Abstract:The recognized therapeutic benefits from carbon monoxide (CO) have caused booming attention to develop a CO therapy for various major diseases, such as cancer. However, the controlled release of CO gas and the monitoring of the CO release are vitally important to the ondemand CO administration for a safe and efficient therapy, but greatly challenging. In this work, a new CO-releasing nanocomplex was constructed by the adsorption and coordination of manganese carbonyl ([MnBr(CO)(5)], abbreviated as MnCO) with a Ti-based metal-organic framework (Ti-MOF) to realize an intratumoral H2O2-triggered CO release and real-time CO release monitoring by fluorescence imaging. A high CO prodrug loading capacity (0.532g MnCO per gram Ti-MOF) is achieved due to the high surface area of Ti-MOF, and the intracellular H2O2-triggered CO release from the MnCO@Ti-MOF is realized to enable the nanocomplex selectively release CO in tumor cells and kill tumor cells rather than normal cells. Particularly significant is that the real-time fluorescence imaging monitoring of the CO release is realized based on an annihilation effect of the fluorescence after MnCO loading into Ti-MOF and an activation effect of the fluorescence after CO release from Ti-MOF. The quantitative relationship between the fluorescence intensity and the released CO amount is established in great favor of guiding on-demand CO administration. The results demonstrate the advantage of versatile MOFs for high efficient CO delivery and monitoring, which is critical for the improvement of the effectiveness of future therapeutic application.

Abstract:Carbon micro‐/nanocages have attracted great attention owing to their wide potential applications. Herein, a self‐templated strategy is presented for the synthesis of a hydrangea‐like superstructure of open carbon cages through morphology‐controlled thermal transformation of core@shell metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). Direct pyrolysis of core@shell zinc (Zn)@cobalt (Co)‐MOFs produces well‐defined open‐wall nitrogen‐doped carbon cages. By introducing guest iron (Fe) ions into the core@shell MOF precursor, the open carbon cages are self‐assembled into a hydrangea‐like 3D superstructure interconnected by carbon nanotubes, which are grown in situ on the Fe–Co alloy nanoparticles formed during the pyrolysis of Fe‐introduced Zn@Co‐MOFs. Taking advantage of such hierarchically porous superstructures with excellent accessibility, synergetic effects between the Fe and the Co, and the presence of catalytically active sites of both metal nanoparticles and metal–Nx species, this superstructure of open carbon cages exhibits efficient bifunctional catalysis for both oxygen evolution reaction and oxygen reduction reaction, achieving a great performance in Zn–air batteries.

Abstract:By one-step pyrolysis of a unique "cage-in-cage" cobalt metal-organic framework, nitrogen-doped carbon cubes embedded with numerous metallic Co nanoparticles were obtained. A considerable amount of Co particles was encapsulated in thin carbon shells and formed the core-shell-like Co@C structure. With about 60 wt% Co particles in the prepared sample, the nanocomposites of Co nanoparticles and nitrogen-doped carbon show electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with an efficiency comparable to the commercial Pt/C catalyst, but with better durability and methanol-tolerance performance. The metallic Co nanoparticles were found to play an important role in enhancing the ORR activity of the nanocomposites. This simple one-step pyrolysis method provides a novel synthetic route for the synthesis of core-shell-like Co@C nano-composites. The synthesized material represents a highly active non-precious metal catalyst for ORR.

Abstract:Due to their intriguing architectures as well as diversified functionalities and properties, cage-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are urgently demanded but are more challenging and scarce. A novel three-dimensional cage-based copper-organic framework [Cu4(μ4-SO4)(tpt)4]·[SO4] (1) (tpt = 2,4,6-tri(4-pyridinyl)-1,3,5-triazine) has been obtained through the assemble of rare [Cu4(μ4-SO4)] tetrahedral units and tpt ligands under solvothermal reaction condition. Compound 1 consists of two types of polyhedral cages with face-sharing configurations, and possesses a rare (3,12)-connected ttt topology. Moreover, the gas adsorption behavior investigation indicates that the activated 1a shows a high CO2 selective adsorption toward N2.

Abstract:Highlights • The recent advances in CO releasing nanomaterials for biological delivery of CO are reviewed. • The synthesis and properties of CORNMs, especially the release mechanisms and detection methods are discussed and listed. • A brief outlook on the future research of employing nanomaterials in CO biological release are explored and discussed. As an endogenous signaling molecule, carbon monoxide (CO) has emerged as an increasingly promising option regarding as gas therapy due to its positive pharmacological effects in various diseases. Owing to the gaseous nature and potential toxicity, it is particularly important to modulate the CO release dosages and targeted locations to elucidate the biological mechanisms of CO and facilitate its clinical applications. Based on these, diverse CO-releasing molecules (CORMs) have been developed for controlled release of CO in biological systems. However, practical applications of these CORMs are limited by several disadvantages including low stability, poor solubility, weak releasing controllability, random diffusion, and potential toxicity. In light of rapid developments and diverse advantages of nanomedicine, abundant nanomaterials releasing CO in controlled ways have been developed for therapeutic purposes across various diseases. Due to their nanoscale sizes, diversified compositions and modified surfaces, vast CO-releasing nanomaterials (CORNMs) have been constructed and exhibited controlled CO release in specific locations under various stimuli with better pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics. In this review, we present the recent progress in CORNMs according to their compositions. Following a concise introduction to CO therapy, CORMs and CORNMs, the representative research progress of CORNMs constructed from organic nanostructures, hybrid nanomaterials, inorganic nanomaterials, and nanocomposites is elaborated. The basic properties of these CORNMs, such as active components, CO releasing mechanisms, detection methods, and therapeutic applications, are discussed in detail and listed in a table. Finally, we explore and discuss the prospects and challenges associated with utilizing nanomaterials for biological CO release. Abstract:Metal complex-based photocatalysts are promising for CO2 reduction. Their catalytic performances greatly rely on the synergy of ligands and metal ions. Here, we demonstrate an assembly of covalent organic cage (COC) and metal ions for photocatalytic CO2 reduction. The coordinated metal serves as catalytically active site for CO2 reduction, while the cage not only chelates the metal site, but also enhances the local concentration of CO2 around metal site, and decreases the key intermediate reaction energy barrier, thereby promoting the CO2 reduction reaction kinetically and thermodynamically. Accordingly, a Ni metalized COC exhibited outstanding photocatalytic performance in CO2-to-CO conversion under visible light irradiation. This study highlights the feasibility and advantage of organic cages for the construction of photocatalysts for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract:Light-switchable composites have great potential to enable processes that can be controlled on demand, which is difficult to achieve with conventional materials that have stationary structures and properties. Here, we present a light-switchable metal–organic cage, NUT-102, structurally incorporated with pendant azobenzene groups for controllable CO 2 capture. Upon visible light irradiation, the trans isomerization of the azobenzene groups exposes the pores of NUT-102 and favors CO 2 adsorption. Conversely, upon ultraviolet light irradiation, the azobenzene groups undergo a conformation transformation from trans to cis isomerization, resulting in the sheltering of the pores and subsequently reducing CO 2 adsorption. Significantly, the light-switchable modulated CO 2 adsorption change amount can reach up to 65.2%. Moreover, density functional theory calculations further confirmed the controllable CO 2 adsorption behavior in NUT-102. The present study provides new insights into the development of novel light-switchable adsorbents tailored for controllable CO 2 adsorption.

Abstract:Different alkylamine molecules were post-synthetically tethered to the unsaturated Cr-III centers in the metal-organic framework MIL-101. The resultant metal-organic frameworks show almost no N-2 adsorption with significantly enhanced CO2 capture under ambient conditions as a result of the interaction between amine groups and CO2 molecules. Given the extraordinary stability, high CO2 uptake, ultrahigh CO2/N-2 selectivity, and mild regeneration energy, MIL-101-diethylenetriamine holds exceptional promise for post-combustion CO2 capture and CO2/N-2 separation.

Abstract:Based on a novel ligand 5-(2,6-bis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyridin-4-yl)isophthalic acid (H4BCP) with large skeletons, a unique porous framework {[Cu2(BCP)(H2O)2]·3DMF} n (1) assembled by nano-sized and censer-like [Cu30] cages is successfully obtained and structurally characterized. In 1, the large 1D channel in frameworks and window size in the nanocages can enrich methylene blue and capture CO2, exhibiting the promising applications in environmental protection. More importantly, the explorations on the cycloaddition reaction of CO2 and aziridines with various substituents suggest that 1 can serve as an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 conversion with aziridines in a solvent-free system, which can be reused at least ten times without any obvious loss in catalytic activity. This is the first example of metal-organic framework (MOF)-based catalysts in converting CO2 into high-value oxazolidinones through activating aziridines and CO2, further extending the applications of MOFs materials in catalysis.
Metal–Organic Framework Decorated Cuprous Oxide Nanowires for Long‐lived Charges Applied in Selective Photocatalytic CO 2 Reduction to CH 4

Abstract:Improving the stability of cuprous oxide (Cu2O) is imperative to its practical applications in artificial photosynthesis. In this work, Cu2O nanowires are encapsulated by metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of Cu-3(BTC)(2) (BTC=1,3,5-benzene tricarboxylate) using a surfactant-free method. Such MOFs not only suppress the water vapor-induced corrosion of Cu2O but also facilitate charge separation and CO2 uptake, thus resulting in a nanocomposite representing 1.9 times improved activity and stability for selective photocatalytic CO2 reduction into CH4 under mild reaction conditions. Furthermore, direct transfer of photogenerated electrons from the conduction band of Cu2O to the LUMO level of non-excited Cu-3(BTC)(2) has been evidenced by time-resolved photoluminescence. This work proposes an effective strategy for CO2 conversion by a synergy of charge separation and CO2 adsorption, leading to the enhanced photocatalytic reaction when MOFs are integrated with metal oxide photocatalyst.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COF) or metal–organic frameworks have attracted significant attention for various applications due to their intriguing tunable micro/mesopores and composition/functionality control. Herein, a coordination‐induced interlinked hybrid of imine‐based covalent organic frameworks and Mn‐based metal–organic frameworks (COF/Mn‐MOF) based on the MnN bond is reported. The effective molecular‐level coordination‐induced compositing of COF and MOF endows the hybrid with unique flower‐like microsphere morphology and superior lithium‐storage performances that originate from activated Mn centers and the aromatic benzene ring. In addition, hollow or core–shell MnS trapped in N and S codoped carbon (MnS@NS‐C‐g and MnS@NS‐C‐l) are also derived from the COF/Mn‐MOF hybrid and they exhibit good lithium‐storage properties. The design strategy of COF–MOF hybrid can shed light on the promising hybridization on porous organic framework composites with molecular‐level structural adjustment, nano/microsized morphology design, and property optimization.

Abstract:A new microporous Ni-based metal-organic framework (Ni-MOF-1) was synthesized by reaction of Ni (NO)(3)center dot 6H(2)O with the binary ligands of tetracarboxylic 2,3,5,6-tetrakis(4-carboxyphenyl)pyrazine (H4TCPP) and 4,4'-bipyridine under solvothermal reaction. The single crystal X-ray diffraction indicates that Ni-MOF-1 possesses a three-dimensional porous network with novel trinuclear Ni-3(OH)(2)(COO)(4)(HCOO)(4) clusters, exhibiting high CO2 uptakes of 37.57 cm(3) g(-1) and high selectivity of CO2 over N-2 (42.89) at 273 K.

Abstract:Porous organometallic nanomaterials are a new class of materials based on a three-dimensional structure. They have excellent applications in different fields, but their applications in gas storage and separation have not been fully developed. CO2 adsorption storage and hydrocarbon separation has been a challenging industrial problem. Several typical molecular adsorbents have been used to study the separation, but the problems of long-term stability, high selectivity and synthetic complexity of these adsorbents remain to be solved. Here, we have designed and synthesized tetrahedral metal supramolecular nanocage with custom cavities based on the unique rigid structure of triptycene derivatives. Using the unique discrete porous structure of tetrahedral metal nanocages, the gas adsorption and separation performance of the metal supramolecular nanocage was investigated. By analyzing the adsorption and desorption isotherms and the multi-component competitive adsorption curves, we noticed that the tetrahedral supramolecular nanocages had good CO2 storage capacity and good separation capacity for C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/N2. All these indicate that porous organic metal nanomaterials are expected to be a new energy saving separation material.

Abstract:Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which consist of central metal nodes and organic linkers, constitute a fast growing class of crystalline porous materials with excellent application potential. Herein, a series of Mn-based multimetallic MOF (bimetallic and trimetallic MIL-100) nano-octahedra are prepared by a facile one-pot synthetic strategy. The types and proportions of the incorporated elements can be tuned while retaining the original topological structure. The introduction of other metal ions is verified at the atomic level by combining X-ray absorption fine structure experiments and theoretical calculations. Furthermore, these multimetallic Mn-based MIL-100 nano-octahedra are utilized as sulfur hosts to prepare cathodes for Li–S batteries. The MnNi-MIL-100@S cathode exhibits the best Li–S battery performance among all reported MIL-100@S composite cathode materials, with a reversible capacity of ≈708.8 mAh g−1 after 200 cycles. The synthetic strategy described herein is utilized to incorporate metal ions into the MOF architecture, of which the parent monometallic MOF nano-octahedra cannot be prepared directly, thus rationally generating novel multimetallic MOFs. Importantly, the strategy also allows for the general synthesis and study of various micro-/nanoscale MOFs in the energy storage field.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide to valuable chemicals is a sustainable technology that can achieve a carbon‐neutral energy cycle in the environment. Electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) processes using metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), featuring atomically dispersed active sites, large surface area, high porosity, controllable morphology, and remarkable tunability, have attracted considerable research attention. Well‐defined MOFs can be constructed to improve conductivity, introduce active centers, and form carbon‐based single‐atom catalysts (SACs) with enhanced active sites that are accessible for the development of CO2 conversion. In this review, the progress on pristine MOFs, MOF hybrids, and MOF‐derived carbon‐based SACs is summarized for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. Finally, the limitations and potential improvement directions with respect to the advancement of MOF‐related materials for the field of research are discussed. These summaries are expected to provide inspiration on reasonable design to develop stable and high‐efficiency MOFs‐based electrocatalysts for CO2RR.

Abstract:Non-precious metal nitrogen-doped carbonaceous materials have attracted tremendous attention in the field of electrochemical energy storage and conversion. Herein, we report the designed synthesis of a novel series of Co-N-C nanocomposites and their evaluation of electrochemical properties. Novel yolkshell structured Co nanoparticles@polymer materials are fabricated from the facile coating polymer strategy on the surface of ZIF-67. After calcination in nitrogen atmosphere, the Co–N–C nanocomposites in which cobalt metal nanoparticles are embedded in the highly porous and graphitic carbon matrix are successfully achieved. The cobalt nanoparticles containing cobalt metal crystallites with an oxidized shell and/or smaller(or amorphous) cobalt-oxide deposits appear on the surface of graphitic carbons. The prepared Co–N–C nanoparticles showed favorable electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reactions,which is attributed to its high graphitic degree, large surface area and the large amount existence of Co–N active sites.
