore, an alkaline water splitting electrolyzer constructed with two pieces of Ni/Co-S electrodes can deliver a full water splitting current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at a voltage of 1.47 V. Moreover, a Faradic efficiency close to 100% is obtained. The as-revealed simple design, easiness to large-scale preparation and superior electrocatalytic performance enable the bifunctional Ni/Co-S act as promising electrode materials for overall water splitting. Abstract:Developing robust and low-cost electrocatalysts for efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through facile methods is of great significance to the energy and environment sustainability. Herein, a simple one-pot solvothermal method has been developed to synthesize a hybrid material of nickel@nickel carbide (Ni@Ni3C) nanochain embedded in a network of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The electrochemical experiments indicate that the composite of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs has the HER electrocatalytic performance comparable to that of Pt/C in an acidic medium (0.5 M H2SO4). The overpotential to reach a current density of 10 mA cm−2 in 0.5 M H2SO4 is only −74 mV with a Tafel slope of 46.9 mV dec−1. Compared to Ni@Ni3C in the absence of SWCNTs, the enhanced HER performance of Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs can be attributed to the increased intrinsic activity, improved electronic conductivity, and the electron coupling effect between Ni@Ni3C and SWCNTs. The Ni@Ni3C-SWCNTs composites also show high stability at the overpotential of −0.2 V for 24 h. This work provides guidance for the synthesis of high-performance non-precious metal electrocatalysts for HER.

Abstract:Developing high-performance noble metal-free electrodes for efficient water electrolysis for hydrogen production is of paramount importance for future renewable energy resources. However, a grand challenge is to tailor the factors affecting the catalytic electrodes such as morphology, structure, and composition of nonprecious metals. Alloying catalytic metals can lead to a synergistic effect for superior electrocatalytic properties. However, alloy formation in solution at low synthesis temperatures may result in better catalytic properties as compared to those at high temperatures due to the controlled reaction kinetics of nucleation and growth mechanisms. Herein, an aqueous solution-based preparation technology is developed to produce NiMo alloy nanowire arrays. The NiMo alloy shows significantly improved hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic activity, featured with extremely low overpotentials of 17 and 98 mV at 10 and 400 mA cm(-2), respectively, in an alkaline medium, which are better than most state-of-the-art non-noble metal-based catalysts and even comparable to platinum-based electrodes. Analyses indicate that the lattice distortions induced by Mo incorporation, increased interfacial activity by alloy formation, and plenty of MoNi4 active sites at nanowires surface collectively contribute to remarkably enhanced catalytic activity. This study provides a powerful toolbox for highly efficient nonprecious metal-based electrodes for practical HER application.
NiCu alloys anchored Co3O4 nanowire arrays as efficient hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts in alkaline and neutral media

Abstract:Robust and long-lasting non-precious metal electrocatalysts are essential to achieve sustainable hydrogen production. In this work, we synthesized Co3O4@NiCu by electrodepositing NiCu nanoclusters onto Co3O4 nanowire arrays that were formed in situ on nickel foam. The introduction of NiCu nanoclusters altered the inherent electronic structure of Co3O4, significantly increasing the exposure of active sites and enhancing endogenous electrocatalytic activity. Co3O4@NiCu exhibited overpotentials of only 20 and 73 mV, respectively, at 10 mA cm-2 current densities in alkaline and neutral media. These values were equivalent to those of commercial Pt catalysts. Finally, the electron accumulation effect at the Co3O4@NiCu, along with a negative shift in the d-band center, is finally revealed by theoretical calculations. Hydrogen adsorption on consequent electron-rich Cu sites was effectively weakened, leading to a robust catalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Overall, this study proposes a practical strategy for creating efficient HER electrocatalysts in both alkaline and neutral media.

Abstract:Heterostructures comprising NiCoP and NiCo2S4 (referred to as NCP/NCS) were created by incorporating P and S elements into NiCO2O4 (NCO) micro-nanospheres through phosphorization and hydrothermal sulfurization processes. Selective construction of heterogeneous structures can balance the advantages and disadvantages of each single component and is desirable in HER applications. In alkaline media, the resulting product NCP/NCS had an overpotential of 195 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2), which is 337 mV higher than that of the original NCO and significantly better than the products of pure phosphide (NCP) and sulfide (NCS). Its Tafel slope was about 83 mV dec(-1) and the HER performance did not decay significantly over 48 h. On the other hand, the formation of heterogeneous interfaces improves the intrinsic catalytic activity of the materials. Density functional theory (DFT) simulations show that the hydrogen adsorption capacity at the heterogeneous interface is optimized due to charge enrichment, which in turn enhances the intrinsic activity.

Abstract:NixCo3−xO4 nanowire arrays are grown on a Ti foil for efficient oxygen evolution reactions. Ni‐doped nanowire arrays have higher electrocatalytic activity than pure Co3O4. The success of the nanowire electrodes results from their high surface areas and direct electron contact to the conductive substrate.

Abstract:To design rationally and manufacture controllably electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) based on abundant elements of the earth is a critical, urgent and necessary. Herein, a unique nano-architecture consisted of Ni hydroxide and CuCoP supported on nickel foam (F-CuCoP/Ni(OH) 2 /NF) has been prepared as a highly efficient HER electrocatalyst by simple hydrothermal, calcination and electrodeposition method. Ni(OH) 2 nanoparticles are attached onto CuCoP nanowires and nanosheets via the electrodeposition process. The resulting F-CuCoP/Ni(OH) 2 /NF exhibited excellent electrocatalytic performance for HER with an overpotential as low as 105 mV to reach 10 mA cm −2 in alkaline electrolyte. After 12 h of stability test, the electrode shows a favorable electrocatalytic capability and stability. This particular combination of the means is expectantly conduce to progress of energy.
