Abstract:Cropland fragmentation contributes to low productivity and high abandonment risk. Using spatial statistics on a detailed land use map, we show that 10% of Chinese croplands have no potential to be consolidated for large-scale farming (>10 ha) owing to spatial constraints. These fragmented croplands contribute only 8% of total crop production while using 15% of nitrogen fertilizers, leading to 12% of fertilizer loss in China. Optimizing the cropping structure of fragmented croplands to meet animal food demand in China can increase animal food supply by 19%, equivalent to increasing cropland proportionally. This crop-switching approach would lead to a 10% and 101% reduction in nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions, respectively, resulting in a net benefit of US$ 7 billion yr(-1). If these fragmented croplands were relocated to generate large-scale farming units, livestock, vegetable and fruit production would be increased by 8%, 3% and 14%, respectively, and reactive nitrogen and greenhouse gas emissions would be reduced by 16% and 5%, respectively, resulting in a net benefit of US$ 44 billion yr(-1). Both solutions could be used to achieve synergies between food security, economic benefits and environmental protection through increased agricultural productivity, without expanding the overall cropland area.

Abstract:The fragmentation of construction land due to decentralised urban development, disorderly mixed land use, and large-scale transportation infrastructure poses a threat to urban integrity. There is a need to quantify the fragmentation level in a consistent way for inclusion in planning-related decisions. In the context of China's urban sprawl, this study develops a quantitative and intuitive index approach that planners can use to analyse multiple fragmentation features of construction land within urban areas. The approach can be used in planning policy reviews for timely land-use assessment and can be integrated into urban planning processes for developing strategic land-use scenarios. The method was applied in Shunde, a typical urban area in southern China, and construction-land fragmentation and its impacts on environmental quality were analysed. The results show that the entire built-up area in Shunde displays a high level of fragmentation. Patches of industrial and rural residence have been identified specifically higher fragmentation level. The shortage of available construction land makes land consolidation within built-up areas very important in planning Shunde's future development. Moreover, the land shortage requires the progressive reduction of construction land fragmentation. The results of the study also indicate that although land fragmentation has been affected by transportation infrastructure and the existence of rivers and hills in this region, decentralised decisions from hierarchical local governance regimes have greatly exacerbated this situation. Shunde provides examples of typical land-use problems associated with quasi-urbanised regions in China; construction-land fragmentation is a greater determinant for the sustainable development of urban and rural areas than construction-land growth.
Spatial-temporal characteristics of cropland distribution and its landscape fragmentation in China

Abstract:Analysing China's cropland changes highlights the intertwined dynamics of urbanization, industrialization, and ecological policies, offering insights into cropland efficiency and advancing agricultural modernization. This study analysed China's county-level cropland area and landscape fragmentation from 1990 to 2021 using land use data. The results revealed an uneven cropland distribution in China, which was mainly concentrated in regions such as Northeast China, the North China Plain, the Sichuan Basin, and the Middle-Lower Yangtze Plains, with most cropland occurring north of the Qinling Mountains-Huaihe River boundary. In the past three decades, China's cropland area has decreased by 8.68 million ha. Approximately 72.14% of the counties experienced a decline, and 24 provinces reported a net loss. Notably, there was large-scale land use type replacement in China, which was primarily manifested as the spatial displacement of cropland with forest, grassland, and impervious surfaces. As a result, the net reduction in cropland accounted for only 22.24% of the total cropland decrease. From 1990 to 2021, 52.04% of China's county-level cropland exhibited no significant changes in total area (TA) or patch density (PD), maintaining a stable cropland landscape. A total of 20.70% of the counties had significant TA reductions without PD changes, primarily in the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain. Counties without TA changes but significant PD declines represented 11.72%, mainly distributed in transitional zones of the second and third steps of China's terrain, the Loess Plateau, the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, and some areas of the Southeast Hills. Counties with significant TA reductions and PD increases accounted for 7.79%, primarily found in the border areas between Henan and Anhui, as well as Jiangsu. Thus, whether cropland loss in China over the past 30 years has led to increased fragmentation has shown clear spatial heterogeneity. This study provides scientific support for guiding cropland utilization to enhance sustainability and resilience in China.

Abstract:Grasping cropland abandonment patterns in China can help protect croplands, thereby ensuring the perpetuation of nationwide food security. However, the pattern of long-term cropland abandonment at the national scale remains limited. Here, we investigate the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of cropland abandonment across China during 1990-2019 by integrating continuous long-term series of land cover, natural factors, and socioeconomic data. We find that the mean abandoned cropland area is 2.34 x 104 km2 per year. The spatial pattern of cropland and natural factors are prime drivers of cropland abandonment, but there is a substantial variation across agricultural regions. Further analysis suggests that annual food loss due to cropland abandonment is about 7.94 billion kilograms, which could feed 19.85 million people. These findings allow for a better understanding of the spatial heterogeneity and driving forces of cropland abandonment patterns, and inspire to govern global cropland abandonment and formulate relevant policies.

Abstract:Farmland fragmentation is a typical feature of arable land use in the economies dominated by smallholder production mode, and scientific evaluation of farmland fragmentation is an effective and crucial process to find and solve problems. Farmland fragmentation, as a kind of long-standing physiographic landscape and agricultural economic phenomenon under the comprehensive effect of "human-land-property rights", not only contains the scale status and spatial distribution of cultivated patches but also is featured with farming and tenure right. However, the theoretical interpretation of the multidimensional characteristics of farmland fragmentation was insufficient, and it was rare to evaluate the farmland fragmentation based on plot scale. To this end, an evaluation framework of farmland fragmentation with four dimensions and 12 indicators was constructed in this paper. Moreover, regarding Minqing County located in China's southeast coast as a case, empirical research was thus conducted. The findings indicated that the physical properties of farmland patches were depicted through scale fragmentation. Spatial fragmentation represented the spatial distribution of farmland patches. Farming fragmentation revealed agricultural production and management differences while tenure fragmentation embodied the tenure rights segmentation induced by the land distribution system. Farmland fragmentation consolidation was an effective way to solve these issues, and some differential tactics should be conducted in accordance with the path of "zoning types-obstacle factors-consolidation directions-treatment measures".

Abstract:Here,we describe research on farmland fragmentation using the summary and comparison analysis approaches.The definition of farmland fragmentation,main research fields and measurement methods are reviewed.The connotation of farmland fragmentation is clear and has been widely recognized,but methods for determining fragmentation require further work.Farmland fragmentation research in China mainly focuses on the causes and its effect on agricultural production,particularly the negative impacts.The relationship between farmland fragmentation and land consolidation has received increasing attention;the relationship between farmland fragmentation and land transfer less so.Research in this area mainly draws on economic research methods,and geographical spatial analyses are absent.Several suggestions are made,including additional comparative studies across different areas based on different economic and social backgrounds;strengthening research on the relationship between farmland fragmentation and the comprehensive regulation of rural land;and adoption of RS and GIS methods.

Abstract:Fragmentation, as one of the most distinct characteristics of agricultural landscapes worldwide, has resulted in a diversity of ecological consequences. It remains as a gap in the literature on how provisioning service changes in association with agricultural fragmentation and land use management. Addressing such a gap at a national level should provide essential insights for policymakers. This paper identifies the essential metrics from a set of landscape metrics for describing agricultural fragmentation and further develops an integrated fragmentation index (IFI). Using the IFI, spatiotemporal dynamics of agricultural fragmentation across Chinese cities from 2010 to 2017 are captured. In particular, an increasing trend of fragmentation is identified and southern China is characterized by more fragmented agricultural landscapes than the other parts. Spatial regression, with the Cobb-Douglas Production Function as the theoretical basis, is employed to quantify the relationships among provisioning service, agricultural fragmentation, and land use management. It is discovered that landscape fragmentation would impair the supply of the provisioning service and sustainable land use management regulates the provisioning service in a positive way. We argue that alleviating the landscape fragmentation issue would not be achieved with simple measurement. Cooperation of a series of administrative acts, such as land reclamation, land use transfer, household registration system reform and improvement of employment and welfare system, should be fundamental and practical approaches. The present study demonstrates a novel methodological framework to unravel the effect of agricultural fragmentation on provisioning services, which should be useful for understanding the complex human-ecosystem interactions.

Does Cropland Threaten Urban Land Use Efficiency in the Peri-Urban Area? Evidence from Metropolitan Areas in China

Abstract:In recent decades, cropland policies have been recognized as crucial tools for ensuring food security and managing urban growth. However, whether cropland conservation undermines urban land use efficiency (ULUE) in peri-urban areas has not been adequately studied. This study investigated the impact of cropland on ULUE in the peri-urban areas of 36 rapidly urbanizing metropolitan areas in China. Multiple open-source datasets were used, including land use, land cover, three-dimensional building structure, and nighttime light (NTL) data. Urban construction land patterns (infilling, edge, outlying) were categorized to examine the intermediate role of urban form in the correlation between cropland and ULUE. The findings indicated that: (1) high proportion of cropland area within the peri-urban areas significantly undermined ULUE; (2) although the conservation of cropland is conducive to compact urban growth, the infilling expansion pattern that compelled by cropland conservation would not sustain intensive human activity; and (3) reducing the spatial separation between conserved cropland and urban construction land was conducive to the dual objectives of protecting cropland and promoting ULUE. This study contributed to the development of a nuanced understanding of cropland protection policies that balance national food security and urbanization efficiency.

Abstract:For the purpose of keeping abreast the development of farmland fragmentation analysis in China,this paper gives a comprehensive description of the research on farmland fragmentation by using the summary and comparison analysis approaches.The analysis is organized from three aspects flowed as the definition of farmland fragmentation,the main fields concerned by farmland fragmentation and the measurement method.The main features about the research of farmland fragmentation go as follows.Firstly,the connotation of farmland fragmentation is clear and has been widely recognized,but the measurement method for the degree of fragmentation still needs further study.Secondly,the farmland fragmentation research in China mainly focuses on the causes and the effects on agricultural production.Among them,the research on negative effects of agricultural production is most sufficient.Furthermore,the relationship between farmland fragmentation and land consolidation attracted more attention.The research on the relationship between farmland fragmentation and land transfer is quite inadequate.The last but not the least,the study on land fragmentation mainly uses economic research methods,such as production function and regression analysis.Geographical spatial analysis method and the method of landscape ecology have not been used in the research.Besides,some suggestions on further studies of decoupling are put forward in this paper.These suggestions include giving more concern on comparative study of different areas based on different economic and social background;strengthening the study on relationship between farmland fragmentation and comprehensive regulation of rural land;in order to expand the research angle and research content,trying to combine the discipline of geography with landscape ecology,especially using the methods of RS and GIS in farmland fragmentation.
Identifying the driving forces of cultivated land fragmentation in China

Abstract:Cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) has severely affected China's agricultural production efficiency, large-scale operations, agricultural modernization, and food security. Exploring the spatiotemporal evolution patterns and driving forces of CLF is crucial for agricultural modernization. However, the driving forces of CLF in different agricultural regions in China still need to be clarified. In this study, CLF was measured in 2000, 2010, and 2020 based on remote sensing data with landscape pattern metrics, and the driving forces of spatial differentiation were detected based on a geographical detector model. The overall cultivated land area has slightly declined during the study period while the CLF has intensified. CLF showed significant spatial autocorrelation, with CLF increased-cultivated land decreased (2000 to 2010) and CLF decreased-cultivated land decreased (2010 to 2020). The contribution rate of land use intensity on CLF was the highest among all agricultural regions, excluding the Qinghai Tibet Plateau. In contrast, the contribution rates of other factors significantly varied across agricultural regions. These findings provide scientific support in formulating policies to conserve cultivated land for sustainable use of agricultural resources and CLF management in China.
Changes in Cultivated Land Loss and Landscape Fragmentation in China from 2000 to 2020

Abstract:Cultivated land area and fragmentation are two crucial elements that influence food production in China. However, few studies have analyzed the fine-grained changes in both the area and the fragmentation of cultivated land from a national perspective. Using a 30 m annual land-cover dataset with the help of cultivated land area (CA) and a newly constructed coupling landscape fragmentation index (CLFI), this research identified the spatial distribution characteristics of both the area and the landscape fragmentation of cultivated land in Chinese counties and simultaneously analyzed the changes in the above two elements since the beginning of the 21st century. The results showed that the distribution pattern of CA in China's counties was large in the north and small in the south. During the first two decades of the 21st century, the total CA of China decreased, but the decrease rate decreased from 2.91% in 2000–2010 to 0.41% in 2010–2020; in contrast, the CLFI of China showed an increasing trend, but the increase rate also decreased, from 4.06% in 2000–2010 to 0.51% in 2010–2020. Spatially, from 2000 to 2010, there was an obvious reverse distribution pattern between counties with large CA changes and those with large CLFI changes; however, this pattern became less obvious from 2010 to 2020. Urban expansion, sloping land conversion programs and other ecological protection programs, and land development and consolidation programs were major causes of changes in the CA and CLFI across China. The findings of this research provide a data basis and scientific support for the protection and large-scale utilization of cultivated land, where this information is necessary to ensure food security.

Abstract:Measuring farmland fragmentation and its interactions with anthropogenic activities can advance our understanding of complexity in agricultural systems. Majority of previous studies focused on farmland ownership fragmentation rather than physical landscape fragmentation. This paper characterized the farmland landscape fragmentation dynamics in Tiaoxi watershed (China) from 1985 to 2013 using a set of variables (area-weighted mean patch area, patch density, area-weighted mean shape index, mean Euclidean nearest neighbor distance, splitting index, and effective mesh size). Four categories of anthropogenic drivers (demographic, economic, social and cultural, and scientific and technological) and their relative importance were quantified by multiple regression and variance partitioning. Results showed a linear increasing trend of farmland fragmentation in Tiaoxi watershed during the study period. Drivers for farmland fragmentation differed with variables. In general, non-agricultural population and migration population were the key demographic drivers, while road mileage and investment in real estate were the principal social drivers. Two groups of economic drivers were identified: one group included fruit and seafood production, another included per capita income and proportion of tertiary industry. Besides, education expenses increases and technological improvement could significantly reduce farmland fragmentation. Considering the relative importance for different categories of drivers, economy was the most influential driver; its joint influences with social and cultural drivers and those with scientific and technological drivers were relatively stronger. Does Land Tenure Fragmentation Aggravate Farmland Abandonment? Evidence from Big Survey Data in Rural China

Abstract:Farmland fragmentation is an important factor of farmland abandonment in China, including landscape fragmentation in biophysical conditions and tenure fragmentation in property conditions. Both farmland fragmentation has different effects and different management strategies. However, it is still unclear whether the farmland tenure fragmentation (FTF) aggravates farmland abandonment and its extent when the farmland landscape fragmentation (FLF) remains unchanged. Therefore, we combined the large-scale sample survey (5479 samples) and geographical analysis to distinguish FTF and FLF, and use logistic regression and Tobit regression model to analyze the impact of FTF on farmland abandonment. In addition, we take farmland transfer as a moderation variable to explore whether the farmland transfer significantly alleviates the abandonment of farmland. Here we show that the farmland abandonment rate decreased by 16.8% when the average plot area increased by 1 mu (1 mu = 666.67 m(2)) in China, and in the place where the extent of FLF is lower, the impact of FTF on farmland abandonment is greater. And farmland transfer plays a significant regulatory role between the FTF and the abandoned rate of farmland. This study helps to distinguish our understanding of the impact of FTF and FLF on farmland abandonment and provides a scientific basis for decision-makers to reduce the abandonment of farmland, ensure national food security, and promote rural revitalization.
Spatial Pattern of Cultivated Land Fragmentation in Mainland China: Characteristics, Dominant Factors, and Countermeasures

Abstract:Systematically recognizing spatial patterns and driving factors of cultivated land fragmentation is of great significance for the exploration of locally appropriate path to relieve cultivated land fragmentation. This study aims to estimate cultivated land density, mean patch size and area-weighted mean shape index to respectively indicate the characteristics of cultivated land fragmentation from three dimensions, namely, natural resource endowment, spatial partition, and convenience of utilization. The regional leading factors of cultivated land fragmentation are also analyzed. The results demonstrate that the distribution of cultivated land density is higher in Northern regions compared with those of southern regions. The significant positive correlation between cultivated land density and mean patch size is found to be universal across nearly all cities, exceeding differences in terrain, elevation, climate, soil, and social economic condition. For cities in the southern part of China, cultivated land of regular shape is partitioned to smaller blocks compared with irregular ones; alternatively, intensive and meticulous farming under small-scale agricultural operation leads to clusters with low mean patch size - low area-weighted mean shape index. Random forest model explains the impact of driving factors on cultivated land fragmentation, with an explanatory power ranging from 66% to 95%. The terrain factor emerges as the primary driver negatively affecting cultivated land density. Gross domestic product emerges as the dominant factor with a significant (p < 0.01) negative correlation to mean patch size for nearly all agricultural climatic zones. Terrain, gross domestic product and population is the most important factor affecting area-weighted mean shape index. Rural development degree influences correlation between dominant factors and cultivated land fragmentation. This study is greatly instructive for recognizing the spatial patterns of cultivated land fragmentation at the national scale and for exploring the barriers that impede regionally scaled cultivated land use.

Abstract:Cultivated land resources are crucial for food security and economic and social development. However, with the acceleration of urbanization and shifts in land use, cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) has emerged as a significant factor constraining the sustainable development of agriculture in China. As the most urbanized region, optimizing cultivated land resources and coordinating urban and rural development has become an urgent issue for rural sustainable development in Guangdong Province. This study analyzes the spatiotemporal characteristics of CLF in Guangdong Province from 2000 to 2020 using landscape pattern indices, CRITIC empowerment, and a multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR) model. The cultivated land fragmentation index (CLFI) for Guangdong Province reveals a fluctuating trend from 2000 to 2012, increasing from 0.453 in 2012 to 0.641 in 2020. The CLFI is notably high in the Pearl River Delta region, as well as in Meizhou and Maoming. The results show the dynamic changes of the driving factors of CLF at the county scale in 2000, 2010, and 2020. Slope and grain output consistently emerge as key driving factors of CLF. Furthermore, agricultural benefits played a significant role in 2000 and 2020, whereas the coefficient for social economic development was more pronounced in 2010. By identifying the heterogeneity of the driving factors, this study suggests that strategies to address CLF should comprehensively consider aspects such as the optimization of cultivated land resources, farmers' interests, industrial restructuring, and the multifunctional development of farmland. The study findings can assist government policy-making for rural sustainable development, addressing CLF and food insecurity, and alleviating the regional development imbalance and urban–rural income gap, with the ultimate aim of achieving common prosperity.

Influential Factors and Classification of Cultivated Land Fragmentation, and Implications for Future Land Consolidation: A Case Study of Jiangsu Province in Eastern China

Abstract:Cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) is one of the main obstacles hindering the development of agricultural modernization and mechanization. Systematically exploring the general distribution characteristics, influential factors and classification of CLF are of great significance for improving regional agricultural production capacity, promoting resource conservation and intensive use, and ensuring national food security, especially at the regional scale. In this study, we established a new conceptual index system using multivariable linear regression, geographical detectors, and magic cube model for CLF assessment as well as an analysis of the spatial differentiation characteristics, driving mechanism and management zoning trade-off of CLF in Jiangsu Province in eastern China based on multi-source data characterizing geographic, land-use and socio-economic information. The results showed that the connotation of CLF has spatial-scale characteristics due to the differences in functions positioning of cultivated land resources in macro-social security and micro-livelihood maintenance. At the national/regional scale, CLF mainly covers the natural (resource), spatial and utilization attributes of cultivated land. Based on this, the CLFI in Jiangsu presents a spatial pattern that gradually increases from north to south, with significant spatial differences. Besides, the CLFI within built-up areas is significantly higher than that outside built-up areas, and its fractal dimensions both within and outside the urban planning built-up areas show the spatial pattern of "spatial distribution > resource endowment > convenience of utilization". Furthermore, average plot size, the proportion of industry and service industry, gross domestic product, slope, grain output, and plot distance from town are the dominant factors driving the spatial differentiation of CLF, with the influence power (q) is 0.472, 0.204, 0.133, 0.129, 0.097 and 0.084, respectively. Location conditions and socioeconomic activities have significant effects on the spatial differentiation of CLF within the built-up areas while highlighting the role of rural settlements outside urban built-up areas on CLF. Finally, we propose a two-level zoning system for diminishing the CLF and optimizing the utilization of cultivated land resources in Jiangsu based on influencing factors and fragmentation characteristics. The findings of this study will assist the government in developing appropriate regional context and land consolidation policies and coping strategies to CLF and food insecurity issues, and achieve sustainable development goals.

Abstract:Fragmentation of landholdings is commonly regarded as a major obstacle to agricultural production growth in China. This study analyses the factors contributing to land fragmentation, and uses household- and village-level data from 11 villages in Jiangxi Province to test these factors empirically. Our analysis shows that land fragmentation in China is caused to a large extent by the egalitarian principles used in distributing and reallocating land use rights to households. Land within each village is classified into different classes, with each household receiving land from each class. Moreover, land is basically assigned on the basis of household size, with large households receiving substantially more (and slightly bigger) plots than small households. We further find that incomes from off-farm employment and land rental markets are associated with lower land fragmentation. Limited market access does not induce land fragmentation. Instead, we find that landholdings in suburban areas are more fragmented, probably because farmers cultivate a wider range of (high value-added) crops in these areas. We conclude that, although land fragmentation has slightly declined during the 1990s, it is likely to remain high in China if the current principles underlying land distribution within villages are maintained. Three policy options for reducing land fragmentation are suggested.

Abstract:A clear understanding of cropland expansion dynamics and their effects is vital for cropland protection and food security. However, the trajectories of cropland expansion have been less discussed. This study referred to the modes of landscape expansion and assessed the cropland expansion trajectory in three urban agglomerations in the Yangtze River Economic Belt and its impact on cropland fragmentation. Specifically, we identified three cropland expansion trajectories using the landscape expansion index, namely, infilling, edge-expansion, and outlying. Moreover, the surface relief amplitude model was employed to characterize the relief amplitude effect on cropland expansion trajectories. By coupling landscape metrics (e.g., patch density, landscape shape index, the largest patch index, and aggregation index) and Spearman correlation analysis, the relationship between cropland expansion trajectories and cropland fragmentation was assessed. Results show that (1) three urban agglomerations experience cropland expansion, in which the edge-expansion trajectory is primary, followed by infilling and outlying trajectories; (2) the cumulative frequency curve indicates that infilling and edge-expansion trajectories are likely to be distributed in low topographic relief amplitude regions, while the outlying trajectory is located in relatively higher topographic relief amplitude regions; and (3) infilling and edge-expansion trajectories contribute to a significantly positive relationship with the decrease of cropland fragmentation, while the outlying trajectory has a negative relationship with cropland fragmentation. This research highlights that cropland protection policies should considerably focus on the trajectory of cropland expansion, not only request the total area of cropland in a dynamic balance.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to demonstrate that the fragmentariness of land in China is an important problem facing Chinese modern agriculture. The methods employed include literature review and causal analysis. Firstly,the paper evaluated three viewpoints about the fragmentariness of land in China from a historical development perspective. The fragmentariness of land in China is an institutional arrangement which corresponds to the productivity development level. It put forward the point that the equal number of land according to the landowners is normality. Secondly,it is believed that fragmentariness of land in China is the result of many factors combating with each other,including politics,economy,technology,institution,population,productivity,geography and so on. The fundamental cause of fragmentariness of land in China is that the enhancement of productivity level is impacted by multiple factors. Thirdly,the paper argued the main factors of anti-fragmentariness of land in China are productivity development,mergence and nature conditions. It's conclude that,the fragmentariness will still be a developing process during a period in the future . In addition,the paper puts forward the way of turning the fragmentariness of land into the large-scale land administration.

Abstract:Cultivated land fragmentation (CLF) is a complex result of the interaction between resource endowments and human activities in rural areas. Scientifically revealing the evolution of CLF and its driving factors along with rural development is of great significance to sustainable land-use management and rural development. However, there remains a gap in the literature on how CLF and its driving mechanism change with rural development. This study identified these changes by developing a new analytical framework for CLF and rurality assessment in the case of Jiangsu Province. The results show that (1) the regional differences in rural development stages have, to a certain extent, contributed to the substantial spatial variabilities in CLF characteristics and its driving factors. (2) The average value of the CLF index in Jiangsu Province gradually rises with the weakening of rural characteristics, and its fractal dimensions in different stages of rural development are all characterized by "spatial agglomeration > resource scale > utilization convenience". (3) Gradient analysis reveals that the drivers of CLF and its fractal dimensions changes in China differ from rural to urban contexts, especially highlighting the critical roles of production and living conditions, socio-economic development, and natural environment with different impact intensities and trends. Consequently, we call for joint actions to alleviate CLF on adaptive strategies, especially those related to the expansion of plot size, the spatial integration of rural settlements, and the intensification of urban land-use. The findings of this study will provide essential insights for policymakers on CLF to formulate differentiated farmland management and rural development policies.
