Abstract:Precipitation is crucial in simulating hydrological processes using the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT), which directly impacts runoff and the transport of nutrient loads. Achieving precipitation data at high spatial resolution is essential for accurately forecasting hydrological simulations within watersheds. The primary uncertainty in SWAT arises from the homogenization of precipitation within Hydrological Response Units (HRUs) in the same subbasin, a result of the simplistic method employed by the precipitation subroutine for reading and distributing precipitation data. In this study, we propose the utilization of the area-weighted method to calculated HRU-specific precipitation data using the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model for the first time. Additionally, we enhance the precipitation allocation mechanism within the SWAT model subroutine, enabling the derivation of precipitation in the basin from each HRU rather than relying solely on average rainfall. The performance of the modified SWAT model was evaluated in a representative mesoscale mountainous basin covering 5172 km 2 within the Yangtze River Basin, presenting substantial improvements compared to the original SWAT model. Specifically, the use of HRU-specific precipitation data effectively captures the spatial variability of rainfall, resulting in a significant enhancement in the accuracy of runoff simulation. This enhancement is evidenced by an increase of 0.25 in the coefficient of determination (R 2 ) and 0.27 in the Nash -Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE). Moreover, it was observed that the original SWAT model notably underestimated monthly runoff during wet periods, with a percent bias (PBIAS) ranging from-19.20 % to-5.28 %. This discrepancy is largely attributed to the inaccurate representation of rainfall heterogeneity. Our findings emphasize the importance of accurately of rainfall in the precipitation module to improve the SWAT model 's assessment of water resources in mountainous basins.
