Abstract:Characteristic mode theory is usually formulated on top of the electric field integral equation. We present in this paper a combined field integral equation based characteristic mode theory which is immune to the internal resonance corruption when the characteristic modes of closed perfectly conducting surfaces are iteratively solved for. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed formulation. This work may offer efficient solutions to characteristic mode analysis which involves electrically large closed surfaces.
Characteristics of surface waves in anisotropic left-handed materials

Abstract:We report the coexistence of TE and TM surface modes in certain same frequency domain at the interface between one isotropic regular medium and another biaxially anistotropic left-handed medium. The conditions for the existence of TE and TM polarized surface waves in biaxially anisotropic left-handed materials are identified, respectively. The Poynting vector and the energy density associated with surface modes are calculated. Depending on the system parameters, either TE or TM surface modes can have the time averaged Poynting vector directed to or opposite to the mode phase velocity. It is seen that the characteristics of surface waves in biaxially anisotropic left-handed media are significantly different from that in isotropic left-handed media.

Abstract:In this paper, a characteristic mode methodology available for the analysis of composite bodies of metallic and dielectric material is developed. It is based on the EFIE-PMCHWT surface integral equation to formulate the related eigenproblem. The resultant eigenvalues and eigencurrents offer clear physical insight into the radiation and scattering mechanisms of composite metallic-dielectric bodies.

Abstract:Based on the unified strength theory a unified characteristic theory for solving plastic plane stress problems is established. This new characteristic theory takes account of the effect of the intermediate principal stress of various materials and reveals the relations among the different characteristic methods. Those characteristic methods on the basis of different strength theories, such as Tresca, Mises and Mohr-Coulonb, are the special cases (Tresca and Mohr-Coulomb) or linear approximation (Miss) of the proposed theory system. Besides, a series of new characteristic methods can be got from it. The unified characteristic theory can be adopted for most materials. It agrees with the experiments better than the previous characteristic methods.

Abstract:Based on the unified strength criterion, a characteristic theory for solving the plastic plane stress and plane strain problems of an ideal rigid-plastic body is established in this paper which can be adapted for a wide variety of materials. Through this new theory, a suitable characteristic method for material of interest can be obtained and the relations among different sorts of characteristic methods can be revealed. Those characteristic methods on the basis of different strength criteria, such as Tresca, von Mises, Mohr-Coulomb, twin shear (TS) and generalized twin shear (GTS), are the special cases (Tresca, Mohr-Coulomb, TS, and GTS) or linear approximation (von Mises) of the proposed theory. Moreover, a series of new characteristic methods can be easily derived from it. Using the proposed theory, the influence of yield criterion on the limit analysis is analyzed. Two examples are given to illustrate the application of this theory.

Abstract:In this paper, characteristic mode (CM) formulations are developed from surface integral equation (SIE) for the modal analysis of dielectric coated conducting bodies. The electric field integral equation-Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington, Wu, and Tsai SIE is used for modeling the dielectric coated conducting bodies. By ensuring the field continuity on the interface boundary, two types of generalized eigenvalues equations are formulated to determine the resonant behavior of the dielectric coated conducting bodies. Following Poynting's theorem, the resultant eigenvalues indicate the ratio of the imaginary and real part of the complex power for each CM. Zero eigenvalues indicate the resonance in dielectric coated conducting bodies. The corresponding modal fields provide with clear physical insights into the radiation/scattering mechanisms. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed CM formulations.

Abstract:Donnell’s thin shell theory and basic equations based on the wave propagation method discussed in detail here, is used to investigate the natural frequencies of thin finite length circular cylindrical shells under various boundary conditions. Mode shapes are drawn to explain the circumferential mode numbern and axial mode numberm, and the natural frequencies are calculated numerically and compared with those of FEM (finite element method) to confirm the reliability of the analytical solution. The effects of relevant parameters on natural frequencies are discussed thoroughly. It is shown that for long thin shells the method is simple, accurate and effective.

Abstract:Characteristics of surface modes at the interface between an isotropic medium and an indefinite medium that has a dispersion relation of hyperbolic form are studied. Four cases for the isotropic medium, including normal, left-handed, magnetic (with negative permeability), and metallic media, are considered. The conditions for the existence of surface modes in each case are analyzed in detail, and the results are expressed explicitly, indicating that the existence of surface modes is determined by the nature of the indefinite medium as well as the orientation of the boundary surface of this anisotropic medium. The energy flows associated with the surface modes are also discussed.

Abstract:An extended precise integration model for analysis of thermo-mechanical behavior of multilayered transversely isotropic materials in Cartesian coordinate system is established in this paper. From the governing equations of plane strain and three-dimensional transversely isotropic thermo-elastic materials, ordinary differential equations are derived by employing Laplace–Fourier transform. An extended precise integration model is built and solved in the transformed domain by extending the precise integration method (PIM) to multilayered thermo-elastic material system, and the actual solutions are obtained by adopting numerical quadrature schemes for the Laplace–Fourier transform inversion. The accuracy and feasibility of the proposed model is demonstrated by selected numerical examples, and then the influences of heat source’s shapes, layering, mechanical and thermal parameters of the transversely isotropic material on thermo-mechanical response are investigated.

Abstract:Novel characteristic mode (CM) formulations for penetrable objects based on explicit separation of dissipation power from the total active power and use of single surface integral equation (SSIE) are proposed. Due to the separation of the dissipation power, the right-hand side of the generalized eigenvalue equation can be set to be exclusively related to the radiated power, which permits the far-field pattern by different CMs to be orthogonal whether the material is lossless or not. The use of SSIE allows both the equivalent electric and magnetic currents to be expressed by a single effective electric or magnetic current, so that the conventional inverse to express the equivalent electric current by the equivalent magnetic current or vice versa is avoided, which is favorable for frequency sweeping simulations. Numerical examples for verifications are provided by comparing with acknowledged results or measured data.

Abstract:As we all know, the merits of characteristic mode (CM) theory in antenna designs and optimizations have been well recognized in our EM community. In this paper, the scattering analysis for dielectric coated conducting bodies will be reconsidered using the modal expansion method from a novel CM formulation we developed very recently. Thus the contribution of each mode to the total scattering response can be readily obtained. It offers deep physical insight into the scattering mechanism and valuable information on how to control and adjust scattering pattern. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the accuracy of the proposed modal expansion method in scattering analysis.

Abstract:The characteristic mode (CM) theory for analyzing the resonant behaviors of arbitrarily shaped dielectric bodies is further discussed based on the well-known PMCHW formulation. A careful investigation into the CM formulation developed in the 1970s finds that it fails to provide modal solutions with clear underlying physics for the dielectric resonators. To fix this problem, we propose a new generalized eigenvalue equation involving only the electric current on the equivalent surface. Moreover, a generalized eigenvalue equation involving only the magnetic current is also proposed for the CM analysis of the dielectric resonators. It is actually a dual CM formulation of the previous one. The two generalized eigenvalue equations are independent of each other and yield exactly the same CMs. The CMs can accurately describe the resonant behavior and modal fields of a dielectric resonator. Numerical results are presented to validate the proposed CM formulations.

Abstract:Characteristic mode (CM) theory is widely used nowadays for analysis and design of radiation and scattering problems. In this paper, we discuss the recent developments of advanced characteristic mode theory and its applications in complex electromagnetic (EM) problems. Following the deep physical insights into the radiation and scattering mechanisms of complex electromagnetic open problems, the effective use of CM allows antenna designs and scattering control in a systematic way. This is also what the latest progress of advanced CM theory developments made at the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) can really benefit the EM community.

Abstract:The characteristic mode (CM) theory has been widely recognized as a powerful tool for radiation/scattering analysis and optimization designs. As a natural extension of PEC CM theory and dielectric material CM theory, we propose a novel CM formulation for the systematic analysis of dielectric coated conducting bodies. The newly developed CM formulation bases on the EFIE-PMCHWT equation. Numerical cases show the validity and accuracy of the proposed CM formulation in calculating characteristic currents and characteristic fields and predicting resonant frequencies.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the electromagnetic theory of characteristic modes for general homogeneous material bodies using surface integral equations (SIEs), which are computationally more efficient than using volume integral equations (VIEs). However, the generalized eigenvalue equations (GEEs) based on SIEs are prone to generate spurious or extra modes, unlike their counterparts based on VIEs. In this work, several variant SIE-based GEEs are proposed to eliminate the spurious/extra modes and improve the numerical performances. These variant GEEs share a common point that the reactive power operator related to the material domain should be removed from the left-hand sides of GEEs by explicitly enforcing the boundary condition, because it seems sensitive to incur unwanted modes. These variant GEEs are diverse in choosing the active power operator related to the material domain on the right-hand sides to suit different medium parameters, which even can be dropped directly for lossless cases. Numerical results show that these variant GEEs do not generate spurious/extra resonant modes in observed frequency range, and at least one of the variants would have acceptable numerical accuracy.

Abstract:Characteristic mode (CM) theory has become a valuable tool in the design of antennas and analysis of scattering. Well-content CM solvers that are immune to spurious modes and efficient for frequency sweeping are still in need, especially for composite structures containing lossy material. In this letter, an alternative procedure for CM extraction of arbitrarily combined metallic-dielectric bodies is presented based on using the surface integral equations. The spurious modes are suppressed through the elimination of dependent unknowns, and the efficiency is raised by using a single effective current instead of both the equivalent electric and magnetic currents in the conventional methods. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the viability of the proposed approach.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach for computing substructure characteristic modes. This method leverages electromagnetic scattering matrices and spherical wave expansion to directly decompose electromagnetic fields. Unlike conventional methods that rely on the impedance matrix generated by the method of moments (MoM), our technique simplifies the problem into a small-scale ordinary eigenvalue problem, improving numerical dynamics and computational efficiency. We have developed analytical substructure characteristic mode solutions for a scenario involving two spheres, which can serve as benchmarks for evaluating other numerical solvers. A key advantage of our method is its independence from specific MoM frameworks, allowing for the use of various numerical methods. This flexibility paves the way for substructure characteristic mode decomposition to become a universal frequency-domain technique.

Other than its great potential in antenna designs and optimizations, this paper discusses the applications of the CM theory in the analysis of scattering from three-dimensional arbitrarily shaped dielectric bodies using a novel characteristic mode formulation we proposed very recently. It is a powerful tool in the investigation of the contributions of each mode to the scattering pattern. Such investigation provides useful information for further scattering pattern controlling. Numerical results are presented to validate the approach in scattering analysis.

Abstract:Recent years, the theory of characteristic modes has emerged as a powerful analysis technique in antenna engineering, providing a means to reveal the natural resonant properties of objects and providing a variety of modal parameters. Based on these modal parameters, advanced techniques have been developed based on the theory of characteristic modes to address a wide range of electromagnetic radiation, scattering, and coupling problems. This review provides an overview of some of the latest characteristic mode-based techniques for wideband design, circular polarization, radiation pattern control, scattering control, and mutual coupling control. In addition, future perspectives are discussed, highlighting the potential of characteristic modes for addressing even more complex electromagnetics problems.
Alternative Surface Integral Equation-Based Characteristic Mode Analysis of Dielectric Resonator Antennas

Abstract:Dielectric resonator antennas are widely used in wireless communication systems. A theory of characteristic modes (CMs) for modal analysis of dielectric resonators is highly demanded. Although a few earlier studies had proposed CM theory for modelling scattering from dielectric bodies, the physical characteristics of these CMs and their eigenvalues are not as clear as that of those for conducting bodies. This study revisits the CM theory for dielectric resonators. Following the Poynting's theorem and the PMCHWT (Poggio, Miller, Chang, Harrington, Wu, and Tsai) equation, two generalised eigenvalue equations are formulated. The resultant eigenvalues possess clear physical meanings that are the same as those of perfectly electrically conducting problems. In addition, other possible CM formulations based on the PMCHWT equation are also discussed. Mathematical proofs are given in the Appendix to show how to formulate CM theory to physically describe the fundamental resonant modes of dielectric resonators. Numerical results are given to show the proposed CM formulations are effective in solving resonant frequencies and modal fields for dielectric resonators.
