Abstract:Air pollution may push people to either stay indoors or travel to "escape from haze." However, it is still unclear when and who will travel to escape from air pollution. Using a large-scale hotel check-in dataset, we find that the effect of air pollution on travel demand shows an inverted-U shape over cumulative exposure days. Specifically, the effect is negative in a time window of "1-5" days while positive in another time window of "8-13" days. Moreover, retirement-age people are more likely to travel to escape from air pollution than non-retirement-age people. Our findings could guide tourism product design.
