Abstract:The fluorite materials has received particular attention in electron optics due to its favorable optical properties. However, further exploration of these materials in the field of Thermoelectric (TE) is hampered by the lack of studies on the lattice thermal transport properties. In this paper, we use first-principles calculation, combined with self-consistent phonon theory, compressive sensing lattice dynamics and Boltzmann transport equation to study the microscopic mechanism of lattice thermal transport properties in AF2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba) with fluorite structure. We investigate the effects of three phonon and four phonon scattering and quartic anharmonic renormalization of phonon frequencies on this system. The results show that the bonding strength of atoms A (Ca, Sr, Ba) plays an important role in the thermal transport process, and the third-order anharmonicity also plays an important role in this system. Meanwhile, the role of the quartic anharmonicity cannot be ignored. Our findings not only fill in the gaps in the study of lattice thermal transport of fluorite materials, but also deepen the comprehensive understanding of the high κL value of fluorite materials.

Abstract:The lattice thermal conductivity of lithium fluoride (LiF) is accurately computed from a first-principles approach based on an iterative solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Real-space finite-difference supercell approach is employed to generate the second-and third-order interatomic force constants. The related physical quantities of LiF are calculated by the second-and third-order potential interactions at 30 K -1000 K. The calculated lattice thermal conductivity 13.89 W/(m K) for LiF at room temperature agrees well with the experimental value, demonstrating that the parameter-free approach can furnish precise descriptions of the lattice thermal conductivity for this material. Besides, the Born effective charges, dielectric constants and phonon spectrum of LiF accord well with the existing data. The lattice thermal conductivities for the iterative solution of BTE are also presented.

Abstract:We report the theoretical study of the flux-lattice melting in the novel iron-based superconductor LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs and LaO_0.925F_0.075FeAs. Using the Hypernetted-Chain closure and an efficient algorithm, we calculate the two-dimensional one-component plasma pair distribution functions, static structure factors and direct correlation functions at various temperatures. The Hansen-Verlet freezing criterion is shown to be valid for vortex-liquid freezing in type-II superconductors. Flux-lattice meting lines for LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs and LaO_0.925F_0.075FeAs are predicted through the combination of the density functional theory and the mean-field substrate approach.

Abstract:The lattice thermal conductivity of CsCl crystal is theoretically investigated from a first-principles theoretical approach based on an iterative solution of the Boltzmann transport equation. Real-space finite-difference supercell approach is employed to generate the harmonic and anharmonic interatomic force constants. Phonon frequencies, velocities, and specific heat capacity as well as anharmonic properties are then obtained and applied to calculate the bulk thermal conductivity of CsCl crystal at the temperatures ranging from 20K to 700K. The calculated lattice thermal conductivity 1.14W/mK of CsCl at room temperature agrees well with the experimental value, demonstrating that this parameter-free approach can provide a good description for the thermal transport of this material. The RTA and iterative solution of BTE are both presented. Our results show that both methods can obtain the thermal conductivity successfully.
Influence of Quartic Anharmonicity on Lattice Dynamics and Thermal Transport Properties of 16 Antifluorite Structures

Abstract:This paper uses advanced first-principles calculation methods, combined with self-consistent phonon (SCP) theory, compressive sensing (CS) lattice dynamics, and Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), to calculate and study the lattice dynamics and phonon transport of 16 antifluorite structures. The lattice thermal conductivity ( kappa L ) of these materials was studied in detail by analyzing the quartic anharmonic renormalization of phonon frequencies and four-phonon (4ph) scattering, revealing the significant influence of quartic anharmonicity on their thermal transport properties. Our study shows that strong quartic anharmonic renormalization is observed for eight materials, leading to enhanced kappa L . In contrast, for the five materials, the weak quartic anharmonic effect leads to negligible changes in thermal conductivity. Three materials exhibit reduced kappa L due to phonon anharmonic renormalization. Furthermore, 4ph scattering rates (SRs) are important for many of the materials studied and can offset changes in frequency, leading to a reduction in thermal conductivity. At the same time, our calculations give an approximately linear relationship between kappa L and 4ph scattering, which suggests that structures with low kappa L have stronger 4ph scattering. Simultaneously, we chose Li 2 O, characterized by high kappa L , and Rb 2 Te, known for its low kappa L , to thoroughly examine their microscopic thermal transport mechanisms. This involved detailed analysis of the thermal conductivity spectrum kappa L ( omega ), scattering phase space, group velocity, and scattering processes. Finally, this study provides insights into the underlying physical mechanisms of thermal transport in 16 antifluorite materials and highlights the need to consider 4ph scattering for thermal transport in materials.

Abstract:The anisotropic optical properties for superconductor LaFeAsO have been studied by full-potentiallinearized augmented plane wave(FLAPW) method based on density functional theory.In order to simulate the temperature effects,Lorentzian broadening(set as δ = 0.10 eV) is added into optical matrix elements during the calculation in these spectra.The optical conductivity spectra σ(ω),the reflectivity spectra R(ω) and electron energy loss spectra have been calculated.LaFeAsO is an anisotropic single crystal.The optical conductivity spectra along x-axis display quite different features in comparison with those of z-axis entirely,and the reflectivity spectra coincide well with the corresponding electron energy loss spectra especially about the characteristic peaks.In the optic conductivity spectra,the first intraband absorption along x-axis appear at 1.3 eV while it is at1.5 eV along z-axis.By further analysis,the properties are mainly caused by electronic transitions between the various states of the Fe atom.

Abstract:There are numerous industrial and technological uses for minerals from the fluorite group. Fluorite group minerals, according to Dana's mineralogy, are simple metallic fluorides with a cubic crystal structure that belongs to the space group Fm-3m (225). Fluorite, Stronitiofluorite, Frankdicksonite, and Fluorocronite are the members of fluorite group minerals. These are F-centered cubic minerals, also known as halides, having general formula MF2, where M = Ca, Sr, Ba, and Pb. These minerals have cubic (Fm-3m), orthorhombic (Pnma), and hexagonal (P63/mmc) phases at different pressure. In the present study, the structural optimization of CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, and PbF2 with cubic (Fm-3m) phase has been performed by Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation using Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) with Quantum Espresso code. The electronic band structure of fluorite group minerals has been investigated. From the electronic band structure, it has been found that these minerals are insulator having indirect band gap. Phonon dispersion curves for CaF2, SrF2, BaF2, and PbF2 confirms that fluorite minerals in cubic phase are mechanically stable. LO -TO splitting in the phonon dispersion curves indicates that these mineral have ionic bonding. Also, lattice parameter, elastic constants, bulk modulus, Young's modulus, shear modulus, Poisson's ratio, Pugh's ratio and Cauchy pressure for fluorite minerals have been calculated using Voigt-Reuss-Hill approximation, and the results have been analyzed with experimental data.

Abstract:A detailed study of the high-pressure structural properties, lattice dynamics and band structures of perovskite structured fluorides KZnF3, CsCaF3 and BaLiF3 has been carried out by means of density functional theory. The calculated structural properties including elastic constants and equation of state agree well with available experimental information. The phonon dispersion curves are in good agreement with available experimental inelastic neutron scattering data. The electronic structures of these fluorides have been calculated using the quasi particle self-consistent [Formula: see text] approximation. The [Formula: see text] calculations reveal that all the fluorides studied are wide band gap insulators, and the band gaps are significantly larger than those obtained by the standard local density approximation, thus emphasizing the importance of quasi particle corrections in perovskite fluorides.

Abstract:This study reports the first-principles investigations of flouroperovskites, TlXF 3 (X = Ca, Cd), within the frame work of Density Functional Theory. A comprehensive and improved data of flouroperovskites on structural, phonon, elasto-mechanical, optoelectronic and thermoelectric properties are carried out using Perdew Burke Ernzerhof-Generalized Gradient Approximation (PBE-GGA), Trans-Blaha modified Becke-Johnson (TB-mBJ), meta GGA, Strongly Constrained and Appropriately Normed (SCAN), hybrid functional including Becke's three parameter exchange functional with the Lee-Yang-Parr (B3LYP) and range-separated hybrid functional Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE06). The structures are optimized and stability is proved by energy-volume optimization, formation energy calculations, positive phonon frequencies of phonon dispersion curves and elastic constant criteria. The electronic band structures of both TlCaF 3 and TlCdF 3 possess direct and indirect nature respectively and density of states are consistent with electronic band structure. The band gaps of TlCaF 3 are 4.53 eV (PBE-GGA), 6.19 eV (TB-mBJ), 4.89 eV (SCAN), 6.24 eV (B3LYP) and 5.98 eV (HSE06) and the band gaps of TlCdF 3 are 3.74 eV (PBE-GGA), 5.64 eV (TB-mBJ), 4.30 eV (SCAN), 5.83 eV (B3LYP) and 5.53 eV (HSE06). The dynamical stability and brittle response of TlCaF 3 and TlCdF 3 is confirmed from shear constant, Pugh's ratio and Poisson's ratio. The optical and thermoelectric response are studied for optoelectronic and sustainable applications.

Abstract:The intriguing phenomenon of glass-like heat-transfer behavior in rare-earth (RE) doped alkaline-earth fluoride (AEF) systems has captivated researchers' attention in fundamental science. The heat-transfer dynamics of AEF crystals exhibit transitions between crystalline-like and glass-like states as the species and concentration of doped RE ions are altered. Here, the applicability constraints of glassy thermal models in RE-AEF systems are elucidated by optimizing and adjusting parameters within the governing equations. Building upon insights derived from defective phonon-scattering calculations, the diverse factors that influence glass-like heat-transfer behavior in AEF crystals are comprehensively analyzed. The variation mechanism of the thermal conductivity models in RE-AEF crystals is subsequently simulated and explicated, employing an in-depth investigation into the parameters embedded within thermal equations. This endeavor ultimately establishes a solid theoretical foundation for the thermal investigation of disordered crystals.

Abstract:The discovery of ferroelectricity in the fluorite-structure HfO2 has attracted much interest in various applications including electro-optic devices and nonvolatile memories. Doping and alloying not only induce the ferroelectricity in HfO2, but also significantly impact the thermal conduction which plays an essential role in the heat dissipation and thermal stability of ferroelectric devices. To understand and regulate the heat transfer in ferroelectric HfO2, it is crucial to investigate the thermal conduction properties of related fluorite-structure ferroelectrics so as to establish the structure-property relation. In this work, using first-principles calculations, we investigate the thermal transport in twelve fluorite-structure ferroelectrics. We find an overall satisfactory agreement between the calculated thermal conductivities and those predicted by the simple theory of Slack. Among the family of fluorite-structure ferroelectrics, the transition-metal oxides HfO2 and ZrO2 have the highest thermal conductivities due to the strong interatomic bonding. We demonstrate that the spontaneous polarization, a feature specific to ferroelectrics, is positively correlated with the thermal conductivity, namely, the larger the spontaneous polarization, the larger the thermal conductivity. This is of chemical origin, namely both the spontaneous polarization and the thermal conductivity are positively correlated to the "ionicity" of the ferroelectrics. We further find that the thermal conductivity is several times lower in ferroelectric solid solution Hf1-xZrxO2 than its pure counterparts, especially in the thin films where the finite size effect further suppresses thermal conduction. Our findings suggest the spontaneous polarization as a specific criterion for identifying ferroelectrics with desired thermal conductivities, which may promote the designs and applications of ferroelectrics.

Abstract:The structural and transport features of the behavior of the fluorine ion sublattice of Pb 0.78 Sr 0.19 K 0.03 F 1.97 solid solution have been studied by the ab initio molecular dynamics method. It is shown that the local diffusion of fluorine anions changes with the nature of dopant atom, which is consistent with the experimental transport characteristics.

Abstract:It has generally been believed that the lattice thermal conductivity (κL) is mainly contributed by acoustic phonons and the contribution of optical phonons can be neglected in crystalline materials. However, in this work, we demonstrate that the contribution of optical phonons play an important role in the complex structural low- κL oxides. The mode-wised κL of three representative oxides, MgO, BaHfO3 and La2Zr2O7, with different structural complexity was calculated using first-principles phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) method. It is found that the contribution of optical phonons become significant as the structural complexity increases. Especially, for La2Zr2O7, the κL is dominated by optical phonons due to the large density of states. Optical phonons exhibit amorphous-like phonon-phonon scattering characteristics that are different from those of acoustic phonons. Furthermore, calculations for materials other than the three representative oxides were conducted and the results confirmed the validity of our conclusions.
Revisiting Lattice Thermal Conductivity of CsCl: the Crucial Role of Quartic Anharmonicity

Abstract:Thermal conductivity (κL) plays a critical role in thermal management applications. Usually, crystals with simpler structures exhibit higher κL due to fewer phonon scatterings. However, cesium chloride (CsCl) presents an anomaly, demonstrating an unexpectedly low κL of 1.0 W m−1 K−1 at 300 K, as observed in Professor Iversen's experimental measurement despite its simple structure. This prompts a need for understanding anomalous low κL and matching theory with experimental observations. Our study brings forth several findings for CsCl: (i) relying solely on three-phonon scattering inadequately captures κL. (ii) Anharmonic phonon renormalization significantly contributes to increased κL. (iii) Coherent phonons align temperature-dependent κL closely with the experiment. This work not only enhances understanding of anomalous κL in CsCl but also provides an approach to bridge the gap between experiment and theory in other crystals.

Abstract:Obtaining accurate lattice thermal conductivity data of LiF under extreme conditions not only provides important reference for performance evaluation, prediction, and control of materials, but also helps to alleviate the significant challenges of precise experimental measurements. The high-temperature phonon properties and lattice thermal conductivity (LTC) of solid LiF were calculated by combining on-the-fly machine learning force fields (MLFFs) with the Green–Kubo method. The introduction of MLFF successfully combines the accuracy of ab initio molecular dynamics with the scalability advantage of classical molecular dynamics. At high temperatures, there is a significant enhancement in the vibrational coupling between the acoustic and optical branches of LiF, as well as resonant effects between Li and F atoms, resulting in strong anharmonicity. Additionally, the main peak of the phonon density of states shows a noticeable redshift compared to the harmonic case. The enhanced coupling of TO and TA modes at high temperature leads to a significant increase in phonon scattering rate. By considering higher-order phonon anharmonicity, the predicted LTC is significantly reduced compared to the results obtained from considering only three-phonon interactions. Along the Hugoniot curve up to 100 GPa (2150 K), the predicted LTC agrees well with the experimental values. These findings demonstrate the crucial role of phonon anharmonicity in promoting phonon scattering.

Abstract:Fluoroaluminosilicate glass-ceramics with M1 - x RxF2 + x (M2+: Sr2+, Ba2+, R3+: rare earth ions) crystals are novel host materials for luminescence applications. However, the preparation of such materials is still a trial-error based approach due to the lack of detailed glass structure understanding. In this work, the authors study the phase separation and potential nanocrystal formation in a series of Ba2+ and La3+ containing fluoroaluminosilicate glasses by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Fluoride phase separation is observed from all simulated glass samples. With gradual LaF3 to BaF2 substitution, the cations enrichment changes from Ba2+, to Ba2+ and La3+, and finally La3+ in the fluoride-rich regions. Besides, the competition between Al3+ and La3+ in fluoride phase and the consequently redistribution of Al3+ and Na+ into oxide phase are observed, which can change the local environment of luminescent centers, affecting luminescence. An experimental support to this phenomenon is given. Therefore, MD simulation with effective potentials can be a practical method to study the structural origins of nanocrystal from fluoride phase separation as well as to study the structure-property relationship in fluoroaluminosilicate glass. The simulation driven glass structure and crystal phase exploration can thus become an effective method in designing glass-ceramics for luminescence and other applications.
Influence of lattice dynamics on lithium-ion conductivity: A first-principles study

Abstract:In the context of novel solid electrolytes for solid-state batteries, first-principles calculations are becoming increasingly more popular due to their ability to reproduce and predict accurately the energy, structural, and dynamical properties of fast-ion conductors. In order to accelerate the discovery of new superionic conductors is convenient to establish meaningful relations between ionic transport and simple materials descriptors. Recently, several experimental studies on lithium fast-ion conductors have suggested a correlation between lattice softness and enhanced ionic conductivity due to a concomitant decrease in the activation energy for ion migration, $E_{a}$. In this article, we employ extensive \emph{ab initio} molecular dynamics simulations based on density functional theory to substantiate the links between ionic transport and lattice dynamics in a number of structurally and chemically distinct lithium superionic conductors. Our first-principles results show no evidence for a direct and general correlation between $E_{a}$, or the hopping attempt frequency, and lattice softness. However, we find that, in agreement with recent observations, the pre-exponential factor of lithium diffusivity, $D_{0}$, follows the Meyer-Neldel rule $\propto \exp{\left(E_{a}/\langle \omega \rangle\right)}$, where $\langle \omega \rangle$ represents an average phonon frequency. Hence, lattice softness can be identified with enhanced lithium diffusivity but only within families of superionic materials presenting very similar migration activation energies, due to larger $D_{0}$. On the technical side, we show that neglection of temperature effects in first-principles estimation of $E_{a}$ may lead to huge inaccuracies of $\sim 10$\%. The limitations of zero-temperature harmonic approaches in modeling of lithium-ion conductors are also illustrated.

Abstract:Motivated by the resurgence of electronic and optical property design in ordered fluoride and oxyfluoride compounds, we present a density functional theory (DFT) study of 19 materials with structures, ranging from simple to complex, and variable oxygen-to-fluorine ratios. We focus on understanding the accuracy of the exchange-correlation potentials (Vxc) to DFT for the prediction of structural, electronic, and lattice dynamical properties at four different levels of theory, i.e., the local density approximation (LDA), generalized gradient approximation (GGA), metaGGA, and hybrid functional level which includes fractions of exact exchange. We investigate in detail the metaGGA functionals MS2 [Sun et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 106401 (2013)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.111.106401] and SCAN [Sun et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 115, 036402 (2015)PRLTAO0031-900710.1103/PhysRevLett.115.036402], and show that although the metaGGAs show improvements over the LDA and GGA functionals in describing the electronic structure and phonon frequencies, the static structural properties of fluorides and oxyfluorides are often more accurately predicted by the GGA-level Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof functional for solids, PBEsol. Results from LDA calculations are unsatisfactory for any compound, regardless of oxygen concentration. The PBEsol and Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof (HSE06) functionals give good performance in all-oxide or all-fluoride compounds. For the oxyfluorides, PBEsol is consistently more accurate for structural properties across all oxygen concentrations; however, we stress the need for detailed property assessment with various functionals for oxyfluorides with variable composition. The “best” functional is anticipated to be more strongly dependent on the property of interest. Our study provides useful insights in selecting an Vxc that achieves optimal performance compromises, enabling more accurate predictive design of functional fluoride-based materials with density functional theory.

Abstract:Pyrochlore-type (P-type) and fluorite-type (F-type) rare-earth A(2)B(2)O(7) -type oxides attract extensive interest in engineering applications in which ultralow thermal conductivity is strongly required for improving energy-utilization efficiency and thermal management. Herein, thermal transport properties of P-type and F-type A(2)B(2)O(7) (A = Y, La, Nd, Sm, Gd, Yb; B = Zr, Ce, Hf) was systematically investigated using molecular dynamics. The thermal conductivity of F-type structures was found to be 0.83 similar to@3.37 W.m(-1)K(-1), which is 30%similar to 50% of that of P-type structures. Such an low thermal conductivity is due to the stronger phonon scattering in F-type structures resulting from the inhomogeneous interatomic bonding. It was also found that the thermal conductivities of F-type A(2)B(2)O(7) being less dependent on temperature and closer to the theoretical minimum values due to the presence of amorphous-like phonon modes. Finally, we identified the optimal compositions in F-type A(2)B(2)O(7) family for achieving lowest thermal conductivity at high temperatures. This study suggests that enhancing the inhomogeneity of interatomic bonding can enable low thermal conductivity in simple-composition materials. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
