Abstract:Ni,Co-MOFs have been synthetized by a simple hydrothermal method. Subsequently, Co,Ni/N-doped porous carbon have been prepared by pyrolysis method using the Ni,Co-MOFs as precursor. The results show that the samples present high degree of graphitization. The Co-1–Ni-0.5/NC possesses the largest BET surface area (94.73 m2/g) and pore volume (0.456 cm3/g). The Co-1–Ni-0.5/NC presents the smallest HER overpotential (179 mV) and the best electrocatalytic activity for HER. The Co-0.5–Ni-0.5/NC and Co-1–Ni-0.5/NC have the relatively low overpotential for OER, which are about 348 mV and 383 mV, respectively. The smallest Tafel slope value indicates that Co-1–Ni-0.5/NC presents the best electrocatalytic reactive kinetics. Excellent electrocatalytic performance may be attributed to the more active sites, the higher specific surface area and mesopores as well as the lower charge-transfer resistance. The excellent HER and OER of Co-1–Ni-0.5/NC make its potential to be used on overall water splitting.

Abstract:Pure MoS2 and Ni-MoS2-RGO were prepared by a one-step hydrothermal approach. The result indicated that intensity of XRD diffraction peaks for MoS2 increase slightly as with the increase of RGO content. Mesopores of the MoS2, Ni-MoS2/RGO-10 and Ni-MoS2/RGO-15 are mainly distributed in the pore diameter rage of 2-50 nm. The addition of RGO increase the layer numbers of MoS2 in Ni-MoS2/RGO. Two Raman characteristic peaks at about 378 and 400 cm(-1) according to A(1g) and E-2g(1) modes have been observed in the MoS2 and Ni-MoS2/RGO. The eletrocatalytic test results show that the Ni-MoS2/RGO-5 has the lowest overpotentials of 349 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for OER and the Ni-MoS2/RGO-10 has the lowest overpotentials of 398 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for HER. Moderate Ni doping and RGO composites can effectively improve the intrinsic conductivity, the hydrogen adsorption free energy for HER, as well as providing more active sites for HER and OER.

Abstract:Lower onset potential and uniform distribution of catalytic performance are crucial for catalytic electrodes. This study presents a method for characterizing the spatial distribution of the initial potential on the surface of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) catalytic electrode using total internal reflection imaging (TIRi). By applying linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) with incremental positive potential to the electrode, the surface of the electrode generates micro-to-nanometer-sized O2 bubbles during the initial phase of OER, resulting in an increase in light intensity and a decrease in the effective refractive index (RI). By establishing the relationship between light intensity and potential, the spatial distribution of the OER onset potential can be quantified, enabling direct visualization of the electrode's surface and its catalytic activity. Furthermore, we applied the TIRi method to assess the influence of different substrates and electrodeposition conditions on the catalytic activity, repeatability, and durability of NiFe catalytic electrodes. This research contributes to the evaluation of various electrode deposition methods for large-scale catalytic electrodes and the rational manufacturing of efficient OER electrodes in industrial energy devices, promoting the development of the hydrogen energy field.
Simultaneous Interfacial Chemistry and Inner Helmholtz Plane Regulation for Superior Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Ni-based materials are cost-efficient electrocatalysts for the oxygen and hydrogen evolution reactions (OER and HER). Specifically, high-valence nickel oxides have been recently identified as highly active for both reactions; however, the origin of their activity during operation, particularly towards the HER, is still undefined. Herein, electrodeposition was used to produce Ni-based electrocatalysts supported on carbon fiber paper, followed by UV/O3 treatment to oxidize and modify their surface chemistry. The resulting electrodes were composed of nanoclusters formed by a metallic nickel core and ultrathin sheets of a high-valence nickel oxide whose crystalline structure was similar to NiO2, with Ni2+/Ni3+ oxidation states. Upon investigating the effect of the electrochemical conditioning of these high-valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes, confirming the formation of surface β-Ni(OH)2. This surface layer improved the performance of the electrode by providing active sites for H2O adsorption and dissociation, as indicated by detailed density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The origin of the higher HER activity of β-Ni(OH)2 (001) surface compared to NiO2 (2D), and Ni (111) surfaces is attributed to its unique electronic structure. The high valence nickel oxide/nickel electrodes possessed robust long-term OER and HER stability over 24h. Finally, the potential for modifying the structural composition of these electrodes and their use as bifunctional electrocatalysts for the water-splitting reaction was demonstrated by using the resulting electrodes in an electrolyzer coupled with/without a photovoltaic cell.

Abstract:NiO is widely recognized as a prospective electrocatalyst for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) due to its abundant reserve and superior electrocatalytic performance. However, there exist a substantial gap between its HER catalytic activity and practical application. In this research, we present a straightforward in-situ partial reduction methodology via vacuum annealing to synthesize Ni@NiO Schottky heterojunctions upon carbon fiber paper (CFP). The successful formation of the heterojunctions was confirmed using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Herein, the CFP serves two roles: (a) acting as the substrate to support the nanosheet arrays structure and (b) reducing NiO to Ni at high temperatures. By adjusting the vacuum annealing temperature, the proportion of Ni to NiO within the Ni@NiO Schottky heterojunction can be regulated in a wide range, thus regulating the HER activity of the samples. When the vacuum annealing temperature is 600 °C, Ni@NiO heterojunction sample exhibits outstanding HER performance with an overpotential of 172 mV at 10 mA cm−2, which decrease the energy consumption by 66% relative to pure NiO sample. The in-situ construction of Ni@NiO Schottky heterojunctions by such partial reduction methodology via vacuum annealing significantly enhances the HER performance of NiO with good stability, making it a promising candidate for hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts. This research also provides a method to improve the activity of other HER catalysts.

Abstract:Herein, different loading of Ni2P nanoparticles anchored on 3D Co-N-doped ordered macro-/mesoporous carbon (Ni2P/CoN-OMMC) were synthesized. The optimized Ni2P/CoN-OMMC-40 wt% catalyst with 40 wt% Ni2P loading exhibits the best electrocatalytic HER activity under strong acidic conditions, showing an extremely low overpotential of 69 mV at 10 mA cm(-2) and a small Tafel slope of 38 mV dec(-1). The highly distributed active Ni2P nanoparticles and the unique macro-mesoporous CoN-OMMC support that is beneficial for promoting the active site exposure and mass/electron transport may contribute synergistically to the remarkable HER catalytic performance.

Abstract:In this paper, we combined experimental and theoretical routes to develop a novel nanostructured nickel-molybdenum-phosphorous planar electrode as an efficient catalyst toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The HER activities of various Ni-based electrodes (Ni4Mo and Ni12P5) were evaluated not only experimentally but also by density functional theory. Meanwhile, the electrocatalytic performance of Ni-Mo-P prepared at different temperatures (500 °C, 600 °C, 700 °C, and 800 °C) was also explored. The results indicated that the sample prepared at 700 °C exhibited the best catalytic activity. The as-fabricated Ni-Mo-P electrode possessed lower overpotential, higher current density and a smaller Tafel slope than pristine modified Ni@Ni-Mo in 1.0 M KOH and also showed long-term stability. An overpotential as low as 276 mV could be achieved at 100 mA cm-2 H2 evolving current density, which was superior to those of most previously reported samples. After phosphorization treatment, the as-formed Ni12P5 played a crucial role in the activity enhancement. Density functional theory calculations revealed that Ni12P5 has a smaller |ΔGH*| value than Ni4Mo, further confirming that Ni12P5 shows better catalytic performance than Ni4Mo.

Abstract:The development of highly active and low-cost catalysts is a challenge for the application and large-scale commercialization of proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). In this study, a series of Pt-Ni alloy catalysts is synthesized by potentiostatic electrodeposition, and the optimum deposition parameters are determined by an orthogonal array experiment. The effect of electrodeposition parameters on the morphology, composition, and electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is investigated. The Pt-Ni alloy catalyst prepared with the optimum deposition parameters of -0.35 V versus saturated calomel electrode (SCE), 50 degrees C for 20 min exhibits the higher ORR activity. Rapid potential cycling dealloying is also employed to modify the morphology of Pt-Ni catalysts, which results in the increase of the electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and the improvement of the ORR electrocatalytic activity. The electrochemical active surface area (ECSA) for the dealloying Pt-Ni catalyst (D-OP-sample) with the grain size of 6.2 nm is 87.0 m(2) g(-1). The current density and the mass activity for the electrode with D-OP-sample catalyst are 281.5 mA.cm(-2) at 0.4 V and 587.9 mA.mg(Pt)(1) at 0.6 V, respectively.

Abstract:Optimizing the electronic structure of an electrocatalyst has been supposed to a valid approach to facilitate the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. Herein, a core–shell architecture comprising a Pt nanoparticle (NP) encapsulated into single-atomic Co species anchored on nickel iron double layered hydroxide substrate (PtCo–NiFe LDH) was established. The PtCo–NiFe LDH catalyst displays the remarkable electrocatalytic HER performance (29 mV@10 mA cm −2 ), better than the NiFe LDH (183 mV@10 mA cm −2 ) and commercial Pt/C (30 mV@10 mA cm −2 ). In addition, it also possesses excellent stability for up to 25 h, and the morphology and structure have hardly undergone any significant changes. It is supposed that the efficient electronic relation between Pt NP and atomically-distributed Co site on NiFe LDH could give rise to plentiful active sites and enhanced conductivity, and thus raise excellent catalytic properties. This work would improve the design and construction of efficient electrocatalysts for a sustainable green energy system.

Abstract:Hydrogen is a renewable and environmentally friendly energy carrier and is considered a viable alternative to fossil fuels. Consequently, developing electrodes with excellent hydrogen evolution electrocatalysis is a top priority in research. However, the use of flat electrodes as cathode substrates by most researchers limits the electrocatalytic active area of the prepared electrode. To address this issue, it is essential to prepare a micro-nano structure on a cathode substrate before electrodeposition. This study introduced a novel Ni nanocone/Grid electrode, obtained through a combined laser-electrodeposition process to investigate its electrocatalytic activity and stability for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Various techniques, including linear sweep voltammetry (LSV), electrochemical impedance spectra (EIS), cyclic voltammetry (CV), and chronopotentiometry (CP) in 1 M KOH solution, were employed to assess the HER electrocatalytic performance of the Ni nanocone/Grid electrodes. The experimental results demonstrated that the electrodes could achieve current densities of -10, -20, and -100 mA/cm2 with corresponding overpotentials of -281, -308, and -390 mV, respectively. Additionally, the Tafel slope of these electrodes was found to be only -82.05 mV/dec. The enhanced catalytic performance of the electrode was attributed to the synergistic effect of the grid-like and nanocone structures, which significantly increased the electrocatalytically active area and improved surface hydrophilicity, thereby boosting electrocatalytic performance. The simplicity of the preparation method and the exceptional performance of the electrode provide a promising new avenue for future research on HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:A catalytic electrode with extraordinary performances for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) should achieve a low onset potential of the bulk electrode, as well as its uniform distribution. Herein, a total internal reflection imaging (TIRi) method to characterize the onset potential distribution of the catalytic electrode surface is presented. When the potential scans toward negative in a linear sweep voltammetry, the equivalent refractive index of the electrolyte on the electrode surface will decrease due to H2 microbubbles generation, leading to the increase in optical intensity. Analysis of the relationship between the optical intensity and potential in each region results in the onset potential distribution. The TIRi method reveals poor uniformity and repeatability in the catalytic electrodes which are fabricated by depositing Pt/C catalysts on a porous carbon support with polymer binders (e.g., Nafion). Further electrochemical stability test also shows poor durability, whose HER onset potential deteriorates from the edge to the middle of these catalytic electrodes. The present TIRi method realizes direct visualization of the activity distribution on the bulk electrode surface, which provides a powerful tool for better fabrication and evaluation of large-area HER electrodes in industrial energy devices.

Abstract:The large-scale preparation of non-precious-metal hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrodes with remarkable performance was important to the energy crisis. Here, Mo-NiMo/NF (Ni Foam) electrodes were fabricated by homemade high power impulse magnetron sputtering technique with subsequent annealing. The synthesized Mo-NiMo/NF electrodes presented an exceptional electrocatalytic performance with η10 = 71 mV and prominent stability in alkaline aqueous electrolyte for the HER. The experimental data were corroborated by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The significant catalytic performance for HER active arose from NiMo alloy and the coupling effect between Mo and NiMo alloy. The lowest value on Gibbs free energy of NiMo was − 0.027 eV, very close to the ideal value zero. The adsorption energy of hydrogen atom from heterojunction between Mo and NiMo was − 1.786 eV, which could facilitate Volmer step to further enhance HER activity. More importantly, this synthesis method reported here was scalable, which could provide a valuable strategy to engineer the electrocatalysts with the aim to improve their catalytic activities.

Abstract:Exploration of cost-effective high-performance non-noble-metal-based electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has attracted huge attention. In this work, a nitrogen doping method is adopted to construct self-supported, N-doped NiO nanosheet arrays (N-NiO) as an effective HER electrocatalyst. The N-NiO nanosheet arrays are firmly anchored on a nickel foam substrate, forming a free-standing integrated electrode with an open nanostructure. By virtue of its larger electrochemical active surface areas and better electron conductivity, the N-NiO electrode has admirable electrocatalytic HER performance with a low overpotential (154 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm −2 ) and a low Tafel slope of 90 mV dec −1 . In addition, the N-NiO nanosheet arrays exhibit relatively stable electrocatalytic activity after a 10 h continuous test in an alkaline solution. Our reported rational design principle and optimization strategy provide a powerful way to construct advanced transition-metal-based electrocatalysts for the HER. Graphic Abstract

Abstract:The construction of highly active non-precious-metal electrocatalysts is the key to achieving an efficient hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this paper, a N-doped carbon layer composite was successfully synthesized by a self-limiting domain carbon thermal reduction strategy, in which the carbon layer was embedded with Ni/VN heterogeneous nanoparticles and Ni metal nanoclusters as well as anchored with many highly active Ni single atoms (denoted as Ni/VN/Ni-NC). The optimized Ni/VN/Ni-NC provides an abundance of active sites and high conductivity to facilitate efficient charge and mass transfer. And the electronic structure of Ni/VN heterostructures is optimized by the complementary effects of 3d orbital electrons, which contribute to the HER kinetics. The Ni/VN/Ni-NC exhibits excellent HER performance (without iR compensation) at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 with overpotentials of 84 mV (1 M KOH solution) and 166 mV (1 M PBS solution).

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of a highly efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great importance for the efficient generation of sustainable energy. Herein, amorphous/crystalline heterophase Ni-Mo-O/Cu (denoted as a/c Ni-Mo-O/Cu) was synthesized by a one-pot electrodeposition method. Thanks to the introduction of metallic Cu and the formation of amorphous Ni-Mo-O, the prepared electrocatalyst exhibits favorable conductivity and abundant active sites, which are favorable to the HER progress. Moreover, the interfaces consisting of Cu and Ni-Mo-O show electron transfers between these components, which might modify the absorption/desorption energy of H atoms, thus accelerating HER activity. As expected, the prepared a/c Ni-Mo-O/Cu possesses excellent HER performance, which affords an ultralow overpotential of 34.8 mV at 10 mA cm-2, comparable to that of 20 wt % Pt/C (35.0 mV), and remarkable stability under alkaline conditions.
Integration of Heterointerface and Porosity Engineering to Achieve Efficient Hydrogen Evolution of 2D Porous NiMoN Nanob Elts Coupled with Ni Particles

Abstract:The design of the electrocatalysts with the plentiful heterojuctional interface and large-accessible surface is desired to boost the HER performance, but it remains a challenge. Herein, we showed the design of 2D Ni/Ni0.2Mo0.8N porous heterojunction nanobelts as effective catalyst for the HER. The intimate combination of Ni and Ni0.2Mo0.8N can make the formation of the heterojuctional interface with plentiful active sites. The 2D porous structure can provide large accessible surface with less resistance for the transmission of the electrolytes, thus promoting the mass/charge transfer. The ratio of Ni and Ni 0.2 Mo 0.8 N can be easily tuned by regulating the precursor composition, which is important to give catalysts with optimized interface and suitable pores. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the interaction between Ni and Ni0.2Mo0.8N at the heterointerface can largely improve the intermediate H* adsorption kinetics (Delta G H*= -0.07 eV). Due to the above advantages, the optimized catalysts exhibited excellent HER activity with a low overpotential of 48 mV in 1 M KOH at 10 mA cm(-2) (without iR correction), which is superior to the most reported non-noble metal-based catalysts, and the long-term durability with no obvious degradation after continual operation of 48 h Notably, an electrolyzer assembled by the optimized Ni/Ni0.2Mo0.8N cathode with NiFe-LDH anode only requires a low operating voltage of 1.47 V to deliver 10 mA cm(-2) in 1 M KOH, surpassing the corresponding Pt/NF parallel to RuO2 /NF electrolyzer (1.61 V) and most of reported electrolyzers. Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) has received a lot of attention due to its promising advantages in producing "green hydrogen" via electrocatalysis with low cost and high efficiency. Until now, developing transition metal-based electrocatalysts for HER is still a great challenge. In this regard, we reported a facile strategy to fabricate Co/Ni species encapsulated by carbon structure (CoNi@C) through annealing two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) nanosheets. The CoNi@C that was prepared under 600 °C achieved the highest catalytic performance in 1 M KOH electrolyte with an overpotential of 330 mV to acquire 100 mA cm-2. In addition, the effect of KOH concentrations on the HER performance of CoNi@C-600 was explored. In 3 M KOH electrolyte, the current density of 100 mA cm-2 has been attained at a bias potential of 80 mV. The alkaline environment can improve the electrocatalytic performance and further improve the stability of the as-prepared catalysts. This work would endow promising opportunities for the manipulation of MOF-based structures through pyrolysis to fabricate highly efficient electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Heterostructure engineering is an efficient strategy to synergisticallyimprove electrocatalytic activity. In this work, Ni/MoO2 heterojunction nanorods with porous structure self-supported on nickel foam (NF) are elaborately designed through a facile solution-evaporationmethod followed by a thermal reduction process. Prominently, the optimal electrocatalyst Ni/MoO2@NF-E delivers an exceptionally low overpotential of 19 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 52.3 mV dec-1 toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline solution. Concurrently, Ni/MoO2@NF-E also maintains excellent stability after 120 h of electrolysis or 5000 cyclic voltammetry cycles. The experimental and density functional theory (DFT) results indicate that the enhanced HER performance of Ni/MoO2@NF-E should be ascribed to the porous structure in the Ni/MoO2 nanorods providing more active catalytic site, the moderate Gibbs free energy of hydrogen adsorption (ΔGH*), as well as strong synergistic effect between Ni and MoO2. This work provides an efficient route for developing HER electrocatalysts in alkaline media.

Abstract:As energy resources become increasingly scarce and environmental issues grow more pressing, hydrogen is emerging as a promising alternative to traditional fuels. In this work, rod-shaped NiMoO 4 -Sx-c electrolytic water HER catalysts with surface particles attached were prepared by solvothermal vulcanization and calcination reduction based on the configuration of NiMoO 4 precursors with different NiMo atom ratios. NiMoO 4 Sx-c achieved current densities of 10 mA cm −2 and 100 mA cm −2 at overpotentials of 105 mV and 256 mV, respectively. At 100 mA cm −2 , the catalytic performance of the electrode did not change within 50 h, which proved that the treated catalyst had excellent stability. The excellent HER performance was attributed to the formation of cross-linked NiS 2 and MoS 2 heterostructures on its surface due to the vulcanization and calcination reduction processes, thereby increasing the H adsorption energy. Concurrently, during the vulcanization process, particles were deposited on the surface of the smooth rod-like structure, which improved the hydrophilic/hydrophobic properties of the catalyst, enhanced the diffusion of the electrolyte, and ensured the rapid release of bubbles. This research not only provides a new strategy for synthesizing efficient HER electrocatalysts but also promotes the development of efficient electrolytic water catalysts.
