Abstract:In this study, sulfite modified graphene-like biochar (SIZBC) with reduction and adsorption properties was prepared to enhance the removal efficiency of pollutants by ferrate (Fe(VI)). After the addition of SIZBC, the removal rate of dimethoate by Fe(Ⅵ) increased from 26% to over 97%, and the reaction rate was accelerated by 34 times. The good adsorption performance of biochar was not significantly influenced by the presence of Fe(Ⅵ), and the contributions of adsorption and oxidation under the optimal reaction conditions were 25% and 75%, respectively. The oxidizing property of Fe(VI) was strengthened by the reducing groups of SIZBC, and more active species including ·OH, SO4·¯, and Fe(V) were produced, with the contributions of SO4·¯ > ·OH > Fe(V). Enlarging the sulfite solution concentration of modified biochar, the transformation from ·OH/Fe(V) to SO4·¯ was promoted. As the concentration of Fe(Ⅵ) increased, the contributions of ·OH and SO4·¯ gradually decreased and Fe(V) became the main active oxidant. Furthermore, Fe(VI)-induced core/shell nanoparticles exhibited in situ adsorption ability, and the removal of total phosphorus (TP) with Fe(VI) was raised by 27% due to the presence of SIZBC. The intermediates were further mineralized to inorganic substances by Fe(VI) under the catalytic action of SIZBC. Finally, the Fe(VI)/SIZBC technology could be applied to real water, and the inhibition rate of luminescent bacteria by dimethoate and its degradation products was reduced from 12.7% to 5.3% after treatment.
