Abstract:A series of Al-based isomorphs (CAU-10H, MIL-160, KMF-1, and CAU-10pydc) were synthesized using isophthalic acid (ipa), 2,5-furandicarboxylic acid (fdc), 2,5-pyrrole dicarboxylic acid (pyrdc), and 3,5-pyridinedicarboxylic acid (pydc), respectively. These isomorphs were systematically investigated to identify the best adsorbent for effectively separating C2H6/C2H4. All CAU-10 isomorphs exhibited preferential adsorption of C2H6 over that of C2H4 in mixture. CAU-10pydc exhibited the best C2H6/C2H4 selectivity (1.68) and the highest C2H6 uptake (3.97 mmol g-1) at 298 K and 1 bar. In the breakthrough experiment using CAU-10pydc, 1/1 (v/v) and 1/15 (v/v) C2H6/C2H4 gas mixtures were successfully separated into high-purity C2H4 (>99.95%), with remarkable productivities of 14.0 LSTP kg-1 and 32.0 LSTP kg-1, respectively, at 298 K. Molecular simulations revealed that the exceptional separation performance of CAU-10pydc originated from the increased porosity and reduced electron density of the pyridine ring of pydc, leading to a relatively larger decrease in π-π interactions with C2H4 than in the C-H···π interactions with C2H6. This study demonstrates that the pore size and geometry of the CAU-10 platform are modulated by the inclusion of heteroatom-containing benzene dicarboxylate or heterocyclic rings of dicarboxylate-based organic linkers, thereby fine-tuning the C2H6/C2H4 separation ability. CAU-10pydc was determined to be an optimum adsorbent for this challenging separation.

Abstract:The separation of medium and high carbon number linear and cyclic olefins and alkanes is a great challenge in the petrochemical industry, due to the closer molecular structure and physical properties with increased carbon chains. The adsorptive separation offers an alternative to the conventional energy-intensive distillations, but its separation efficiency is limited by the low adsorption capacity and high energy penalty for regeneration. Herein, we employed anion-pillared porous materials (SIFSIX-1-Cu, SIFSIX-2-Cu-i and ZU-61) that addressed the separation challenge of cyclohexene and cyclohexane. ZU-61 with suitable pore size and high-density anions exhibits recorded cyclohexene uptake capacity (6.11 mmol·g -1 ), 3 times of the common zeolite 13X (2.11 mmol·g -1 ) as well as the high separation selectivity. Combined with single-crystal diffraction experiment and simulation studies, the results demonstrate the dominated role of anions in discriminating different kind of H atoms (-C-H and =C-H), which enables the efficient discrimination towards cyclohexene from cyclohexane. Moreover, benefiting from the moderate strength enabled by the anions, the cyclohexene saturated ZU-61 could be easy regenerated under 80 ºC, the value is obviously lower than that of zeolite 13X (200 ºC). This work demonstrates the superiority of anions in recognizing the olefins and paraffins with medium and high carbon number and offers guidance to the related challenging separations.
Separation of Aromatics/Cyclic Aliphatics by Nonporous Adaptive Pillararene Crystals

Abstract:The separation of cyclic aliphatics of high purity, which are produced from hydrogenation of the corresponding aromatics, is highly desired in the chemical industry. An energy-efficient and environmentally friendly adsorptive separation method using nonporous adaptive crystals of perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) and pillar[6]arene (EtP6) is described. Adaptive EtP5 crystals separate toluene from methylcyclohexane with 98.8 % purity, while adaptive EtP6 crystals separate methylcyclohexane from toluene with 99.2 % purity. The selectivities come from the stability of new EtP5 and EtP6 crystal structures upon capture of toluene and methylcyclohexane, respectively. The reversible transformations between nonporous guest-free EtP5 or EtP6 structures and guest-loaded structures make them highly recyclable.

Abstract:The separation of benzene and cyclohexane is one of the most challenging tasks in the petrochemical field. However, conventional separation methods suffer from cumbersome operation, huge energy expenditure, or use of entrainers. Herein, we develop an environmentally friendly and energy saving adsorptive separation strategy using nonporous adaptive crystals of a hybrid[3]arene (1). Adaptive 1 crystals separate benzene from an equimolar benzene/cyclohexane mixture with a purity of 97.5%. The selectivity comes from the stability and variability of the new crystal structure upon capture of the preferred guest, benzene. Moreover, reversible transformations between the nonporous guest-free structure and the guest-containing structure make 1 highly recyclable.

Abstract:Refineries generally employ multiple energy-intensive distillation/adsorption columns to separate and purify complicated chemical mixtures. Materials such as multi-functional molecular separators integrating various modules capable of separating molecules according to their shape and chemical properties simultaneously may represent an alternative. Herein, we address this challenge in the context of one-step removal of alkynes and propadiene from cracking gases (up to 10 components) using a multi-functional and responsive material ZU-33 through a guest/temperature dual-response regulation strategy. The responsive and guest-adaptive properties of ZU-33 provide the optimized binding energy for alkynes and propadiene, and avoid the competitive adsorption of olefins and paraffins, which is verified by breakthrough tests, single-crystal X-ray diffraction experiments, and simulation studies. The responsive properties to different stimuli endow materials with multiple regulation methods and broaden the boundaries of the applicability of porous materials to challenging separations.
Selective Separation of Methylfuran and Dimethylfuran by Nonporous Adaptive Crystals of Pillararenes.

Abstract:The separation of 2-methylfuran (MeF) and 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMeF) mixtures is very important in the chemical industry. Herein, we offer a novel strategy for the separation of MeF and DMeF using nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) of perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5), perethylated pillar[6]arene (EtP6), perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5), and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). We find that the crystals of EtP6 and BrP5 show remarkable selectivities for MeF in a 50:50 (v/v) MeF:DMeF mixture vapor, yielding purities of 94.0 and 96.3%, respectively. Single-crystal structures reveal that these different selectivities come from the different thermodynamic stabilities and binding modes of the host-guest complexes. Cycling experiments demonstrate that these crystals can be reused more than five cycles without loss of performance.

Abstract:The production of high purity toluene and pyridine is of significance in both industrial production and synthetic chemistry. The present protocols available to separate toluene/pyridine mixtures are several energy-intensive distillation methods, which are not environmently-friendly and cost-effective. Here we provide an energy-efficient and simple adsorptive separation protocol using nonporous adaptive crystals of cucurbit[6]uril ( Q[6] ). Q[6] crystals separate pyridine from toluene/pyridine mixtures with nearly 100% purity. Furthermore, removal of guest from guest-loaded Q[6] leads to the guest-free cucurbit[6]uril, which can be recycled without losing performance.

Abstract:The combination of macrocyclic chemistry with co-crystal engineering has promoted the development of materials with vapochromic behaviors in supramolecular science. Herein, we develop a macrocycle co-crystal based on hybrid[4]arene and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene that is able to construct vapochromic materials. After the capture of benzene and toluene vapors, activated hybrid[4]arene-based co-crystal forms new structures, accompanied by color changes from brown to yellow. However, when hybrid[4]arene-based co-crystal captures cyclohexane and pyridine, neither structures nor colors change. Interestingly, hybrid[4]arene-based co-crystal can separate benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equal-volume mixture and allow toluene to be removed from a toluene/ pyridine equal-volume mixture with purities reaching 100%. In addition, the process of adsorptive separation can be visually monitored. The selectivity of benzene from a benzene/cyclohexane equal-volume mixture and toluene from a toluene/ pyridine equal-volume mixture is attributed to the different changes in the charge-transfer interaction between hybrid[4]arene and 1,2,4,5-tetracyanobenzene when hybrid[4]arene-based co-crystal captures different vapors. Moreover, hybrid[4]arene-based co-crystal can be reused without losing selectivity and performance. This work constructs a vapochromic material for hydrocarbon separation.

Abstract:Separation of monochlorotoluene isomers is a vital process to obtain highly pure p-chlorotoluene, which is irreplaceable in the production of medicines and pesticides. However, traditional separation methods suffer from great energy consumption, cumbersome operation or use of organic desorbents. Herein, an energy-efficient and environmentally friendly method is developed through an absorptive separation strategy based on nonporous adaptive crystals of perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5) and pillar[6]arene (EtP6). EtP5 and EtP6 crystals separate p-chlorotoluene from a p-chlorotoluene/o-chlorotoluene equimolar mixture with purities of 99.1% and 96.1%, respectively and show no decrease in selectivity upon cycling. The selectivity is attributed to both the stability of the final crystal structure upon guest capture and suitable host cavity size/shape. Besides, we discovered the gate-opening behavior changes of EtP5 crystals at different temperatures after absorption of p-chlorotoluene/o-chlorotoluene mixtures with various p-chlorotoluene fractions, which is helpful to understand the thermodynamics of the absorption process.

Abstract:The separation of 2,5-dimethylfuran (DMeF) and 2,5-methyltetrahydrofuran (DMeTHF) mixtures plays a crucial role in the chemical industry. However, it remains a great challenge to separate them from a mixture due to the close boiling points and forming an azeotrope using traditional separating methods. Herein, we succeeded in separating DMeF from its 50:50 v/v DMeF/DMeTHF mixture using nonporous adaptive crystals (NACs) of a hybrid[3]arene (HB3). We found that HB3 crystals revealed a 98.6% selectivity to DMeF after adsorption in a 50:50 v/v DMeF/DMeTHF mixture. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) revealed that the specific selectivity is derived from forming an intermolecular packed host−guest complex between HB3 and DMeF. The cycling experiment demonstrated that the HB3 crystals could be reused over five cycles without losing its performance.

Abstract:Isopropylbenzene (IPB) and α-methylstyrene (AMS), two members of C9 aromatics, are important in both industrial production and laboratory research, but the separation of IPB/AMS mixtures is still a big challenge. Here, we provide a new strategy to separate IPB and AMS using nonporous adaptive crystals of four pillararenes, perethylated pillar[5]arene, perethylated pillar[6]arene, perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene, and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6). Among them, BrP6 selectively adsorbs IPB from an equal volume mixture of IPB and AMS with >95% purity for solid-vapor phase adsorption and >94% purity for solid-liquid phase adsorption, while the selectivities for the other three pillararenes are unsatisfactory. Single-crystal structural analyses combined with powder X-ray diffraction and differential scanning calorimetry experiments demonstrate that the selectivity arises from the different stabilities of guest-loaded BrP6 crystals. Moreover, the reversible transitions between guest-free and IPB-loaded structures indicate the preeminent recycling performance of BrP6 crystals.

Abstract:The separation of p-ethyltoluene (PET) and m-ethyltoluene (MET) is one of the most challenging steps to isolate PET from C9 aromatic compounds due to their very close boiling points. Many kinds of separation methods have been developed, but they involve low efficiency and great energy consumption. Herein, we investigate the adsorptive properties of perethylated pillar[5]arene (EtP5), perethylated pillar[6]arene (EtP6), perbromoethylated pillar[5]arene (BrP5) and perbromoethylated pillar[6]arene (BrP6) for ethyltoluene isomers. Results show that EtP6 and BrP5 crystals separate PET from a PET/MET equimolar mixture with purities of 95.4% and 92.0%, respectively. Both of them show no decrease in selectivity upon cycling for 5 times. Relatively, EtP5 and BrP6 crystals fail in this separation due to poor PET capture ability and low selectivity, respectively.
Application of ethoxy pillar[6]arene crystal material in selective adsorption of heterocyclic compound

Abstract:The invention discloses an application of an ethoxy pillar[6]arene crystal material in selective adsorption of a heterocyclic compound. The heterocyclic compound is at least one of pyridine, 2-methylthiophene and 3-methylthiophene, and the structural formula of the ethoxypillar[6]arene crystal material is shown in the specification. The invention also discloses a separation method of toluene and the heterocyclic compound. The ethoxy pillar[6]arene crystal material is used for adsorbing and separating a mixture of toluene and the heterocyclic compound. The separation process is simple to operate, complex equipment is not needed, and the operation safety is good; rectification operation is not needed in separation, energy is saved, and production cost is reduced; and the adopted crystal material is high in stability and can be recycled, and the separation effect cannot be reduced.

Abstract:The adsorptive separation of ternary propyne (C3H4)/propylene (C3H6)/propane (C3H8) mixtures is of significant importance due to its energy efficiency. However, achieving this process using an adsorbent has not yet been accomplished. To tackle such a challenge, herein, we present a novel approach of fine-regulation of the gradient of gate-opening in soft nanoporous crystals. Through node substitution, an exclusive gate-opening to C3H4 (17.1 kPa) in NTU-65-FeZr has been tailored into a sequential response of C3H4 (1.6 kPa), C3H6 (19.4 kPa), and finally C3H8 (57.2 kPa) in NTU-65-CoTi, of which the gradient framework changes have been validated by in situ powder X-ray diffractions and modeling calculations. Such a significant breakthrough enables NTU-65-CoTi to sieve the ternary mixtures of C3H4/C3H6/C3H8 under ambient conditions, particularly, highly pure C3H8 (99.9%) and C3H6 (99.5%) can be obtained from the vacuum PSA scheme. In addition, the fully reversible structural change ensures no loss in performance during the cycling dynamic separations. Moving forward, regulating gradient gate-opening can be conveniently extended to other families of soft nanoporous crystals, making it a powerful tool to optimize these materials for more complex applications.

Abstract:Trianglimine ( TI ) and trianglamine ( TA ) macrocycles offer an efficient adsorptive molecular sieving strategy to separate toluene ( Tol ) from an equimolar mixture of Tol and methylcyclohexane ( MCH ) with 98.3% and 96.4% selectivity, respectively. Selective separation is achieved through the intrinsic cavity or extrinsic channel within the crystalline molecular absorbents, driven by C–H⋯π and π⋯π interactions. Moreover, TI and TA exhibit exceptional recyclability, highlighting their potential for sustainable chemical separation processes.

Desolvated perethylated pillar[5]arene crystals (EtP5α) with a nonporous character selectively adsorb 1-pentene (1-Pe) over its positional isomer 2-pentene (2-Pe), leading to a structural change from EtP5α to 1-Pe loaded structure (1-Pe@EtP5). The purity of 1-Pe reaches 98.7% in just one cycle and EtP5α can be reused without losing separation performance.
