Abstract:PurposeThe purpose of this study is to identify the dynamic parameters of journal bearings in asymmetric rotor systems without additional test runs or excitations.Design/methodology/approachAn asymmetric rotor-bearing test rig was set up for the identification experiment. Comparations were made between the measured response of the asymmetric rotor and the symmetric rotor. The mathematical model of the asymmetric rotor is established by the finite element method. The identification algorithm is based on the model of the rotor and the measured vibration response to identify bearing parameters. The influence of modeling error and measurement noise on the identification results are numerically analyzed. The dynamic parameters of the journal bearings under different rotational speeds are identified and compared with the theoretical values calculated by the perturbation method.FindingsThe experiment results show that the vibration characteristics of the asymmetric rotor and the symmetric rotor are different. The numerical evaluation of the identification algorithm shows that the algorithm is accurate and has good robustness to modeling error and measurement noise. The identified dynamic parameters agree reasonably well with the parameters derived from the theoretical bearing model.Originality/valueThe proposed identification method uses the unique vibration characteristics of asymmetric rotors to identify the bearing dynamic parameters. Abstract:Experimentation is an effective approach to study the dynamic coefficients of journal bearings because experimental results are more reliable than theoretical calculations. Dynamic coefficients identification based on the unbalance response is more easily implemented than other experimental methods because of its independence from external exciting devices. However, this method may involve an ill-conditioned matrix problem, which increases algorithm complexity and decreases the precision of identification results. In this paper, a novel method is proposed to avoid ill-posed problems in the coefficient identification of circular journal bearings based on the unbalance response. The main approach used to overcome the ill-conditioned matrix problem is the introduction of four complementary equations that are uncorrelated with the dynamic equations derived from the unbalance response. Two relational expressions between damping are deduced from the Reynolds equation, and the other two relations between stiffness are obtained from the Taylor expansion of static forces acting on journal bearings. With the use of the four complementary relations, the identification matrix has a low condition number, and the identification of circular journal bearing dynamic coefficients can be easily implemented. Numerical experiments on two-axial groove journal bearings are used to analyze the condition number and identification error as well as verify the efficacy and accuracy of this method. The results show that the proposed method has a good identification capability with high precision and low condition number in solving the identification problems of journal bearings.

Abstract:A special rotor-journal bearing system under large and dynamic loads is studied in this paper, which originates from the rotary compressor. It's a flexible system because of the slender shaft and two thin wall bearing housings.It is considered as a fluid-structure interaction problem. The finite element method is applied to approach the rotor system, bearing housings and nonlinear fluid films. The coupling equations are resolved with Newton-Raphson method. Based on the method, the dynamic behaviors of the system with different balancing configurations at different speeds are analyzed.

Abstract:Rotor bearing support system is widely applied in rotating machinery .Its dynamics has a great impact on the normal operation of rotating machinery.Based on the dynamical equation, the nonlinear dynamical behavior conducted by dual delay bearing rotor system under active control is deduced.And the movement locus of the rolling bearing journal center before and af-ter the active control is also analyzed and compared .It is showed that the vibration of bearing rotor system would be influenced by delaying control and the vibration amplitude as well as the bearing failures can be reduced by appropriate control methods .

Abstract:For dynamic analysis of the Active Magnetic Bearing (AMB)-rotor system via the theory and method of the tradition-al rotor dynamics ,the equivalent stiffness and the equivalent damping are the important parameters for representing the sup-port characteristic of AMB and must be made certain .The methods for measuring the equivalent stiffness and the equivalent damping of AMB have been proposed in literatures . However ,most of them were based on the single degree of freedom (DOF) model or the multi-DOF rigid rotor model .In this study ,a measuring method is proposed by means of parameter iden-tification ,which is employed in the AMB-flexible rotor system .By condensation of degrees of freedom (DOF) in the finite ele-ment rotor model ,which includes the static force equivalence or the dynamic force equivalence ,the whole DOFs can be reduced to some certain DOFs and the quantity of the unknowns in the model is decreased .The relationship between the excitation and the response is extracted from the condensed rotor model .The parameter identification equations are obtained in the conditions of the AMB excitation and the additional weight excitation .By numerical simulation ,the equivalent stiffness and the equivalent damping of the AMB support are effectively identified and the possible problems are analyzed .

Abstract:This article provides a dynamic model of a cylindrical roller bearing–rotor system by combining the finite element method of the rotor and the interaction between the components of the bearing to study the dynamic response of the rotor with asymmetric support mode. The shaft is discretized by beam elements with five degrees of freedom. The bearing inner ring is consolidated with the journal of the shaft. The simulation results show that variable compliance vibration can stimulate resonance of the rotor in the sub-critical speed region. The variable compliance vibration of the rolling bearings does not occur synchronously on both sides of the asymmetric supported rotor. The increase in radial load and clearance exacerbates variable compliance vibration, while rotor imbalance has a smaller impact on variable compliance vibration. Usually, the presented coupled model can be applied to the comprehensive analysis of the vibration characteristics of all components in any cylindrical roller bearing–rotor system.

Abstract:The investigation of journal rotation and bearing surface waviness on the dynamic performance of aerostatic journal bearings is presented in this paper. The linear perturbation theory and an iterative procedure are proposed to solve the unsteady Reynolds equation. The bearing dynamic stiffness and dynamic damping under various operating parameters are numerical calculated. The results show that journal rotation can play an important role in bearing dynamic performance. The vertical principal stiffness and principal damping of the pure aerostatic journal bearing have a significant dependence on perturbation rotational speed. The influence of surface waviness on bearing dynamic characteristics is notable. With the growth of the wave's amplitude, the absolute values of dynamic stiffness and dynamic damping can be increased clearly.

Abstract:Aerostatic bearings are widely used in high-precision devices. Partial arc annular-thrust aerostatic porous journal bearings are a prominent type of aerostatic bearings, which carry both radial and axial loads and provide high load-carrying capacity, low air consumption, and relatively low cost. Spindle shaft tilting is a resource-demanding challenge in numerical modeling because it involves a 3D air flow. In this study, the air flow problem was solved using a COMSOL software, and the dynamic coefficients for tilting degrees of freedom were obtained using finite differences. The obtained results exhibit significant coupling between the tilting motion in the x-and y-directions: cross-coupled coefficients can achieve 20% of the direct coefficient for stiffness and 50% for damping. In addition, a nonlinear behavior can be expected, because the tilting motion within 3°, tilting velocities within 0.0012°/s, and relative eccentricity of 0.2 have effects as large as 20% for direct stiffness and 100% for cross-coupled stiffness and damping. All dynamic coefficients were fitted with a polynomial of eccentricity, tilting, and tilting velocities in two directions, with a total of six parameters. The resulting fitting coefficient tables can be employed for the fast dynamic simulation of the rotor shaft carried on the proposed bearing type.

Abstract:The wave journal bearing was first reported by Dimofte in the early 1990's. The purpose of this literature is to study the dynamic behavior of a hydrodynamic wave journal bearing with geometry parameters. It is found that the dynamic performance is related to the design parameters including eccentricity ratio, wave number, wave amplitude ratio and wave position angle. The critical mass which indicates the stability of the bearing was also analyzed by the numerical method. The results obtained from the numerical analysis shows that the dynamic characteristics of the wave bearing could prefer a better performance and stability compares to the plain journal bearing under the certain operating conditions except the wave amplitude ratio is less than 0.05. The wave amplitude ratio plays an essential role on the wave bearing's stability performance. The critical mass jumps rapidly as the wave amplitude increases. The wave position angle of the wave bearing with a periods of 360/n <sub xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">w</sub> relies to the applied load effects the bearing's stability. It should be careful to determine the position angle for the particular wave amplitude ratio. The wave bearing's dynamic stability is significantly influenced by the wave number. Based on an overall consideration of various factors, a wave number of 2 is suitable for the small wave amplitude ratio.

Abstract:Purpose Asymmetric rotating machinery supported by oil film bearings is relatively common in practical applications. The purpose of this study is to propose a method for estimating the oil film parameters of the bearings in an asymmetric rotor-bearing system. Design/methodology/approach The proposed method requires the finite element model and translational displacement responses at the center of mass and bearings locations to form a regression equation to estimate the unknown parameters. Due to the transverse stiffness of the asymmetric rotor is not symmetrical, the analysis and parameter estimation procedures are performed in a rotating coordinate. Numerical simulations were carried out to illustrate the vibration characteristics of the asymmetric rotor system. The proposed method is applied to the simulated responses to estimate the assumed oil film parameters. The influence of the estimated parameter deviations on the rotor dynamic characteristics is discussed. Findings The vibration characteristics of asymmetric rotors are different from those of symmetrical rotors. The bearing parameters estimated by the proposed method are close to the assumed values, within a maximum error of 9%. The deviations of the estimated parameters have little effect on the vibration characteristic of the rotor system. Originality/value The proposed method does not require changing the rotational speed or applying additional excitation force to the rotor, which is suitable for the field test. Abstract:The nonlinear dynamic characteristic of journal gas bearings(self-acting gas bearing and hybrid gas bearing)-flexible rotors coupling system was studied theoretically by employing the orbit method in this paper.The multiple degree freedom model of the rotor system was established,solving the coupling with the Reynold equation(including the time terms) by applying alternating direction implict(ADI) method.Through numerical simulation,the nonlinear gas film forces,trajectory diagram,phase diagram,frequency spectrum,power spectrum,bifurcation diagram,vibration mode diagram and the equilibrium position diagram were obtained.As for the characteristic of the orbit method employed in this study,the methods of obtaining the nonlinear dynamic parameters were proposed.It indicates that the dynamic characteristics of journal gas bearings-rotor system and whirling instability of the gas film could be depicted commendably.

Abstract:Estimation of the dynamic parameters of bearings is essential in order to be able to interpret the performance of rotating machinery. In this paper, we propose a method to estimate the dynamic parameters of the bearings in a flexible rotor system. By utilizing the electromagnetic excitation generated by a built-in PM motor and finite element (FE) modeling of the rotor, safe, low-cost, and real-time monitoring of the bearing dynamics can be achieved. The radial excitation force is generated by injecting an alternating d-axis current into the motor windings. The FE model of the rotor and the measured frequency responses at the motor and bearing locations are used to estimate the dynamic parameters of the bearings. To evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method, numerical simulation and experiments were carried out on a flexible rotor system combined with a bearingless motor (BELM) having both motor windings and suspension windings. The numerical simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can accurately estimate the dynamic parameters of the bearings. In the experiment, the estimates made when utilizing the excitation force generated by the motor windings are compared with the estimates made when utilizing the excitation force generated by the suspension windings. The results show that most of the stiffness and damping coefficients for the two experiments are in good agreement, within a maximum error of 8.92%. The errors for some coefficients are large because the base values of these coefficients are small in our test rig, so these coefficients are sensitive to deviations. The natural frequencies calculated from the dynamic parameters estimated from the two experiments are also in good agreement, within a maximum relative error of 3.04%. The proposed method is effective and feasible for turbomachines directly connected to motors, which is highly significant for field tests.

Abstract:A test rig was built to study the performances of new compliant aerodynamic foil journal air bearings.This paper introduced an experimental method to identify eight linear dynamic coefficients of the foil gas bearings under different excitation frequencies.The experiment was performed when the static load and the rotating speed were 60 N and 9 000 rpm,respectively.The disturbed speed and acceleration of the journal center were obtained by the method of center difference of its displacement.In time domain,the linear stiffness and damping coefficients of each excitation frequency were calculated by means of least mean square.Finally,the effect of the excitation frequency on the dynamic characteristics of the bearing was investigated.Experimental results show that the vibration orbit of the journal center is elliptic.And with the excitation frequency increasing,the perturbation amplitudes of the journal center increase,but the direct terms of the stiffness and damping coefficients of the bearing decrease.The cross-coupling terms change little with the changes of dynamic excitation frequency,and their values are much smaller than those of the direct terms.When the excitation frequency is equal to the working frequency of the rotor,because of the effect of the components of the working frequency,the perturbation amplitude of the journal center increase significantly and the direct terms of the stiffness and damping coefficients are much smaller than those of other excitation frequencies.

Abstract:In order to study lubrication characteristics of an elliptical bearing and the nonlinear dynamic behaviors of a rotor-bearing system,an unsteady flow field was calculated by employing a new dynamic mesh approach based on structured grid.A weak-coupling calculation between oil film in a journal bearing and rotor dynamic behaviors was realized by transferring data between two domains.An analysis was performed to study the transient operation process of journal bearings with different structures using their inner lubrication flow field.Through discussion and calculation for influences of rotating speed,amount of unbalance and structural parameters on the bearing-rotor system's working performance,it was shown that the effects of the tip clearance on the stability is larger than those of the side clearance;the whirling center of the journal is related to not only rotating speed but also dynamic load;with increase in amount of unbalance,the whirling center is close to the coordinate origin to cause a decrease in the stability margin.The results provided a theoretical basis for studying dynamic characteristics of elliptical bearings and stability of a rotor-bearing system.

Abstract:In the rotary compressor, the rolling piston and the contacted rotor-journal bearing system are main moving components. They suffer very large periodically varying loads introduced by the inertia force, the contact force and the gas force. These loads change rapidly with speed variation of the compressor. They always lead to serious vibration of the system, and then result in abrasion and performance reduction. In this paper, the dynamic behavior of the rotor-journal bearing system were calculated by solving three-dimensional numerical model using finite element method, and the vibration characteristics of the system were investigated according to the calculation results. The natural frequencies and vibration modes were obtained. The stress, displacement and axis orbit of the rotor center were calculated considering the speed variation of the motor. Via the established numerical model, vibration characteristics of a newly designed compressor can be predicted, and optimization can be done to reduce the vibration.

Abstract:Aiming at the rotor test rig,the rotor-bearing system is modeled for different types of lubrication bearings,the dynamical behaviors of the rotor system are then investigated.The dynamical stiffness and damping coefficients for different bearing key parameters are also studied.Via comparison,the dynamical supporting characteristics under different bearing parameters are discussed.With consideration of the different foundation support stiffness,the critical speeds of the rotor-bearing system are also investigated.

Abstract:Purpose High power and speed are new demands for rotating machinery which needs the journal bearings with high dynamic characteristics. The critical speed of the rotor-bearing system is one of the most significant parameters to evaluate the dynamic characteristics. This paper aims to investigate the theoretical and experimental analysis of a rotor system supported by large diameter elliptical bearings. Design/methodology/approach To obtain the theoretical and experimental support for rotor-bearing system design, dynamic characteristics theoretical analysis based on the finite difference method is given and an experiment focuses on critical speed identification is carried out. Findings The theoretical calculation results indicate that the critical speed is near to 800 rpm and there is no large vibration amplitude round working speed (1,500 rpm). Using the test bench in the factory unit, vibration data including three experimental processes are obtained. According to the vibration data, the critical speed is identified which also indicates that it is stable when working at 1,500 rpm. Originality/value The design method for the rotor system supported by large diameter elliptical bearing can be obtained by the theoretical and experimental results shown in this paper.
