Abstract:We study three combinatorial models for the lower-triangular matrix with entries $t_{n,k} = \binom{n}{k} n^{n-k}$: two involving rooted trees on the vertex set $[n+1]$, and one involving partial functional digraphs on the vertex set $[n]$. We show that this matrix is totally positive and that the sequence of its row-generating polynomials is coefficientwise Hankel-totally positive. We then generalize to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,z)$ that count improper and proper edges, and further to polynomials $t_{n,k}(y,\mathbf{\phi})$ in infinitely many indeterminates that give a weight $y$ to each improper edge and a weight $m! \, \phi_m$ for each vertex with $m$ proper children. We show that if the weight sequence $\mathbf{\phi}$ is Toeplitz-totally positive, then the two foregoing total-positivity results continue to hold. Our proofs use production matrices and exponential Riordan arrays.

Abstract:There is a well-known bijection between finite binary sequences and integer partitions. Sequences of length r correspond to partitions of perimeter r+1. Motivated by work on rational numbers in the Calkin-Wilf tree, we classify partitions whose corresponding binary sequence is a palindrome. We give a generating function that counts these partitions, and describe how to efficiently generate all of them. Atypically for partitions generating functions, we find an unusual significance to prime degrees. Specifically, we prove there are nontrivial palindrome partitions of n except when n=3 or n+1 is prime. We find an interesting new "branching diagram" for partitions, similar to Young's lattice, with an action of the Klein four group corresponding to natural operations on the binary sequences.

Chromatic symmetric functions and polynomial invariants of trees

Abstract:Stanley asked whether a tree is determined up to isomorphism by its chromatic symmetric function. We approach Stanley's problem by studying the relationship between the chromatic symmetric function and other invariants. First, we prove Crew's conjecture that the chromatic symmetric function of a tree determines its generalized degree sequence, which enumerates vertex subsets by cardinality and the numbers of internal and external edges. Second, we prove that the restriction of the generalized degree sequence to subtrees contains exactly the same information as the subtree polynomial, which enumerates subtrees by cardinality and number of leaves. Third, we construct arbitrarily large families of trees sharing the same subtree polynomial, proving and generalizing a conjecture of Eisenstat and Gordon.

Abstract:Furstenberg-Weiss have extended Szemerédi's theorem on arithmetic progressions to trees by showing that a large subset of the tree contains arbitrarily long arithmetic subtrees. We study higher dimensional versions that analogously extend the multidimensional Szemerédi theorem by demonstrating the existence of certain arithmetic structures in large subsets of a cartesian product of trees.

Revisiting Tree Canonization using polynomials

Abstract:Graph Isomorphism (GI) is a fundamental algorithmic problem. Amongst graph classes for which the computational complexity of GI has been resolved, trees are arguably the most fundamental. Tree Isomorphism is complete for deterministic logspace, a tiny subclass of polynomial time, by Lindell's result. Over three decades ago, he devised a deterministic logspace algorithm that computes a string which is a canon for the input tree -- two trees are isomorphic precisely when their canons are identical. Inspired by Miller-Reif's reduction of Tree Isomorphism to Polynomial Identity Testing, we present a new logspace algorithm for tree canonization fundamentally different from Lindell's algorithm. Our algorithm computes a univariate polynomial as canon for an input tree, based on the classical Eisenstein's criterion for the irreducibility of univariate polynomials. This can be implemented in logspace by invoking the well known Buss et al. algorithm for arithmetic formula evaluation. This algorithm is conceptually very simple, avoiding the delicate case analysis and complex recursion that constitute the core of Lindell's algorithm. We illustrate the adaptability of our algorithm by extending it to a couple of other classes of graphs.

Abstract:Let $p\ge 5$ be a prime and let $P$ be a Sylow $p$-subgroup of a finite symmetric group. To every irreducible character of $P$ we associate a collection of labelled, complete $p$-ary trees. The main results of this article describe Sylow branching coefficients for symmetric groups for all irreducible characters of $P$ in terms of some combinatorial properties of these trees, extending previous work on the linear characters of $P$.

Abstract:A periodic parallelogram polyomino is a parallelogram polyomino such that we glue the first and the last column. In this work we extend a bijection between ordered trees and parallelogram polyominoes in order to compute the generating function of periodic parallelogram polyominoes with respect to the height, the width and the intrinsic thickness, a new statistic unrelated to the existing statistics on parallelogram polyominoes. Moreover we define a rotation over periodic parallelogram polyominoes, which induces a partitioning in equivalent classes called strips. We also compute the generating function of strips using the theory of Pólya.

Abstract:The independence polynomial of a graph $G$ is \[I(G,x)=\sum\limits_{k\ge 0}i_k(G)x^k,\] where $i_k(G)$ denotes the number of independent sets of $G$ of size $k$ (note that $i_0(G)=1$). In this paper we show a new method to prove real-rootedness of the independence polynomials of certain families of trees. In particular we will give a new proof of the real-rootedness of the independence polynomials of centipedes (Zhu's theorem), caterpillars (Wang and Zhu's theorem), and we will prove a conjecture of Galvin and Hilyard about the real-rootedness of the independence polynomial of the so-called Fibonacci trees.

Abstract:We give two trees allowing to represent all positive rational numbers. These trees can be seen as ternary and quinary analogues of the Calkin-Wilf tree. For each of these two trees, we give recurrence formulas allowing to compute the rational number corresponding to the node n. These are analogues of the formulas given by Donald Knuth and Moshe Newman for the Calkin-Wilf tree. Finally, we show that the two sequences we have obtained, together with Calkin-Wilf sequence, are the only ones which satisfy a relation analogue to Newman's relation and enumerate the positive rationals.

Computing palindromes on a trie in linear time

Abstract:A trie $\mathcal{T}$ is a rooted tree such that each edge is labeled by a single character from the alphabet, and the labels of out-going edges from the same node are mutually distinct. Given a trie $\mathcal{T}$ with $n$ edges, we show how to compute all distinct palindromes and all maximal palindromes on $\mathcal{T}$ in $O(n)$ time, in the case of integer alphabets of size polynomial in $n$. This improves the state-of-the-art $O(n \log h)$-time algorithms by Funakoshi et al. [PCS 2019], where $h$ is the height of $\mathcal{T}$. Using our new algorithms, the eertree with suffix links for a given trie $\mathcal{T}$ can readily be obtained in $O(n)$ time. Further, our trie-based $O(n)$-space data structure allows us to report all distinct palindromes and maximal palindromes in a query string represented in the trie $\mathcal{T}$, in output optimal time. This is an improvement over an existing (naïve) solution that precomputes and stores all distinct palindromes and maximal palindromes for each and every string in the trie $\mathcal{T}$ separately, using a total $O(n^2)$ preprocessing time and space, and reports them in output optimal time upon query.

Abstract:The generalized degree polynomial $\mathbf{G}_T(x,y,z)$ of a tree $T$ is an invariant introduced by Crew that enumerates subsets of vertices by size and number of internal and boundary edges. Aliste-Prieto et al. proved that $\mathbf{G}_T$ is determined linearly by the chromatic symmetric function $\mathbf{X}_T$, introduced by Stanley. We present several classes of information about $T$ that can be recovered from $\mathbf{G}_T$ and hence also from $\mathbf{X}_T$. Examples of such information include the double-degree sequence of $T$, which enumerates edges of $T$ by the pair of degrees of their endpoints, and the leaf adjacency sequence of $T$, which enumerates vertices of $T$ by degree and number of adjacent leaves. We also discuss a further generalization of $\mathbf{G}_T$ that enumerates tuples of vertex sets and show that this is also determined by $\mathbf{X}_T$.

Self-similar Markov trees and scaling limits

Abstract:Self-similar Markov trees constitute a remarkable family of random compact real trees carrying a decoration function that is positive on the skeleton. As the terminology suggests, they are self-similar objects that further satisfy a Markov branching property. They are built from the combination of the recursive construction of real trees by gluing line segments with the seminal observation of Lamperti, which relates positive self-similar Markov processes and Lévy processes via a time change. They carry natural length and harmonic measures, which can be used to perform explicit spinal decompositions. Self-similar Markov trees encompass a large variety of random real trees that have been studied over the last decades, such as the Brownian CRT, stable Lévy trees, fragmentation trees, and growth-fragmentation trees. We establish general invariance principles for multi-type Galton--Watson trees with integer types and illustrate them with many combinatorial classes of random trees that have been studied in the literature, including (possibly dissipative) discrete fragmentation trees, peeling trees of Boltzmann (possibly $O(n)$-decorated) planar maps, or even the more recent fully parked trees.

Abstract:Let $m(G,\lambda)$ be the multiplicity of an eigenvalue $\lambda$ of a connected graph $G$. Wang et al. [Linear Algebra Appl. 584(2020), 257-266] proved that for any connected graph $G\neq C_n$, $m(G, \lambda) \leq 2c(G) + p(G) -1$, where $c (G) = |E(G)| - |V (G)| + 1$ and $p(G)$ are the cyclomatic number and the number of pendant vertices of $G$, respectively. In the same paper, they proposed the problem to characterize all connected graphs $G$ with eigenvalue $\lambda$ such that $m(G, \lambda) =2c (G)+ p(G)-1$. Wong et al. [Discrete Math. 347(2024), 113845] solved this problem for the case when $G$ is a tree by characterizing all trees $T$ with eigenvalue $\lambda$ such that $m(T , \lambda) = p(T )-1$. In this paper, we further provide the structural characterization on trees $T$ with eigenvalue $\lambda$ such that $m(T , \lambda) = p(T )-2$.

Abstract:Pólya trees are rooted, unlabeled trees on $n$ vertices. This paper gives an efficient, new way to generate Pólya trees. This allows comparing typical unlabeled and labeled tree statistics and comparing asymptotic theorems with `reality'. Along the way, we give a product formula for the number of rooted labeled trees preserved by a given automorphism; this refines Cayley's formula.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce the notion of the quadratic graph, that is a graph whose eigenvalues are integral or quadratic algebraic integral, and determine nine infinite families of quadratic starlike trees, which are just all the quadratic starlike trees including integral starlike trees. Thus the quadratic starlike trees are completely characterized, and moreover, the display expressions for the characteristic polynomials of the quadratic starlike trees are also given.

Abstract:The problem of counting plane trees with $n$ edges and an even or an odd number of leaves was studied by Eu, Liu and Yeh, in connection with an identity on coloring nets due to Stanley. This identity was also obtained by Bonin, Shapiro and Simion in their study of Schröder paths, and it was recently derived by Coker using the Lagrange inversion formula. An equivalent problem for partitions was independently studied by Klazar. We present three parity reversing involutions, one for unlabelled plane trees, the other for labelled plane trees and one for 2-Motzkin paths which are in one-to-one correspondence with Dyck paths.

Abstract:An independent set in a graph is a collection of vertices that are not adjacent to each other. The cardinality of the largest independent set in $G$ is represented by $\alpha(G)$. The independence polynomial of a graph $G = (V, E)$ was introduced by Gutman and Harary in 1983 and is defined as \[ I(G;x) = \sum_{k=0}^{\alpha(G)}{s_k}x^{k}={s_0}+{s_1}x+{s_2}x^{2}+...+{s_{\alpha(G)}}x^{\alpha(G)}, \] where $s_k$ represents the number of independent sets in $G$ of size $k$. The conjecture made by Alavi, Malde, Schwenk, and Erdös in 1987 stated that the independence polynomials of trees are unimodal, and many researchers believed that this conjecture could be strengthened up to its corresponding log-concave version. However, in our paper, we present evidence that contradicts this assumption by introducing infinite families of trees whose independence polynomials are not log-concave.

Abstract:Stanley and Féray gave a formula for the irreducible character of the symmetric group related to a multi-rectangular Young diagram. This formula shows that the character is a polynomial in the multi-rectangularcoordinates and gives an explicit combinatorial interpretation for its coefficients in terms of counting certain decorated maps (i.e., graphs drawn on surfaces). In the current paper we concentrate on the coefficients of thetop-degree monomials in the Stanley character polynomial, which corresponds to counting certain decorated plane trees. We give an explicit bijection between such trees and minimal factorizations of a cycle.
