Abstract:Understanding Ca isotope variability of groundwaters in carbonate- or silicate-dominated catchments could provide new insights into processes controlling the Ca isotope fluxes in the global Ca budget. Two geographically close but lithologically different sites were investigated along the middle reaches of Yangtze River, where Xiangxi River Basin drains carbonate rocks and Jianghan Plain drains mostly silicates. Although the Ca isotope variations are small, there is a significant correlation between δ44/40Ca and Mg/Ca, suggesting that calcite precipitation has affected the Ca isotope signatures, which tends to narrow the differences so that average groundwater δ44/40Ca values are close to Bulk Silicate Earth values. Besides, carbon isotopes indicated that buried organic matter particularly in the meanders, palaeo-channels, and oxbow lakes along the middle reaches of Yangtze River provided unique favorable environment for the formation of high Ca groundwater in the basin. These findings should be applicable to similar fluvial-lacustrine sedimentary aquifers including floodplains and river delta regions worldwide.
