Abstract:Non-commutative analysis tools have successfully been applied to the integer quantum Hall effect, in particular for a proof of the stability of the Hall conductance in an Anderson localization regime and of the bulk-boundary correspondence. In this work, these techniques are implemented to study two-dimensional dirty superconductors described by Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonians. After a thorough presentation of the basic framework and the topological invariants, Kubo formulas for the thermal, thermoelectric and spin Hall conductance are analyzed together with the corresponding edge currents.

Abstract:The decay of supercurrent in a 2-d superconductor through the homogenous quantum nucleation of vortex-antivortex pairs is formulated as a (2+1)-d scalar quantum electrodynamic problem. The calculation of the quantum decay rate can then be simplified to the usual single particle WKB calculation. We show explicitly that the homogeneous quantum nucleation of vortex-antivortex pairs is incompatible to the existence of the magnus force in the absence of dissipation, and point out more complicated nucleation processes needed to be studied by the vortex dynamics method in such case.

Abstract:Nonequilibrium Green's functions provide a powerful tool for computing the dynamical response and particle exchange statistics of coupled quantum systems. We formulate the theory in terms of the density matrix in Liouville space and introduce superoperator algebra that greatly simplifies the derivation and the physical interpretation of all quantities. Expressions for various observables are derived directly in real time in terms of superoperator nonequilibrium Green's functions (SNGF), rather than the artificial time-loop required in Schwinger's Hilbert-space formulation. Applications for computing interaction energies, charge densities, average currents, current induced fluorescence, electroluminescence and current fluctuation (electron counting) statistics are discussed.

Microscopic Theory of Vortex Dynamics in Homogeneous Superconductors

Abstract:Vortex dynamics in a type-II superconductor is systematically investigated by the influence functional method. The irrelevant fermionic degrees of freedom are integrated out and their effects on the dynamics are treated in terms of the vortex coordinate. When an isolated vortex is moving against its background, forces proportional to the first order of vortex velocity on the vortex are calculated within the present formulation. The total transverse force on the moving vortex is explicitly shown to be proportional to the superfluid number density and insensitive to impurities. Its equivalent expressions in terms of the Berry phase and the various summations of transitions between quasiparticle (hole) stares are discussed. At finite temperatures, due to the finite population of quasiparticle (hole) excitations above (below) the energy gap, there is a friction against vortex motion which diverges logarithmically in the low-frequency limit. Nonmagnetic impurities give rise to an additional friction from the core states which saturates to a value independent of the normal-state resistivity in the dirty limit. In this limit, the coupling to the electromagnetic field does not change the conclusions if charge neutrality in the superconductor is maintained. Macroscopic constraints on vortex dynamics by the second law of thermodynamics and by the fluctuation-dissipation theorems are also discussed. [S0163-1829(99)10129-2].
Superfluidity of "dirty" indirect excitons and magnetoexcitons in two-dimensional trap

Abstract:The superfluid phase transition of bosons in a two-dimensional (2D) system with disorder and an external parabolic potential is studied. The theory is applied to experiments on indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells. The random field is allowed to be large compared to the dipole-dipole repulsion between excitons. The slope of the external parabolic trap is assumed to change slowly enough to apply the local density approximation (LDA) for the superfluid density, which allows us to calculate the Kosterlitz-Thouless temperature $T_{c}(n(r))$ at each local point $r$ of the trap. The superfluid phase occurs around the center of the trap ($\mathbf{r}=0$) with the normal phase outside this area. As temperature increases, the superfluid area shrinks and disappears at temperature $T_{c}(n(r=0))$. Disorder acts to deplete the condensate; the minimal total number of excitons for which superfluidity exists increases with disorder at fixed temperature. If the disorder is large enough, it can destroy the superfluid entirely. The effect of magnetic field is also calculated for the case of indirect excitons. In a strong magnetic field $H$, the superfluid component decreases, primarily due to the change of the exciton effective mass.

Abstract:We study a Ginzburg–Landau equation of parabolic type in inhomogeneous superconductors. It is proved that the vortices are attracted by impurities so that they are pinned by inhomogeities in the superconducting materials. This fact was predicted recently by Chapman and Richardson using a method of formal matched asymptotics.

Abstract:Using the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov factorization of the density matrix and the Born–Oppenheimer approximation we show that the motion of a superconducting condensate satisfies a Schrödinger equation at zero temperature. The Galilean invariance of the equation is explicitly manifested. This equation gives a unified description of the condensate dynamics, such as Josephson effects, vortex dynamics and the Bogoliubov–Anderson mode.

Abstract:We review the recent progress in understanding the properties of spin-split superconductors under non-equilibrium conditions. Recent experiments and theories demonstrate a rich variety of transport phenomena occurring in devices based on such materials that suggest direct applications in thermoelectricity, low-dissipative spintronics, radiation detection and sensing. We discuss different experimental situations and present a theoretical framework based on quantum kinetic equations. Within this framework we provide an accurate description of the non-equilibrium distribution of charge, spin and energy, which are the relevant non-equilibrium modes, in different hybrid structures. We also review experiments on spin-split superconductors and show how transport measurements reveal the properties of the non-equilibrium modes and their mutual coupling. We discuss in detail spin injection and diffusion and very large thermoelectric effects in spin-split superconductors.

Abstract: The dynamics of moving vortex lattice is considered in the framework of the time dependent Ginzburg - Landau equation neglecting effects of pinning. At high flux velocities the pinning dominated dynamics is expected to cross over into the interactions dominated dynamics for very clean materials recently studied experimentally. The stationary lattice structure and orientation depend on the flux flow velocity. The vortex lattice will have a different orientation for V>V_c. The two orientations can be desribed as motion "in channels" and motion of "lines of vortices perpendicular to the direction of motion. Although we start from the lowest Landau level approximation, corrections to conductivity and the vortex lattice energy dissipation from higher Landau levels are systematically calculated and compared to a recent experiment.

Abstract:Using a time-dependent two-component Ginzburg-Landau theory, we have studied the flow resistivity of vortices in the time-reversal-symmetry-breaking (T-breaking) phases of unconventional superconductors. The free vortex flow resistivity is found to be generally nonlinear against the magnetic field. The relevance of these results in explaining a recent experiment by Wu et al. is addressed. Abstract:We modify a nonlinear sigma model (NLSM) for the description of a granulated disordered system in the presence of both the Coulomb repulsion and the Cooper pairing. We show that under certain controlled approximations this model is reduced to the Bose-Hubbard (or ``dirty-boson'') model with renormalized coupling constants. We obtain a more general effective action (which is still simpler than the full NLSM action) which can be applied in the region of parameters where the reduction to the Bose-Hubbard model is not justified. This action may lead to a different picture of the superconductor-insulator transition in 2D systems.
Stability of fractional vortex states in a two-band mesoscopic superconductor

Abstract:We investigate the stability of noncomposite fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconductor within the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model. Our analysis explicitly takes into account the relationship between the model parameters and microscopic material parameters, such as partial density of states, fermi velocities and elements of the electron-phonon coupling matrix. We have found that states with different phase winding number in each band (L1 not equal to L2) and fractional flux can exist in many different configurations, including rather unconventional ones where the dominating band carries larger winding number and states where |L1-L2| > 1. We present a detailed analysis of the stability of the observed vortex structures with respect to changing the microscopic parameters, showing that, in the weak coupling case, fractional vortex states can be assessed in essentially the whole range of temperatures and applied magnetic fields in which both bands are active. Finally, we propose an efficient way of increasing the range of parameters for which these fractional vortex states can be stabilized. In particular, our proposal allows for observation of fractional vortex structures in materials with stronger coupling, where those states are forbidden at a homogeneous field. This is accomplished with the help of the stray fields of a suitably prepared magnetic dot placed nearby the superconducting disk.

Abstract:The interplay between electron-electron interactions and weak localization (or anti-localization) phenomena in two-dimensional systems can significantly enhance the superconducting transition temperature. We develop the theory of quantum fluctuations within such multifractally-enhanced superconducting states in thin films. In conditions of weak disorder, we employ the Finkel'stein nonlinear sigma model to derive an effective action for the superconducting order parameter and the quasiclassical Green's function, meticulously accounting for the influence of quantum fluctuations. This effective action, applicable for interactions of any strength, reveals the critical role of well-known collective modes in a dirty superconductor, and its saddle point analysis leads to modified Usadel and gap equations. These equations comprehensively incorporate the renormalizations stemming from the interplay between interactions and disorder, resulting in the non-trivial energy dependence of the gap function. Notably, our analysis establishes a direct relation between the self-consistent gap equation at the superconducting transition temperature and the known renormalization group equations for interaction parameters in the normal state.

Superconductive proximity effect in interacting disordered conductors

Abstract:We present a general theory of the superconductive proximity effect in disordered normal--superconducting (N-S) structures, based on the recently developed Keldysh action approach. In the case of the absence of interaction in the normal conductor we reproduce known results for the Andreev conductance G_A at arbitrary relation between the interface resistance R_T and the diffusive resistance R_D. In two-dimensional N-S systems, electron-electron interaction in the Cooper channel of normal conductor is shown to strongly affect the value of G_A as well as its dependence on temperature, voltage and magnetic field. In particular, an unusual maximum of G_A as a function of temperature and/or magnetic field is predicted for some range of parameters R_D and R_T. The Keldysh action approach makes it possible to calculate the full statistics of charge transfer in such structures. As an application of this method, we calculate the noise power of an N-S contact as a function of voltage, temperature, magnetic field and frequency for arbitrary Cooper repulsion in the normal metal and arbitrary values of the ratio R_D/R_T.

Abstract:We present a two dimensional model of superconductivity where bosonization of fermions is described by topological fermion-boson duality. The model solves the discrepancy between theoretical and empirical values of penetration depth and explains the appearence of quantized vortex lines in supercunductors in accord with cyclotron motion of supercunducting electrons.

Abstract:The proximity effect in multilayer structures with dirty two band superconductors and ferromagnets is investigated here. With a homogeneous exchange field and interband scattering in the ferromagnetic layer, the condensate functions that penetrate the ferromagnet are coupled up. This coupling effect is intensively suppressed by the exchange field and modulated by the diffusion coefficients of the two bands. Such coupling also affects the superconductor where the condensate functions of the two bands are also coupled up through the proximity effect. An inhomogeneous exchange field raises the damped oscillation of the condensate functions as the spatial distance from the interface increases. There is a 0-pi phase shift when the ferromagnetic layer thickness varies beyond the ferromagnetic coherence length.

Abstract:A two-dimensional electron system with both spin and orbital degrees of freedom is investigated with the slave-boson mean-field approaches. By introducing the resonating-valence-bond order parameters, we show that the system may exhibit superconductivity after the slave bosons "condensation." It is found that the electron pairs are spin singlets and orbital singlets but the system shows p-wave superconductivity with the symmetry of k(x)+/-ik(y).

Abstract:We develop an optimized perturbation theory for the Ginzburg-Landau description of thermal fluctuations effects in the vortex liquids. Unlike the high temperature expansion which is asymptotic, the optimized expansion is convergent. Radius of convergence on the lowest Landau level is a(T)= -3 in two dimensions (2D) and a(r)= -5 in three dimensions (3D). It allows a systematic calculation of magnetization and specific heat contributions due to thermal fluctuations of vortices in strongly type-II superconductors to a very high precision. The results are in good agreement with existing Monte Carlo simulations and experiments. Limitations of various nonperturbative and phenomenological approaches are noted. In particular we show that there is no exact intersection point of the magnetization curves both in 2D and 3D.
