Abstract:Phase transition is a prominent issue for the supercritical CO 2 compressors operating near the critical region. The non-equilibrium behavior of phase transition makes it difficult to accurately predict performance under these conditions. A non-equilibrium phase transition model is proposed to analyze the aero-thermodynamic performance of supercritical CO 2 centrifugal compressors with different inlet conditions. The model examines phase change characteristics and compressor performance under variable operating conditions. The results indicate that this model can effectively predict the aero-thermodynamic performance of compressor near critical conditions, with an average error of less than 2% in the performance curves. The inconsistency between low-temperature and low-pressure regions, along with the increase in liquid phase volume, are typical characteristics of non-equilibrium phase transition in supercritical CO 2 compressors. The non-equilibrium effect of phase transition can reduce the leakage loss at high flow rates, but also increases the likelihood of stall at low flow rates. Furthermore, the concept of "non-equilibrium degree" (NED) is introduced to quantify these effects. When NED exceeds 0.2, the isentropic efficiency of the compressor decreases by 15.1% compared to its maximum efficiency. Designing inlet conditions for supercritical CO 2 compressors with NED below 0.1 is more suitable because it has a larger inlet flowrate and higher efficiency.

Abstract:The supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton power cycle is more effective than the conventional power cycle and is more widely applicable to heat sources. The inlet working conditions of the compressor have a higher influence on their operating performance because the thermophysical properties of the CO2 vary dramatically close to the critical point. The flow in the sCO2 compressor is simulated and the compressor performance is analyzed. The results show that the sCO2 centrifugal compressor operates outside of its intended parameters due to the change in inlet temperature. The sCO2 compressor requires more power as the inlet temperature increases. The compressor power is 582 kW when the inlet temperature is at 304 K. But the power is doubled when the inlet temperature increases to 314 K, and the change in the isentropic efficiency is within 5%. The increase in the inlet temperature significantly reduces the risk of condensation in centrifugal compressors. When the heat load of the sCO2 power system changes, the inlet pressure to the turbine can be kept constant by regulating the rotational speed of compressors. Abstract:The power system using carbon dioxide (CO2) as the working fluid has been the research hotspot due to its high performance and potential for use in many energy fields. In this paper, the difference of compression processes between supercritical CO2 (S–CO2) and transcritical CO2 (T-CO2) power cycles is researched, and their effects on the thermodynamic performances of power cycles and equipment are discussed. The results show that the thermal efficiency and net output power increase with the decreasing of the compressor/pump inlet temperature, and there is a big jump near the critical temperature. The condensation margin is more sensitive to the temperature than the pressure near the critical point. To minimize the compressor input power and to guarantee the reliability of equipment, the inlet parameters of compressors should be designed and operated carefully. And the inlet velocity of compressors should be set below the usually recommend value.

Abstract:The supercritical carbon dioxide (S-CO2) Brayton cycle efficiency increases as the compressor inlet condition approaches the critical point. However, the thermodynamic properties of CO2 vary dramatically near the critical point, and phase change is most likely to happen. Both cavitation and condensation bring about significant adverse effects on the performance of compressors. In this paper, the quantitative effects of nonequilibrium condensation and cavitation on the performance of an S-CO2 centrifugal compressor with different inlet-relative entropy values are investigated. The properties of CO2 were provided by the real-gas property table, and the nonequilibrium phase-change model was adopted. The numerical simulation method with the nonequilibrium phase-change model was validated in the Lettieri nozzle and Sandia compressor. Furthermore, simulations were carried out in a two-stage centrifugal compressor under conditions of various inlet-relative entropy values. The type of nonequilibrium phase change can be distinguished by inlet-relative entropy. Cavitation makes the choke mass flow rate decrease due to the drop in the speed of sound. Condensation mainly occurs on the leading edge of the main blade at a large mass flow rate, but cavitation occurs on the splitter. The condensation is more evenly distributed on the main blade, but the cavitation is mainly centered on the leading edge.

Abstract:The relationship between the compressor efficiency and compression ratio was analyzed in terms of the superheat temperature,the refrigerant temperature at the gas cooler outlet,and the high pressure on the coefficient of performance(COP) to optimize a transcritical automobile air conditioning system using carbon dioxide as refrigerant.The calculated results show that optimal high pressure and superheat temperature for the system increase with increasing gas cooler outlet temperature,and that the compressor efficiency and the gas cooler efficiency are the main factors affecting the system performance with the effects of the superheat temperature being negligible at sufficiently high pressures.

Abstract:Abstract Closed Joule–Brayton cycles operating with carbon dioxide in supercritical conditions (sCO2) are nowadays collecting a significant scientific interest, due to their high potential efficiency, the compactness of their components, and the flexibility that makes them suitable to exploit diverse energy sources. However, the technical implementation of sCO2 power systems introduces new challenges related to the design and operation of the components. The compressor, in particular, operates in a thermodynamic condition close to the critical point, whereby the fluid exhibits significant non-ideal gas effects and is prone to phase change in the intake region of the machine. These new challenges require novel design concepts and strategies, as well as proper tools to achieve reliable predictions. In this study, we consider an exemplary sCO2 power cycle with the main compressor operating in proximity to the critical point, with an intake entropy level of the fluid lower than the critical value. In this condition, the phase change occurs as evaporation/flashing, thus resembling cavitation phenomena observed in liquid pumps, even though with specific issues associated with compressibility effects occurring in both the phases. The flow configuration is therefore highly nonconventional and demands the development of proper tools for fluid and flow modeling, which are instrumental for the compressor design. The paper discusses the modeling issues from the thermodynamic perspective, then highlighting their implications on compressor aerodynamics. We propose tailored models to account for the effect of the phase change in 0D mean-line design tools as well as in fully three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid-dynamic (CFD) simulations: the former was previously validated for sCO2 compressors, the latter is validated in this paper against experiments of compressible flows of supercritical sCO2 in nozzles. In this way, a strategy of investigation is built-up as a combination of mean-line tools, industrial design experience, and CFD for detailed flow analysis. The investigation reveals that the potential onset of the phase change might alter significantly the performance and operation of the compressor, both in design and in off-design conditions, according to three main mechanisms: incidence effect, front-loading, and channel blockage.

Abstract:The Brayton cycle, with supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO 2 ) centrifugal compressors at its core, has received widespread attention for its high efficiency and energy savings. Therefore, the in-depth exploration of the internal flow field behaviour of sCO 2 centrifugal compressors becomes especially critical. In the present study, we develop a mathematical model to evaluate the performance of a sCO 2 compressor considering non-equilibrium condensation in transonic flows. It is validated that the model can well predict the sCO 2 phase change and is a reliable vehicle for the performance analysis in this study. Further, by incorporating the cubic spline curve extrapolation method, the model can handle the complex thermodynamic properties of CO 2 under a metastable state. Then, this study presents a series of analyses for the effects under different conditions, such as different inlet temperatures and rotational speeds, on the flow field characteristics and performance of the compressor. It's further found that with an increase in inlet temperature, the condensation intensity is suppressed and the condensation position moves backwards. At the 50% blade span, the liquid phase fraction decreases from 5.15% at 306 K to 1.32% at 325 K. Finally, from an energy perspective, this study implements a quantitative analysis of the exergy destruction and exergy efficiency of the compressor. The results show that the exergy efficiency under the wet steam model is quite different when the inlet temperature changes. With the decrease of rotating speeds, the exergy efficiency will decrease. The exergy efficiency reaches 81.35% at 20,000 rpm, which is 51.02% higher than that at 10,000 rpm.

Abstract:Supercritical CO2 (S-CO2) power cycles have demonstrated significant performance improvements in concentrated solar and nuclear applications. These cycles promise an increase in thermal-to-electric conversion efficiency of up to 50% over conventional gas turbines (Wright, S., 2012, “Overview of S-CO2 Power Cycles,” Mech. Eng., 134(1), pp. 40–43), and have become a priority for research, development, and deployment. In these applications the CO2 is compressed to pressures above the critical value using radial compressors. The thermodynamic state change of the working fluid is close to the critical point and near the vapor–liquid equilibrium region where phase change effects are important. This paper presents a systematic assessment of condensation on the performance and stability of centrifugal compressors operating in S-CO2. The approach combines numerical simulations with experimental tests. The objectives are to assess the relative importance of two-phase effects on the internal flow behavior and to define the implications for radial turbomachinery design. The condensation onset is investigated in a systematic manner approaching the critical point. A nondimensional criterion is established that determines whether condensation might occur. This criterion relates the time required for stable liquid droplets to form, which depends on the expansion through the vapor–pressure curve, and the residence time of the flow under saturated conditions. Two-phase flow effects can be considered negligible when the ratio of the two time scales is much smaller than unity. The study shows that condensation is not a concern away from the critical point. Numerical two-phase calculations supported by experimental data indicate that the timescale associated with nucleation is much longer than the residence time of the flow in the saturated region, leaving little opportunity for the fluid to condense. Pressure measurements in a converging diverging nozzle show that condensation cannot occur at the level of subcooling characteristic of radial compressors away from the critical point. The implications are not limited to S-CO2 power cycles but extend to applications of radial machines for dense, saturated gases. In the immediate vicinity of the critical point, two-phase effects are expected to become more prominent due to longer residence times. However, the singular behavior of thermodynamic properties at the critical point prevents the numerical schemes from capturing important gas dynamic effects. These limitations require experimental assessment, which is the focus of ongoing and future research.

Abstract:Compressed CO2 energy storage is a new type of energy storage with high energy storage density and a compact structure. Understanding the system’s dynamic operational characteristics is crucial for optimizing parameters and developing control strategies. We established two dynamic compressed supercritical CO2 energy storage systems (SC-CCESs) without additional cold and heat sources and simulated their performance under design conditions. The results show that the single-stage system outperforms the double-stage system. The single-stage system is simulated from design conditions to periodic dynamic operating conditions. Energy and exergy analyses of the single-stage compression system were conducted, confirming that the model aligns with the first and second laws of thermodynamics. The dynamic behavior of the compressor, turbine, and storage tanks was analyzed, and a sensitivity analysis of key system parameters was performed. After optimization, the system’s RTE improved to 63.35%, a 3.09% points increase, and the exergy loss decreased by 10.37% points.

Abstract:Supercritical CO2 closed-loop Brayton cycles offer the potential of better economical and practical efficiency due to its compact size and smaller compression work as compared with some traditional working fluids cycles, in which compressor is the key component. In this paper, the aerodynamic design and impeller aerodynamic optimization were conducted for a single stage centrifugal compressor with a combined vaneless and vaned diffuser, operating with CO2 slightly above the vapor-liquid critical point. The NIST REFPROP database was used for the computation of supercritical CO2 properties in design analysis and numerical investigation. The flow characteristics of the supercritical CO2 compressor were investigated by NUMECA FINE/Turbo. In order to weaken the low pressure regions, a vaneless diffuser was applied in this design, which would control and reduce the distribution differences of fluid thermodynamic states and increase fluid static pressure. The results indicate that there are no obvious low pressure regions occurring close to the leading edge of vaned diffuser. So it is observed in the design process that the vaneless diffuser could improve the aerodynamic performance of supercritical CO2 compressor.Compared with the operating conditions of the compressor only under centrifugal force, the pressure load from the aerodynamic analysis and the centrifugal load due to high speed of rotation were considered in the study of the stress and deformation of the structure of impeller by ANSYS/Mechanical. It can be concluded that supercritical CO2 provides unique properties for the compressor working process, which have a significant influence on finite element modeling in structural analysis. For the present design the maximum von Mises stress and total deformation are shown much smaller than the maximum allowable values, and thus the compressor could work in a wide range of operating conditions.

Abstract:The general mathematical model of the transcritical CO2 compressor was presented to assess the compressor efficiencies including isentropic efficiency and volumetric efficiency based on the thermodynamic theories and compressor structures. Furthermore, the prototype of the transcritical CO2 system was established and relative measurements were carried out to evaluate the precision of the simulation. Results showed that the volumetric efficiency of the compressor kept decreasing while the isentropic efficiency increased first and then kept almost constant and even declined with the increase in the pressure ratio. Besides, the indicated efficiency and volumetric efficiency declined slightly with the decrease in the suction density corresponding to the increase in suction superheating. As for the effects of compressor structures on the performances, the indicated efficiency increased sharply and then decreased gradually, while the volumetric efficiency kept declining with the increase in the cylinder diameter-to-height ratio, respectively.

Abstract:The supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycle has good prospects for use in many energy applications. Ensuring the stable operation of the power cycle is an important issue. The inlet condition of the main compressor in the sCO2 recompression cycle is close to the critical point of CO2 and the physical properties of CO2 change drastically near the critical point, so the study of inlet parameter change behavior of the main compressor is of great significance to the stable operation of the equipment and the system. This paper investigates the performance of an sCO2 recompression power cycle system under off-design conditions with different cooling and heating conditions. Unlike previous studies, this paper uses more accurate compressor and heat exchanger models to simulate the system for off-designed performance. A 1-D optimization prediction model of the compressor and a density-based segmented heat exchanger model are introduced to predict the performance changes of the system. The operating conditions, performance, and stability of the compressor under different cooling and heating conditions were compared. The results show that variations in different cooling and heating conditions change the inlet temperature of the compressor, causing the sCO2 compressor to deviate from optimal operation. As the inlet temperature increases, the power consumption of the compressor increases. At an inlet temperature of 305 K, the power is 1.93 MW (main compressor, MC) and 2.17 MW (recompressor, RC). When the inlet temperature increases to 310 K, the power increases by more than 10 %. The largest change in system efficiency is 3.76 % for a change in cooling conditions, and the largest change in compressor speed is 14.23 % (MC) and 7.79 % (RC) for a change in heating conditions, respectively. The operating condition of the main compressor moves far away from the surge line when its inlet temperature increases, which means the operation of the main compressor is more stable in this situation. The results of this paper contribute to the stable operation of the sCO2 recompression cycle.
Thermodynamic Analysis of Brayton Cycles Using Supercritical Carbon Dioxide and its Mixture as Working Fluid

Abstract:In this paper,the first and the second laws of thermodynamics are applied to analyze the thermodynamic performance of the split flow,pre-compression and modified recompression Brayton cycles.Firstly,the influences of the compressor and turbine inlet conditions (temperature,pressure) on the cycles performance are discussed.Furthermore,the Brayton cycles using mixture working fluid based on carbon dioxide (CO2) are proposed,and the typical modified recompression cycle is taken as an example to show the performance.The effects of different adding gases and the proportion of a gas in CO2 are analyzed.The results indicate that higher turbine inlet conditions can improve the efficiency of different cycles;the influence of the comperssoer inlet pressure on the cycle efficiency is greater than that of the compressor inlet temperature;adding krypton gas and xenon gas can improve the cycle thermal efficiency;the largest improvements of the modified recompression cycel thermal efficiency are 1.44％ and 3.04％ when adding 50％ krypton gas and 26％ xenon gas,respectively;however,adding nitrogen gas decreases the cycle efficiency.

Abstract:Based on the consideration of sustainable development and energy efficient transformation, people propose using renewable energy to upgrade traditional power generation systems. The supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) Brayton cycle has a great utilization potentiality in thermodynamic systems, such as solar thermal power generation systems. When the CO2 fluid flows into the compressors of sCO2 power systems, there is a risk of nonequilibrium condensation due to local expansion and acceleration, which seriously threatens the stability of the whole system. The convergent-divergent nozzle is usually used to study non-equilibrium condensation. In this paper, the wet steam model is used to simulate the non-equilibrium condensation of the CO2 fluid near its critical region in a convergent-divergent nozzle. The phase change model and the thermophysical equation of state are verified by experimental data. The non-equilibrium condensation process is analyzed, and the droplet nucleation process and droplet growth process are described. Non-equilibrium condensation releases the latent heat and forms a condensation shock wave. The influences of the shock wave effect on temperature, pressure, and other parameters are discussed. The initial condensation position and critical subcooled temperature under different inlet conditions are analyzed.
Impact of Inlet Conditions on Performance of a Supercritical CO2 Centrifugal Compressor

Abstract:The centrifugal compressor is one of the core components in a supercritical carbon dioxide (SCO2) Brayton cycle, in which the inlet state is near the critical point of CO2 to reduce the compression work. However, the thermodynamic properties of CO2 change dramatically near the critical point. Therefore, the performance and flow in a SCO2 compressor will be sensitive to the variation of inlet conditions. In this paper, a centrifugal compressor stage designed by the in-house code for a 20MW supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle is numerically investigated with the variation of considered inlet state point. Firstly, to take account of the nonlinear variation of the properties near the critical point, the accuracy of look-up table of CO2 properties is evaluated and implemented into the commercial CFD software. Then, the effect of small change in inlet temperature or pressure near the critical point on the compression process and performance is investigated, and the flow fields in compressor with different inlet states are compared. It is shown that the CFD-predicted compressor performance is highly sensitive to the resolution of look-up table as well as the inlet conditions. Slight increase in inlet temperature or inlet pressure will cause a significant decrease in pressure ratio. The impact of small change of inlet state on the flow structures are mainly concentrated on the first half of impeller blade passage.

Abstract:The low power consumption of the near-critical compressor is the key factor for the high efficiency of supercritical CO 2 Brayton cycle. In the numerical simulation of the compressor, the rapid changes in the thermophysical properties of the CO 2 near the critical point make it difficult to capture the condensation phenomenon. This paper investigates the influence of fluid physical properties on the condensation phenomenon. Firstly, the differences in the physical properties of CO 2 in the SRK EOS (equation of state), PR EOS, and SW EOS are compared. Then, the simulation of nozzles and compressors were carried out and discussed. Results show that the condensation positions predicted by the three EOSs are basically the same. Compared with SW EOS, the disparities between the maximum condensation mass fraction predicted by the PR and SRK EOSs is 5.7% and 11.5%, and that of total pressure ratio is 0.3% and 3.8%, respectively. The results show that PR EOS can be considered for numerical simulation in engineering practice. Since its physical property calculation results are closer to the actual physical properties while the physical properties change more gently, it has considerable accuracy and numerical stability.

Abstract:In recent years, renewable energy, particularly solar energy and wind energy, has demonstrated robust growth worldwide. However, the intermittent nature of these energy sources causes significant challenges for the security and reliability of grid, which limits the penetration growth in power market. To enable a higher penetration of renewable energy sources and satisfy the demand for peak shaving and valley filling of the grid, one possibility is to couple them with energy storage systems. In this study, two supercritical compressed carbon dioxide energy storage systems coupled with concentrating solar thermal storage are proposed. One is a simple compression cycle, and the other is a split compression cycle. Both thermodynamic and economic performance have been investigated numerically. The effects of energy storage pressure, heating temperature, thermal oil mass flow rate and split ratio are discussed. The results indicate that under the designed condition, there exists a maximum energy storage efficiency for the simple cycle when the heating temperature is lower than 538.15K. Continuing to increase heating temperature, the efficiency first increases from 64% to 73.9% rapidly as the total pressure ratio rises from 3 to 5. However, the improvement of it will be limited after the pressure ratio exceeds 5. Besides, if the thermal oil mass flow rate rises, the efficiency also has a maximum value, which appears between 150kg/s and 160kg/s. Finally, for the split cycle, there exists an optimal value. And the optimal condition can promote the Dynamic Payback Period and Levelized Cost of Energy to fall about 2 years and 6.1% compared to the simple cycle.

Theoretical Analysis of Isentropic Exponent Effects on the Internal Flow of Supercritical CO2 Centrifugal Compressors

Abstract:The isentropic exponent in the near-critical region can sharply change with operation condition transitions of a closed Brayton cycle, thus having significant impacts on the compressor aerodynamic performance and the internal flow of the compressor embedded into the cycle. This paper investigates the isentropic exponent effects of the supercritical carbon dioxide (CO2) using theoretical analyses and three-dimensional computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations. The theoretical analysis reveals that the increasing isentropic exponent mitigates the impeller work coefficient and the impeller outlet Mach number but raises the suction side Mach number of the impeller blade and blade loading at the leading edge. The CFD results provide validations for the theoretical results. Based on the findings, a suggestion is offered to guide the physical experiment design of a centrifugal compressor with supercritical CO2 as its working fluid.

Abstract:Now more and more interests are focused on carbon dioxide, a natural working fluid in energy systems. Flow and heat transfer performance of supercritical carbon dioxide are investigated in the present paper. The transient flow is calculated in a horizontal tube. The obtained results show an enhanced heat transfer is found when pressure is below 12MPa, comparing to water as working fluid. Furthermore, related natures are obtained and discussed in the paper.
