Abstract:The determination by Chinese scientists in early 1970s of the crystal structure of rhombohedral 2Zn pig insulin, the first protein crystal structure ever to be solved in Asia, marked the historical beginning of the structural biology research in China. Starting with the new century, research in structural biology in China experiences a rapid progress and facing a new development stage, placing her at the frontier of this field worldwide. This Special Column will conduct a panoramic review of the history and current status of structural biology research in China in three Sections, "The history", "The establishment of modern experimental facilities", and "The representative research fruits in recent years at the international frontier of life sciences".

Abstract:The last decades have seen major advances in the research, design and construction of steel space structures (space grid structures) in China. This paper provides a review of these developments, with particular attention to the new technologies and new structural forms employed in China. The following topics on new technologies and new structures are given emphasis: long-span and large-area grid structures; composite space trusses; composite reticulated shells; triple-layer space trusses; partial double-layer (single-layer) lattice shells; prestressed grid structures; cable-stayed grid structures; special grid structures; new types of joints; theoretical work and application research. Prospects for steel space structures in the 21st century are presented at the end of this paper.

Abstract:From November 6 to 9, 2007, more than 500 scientists from 20 countries and regions gathered in Shanghai, China, to attend the 2007 Shanghai International Symposium on Stem Cell Research. This dynamic meeting was jointly organized by the International Society for Stem Cell Research (ISSCR), the Shanghai Institutes for Biological Sciences, Chinese Academy of Sciences (SIBS/CAS), and other institutes in China. For the first time, the ISSCR added its name to a conference other than its own annual meeting, embracing this opportunity to learn more about research that is happening in China and providing a platform for local researchers who do not always have the opportunity to travel internationally to the ISSCR annual meetings. Here we present a sampling of the diverse research presented by the local and international participants during the science-packed 4 day meeting.

Trends in Biochemical Sciences

Abstract:As Cell, and more broadly Cell Press, celebrate their 50th anniversary, Trends in Biochemical Sciences is excited to promote this structurally motivated TrendsTalk and review articles alongside related content from Cell and other journals across the Cell Press family. Advances in structural biology enable scientists to obtain structural information at different levels of resolution and complexity and to capture dynamics and interactions of macromolecules. However, these advances also result in new challenges and questions for defining and sharing results. Some of the authors from review articles of this February issue of TIBS consider the following questions: how reliable and accurate are structures obtained by these techniques? How do they account for the diversity and variability of macromolecular structures in different contexts or states? How do they represent uncertainty inherent in the data or models? How can the results be communicated and integrated with data from other disciplines to give more comprehensive understandings of macromolecular structure and function? What tools are necessary for the structural biology community to compare and/or integrate data and to visualize, annotate, and share models and information?

Abstract:Chinese government funding of R&D ranks third in the world. Yet China ranks only 17th in terms of scientific productivity per unit of investment. The author recently conducted fieldwork on the team structure of 22 Chinese stem cell research groups. Interview data suggest that although Chinese research groups closely resemble their international counterparts in many respects, there are also significant differences which are perceived by interviewees to affect levels of scientific productivity. One characteristic of Chinese research teams is a common deficiency in middle-layer positions. This shortage of experienced professionals is perceived by scientists participating in this study to have led to two consequences. First, inexperienced student researchers often form the backbone of scientific teams in China, which leads to frequent interruptions of research and extended laboratory training. Second, research teams consist of a relatively small number of personnel. These structural features are seen to create excessive social boundaries, which impede the exchange of information and further worsens the segmentation of resources. This article engages the question of the extent to which interviewees’ local ‘embedded’ understandings of these difficulties may make a productive contribution to the analysis of the structural, and infra-structural, organization of Chinese professional bioscience teams.

Abstract:Developmental biology research in China started from experimental embryology, in particular from studies on aquatic and reptile animals. The recent growth of the developmental biology community in China parallels the increased governmental funding support and the recruitment of overseas talents. This flourishing field in China embraces the activities of developmental biology-related societies, national meetings, key research initiatives and talented scientists. The first Development paper from China, published in 2000, marked the beginning of a new era. More recently, the second decade in the 21st century witnessed the blossoming of developmental biology research in China. Abstract:Organism development is a systems level process. It has benefited greatly from the recent technological advances in the field of systems biology. DNA microarray, phenome, interactome and transcriptome mapping, the new generation of deep sequencing technologies, and faster and better computational and modeling approaches have opened new frontiers for both systems biologists and developmental biologists to reexamine the old developmental biology questions, such as pattern formation, and to tackle new problems, such as stem cell reprogramming. As showcased in the International Developmental Systems Biology Symposium organized by Chinese Academy of Sciences, developmental systems biology is flourishing in many perspectives, from the evolution of developmental systems, to the underlying genetic and molecular pathways and networks, to the genomic, epigenomic and noncoding levels, to the computational analysis and modeling. We believe that the field will continue to reap rewards into the future with these new approaches.

With the construction of an arm of the Chinese National Protein Science Facility at Tsinghua University, biological cryo-EM has entered a phase of rapid development in China.
