Abstract:In the construction of smart city,the depth development of Internet,Internet of things,communication networks and large-scale intelligent services will result in massive,heterogeneous,multi-source big spatio-temporaì urban data.In the era of big data,we should think deeply about the construction of smart city.How to deal with these large-scale and complicated urban data is facing enormous challenges,including data collection,sensing,storage,management,mining,visualization and efficient services.In this paper we mainly discuss the driving effects of big data on smart city in the views of technology,legislation and management.We analyze the features and applications of big spatio-temporal urban data in two directions,point out the importance of legislation from the perspective of data assets,and summarize the management of smart city in terms of policy management,rewards and punishments,and market mechanisms.Finally,we put forward some thoughts on the construction of smart city driven by big data.

Based on strong real-time characteristics and high efficiency of traffic big data processing, a traffic data processing platform based on big data technique is built up. And the architecture of traffic big data processing system is proposed for this platform from methodological views. The main investigation topic of this architecture and its concerned theory, method and technique are discussed in connection with data source, data processing, knowledge database and application of the system, laying a foundation for detailed analysis and processing of traffic data.
Cellular Signaling Data Driven Simulation-Based Dynamic Traffic Assignment and Its Applications to a Real-World Road Network

Abstract:This paper presents a big data driven simulation-based dynamic traffic assignment (DTA) model by combining cellular signaling data, remote microwave sensors and license plate recognition (LPR) cameras data. First, the static origin destination (OD) matrix is estimated by using cellular signaling data. Second, remote microwave and LPR data are fused to calibrate parameters on the network supply side, including the link fundamental diagram calibration and link impedance function calibration. Third, a mesoscopic simulation model is developed by using DTALite, and the dynamic OD calibration is conducted by comparing link flows generated by simulation-based DTA and measured by remote microwave sensors. Finally, this paper takes the real-world road network of Hangzhou as an example to quantitatively assess impacts of large-scale implemented work zones before the 2016 G20 Summit and adverse weather conditions on the road network performance with the developed model. Results show the big data driven simulation-based DTA model developed in this paper has wide prospects of applications in the evaluation and optimization of comprehensive transportation management strategies.

Abstract:During the last few years, information technology and transportation industries, along with automotive manufacturers and academia, are focusing on leveraging intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve services related to driver experience, connected cars, Internet data plans for vehicles, traffic infrastructure, urban transportation systems, traffic collaborative management, road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plans, and the development of an effective ecosystem for vehicles, drivers, traffic controllers, city planners, and transportation applications. Moreover, the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have provided unprecedented opportunities for the development and realization of innovative intelligent transportation systems where sensors and mobile devices can gather information and cloud computing, allowing knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making. However, the development of such data-driven ITS requires the integration, processing, and analysis of plentiful information obtained from millions of vehicles, traffic infrastructures, smartphones, and other collaborative systems like weather stations and road safety and early warning systems. The huge amount of data generated by ITS devices is only of value if utilized in data analytics for decision-making such as accident prevention and detection, controlling road risks, reducing traffic carbon emissions, and other applications which bring big data analytics into the picture.

Abstract:Big data for social transportation brings us unprecedented opportunities for resolving transportation problems for which traditional approaches are not competent and for building the next-generation intelligent transportation systems. Although social data have been applied for transportation analysis, there are still many challenges. First, social data evolve with time and contain abundant information, posing a crucial need for data collection and cleaning. Meanwhile, each type of data has specific advantages and limitations for social transportation, and one data type alone is not capable of describing the overall state of a transportation system. Systematic data fusing approaches or frameworks for combining social signal data with different features, structures, resolutions, and precision are needed. Second, data processing and mining techniques, such as natural language processing and analysis of streaming data, require further revolutions in effective utilization of real-time traffic information. Third, social data are connected to cyber and physical spaces. To address practical problems in social transportation, a suite of schemes are demanded for realizing big data in social transportation systems, such as crowdsourcing, visual analysis, and task-based services. In this paper, we overview data sources, analytical approaches, and application systems for social transportation, and we also suggest a few future research directions for this new social transportation field.

Abstract:Big data brings both opportunities and challenges to technological development and application innovation of urban intelligent transportation system. Significant changes of ITS, which brought by traffic big data, are shown in three aspects:the concept of traffic big data, problems brought by traffic big data, and big-data-driven based mathematic modeling methods. This paper is intended to deeply understand big data, the background and category of traffic big data are sketched, the"6V"characteristics of traffic big data are proposed, the basic types of traffic big data in ITS are summarized. Strategies and ideas are presented based on the problems of traffic big data, namely, data security, network communication, computational efficiency, and data storage. This paper also analyzes the method of data driven model, and describes the significance of hybrid model. Finally, system framework of ITS based on traffic big data is proposed.

Abstract:The service life and service quality of transportation infrastructures are crucial for the regular function and public safety of transportation systems. Thus, the intelligent and accurate evaluation, prediction, and analysis of transportation infrastructure service conditions have always been hot topics for transportation engineers, where such problems are sometimes hard to be solved using traditional approaches, considering different factors including complex traffic conditions, severe environmental conditions, etc. In recent years, intelligent technologies, including advanced sensors, novel artificial intelligent approaches (deep learning, etc.), the IoT-based monitoring and analysis platform, auto piloting, green energy, synergistic technologies, and systems integrating both traffic and infrastructures monitoring, have emerged as powerful tools in transportation engineering area. These efforts have greatly advanced the service convenience of public transportation, prolonged the service life of transportation infrastructures, and improved the efficiency and safety of transportation systems.

Abstract:The application of big data in public transportation is a profound reform that will revolutionize the service concept, management mechanism, and business model of the public transportation industry. Big data have far-reaching theoretical and practical significance. In this chapter, the application of big data in public transportation planning, operation, and management is introduced from the aspects of the classification and processing of these big data and their combination with other data. Based on our previous research results, the application of public transportation big data in areas such as bus arrival times prediction, commuting behavior mining, and performance evaluation of public transportation networks (E-Science public transportation big data platform) is introduced. In addition, case studies are provided using data from the Beijing public transportation system to introduce the application of public transportation big data in practical problems.

As a crucial and fundamental data for traffic planning and traffic organization, travel demand has been an important research topic for a long time. Stepping into the big data era, the fast developments in the research fields of human mobility and complex network offer new methodologies for predicting travel demand and improving transportation networks. In this paper, we review the important works in the areas of human mobility and transportation network, discuss the potential opportunities which bring to transportation engineering, and finally introduce a new interdisciplinary study of the two research areas.

Abstract:A combination of factors render the transportation sector a highly desirable area for data management research. The transportation sector receives substantial investments and is of high societal interest across the globe. Since there is limited room for new roads, smarter use of the existing infrastructure is of essence. The combination of the continued proliferation of sensors and mobile devices with the drive towards open data will result in rapidly increasing volumes of data becoming available. The data management community is well positioned to contribute to building a smarter transportation infrastructure. We believe that efficient management and effective analysis of big transportation data will enable us to extract transportation knowledge, which will bring significant and diverse benefits to society. We describe the data, present key challenges related to the extraction of thorough, timely, and trustworthy traffic knowledge to achieve total traffic awareness, and we outline services that may be enabled. It is thus our hope that the paper will inspire data management researchers to address some of the many challenges in the transportation area.

Abstract:Big data uses network information technology in an extremely large number of information systems to quickly process and analyze this huge data information. In this way, the Internet of things system has the characteristics of rapidness, high efficiency, low density, and strong authenticity. Cohesion analysis technology refers to the process of effectively combining data mining and machine learning algorithms, a technology for fast and complete processing. The main working mechanism of cluster analysis is to classify similar objects according to the correlation of different data in the objects. Big data and Internet of things technology methods and traffic data have applicability, providing new ways to use big data in traffic and Internet of things. Through the analysis of various road traffic problems, the possibility of optimizing traffic through big data and the Internet of things is created, which will bring very good ideas and references for the development of intelligent transportation. Today, with the rapid development of the Internet of things, with the emergence and popularization of new hardware and the popularization and development of smart electronic terminals and mobile devices, traffic information–related data has also doubled. It is an inevitable requirement of development to use big data system for scientific and standardized management of traffic management departments, so that the traffic management system can be more optimized and reasonable, so as to completely solve the current phenomenon of road traffic congestion. To improve the transportation management of the latest information in the transportation system requires the use of information technology and data management systems. The big data system in the transportation field is an effective way to improve intelligent transportation management and transportation.

Abstract:Big data is becoming a research focus in intelligent transportation systems (ITS), which can be seen in many projects around the world. Intelligent transportation systems will produce a large amount of data. The produced big data will have profound impacts on the design and application of intelligent transportation systems, which makes ITS safer, more efficient, and profitable. Studying big data analytics in ITS is a flourishing field. This paper first reviews the history and characteristics of big data and intelligent transportation systems. The framework of conducting big data analytics in ITS is discussed next, where the data source and collection methods, data analytics methods and platforms, and big data analytics application categories are summarized. Several case studies of big data analytics applications in intelligent transportation systems, including road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plan, rail transportation management and control, and assets maintenance are introduced. Finally, this paper discusses some open challenges of using big data analytics in ITS.
