Abstract:Dual-metal site is more than simple double of the single atom, which has particular functionalities that help to promote electrocatalytic performance utilizing the synergistic effect. In the past few years, tremendous progress has been achieved in this field, although the research of dual-metal site is still in the developing stage. In this review, the preparation strategies and characterization techniques of dual-metal sites are summarized, which always develop hand-in-hand. Currently the main task is on the synthesis to achieve precise site-control. The reason is that the synergistic effect demands adjacent metal coupling, either in Homonuclear or heteronuclear form, yet different metal couples may exist with different local coordination configurations, i.e., MIN3-MIIN3 or MIN4-MIIN4, posing challenges in characterization. Theoretical modeling and simulation, which are indispensable tools to elucidate the nature of atomic level catalyst, are addressed here. These techniques are essential for screening potential candidates and rationalization of reaction mechanism. Here, we focus on the critical roles of charge difference, spin polarization and the promise to break scaling relationship via providing two reaction centers, which are unique traits for dual-atom sites. Finally, perspective on future challenges and opportunities are discussed.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal catalysts with well-defined structures have been the research hotspot in heterogeneous catalysis because of their high atomic utilization efficiency, outstanding activity, and selectivity. Dual-atomic-site catalysts (DASCs), as an extension of single-atom catalysts (SACs), have recently drawn surging attention. The DASCs possess higher metal loading, more sophisticated and flexible active sites, offering more chance for achieving better catalytic performance, compared with SACs. In this review, recent advances on how to design new DASCs for enhancing energy catalysis will be highlighted. It will start with the classification of marriage of two kinds of single-atom active sites, homonuclear DASCs and heteronuclear DASCs according to the configuration of active sites. Then, the state-of-the-art characterization techniques for DASCs will be discussed. Different synthetic methods and catalytic applications of the DASCs in various reactions, including oxygen reduction reaction, carbon dioxide reduction reaction, carbon monoxide oxidation reaction, and others will be followed. Finally, the major challenges and perspectives of DASCs will be provided.

Abstract:Single-atom site catalysts（SACs） and two-dimensional materials（2DM） have gradually become two hot topics in catalysis over the past decades. Their combination with each other can further endow the derived SACs with extraordinary properties such as high loading, identical active sites, uniform coordination environment, distinctive metal-support interaction, and enhanced catalytic activities. In this review, we highlight the recent development in this specific research topic according to the types of substrates and focus on their applications in energy conversion field. Additionally, we also make a brief introduction to the synthesis and characterization methods for SACs supported on 2DM（SACs/2DM）. Finally, the challenges and perspectives are summarized based on the current development status. It is believed that this work will make contributions to the rational design and fabrication of novel SACs/2DM, promoting their practical energy applications in the future.

Abstract:AbstractElectrocatalytic CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising and green approach for reducing atmospheric CO2 concentration and achieving high‐valued conversion of CO2 under the carbon‐neutral policy. In CO2RR, the dual‐site metal catalysts (DSMCs) have received wide attention for their ingenious design strategies, abundant active sites, and excellent catalytic performance attributed to the synergistic effect between dual‐site in terms of activity, selectivity and stability, which plays a key role in catalytic reactions. This review provides a systematic summary and detailed classification of DSMCs for CO2RR, describes the mechanism of synergistic effects in catalytic reactions, and also introduces in situ characterization techniques commonly used in CO2RR. Finally, the main challenges and prospects of dual‐site metal catalysts and even multi‐site catalysts for CO2 recycling are analyzed. It is believed that based on the understanding of bimetallic site catalysts and synergistic effects in CO2RR, well‐designed high‐performance, low‐cost electrocatalysts are promising for achieving CO2 conversion, electrochemical energy conversion and storage in the future.

Abstract:The pursuit of high metal utilization in heterogeneous catalysis has triggered the burgeoning interest of various atomically dispersed catalysts. Our aim in this review is to assess key recent findings in the synthesis, characterization, structure‐property relationship and computational studies of dual‐atom catalysts (DACs), which cover the full spectrum of applications in thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis and photocatalysis. In particular, combination of qualitative and quantitative characterization with cooperation with DFT insights, synergies and superiorities of DACs compare to counterparts, high‐throughput catalyst exploration and screening with machine‐learning algorithms are highlighted. Undoubtably, it would be wise to expect more fascinating developments in the field of DACs as tunable catalysts. Inspired by paired metal sites in enzymes, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) were developed as a frontier in heterogeneous catalysis. DACs possess many unique advantages and surpass their counterparts in various catalytic processes. Herein, we summarize the up‐to‐date advancements in synthesis, characterization, structure‐activity relationship of DACs and outlook the future development in this field with combination from computational insights.

Abstract:Currently, the goals of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality are driving the development of cutting-edge technologies to recover CO 2 and further close the carbon cycle. Among them, dry reforming of methane (DRM) is considered one of the most promising processes as it can reduce the release of CO 2 and CH 4 while producing syngas from H 2 and CO, which can be further processed into valuable chemicals through Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Numerous studies have been conducted on catalyst design for DRM processes. Conventional single-metal site catalysts (SMSCs) still need to promote catalytic activity, which is hindered by carbon deposition and sintering of the active metal. Fortunately, dual-metal-site catalysts (DMSCs), including nano-sized and even atomic-sized catalysts, are attracting the interest of researchers due to their resistance to carbon deposition, prevention of active metal aggregation, strong metal-support interaction (SMSI), etc. Proposed methods for improving catalytic efficiency and durability are outlined. DMSCs, with their precisely structured and tailored design, offer valuable opportunities for fundamental studies aimed at understanding the governing mechanisms and active sites in CO 2 -CH 4 reforming reactions. In this review, we provide an overview of recent research developments in catalysts for CO 2 -CH 4 reforming reactions, including nano- and atom-size catalysts. The key content includes catalyst design strategies ( e.g. , promoter doping, support modification, defect regulation), and synthesis methods ( e.g. , calcination temperatures, and reduction treatment), performance modulation ( e.g. , CO 2 /CH 4 conversion efficiency and CO/H 2 molar ratio), and reaction mechanism exploration. By covering a large number of studies on DMSCs, we aim to provide a more comprehensive and general understanding of the state of the art in DMSCs and also highlight potential development directions for future studies on heterogeneous catalysis of DRM in DMSC systems, in the hope of advancing not only fundamental experiments but also practical applications of DRM to one day alleviate the energy and environmental crisis caused by the misuse of fossil fuels and the resulting greenhouse effects.

Abstract:Single-atom-site catalysts (SASCs) featuring maximized atom utilization and isolated active sites have progressed tremendously in recent years as a highly prosperous branch of catalysis research. Varieties of SASCs have been developed that show excellent performance in many catalytic applications. The major goal of SASC research is to establish feasible synthetic strategies for the preparation of high-performance catalysts, to achieve an in-depth understanding of the active-site structures and catalytic mechanisms, and to develop practical catalysts with industrial value. This Perspective describes the up-to-date development of SASCs and related catalysts, such as dual-atom-site catalysts (DASCs) and nano-single-atom-site catalysts (NSASCs), analyzes the current challenges encountered by these catalysts for industrial applications, and proposes their possible future development path.

Abstract:Atomically dispersed metal atoms on supports exhibit distinctive advantages in maximizing atomic utilization, which plays an indispensable role in the fabrication of cost‐effective catalysts. In particular, dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) containing dual active sites not only retain the merits of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), but also introduce diverse interactions between the two adjacent metal atoms, endowing them with superior catalytic performance and a broad range of applications. With the development of DACs, it is important to identify active sites and establish intrinsic catalytic mechanisms relationship. The general characterization methods for DACs are comprehensively summarized here, especially the structural nature of dual active sites is discussed in detail. Subsequently, the representative scientific research efforts in various applications including thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis are described, with emphasis on structure‐property relationships. Finally, a summary and some prospects for the future of advanced DACs are presented.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is a promising strategy to achieve electrical‐to‐chemical energy storage while closing the global carbon cycle. The carbon‐supported single‐atom catalysts (SACs) have great potential for electrochemical CO2RR due to their high efficiency and low cost. The metal centers' performance is related to the local coordination environment and the long‐range electronic intercalation from the carbon substrates. This review summarizes the recent progress on the synthesis of carbon‐supported SACs and their application toward electrocatalytic CO2 reduction to CO and other C1 and C2 products. Several SACs are involved, including MNx catalysts, heterogeneous molecular catalysts, and the covalent organic framework (COF) based SACs. The controllable synthesis methods for anchoring single‐atom sites on different carbon supports are introduced, focusing on the influence that precursors and synthetic conditions have on the final structure of SACs. For the CO2RR performance, the intrinsic activity difference of various metal centers and the corresponding activity enhancement strategies via the modulation of the metal centers' electronic structure are systematically summarized, which may help promote the rational design of active and selective SACs for CO2 reduction to CO and beyond.

Abstract:Developing sustainable and clean electrochemical energy conversion technologies is a crucial step in addressing the challenges of energy shortage and environmental pollution. Exploring and devel-oping new electrocatalysts with excellent performance and low cost will facilitate the commercial use of these energy conversion technologies. Recently, dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have attracted considerable research interest since they exhibit higher metal atom loading and more flexible active sites compared to single-atom catalysts (SACs). In this paper, the latest preparation methods and characterization techniques of DACs are systematically reviewed. The advantages of homonuclear and heteronuclear DACs and the catalytic mechanism and identification technologies between the two DACs are highlighted. The current applications of DACs in the field of electrocatalysis are sum-marized. The development opportunities and challenges of DACs in the future are prospected. The ultimate goal is to provide new ideas for the preparation of new catalysts with excellent properties by customizing diatomic catalysts for electrochemical applications.

Abstract:Single-metal-atom catalysts (SMACs) with the merits of maximum atom utilization, peculiar electronic structure, and adjustable coordination environment, have emerged as the rising stars. They are not only regarded as the promising electrocatalysts, but also show unconventionally excellent alkali storage, thus enabling them for energy devices. In this work, we review the up-to-date progress of single metal atom catalysts including the detailed synthetic strategies and all sorts of applications in energy storage and conversion. In addition, we also discuss intrinsic catalytic effects, degradation mechanism, modulation approaches, support structure design, current challenges, and potential development trends. This work may shed light on developing high-performance SMACs using a variety of strategies for catalytic and energy applications.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of distinctive porous crystalline materials constructed by metal ions/clusters and organic linkers. Owing to their structural diversity, functional adjustability, and high surface area, different types of MOF-based single metal sites are well exploited, including coordinately unsaturated metal sites from metal nodes and metallolinkers, as well as active metal species immobilized to MOFs. Furthermore, controllable thermal transformation of MOFs can upgrade them to nanomaterials functionalized with active single-atom catalysts (SACs). These unique features of MOFs and their derivatives enable them to serve as a highly versatile platform for catalysis, which has actually been becoming a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research area. In this review, we overview the recent developments of catalysis at single metal sites in MOF-based materials with emphasis on their structures and applications for thermocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photocatalysis. We also compare the results and summarize the major insights gained from the works in this review, providing the challenges and prospects in this emerging field.

Abstract:Carbon materials hold significant promise in electrocatalysis, particularly in electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (eCO2 RR) and two-electron oxygen reduction reaction (2e- ORR). The pivotal factor in achieving exceptional overall catalytic performance in carbon catalysts is the strategic design of specific active sites and nanostructures. This work presents a comprehensive overview of recent developments in carbon electrocatalysts for eCO2 RR and 2e- ORR. The creation of active sites through single/dual heteroatom doping, functional group decoration, topological defect, and micro-nano structuring, along with their synergistic effects, is thoroughly examined. Elaboration on the catalytic mechanisms and structure-activity relationships of these active sites is provided. Abstract:This work first presents the frequently‐used experimental synthesis and characterization methods of dual‐atom catalysts. Then, four synergistic catalytic mechanisms, including cascade, assistance, co‐adsorption and bifunction mechanisms, are summarized. The emphasis is placed on four asymmetric microenvironment modulating strategies, including active site asymmetric strategy, transverse/axial‐modification engineering, distance engineering and strain engineering, and their effects on oxygen/carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Dual‐atom catalysts (DACs) with atomically dispersed dual‐sites, as an extension of single‐atom catalysts (SACs), have recently become a new hot topic in heterogeneous catalysis due to their maximized atom efficiency and dual‐site diverse synergy, because the synergistic diversity of dual‐sites achieved by asymmetric microenvironment tailoring can efficiently boost the catalytic activity by optimizing the electronic structure of DACs. Then, four synergistic catalytic mechanisms (cascade mechanism, assistance mechanism, co‐adsorption mechanism and bifunction mechanism) and four key modulating methods (active site asymmetric strategy, transverse/axial‐modification engineering, distance engineering and strain engineering) are elaborated comprehensively. The emphasis is placed on the effects of asymmetric microenvironment of DACs on oxygen/carbon dioxide reduction reaction. Finally, some perspectives and outlooks are also addressed. In short, the review summarizes a useful asymmetric microenvironment tailoring strategy to speed up synthesis of high‐performance electrocatalysts for different reactions.
