Abstract:The rising levels of CO2 are unavoidably connected to climate change and its consequences on atmospheric temperatures throughout the world. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a dependable and practical method for capturing carbon emissions from industry. This article introduces the realms of direct air capture, post-combustion carbon capture, and pre-combustion carbon capture. Furthermore, the paper delves into the fascinating world of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) materials with a high porosity, tunable structures, and exceptional adsorption capacities that can effectively absorb substantial quantities of CO2, qualifying them as promising candidates for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The synthesis methods and performance evaluation of MOF materials concerning carbon capture were introduced. Some of the challenges associated with MOFs are also discussed, including their reduced stability at high temperatures and sensitivity to moisture. This paper provides a comprehensive overview of carbon capture technologies, highlighting the potential of MOFs while addressing current challenges and opportunities in the field.
Hierarchical Structure with Highly Ordered Macroporous-Mesoporous Metal-Organic Frameworks As Dual Function for CO2 Fixation

Abstract:As a major greenhouse gas, the continuous increase of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere has caused serious environmental problems, although CO2 is also an abundant, inexpensive, and nontoxic carbon source. Here, we use metal-organic framework (MOF) with highly ordered hierarchical structure as adsorbent and catalyst for chemical fixation of CO2 at atmospheric pressure, and the CO2 can be converted to the formate in excellent yields. Meanwhile, we have successfully integrated highly ordered macroporous and mesoporous structures into MOFs, and the macro-, meso-, and microporous structures have all been presented in one framework. Based on the unique hierarchical pores, high surface area (592 m(2)/g), and high CO2 adsorption capacity (49.51 cm(3)/g), the ordered macroporous-mesoporous MOFs possess high activity for chemical fixation of CO2 (yield of 77%). These results provide a promising route of chemical CO2 fixation through MOF materials.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of microporous materials that have been highlighted with fast and selective sorption of gas molecules; however, they are at least partially unstable in the scale-up process. Here, we report a rational shaping of MOFs in a scalable architecture of fiber sorbent. The long-standing stability challenge of MOFs was resolved by using stable metal oxide precursors that are subject to controlled surface oxide dissolution-growth chemistry during the Mg-based MOF synthesis. Highly uniform MOF crystals are synthesized along with the open-porous fiber sorbents networks, showing unprecedented cyclic CO2 capacities in both flue gas and direct air capture (DAC) conditions. The same chemistry enables an in situ flow synthesis of Mg-MOF fiber sorbents, providing a scalable pathway for MOF synthesis in an inert condition with minimal handling steps. This modular approach can serve both as a reaction stage for enhanced MOF fiber sorbent synthesis and as a "process-ready" separation device.

Abstract:In this study, a facile strategy is reported for the preparation of porous carbon materials with adjustable pore size through carbonization of MOF-5 at 900 degrees C with the assistance of different additives. Results show that the physical and chemical properties (such as morphology, carbon defect content, BET specific surface area, pore structure) of the porous carbon materials can be adjusted through introduction of different compounds (i.e., C16H32O2, C6H14O6, C18H36O2, Na2CO3, KOH, Cu(NO3)2, NaCl, KCl, MgCl2, ethyl cellulose) during the carbon-ization processes. CO2 adsorption experiment results show that there is a linear relationship between the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) and the cumulative pore volume of pores at 5-7 angstrom, suggesting that pores in the range of 5-7 angstrom play a major role in CO2 adsorption at such condition. While the CO2 adsorption capacity (at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar) is independent on the BET specific surface area of the materials. Among the prepared porous carbon materials, 5C-C6H14O6-900 exhibits the highest CO2 adsorption capacity (i.e., 3.32 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 1 bar, 0.88 mmol/g at 25 degrees C and 0.15 bar), with good adsorption/desorption cycle stability and CO2/N2 selectivity. Our work provides a facile and general method to adjust and control the pore size dis-tribution of MOF-derived porous carbon materials. Besides, the analysis results indicate that the micropores in a specific pore size range play a decisive role in the adsorption of CO2 at low pressure, which provides a new idea for the preparation of high-efficiency adsorbents at low pressures.

Abstract:Direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 has emerged as the most promising "negative carbon emission" technologies. Despite being state-of-the-art, sorbents deploying alkali hydroxides/amine solutions or amine-modified materials still suffer from unsolved high energy consumption and stability issues. In this work, composite sorbents are crafted by hybridizing a robust metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF) with superbase-derived ionic liquid (SIL), possessing well maintained crystallinity and chemical structures. The low-pressure (0.4 mbar) volumetric CO2 capture assessment and a fixed-bed breakthrough examination with 400 ppm CO2 gas flow reveal high-performance DAC of CO2 (CO2 uptake capacity of up to 0.58 mmol g-1 at 298 K) and exceptional cycling stability. Operando spectroscopy analysis reveals the rapid (400 ppm) CO2 capture kinetics and energy-efficient/fast CO2 releasing behaviors. The theoretical calculation and small-angle X-ray scattering demonstrate that the confinement effect of the MOF cavity enhances the interaction strength of reactive sites in SIL with CO2 , indicating great efficacy of the hybridization. The achievements in this study showcase the exceptional capabilities of SIL-derived sorbents in carbon capture from ambient air in terms of rapid carbon capture kinetics, facile CO2 releasing, and good cycling performance.

Abstract:CO2 capture science and technology, particularly for the post-combustion CO2 capture, has become one of very important research fields, due to great concern of global warming. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with a unique feature of structural fine-tunability, unlike the traditional porous solid materials, can provide many and powerful platforms to explore high-performance adsorbents for post-combustion CO2 capture. Until now, several strategies for finely tuning MOF structures have been developed, in which either the larger quadrupole moment and polarizability of CO2 are considered: metal ion change (I), functional groups attachment (II) and functional group insertion (III), vary the electronic nature of the pore surface; or targeting the smaller kinetic diameter of CO2 over N2 is focused on: framework interpenetration (IV), ligand shortening (V) and coordination site shifting (VI) contract the pore size of frameworks to improve their CO2 capture properties. In this review, from the viewpoint of synthetic materials scientists/chemists, we would like to introduce and summarize these strategies based upon recent work published by other groups and ourselves.

Abstract:Reducing anthropogenic CO2 emission and lowering the concentration of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has quickly become one of the most urgent environmental issues of our age. Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one option for reducing these harmful CO2 emissions. While a variety of technologies and methods have been developed, the separation of CO2 from gas streams is still a critical issue. Apart from establishing new techniques, the exploration of capture materials with high separation performance and low capital cost are of paramount importance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a new class of crystalline porous materials constructed by metal-containing nodes bonded to organic bridging ligands hold great potential as adsorbents or membrane materials in gas separation. In this paper, we review the research progress (from experimental results to molecular simulations) in MOFs for CO2 adsorption, storage, and separations (adsorptive separation and membrane-based separation) that are directly related to CO2 capture.

Abstract:The world's population and economy have grown quickly, which has resulted in significant carbon dioxide emissions. People are concerned about the ensuing climate change and other problems. While there are now technologies that can lower alarming levels of greenhouse gas emissions, carbon dioxide capture is seen to be the most economical solution. Thus, it is essential to create efficient CO2 capture systems. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been demonstrated to be the most successful materials for CO2 collection and adsorption due to their microporous structure and advantageous properties, making them the most promising materials currently on the market. The basic properties of MOFs, such as their large surface area, chemical stability, adjustable pores, and porous structure, are initially outlined in this article. Next, the features of MOFs for separation were presented, particularly how well they could separate CO2 from gases like hydrogen, natural gas, and flue gas. Lastly, this research highlights the use of chemical functionalization, doping metals, and unsaturated metal centers to improve MOFs' adsorption and CO2 storage capabilities.
Two Stable Sodalite-Cage-Based MOFs for Highly Gas Selective Capture and Conversion in Cycloaddition Reaction

Abstract:Stable metal-organic frameworks, containing periodically arranged nanosized cages or pores and active Lewis acid-base sites, are considered ideal candidates for efficient heterogeneous catalysis. Herein, based on the light of reticular chemistry design principles, the ingenious assembly of two pyridine N-rich multifunctional triangular linkers, H3TBA [3,5-di (1h-tetrazol-5-yl) benzoic acid] and H2TZI [5-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)isophthalic acid], with MnII formed PCP-33(Mn) and PCP-34(Mn), respectively. PCP-33(Mn) and PCP-34(Mn) are typical sod topology zeolitic metal-organic frameworks (ZMOFs) with hierarchical tetragonal micropores and metal organic polyhedral sodalite-like cages. The inner walls of these cages are modified by open metal sites MnII and Lewis acid-base sites of halide ions and N pyridine atoms. The characteristics of the cages' structures make two MOFs exhibit high surface area and a small window, which promote their outstanding gas capture ability (C2H2, 131.8 cm3 g-1; CO2, 77.9 cm3 g-1 at 273 K) and selective separation performance (C2H2/CH4, 226.2, CO2/CH4, 50.3 at 298 K), and are also suitable as catalytic reactors for metal/solvent-free chemical fixation of CO2 with epoxides to achieve high-efficiency CO2 conversion. Furthermore, they are greatly recyclable for several cycles while retaining their structural rigidity and catalytic activity.

Abstract:The extra CO2 that has already been released into the atmosphere has to be removed in order to create a world that is carbon neutral. Technologies have been created to remove carbon dioxide from wet flue gas or even directly from ambient air, however these technologies are not widely deployed yet. New generations of creative CO2 capture sorbents have been produced as a consequence of recent improvements in material assembly and surface chemistry. We summarize recent progress on water-stable and encapsulated metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for CO2 capture under a wide range of environmental and operating conditions. In particular, newly developed water-stable MOFs and hydrophobic coating technologies are discussed with insights into their materials discovery and the synergistic effects between different components of these hybrid sorbent systems. The future perspectives and directions of water-stable and encapsulated MOFs are also given for Direct Air Capture of CO2 and CO2 capture from wet flue gas.

Abstract:Rapidly increasing atmospheric CO2 concentrations threaten human society, the natural environment, and the synergy between the two. In order to ameliorate the CO2 problem, carbon capture and conversion techniques have been proposed. Metal-organic framework (MOF)-based materials, a relatively new class of porous materials with unique structural features, high surface areas, chemical tunability and stability, have been extensively studied with respect to their applicability to such techniques. Recently, it has become apparent that the CO2 capture capabilities of MOF-based materials significantly boost their potential toward CO2 conversion. Furthermore, MOF-based materials' well-defined structures greatly facilitate the understanding of structure-property relationships and their roles in CO2 capture and conversion. In this review, we provide a comprehensive account of significant progress in the design and synthesis of MOF-based materials, including MOFs, MOF composites and MOF derivatives, and their application to carbon capture and conversion. Special emphases on the relationships between CO2 capture capacities of MOF-based materials and their catalytic CO2 conversion performances are discussed.

Abstract:Despite the known impacts on climate change of carbon dioxide emissions, the continued use of fossil fuels for energy generation leading to the emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere is evident. Therefore, innovation to address and reduce CO2 emissions from industrial operations remains an urgent and crucial priority. A viable strategy in the area is postcombustion capture mainly through absorption by aqueous alkanolamines, which focuses on the separation of CO2 from flue gas, despite its limitations. Within this context, porous materials, particularly metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have arisen as favorable alternatives owing to their significant adsorption capacity, selectivity, and reduced regeneration energy demands. This research evaluates the engineering insights into tailored MOFs for enhanced CO2 capture, focusing on three series of MOFs (ZIF, UiO-66, and BTC) to investigate the effects of organic ligands, functional groups, and metal ions. The evaluation encompassed a range of aspects including adsorption isotherms of pure gases [CO2 and nitrogen (N2)] and mixed gas mixture (CO2 and N2 with 15:85% ratio), along with utilization of the ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) to simulate multicomponent gas adsorption isotherms. Moreover, the reliability of IAST for mixed gas adsorption prediction has been investigated in detail. The research offers valuable insights into the correlation between the characteristics of MOFs and their effectiveness in gas separation and how these characteristics contribute to the differences between IAST predictions and experimental results. The findings enhance the understanding of how to enhance MOF characteristics in order to reduce CO2 emissions and also highlight the need for advanced models that consider thermodynamic nonidealities to accurately predict the behavior of mixed gas adsorption in MOFs. As a result, the incorporation of MOFs with enhanced predictability and reliability into CO2 capture industrial processes is facilitated.

Abstract:The escalating threat of anthropogenic climate change has spurred an urgent quest for innovative CO2 capture and utilization (CCU) technologies. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as prominent candidates in CO2 capture and conversion due to their large specific surface area, well-defined porous structure, and tunable chemical properties. This review unveils the latest advancements in MOF-based materials specifically designed for superior CO2 adsorption, precise separation, advanced photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, progressive CO2 hydrogenation, and dual functionalities. We explore the strategies that enhance MOF efficiency and examine the challenges of and opportunities afforded by transitioning from laboratory research to industrial application. Looking ahead, this review offers a visionary perspective on harnessing MOFs for the sustainable capture and conversion of CO2.

Abstract:Direct conversion of diluted CO2 to value-added chemical stocks and fuels with solar energy is an energy-saving approach to relieve global warming and realize a carbon-neutral cycle. The exploration of catalysts with both efficient CO2 adsorption and reduction ability is significant to achieving this goal. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are emerging in the field of low-concentration CO2 reduction due to their highly tunable structure, high porosity, abundant active sites and excellent CO2 adsorption capacity. This highlight outlines the advantages of MOFs for low-pressure CO2 adsorption and the strategies to improve the photocatalytic performance of MOF materials at low CO2 concentrations, including the functionalization of organic ligands, regulation of metal nodes and preparation of MOF composites or derivatives. This paper aims to provide possible avenues for the rational design and development of catalysts with the ability to reduce low-concentration CO2 efficiently for practical applications.

In the recent years, CO2 capture and storage technologies have received a worldwide attention. Adsorption is considered as one of the efficient options for CO2 capture because of its cost advantage, low energy requirement and extensive applicability over a relatively wide range of temperature and pressure. The metal organic frameworks (MOFs) show widely potential application prospects in CO2 capture and storage owing to their outstanding textural properties, such as the extraordinarily high specific surface area, tunable pore size, ultrahigh porosity (up to 90%), high crystallinity, adjustable internal surface properties, and controllable structure. Herein, the most important research progress of MOFs materials on the CO2 capture and storage in recent years has been comprehensively reviewed. The extraordinary characteristics and CO2 capture performance of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs), Bio-metal organic frameworks (bio-MOFs), IL@MOFs and MOF-composite materials were highlighted. The promising strategies for improving the CO2 adsorption properties of MOFs materials, especially the low-pressure adsorption performance under actual flue gas conditions, are also carefully summarized. Besides, CO2 is considered as an abundant, nontoxic, nonflammable, and renewable C1 resource for the synthesis of useful chemicals and fuels. The potential routes for resource utilization of the captured CO2 are briefly proposed.
