Abstract:The ability of extracellular vesicles (EVs) to transmit signals on the cell surface and/or transfer their contents from donor to recipient cells to elicit phenotypic changes has been shown to be highly relevant to many biological mechanisms. During this process, EVs dock onto target cell membranes, such as the plasma membrane and/or endosomal membrane, after endocytic uptake. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that EV families may be taken up by cells through various routes. The uptake mechanism may depend on lipids, proteins, and glycoproteins found on the surfaces of both EVs and recipient cells. Therefore, it is important to understand the molecular mechanisms of the dock and uptake mechanisms of EVs; such knowledge may help to identify new molecular mechanisms in cell-cell communication and establish new targets for precision therapeutics.
