Abstract:Nonoxidative dehydrogenation is promising for production of light olefins from shale gas, but current technology relies on precious Pt or toxic Cr catalysts and suffers from thermodynamically oriented coke formation. To solve these issues, the earth-abundant iron catalyst is employed, where Fe species are effectively modulated by siliceous zeolite, which is realized by the synthesis of Fe-containing MFI siliceous zeolite in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic sodium (FeS-1-EDTA). Catalytic tests in ethane dehydrogenation show that this catalyst has a superior coke resistance in a 200 h run without any deactivation with extremely high activity and selectivity (e.g., 26.3% conversion and over 97.5% selectivity to ethene in at 873 K, close to the thermodynamic equilibrium limitation). Abstract:Catalytic dehydrogenation of ethane (EDH) is promising for the utilization of shale gas to produce ethylene, but the current processes mostly exhibit space-time productivity of ethylene lower than 1.5 KgC2H4 Kgcat(-1) h(-1) because of the insufficient catalyst activity in the non-oxidative route. We reported a catalyst with isolated cobalt in siliceous zeolite derived from a mechanically assisted sponta-neous dispersion. This material can operate as a non-oxidative EDH catalyst at thermodynamically limited conversion levels under rapid gas feeding, resulting in ethylene productivity at 13.4 KgC2H4 Kgcat(-1) h(-1). This result is superior to that of the previous non-noble metal catalysts and even outperforms the precious PtSn/Al2O3 catalyst. The isolated cobalt sites are preserved upon calcination at high temperatures and during EDH operation under harsh conditions, resulting in superior durability in a long reaction period with negligible coke formation.

Abstract:The shale gas revolution and the carbon-neutrality goal are motivating the landscape toward the synthesis of value-added chemicals or fuels from underutilized ethane with the assistance of greenhouse gas CO 2 . Combining ethane aromatization with CO 2 reduction offers an opportunity to directly produce liquid products for facile separation, storage, and transportation. In the present work, Fe/ZSM-5 catalysts showed promise in the simultaneous CO 2 reduction and ethane aromatization at atmospheric pressure and 873 K. The catalysts were further investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements under in-situ conditions, indicating that most of Fe species existed in the form of Fe oxides and a portion of Fe was incorporated into the ZSM-5 framework generating Lewis acid sites. Both types of Fe species remained almost unchanged under reaction conditions, contributing to an enhanced aromatization activity of Fe/ZSM-5. The effects of CO 2 and steam on the acid sites and in turn aromatization activity were also investigated by transient studies, which exhibited a reversible modification behavior. Moreover, CO 2 was identified to be critical to enhance coke resistance and in turn catalyst stability. This work highlights the feasibility of using CO 2 to assist the upgrading of abundant ethane from shale gas to aromatics over non-precious Fe-based zeolite catalysts.

Abstract:Cobalt catalysts supported on submicron ZSM-5 with different Si/Al ratio have been prepared and characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption, SEM, MAS NMR, XPS, UV–vis, Py-IR and H2-TPR. They are effective for direct dehydrogenation of ethane to ethylene. HZSM-5 supported catalyst is far more active than NaZSM-5 and SBA-15 supported ones with same Co content. The optimal catalyst exhibited an ethane conversion of 54.5% with 87.8% selectivity to ethylene. The dispersed cobaltous species play a vital role in dehydrogenation, which were formed by in situ reduction of Co3O4 and CoOx species during the initial reaction period. Higher amount of cobaltous species can be obtained on the support having stronger interaction with the loaded Co species, resulting in an enhancement in catalytic activity. The strong interaction can also stabilize the cobaltous species, preventing the over-reduction of cobaltous species to metallic Co during the reaction which leads to deactivation.
Isolated Pt Atoms Stabilized by Ga2O3 Clusters Confined in ZSM-5 for Nonoxidative Activation of Ethane

Abstract:Selective activation of light alkanes is an essential reaction in the petrochemical industry for producing commodity chemicals, such as light olefins and aromatics. Because of the much higher intrinsic activities of noble metals in comparison to non-noble metals, it is desirable to employ solid catalysts with low noble metal loadings to reduce the cost of catalysts. Herein, we report the introduction of a tiny amount of Pt (at levels of hundreds of ppm) as a promoter of the Ga2O3 clusters encapsulated in ZSM-5 zeolite, which leads to ∼20-fold improvement in the activity for ethane dehydrogenation reaction. A combination of experimental and theoretical studies shows that the isolated Pt atoms stabilized by small Ga2O3 clusters are the active sites for activating the inert C-H bonds in ethane. The synergy of atomically dispersed Pt and Ga2O3 clusters confined in the 10MR channels of ZSM-5 can serve as a bifunctional catalyst for the direct ethane-benzene coupling reaction for the production of ethylbenzene, surpassing the performances of the counterpart catalysts made with PtGa nanoclusters and nanoparticles.

Abstract:Ethane conversion to ethylene and aromatics over Zn/zeolite catalysts is a promising technology for efficient exploitation of light alkanes. However, the reaction faces two major hurdles including the limited ethane conversion due to thermodynamics and the drastic catalyst deactivation by kinetical coke accumulation. Here we present a route to improve ethane conversion using a composite catalyst, involving Zn/HZSM-5 for ethane dehydroaromatization and CaMnO3-δ perovskite for in situ selective hydrogen oxidation. The in situ H2 consumption shifts ethane dehydrogenation equilibrium to the desired side and can obviously increase the yield of target product. Furthermore, it is found that the in situ generated H2O through H2 combustion can significantly suppress the coke formation and consequently enhance the stability of the composite catalyst. After 400 min reaction, a product yield of 23% was retained over the composite catalyst, almost a threefold increase with respect to the Zn/HZSM-5 reference (8%). It is anticipated that this novel composite catalyst combined with an efficient reactor technology may improve the viability of ethane aromatization in utilization.

Oxidative Dehydrogenation of Ethane with Oxygen Catalyzed by K–Y Zeolite Supported First-Row Transition Metals

Abstract:Fe, Co, Ni, and Cu oxide loaded K-Y zeolites were synthesized using a two-step method, in which transition metals in the zeolite framework reacted with the anions in solution to form an insoluble salt which, when calcined, is expected to form an oxide that is anchored to the inner and/or outer zeolite surface(s). The catalytic properties of these zeolites, for the oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane (ODHE) to ethylene were then investigated. An ethylene selectivity of close to 80%, at an ethane conversion of >20% was achieved on a nickel oxide loaded K-Y catalyst. This is a higher ethylene selectivity, at higher ethane conversion, than was achieved using a previously reported Ni/KY catalyst. The effects of both reaction temperature and the O-2/C-2 H-6 ratio on the catalytic performance were examined. The apparent energy of activation for the ODHE reaction on the nickel oxide loaded K-Y catalyst was 51.5 +/- 0.7 kj/mol. The C2H4 selectivity at zero conversion (S-0) on nickel oxide loaded K-Y was estimated for various O-2/C-2 H-6 ratios at a number of temperatures. The implications for the reaction mechanism of the S-0 values, with regard to the relative values of critical rate constants are discussed. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
An active and stable catalyst of Zn modified Pt nanoparticles encapsulated within silicalite-1 zeolite for dehydrogenation of ethane

Abstract:The rapid deactivation of catalysts for ethane dehydrogenation (EDH) at considerably high temperature and the relatively inert feature of ethane make it urgent to develop highly active and stable catalysts. Herein, a Zn modified Pt nanoparticles confined within silicalite-1 (S-1) zeolite catalyst for EDH reaction was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis using the PtZn/SiO 2 precursor without any protective ligands, which achieved extremely high catalytic performance ( e.g. , 15.9 % conversion which was close to the thermodynamic equilibrium limitation, 99.5 % ethylene selectivity, and 0.001 h −1 the deactivation rate). Multiple characterizations with XPS, in situ CO-DRIFTS, in situ C 2 H 6 -DRIFTS, TG-DTA, and Raman techniques on these catalysts revealed that the electron-rich Pt sites with stable electronic environment formed by Zn promoter introduced, resulting in enhanced anti-reduction and coke-resistance abilities. Furthermore, characterizations with XRD, HRTEM, Py-IR, hydroxyl vibration region of DRIFT spectra and 1 H MAS NMR spectroscopic analysis showed that the dilution effect of Zn and the trapping of zinc and platinum species by Si-OH groups in the form of (≡Si-O-Zn) x Pt complex could inhibit migration and aggregation, resulting in smaller metal particles and increasing anti-sintering ability. The superior catalytic performance as well as the environmental benign preparation route with no-ligand will further contribute to the advantages for future applications.

Revealing Active Sites and Reaction Pathways in Methane Non-Oxidative Coupling over Iron-Containing Zeolites

Abstract:Non-oxidative coupling of methane is a promising route to obtain ethylene directly from natural gas. We synthesized siliceous [Fe]zeolites with MFI and CHA topologies and found that they display high selectivity (>90 % for MFI and >99 % for CHA) to ethylene and ethane among gas-phase products. Deactivated [Fe]zeolites can be regenerated by burning coke in air. In situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the isolated Fe3+ centers in zeolite framework of fresh catalysts are reduced during the reaction to the active sites, including Fe2+ species and Fe (oxy)carbides dispersed in zeolite pores. Photoelectron photoion coincidence spectroscopy results show that methyl radicals are the reaction intermediates formed upon methane activation. Ethane is formed by methyl radical coupling, followed by its dehydrogenation to ethylene. Based on the observation of intermediates including allene, vinylacetylene, 1,3-butadiene, 2-butyne, and cyclopentadiene over [Fe]MFI, a reaction network is proposed leading to polyaromatic species. Such reaction intermediates are not observed over the small-pore [Fe]CHA, where ethylene and ethane are the only gas-phase products.

Abstract:A robust catalystthat can continuously and effectively producemethanol from methane is exceedingly desired. Cu-containing zeolitecatalysts were widely used in direct oxidative methane to methanolreactions, and the local structure of the Cu species was one of thekey factors to influence the reaction performance. It has been consideredthat dicopper was a highly active species, and its implementationwas thoroughly dependent on the Al pairs in the zeolite framework.Therefore, to obtain a highly effective Cu-exchanged AEI zeolite catalyst,the synthesis of the AEI zeolite with a high proportion of Al pairswas an important premise. Herein, AEI zeolite was successfully synthesizedfrom ferrierite (FER) zeolite via the interzeolite conversion (IZC)method. The use of FER zeolite realized a high proportion of Al pairs,leading to the fabrication of abundant dicopper-containing AEI. Inaddition, the high thermal stability of the AEI zeolite enabled usto adjust the framework Al distribution and the acidic propertiesby postcalcination. Thus, the prepared Cu/AEI zeolite with plentifuldicopper species exhibited a distinctive catalytic performance inthe continuous conversion of methane to methanol at 350 & DEG;C; astate-of-the-art methanol productivity of 40.8 & mu;mol & BULL;g(-1)& BULL;min(-1) (2448 & mu;mol & BULL;g(-1)& BULL;h(-1)) with a 45% selectivityand long-term reaction stability was achieved.
Role of Residual CO Molecules in OX–ZEO Relay Catalysis for Syngas Direct Conversion

Abstract:The traditional Fischer–Tropsch synthesis generates products with a distribution that follows a theoretical restriction, suffering from low selectivity toward desired products. Recent use of metal oxide–zeolite bifunctional catalysts has allowed a break of such a restriction, accompanied by residual CO molecules. In these systems, CO conversion is usually low and the presence of residual CO molecules would accompany the diffusion of intermediates into the zeolite pores and the subsequent transformation. However, the relationship between CO and the selectivity is elusive. Herein, in a CoMn oxides/H-β zeolite system, we demonstrate that CO molecules could not only improve the strength of the acidity and increase the ratio of B acid sites to L acid sites of the zeolite but also help to stabilize the intermediate allylic carbonium ion. Hence, high selectivities of 73.5% toward iso-paraffins and 61.2% toward isobutane were achieved. Abstract:The acidity and porosity of zeolite catalysts are crucial parameters affecting the catalytic performance. In this work, alkali treatment and metal species loading were used to modify the porosity and acidity of ZSM-5 zeolite to prepare an efficient catalyst for the 1,2-dichloroethane cracking reaction. After optimization, the highly active catalyst Zn (1%) /ZSM-5-120 was obtained, and 78% conversion of EDC and 99% selectivity toward VCM could be achieved under the conditions of 300 °C and 3.0 h −1 (WHSV). A detailed investigation was conducted on the effects of acidity, texture properties and metal species loaded on ZSM-5 zeolite on the 1,2-dichloroethane cracking reaction.

Abstract:Thermal catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation of ethane with O2 is extensively studied as an approach for ethene production, but this approach is energy intensive and bears overoxidation, high cost and safety concerns. Herein, we present ZnO-supported Pt nanoparticles are highly active and selective for dehydrogenating ethane to ethene by simulated sunlight via a photo-supported Mars-van Krevelen mechanism. The Pt/ZnO catalyst achieves a high ethane-to-ethene conversion rate of 867.8 μmol h-1 g-1 and an excellent selectivity of 97.56%. Besides, it is also coking-resistant and can be readily revived by exposure to O2 for refilling the consumed lattice oxygen to preserve its original activity. It is revealed that the Pt species facilitate C2H4 desorption from the catalyst to inhibit overoxidation and enhance the separation of light-induced charges to boost photocatalytic efficiency. Whilst the photogenerated holes on ZnO are captured by surface lattice oxygen to generate active O•- species extracting H atoms from adsorbed C2H6 to produce C2H4. In-situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy is applied to detect the key intermediates and thus propose the possible catalytic EDH process over the Pt/ZnO photocatalyst.

Abstract:A series of submicron ZSM-5-supported chromium oxide catalysts were prepared and characterized by XRD, N2 adsorption, 27Al MAS NMR, SEM, XPS, laser Raman spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance UV-Vis spectroscopy. The catalytic performance of these materials during ethane dehydrogenation in the presence of CO2 was investigated. The catalysts exhibited both high activity and stability, with an ethane conversion of ∼65% and ethylene yield of ∼49% without any obvious deactivation following 50 h. Characterization results show that the excellent catalytic performance results from the high degree of dispersion of CrOx species on the submicron ZSM-5 surface. Both a high Si/Al ratio and the use of the Na-form of the ZSM-5 support were found to favor CrOx dispersion. The promotional effect of CO2 on the dehydrogenation reaction was quite evident and can be attributed to the reverse water-gas shift reaction.

Supported chromium oxide,nanostructured oxide and some zeolite catalysts exhibit excellent catalytic performance. The main function of CO2 is to remove the produced H2 by reversed water-gas shift reaction and to resist coke deposition during ethane dehydrogenation. The reaction mechanism is also discussed.

Abstract:This work studies the reaction mechanism and the role of CO 2 in ethane dehydrogenation to ethene over two types of Pt-Zn/ZSM-5 catalysts. The calculation results demonstrate that the Pt-Zn sites have different roles, and Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 is more active than Pt 3 Zn 1 /ZSM-5 due to more efficient Pt-Zn sites for dehydrogenation with the assistance of framework O of ZSM-5. CO 2 reacts with H- species generated from ethane dehydrogenation and creates new and facile H-consuming routes, thus promoting the reaction. The positive effect of CO 2 is more significant over Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 than Pt 3 Zn 1 /ZSM-5 owing to the largely reduced barrier of rate-limiting step. Zn 6 Pt 1 /ZSM-5 greatly suppresses the competitive side reaction of CO 2 with ethyl species, thus becoming a promising catalyst for ethene generation. This work deepens the mechanistic understanding of CO 2 -assisted dehydrogenation of light alkanes over Pt-Zn/ZSM-5 catalysts and unravels the important role of CO 2 , providing a useful reference for future catalyst design.

Study on the Zeolite Catalysts for Dimethyl Ether Synthesis from Methanol

Abstract:The activity of zeolite catalysts were evaluated using a pressure microreactor. The structure and the surface acidity of zeolite catalysts were studied using XRD, 2400 adsorber and NH 3- TPD. The results demonstrate that the strong - acid sites on zeolite surface form the active sites for dimethyl ether synthesis from ethanol, this kind of sites easily deactivate because of Na 2O poisoning, and the activity of zeolite catalysts decreases in the order of ZSM - 5>β>Y>γ - Al 2O 3-The influence of SiO 2/Al 2O 3 ratio, calcination temperature, grain size, and reaction conditions was also studied.

Abstract:Zeolites have been regarded as one of the most important catalysts in petrochemical industry due to their excellent catalytic performance. However, the sole micropores in zeolites severely limit their applications in oil refining and natural gas conversion. To solve the problem, mesoporous zeolites have been prepared by introducing mesopores into the zeolite crystals in recent years, and thus have the advantages of both mesostructured materials (fast diffusion and accessible for bulky molecules) and microporous zeolite crystals (strong acidity and high hydrothermal stability). In this review, after giving a brief introduction to preparation, structure, and characterization of mesoporous zeolites, we systematically summarize catalytic applications of these mesoporous zeolites as efficient catalysts in oil refining and natural gas conversion including catalytic cracking of heavy oil, alkylation, isomerization, hydrogenation, hydrodesulfurization, methane dehydroaromatization, methanol dehydration to dimethyl ether, methanol to olefins, and methanol to hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Direct transformation of methane into methanol with high selectivity under mild conditions is one of the holy grails in catalysis. The major challenges arise from the high stability of the primary C-H bonds and the facile overoxidation of methanol. Among the numerous catalytic materials applied, Cu/Fe-containing zeolite catalysts have garnered considerable efforts and intensive investigation due to their significant advantages and distinctive potential in direct and selective oxidation of methane into methanol. In this Prospect, we present the recent progress of the application of Cu/Fe-containing zeolites as catalysts for the direct oxidation of methane into methanol. Furthermore, the state-of-the-art ex / in situ characterization techniques applied to understand the intrinsic active sites and reaction mechanisms for Cu/Fe-containing zeolites are also highlighted. Finally, the open challenges and opportunities regarding rational design of catalysts, the development of correlative in situ / operando characterization technologies and the feasible approaches by coupling with external energy resources or with other promising C-C coupling processes, are examined for inspiring future directions.
