Abstract:To estimate the brain entropy (BEN) trajectories during aging and distinguish the age and cohort effects. All participants’ data included in this study were downloaded from the PREVENT-AD database. Global BEN and BENs in eight cerebral cortex network architectures were calculated from the rsfMRI data. We used generalized additive mixed models to estimate the trajectory of global BEN and the mean BENs of eight networks separately and distinguish the longitudinal and cohort effects. Global BEN of the cerebral cortex decreased in longitudinal trajectory of aging. There is a significant cohort effect that people who were born earlier showed higher BEN. The BENs in cerebral cortex network architectures decreased with aging. The decreasing speed of the BENs in primary (visual, auditory, somatomotor and language) networks and intermediate (dorsal and ventral attention) networks were faster than in the higher-order transmodal (control and default) networks, which led to a spatial BEN distribution shift during aging. The diversity of BEN in eight networks also increased with deepening of aging. BEN decrease continually in the aging process both globally and regionally. BEN dynamics features both the shift of the network complexity hierarchy and the increasing diversity of network complexity.
