Abstract:As the variability of the intensity of the tropical easterly jet (TEJ) has been extensively studied, how the location of the TEJ’s core changes is still less understood. We found that the TEJ can be identified as three locational patterns by using the cluster analysis, which exhibit an east mode (centering over the southern tip of the Indian Peninsula), a northwest mode (centering to the southeast of Arabian Peninsula), and a southwest mode (centering over the tropical western Indian Ocean). The frequency of each locational pattern is distinctly different in each summer month and change obviously from year to year. The change in the location of the TEJ’s core have an important impact on the monsoon rainfall in South Asia, Southeast Asia, and East Asia through modulating the large-scale divergence at the upper level and the vertical-meridional circulation. The decreased frequency of the northwest mode may be responsible for the drying along the Himalayas while the more frequent southwest mode may contribute to the aridification in the northern India. The results highlight the diversity of the TEJ location and can provide a different perspective in understanding the cause of the monsoon rainfall variation.
