Abstract:Triplet energy transfer between organic dyes and lanthanide-doped luminescent nanoparticles (LnLNPs) energetically bridges organic dyes and inorganic LnLNPs, which can combine superiority and overcome limitations associated with the optical properties of organic dyes and LnLNPs. As a result, the triplet energy transfer can enable the unprecedented performance of organic dyes and LnLNPs in the harvest and conversion of photonic energy. In this review, we first introduce some fundamentals of triplet energy transfer. Probing methods and manipulation strategies for triplet energy transfer between organic dyes and LnLNPs are then surveyed, and recent research directions and corresponding achievements are reviewed. Finally, some challenges and perspectives for pursuing robust, flexible, and efficient triplet energy transfer between organic dyes and LnLNPs are discussed.

Abstract:All‐organic visible‐light photochromism is reported here via a novel strategy with narrow singlet–triplet energy gap (ΔEST) materials as a sensitizer. Taking advantage of the narrow ΔEST feature and the triplet–triplet energy transfer process, highly efficient photochromism of diarylethenes (DAEs) with both ring‐open and ring‐closure excitations shifted to visible light region is successfully achieved. Moreover, the wavelength of the visible excitation light can be easily modulated (e.g., from 405 to 470 nm) by elaborate selection of matched sensitized molecules. The “write‐and‐erase” application of this photochromic system in polymer films is further demonstrated. This strategy provides a simple and versatile selection of well‐matched DAE/sensitizer couples for visible‐light photochromism without complicated molecular design.

Abstract:All-visible light-activated diarylethene (DAE) photoswitches are highly attractive for applications in smart photoresponsive materials. Photocyclization of DAE via the low-lying excited triplet state through triplet energy transfer (TET) from a sensitizer has been proven as an effective approach for the realization of this scheme. However, TET process is sensitive to oxygen and typically requires more than one sensitizer per photoswitch to facilitate sensitized photocyclization. Herein, we present a bi-component system comprising carboxylic acid-functionalized DAEs and CdS quantum dots (QDs) to achieve all-visible light-activated photoswithing. Due to the large surface area-to-volume ratio of CdS QDs and surface anchored DAEs, one CdS QD can activate at least 18 DAE molecules in the solution without oxygen exclusion. The efficiency of photocyclization of DAEs under visible light irradiation through energy transfer from CdS QDs is nearly comparable to direct UV light irradiation. Moreover, our strategy is adaptable to solid-state performance exposed in the air, enabling reversible writing and erasing of color and patterns by adjusting irradiation wavelengths in the visible region.

Abstract:Current development of light-responsive materials and technologies imposes an urgent demand on visible-light photoswitching on account of its mild excitation with high penetration ability and low photo-toxicity. However, complicated molecular design and laborious synthesis are often required for visible-light photoswitch, especially for diarylethenes. Worse still, a dilemma is encountered as the visible-light excitation of the diarylethene is often achieved at the expense of photochromic performances. To tackle these setbacks, we introduce a building-block design strategy to achieve all-visible-light photochromism with the triplet-sensitization mechanism. The simply designed diarylethene system is constructed by employing a sensitizer building-block with narrow singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔEST) to a diarylethene building-block. A significant improvement on the photochromic efficiency is obtained as well as an enhanced photo-fatigue resistance over those under UV irradiation. The balance between the visible-light excitation and decent photochromism is thus realized, promoting a guiding principle for the visible-light photochromism.

Abstract:Triplet energy transfer occurs frequently in natural photosynthetic organisms to protect against photo-oxidative stress. For artificial light-harvesting systems, several challenges need to be addressed to realize triplet energy transfer especially in aqueous medium. Specifically, the phosphors should be shielded from water and molecular oxygen, which facilitate to maintain intense emission intensity. Moreover, the donor‒acceptor phosphors should be organized in close proximity, yet simultaneously avoiding direct homo- and hetero-interactions to minimize the potential energy losses. Herein an effective strategy has been developed to meet these requirements, by employing a rod−coil amphiphile as the compartmentalized agent. It renders synergistic rigidifying and hydrophobic shielding effects, giving rise to enhanced phosphorescent emission of the platinum(II) complexes in aqueous environment. More importantly, the donor‒acceptor platinum(II) phosphors feature ordered spatial organization in the ternary co-assembled system, resulting in high light-harvesting efficiency. Therefore, the compartmentalization strategy represents an efficient approach toward color-tunable phosphorescent nanomaterials.
Synergism of Light-Induced [4 + 4] Cycloaddition and Electron Transfer Toward Switchable Photoluminescence and Single-Molecule Magnet Behavior in a Dy4 Cubane

Abstract:Molecular materials possessing switchable magneto-optical properties are of great interest due to their potential applications in spintronics and molecular devices. However, switching their photoluminescence (PL) and single-molecule magnet (SMM) behavior via light-induced structural changes still constitutes a formidable challenge. Here, a series of cubane structures were synthesized via self-assembly of 9-anthracene carboxylic acid (HAC) and rare-earth ions. All complexes exhibited obvious photochromic phenomena and complete PL quenching upon Xe lamp irradiation, which were realized via the synergistic effect of photogenerated radicals and [4 + 4] photocycloaddition of the AC components. The quenched PL showed the largest fluorescence intensity change (99.72%) in electron-transfer photochromic materials. A reversible decoloration process was realized via mechanical grinding, which is unexpectedly in the electron-transfer photochromic materials. Importantly, an SMM behavior of the Dy analog was observed after room-temperature irradiation due to the photocycloaddition of AC ligands and the photogenerated stable radicals changed the electrostatic ligand field and magnetic coupling. Moreover, based on the remarkably photochromic and photoluminescent properties of these compounds, 2 demos were applied to support their application in information anti-counterfeiting and inkless printing. This work, for the first time utilizing the simultaneous modulation of photocycloaddition and photogenerated radicals in one system, realizes complete PL quenching and light-induced SMM behavior, providing a dynamical switch for the construction of multifunctional polymorphic materials with optical response and optical storage devices.

Abstract:Although organic light-emitting molecules have received a growing attention and applicability in modern bioimaging science, the design and control of complex photoluminescent properties in unimolecularly selective imaging remains a challenging topic. Considering that tunable multipathway imaging can be advantagedly connected with treatment processes in therapy, the integration of an azulene and a cyanostyryl moiety into one skeleton is carried out for the generation of in situ stimuli-responsive luminescent materials, with the aim to achieve tunable and effective emissions in distinct channels through smart molecular design on a single-molecular platform. This strategy takes advantage of 1) the Z/E isomerization of the cyanostyryl unit that can vary the push-pull effect of the substitution on azulene, accompanied by altering absorption and emission of individual excited states, and 2) an optimized excited-state regulation for opening a near infrared emissive channel and making up for a controllable dual-pathway luminescent system together with the utilization of visible emission. As exemplified by a demonstration of manipulating the luminescence at the cell level, the materials exhibit a superior application potential for unimolecularly selective imaging, labeling and probing events.
Involving Synergy of Green Light and Acidic Responses in Control of Unimolecular Multicolor Luminescence

Abstract:Conversion of multicolor luminescence is one of desirable goals in study and development of next-generation molecular emitters, whereas involving visible light into the control of the above-mentioned ability has been poorly addressed due to the need of a relatively complicate molecular design. In this work, we present a novel dyad with a linkage of 4-piperazinyl-1,8-naphthalimide and cyanostyryl-modified azulene moiety, upon which the luminescence signal can be orthogonally controlled by protonation and green light irradiation. The superior features of the protonation induced excited state energy alteration, followed by green light driven photoisomerization led to a progressive luminescent color conversion among blue, yellow and green at the single molecular level. This strategy may bring in novel insights for preparing advanced function-integrated optoelectronic materials.

Abstract:Photochromic compounds have attracted much attention for their potential applications in photo-actuators, optoelectronic devices and optical recording techniques. This interest is driven by their key photochemical and photophysical properties, which can be reversibly modulated by light irradiation. Among them, diarylethene compounds have garnered extensive investigation due to their excellent thermal stability of both open- and closed-form isomers, robust fatigue resistance, high photocyclization quantum yield and good photochromic performance in both solution and solid phases. However, a notable limitation in expanding the utility of diarylethene compounds is the necessity for ultraviolet light to induce their photochromism. This requirement poses challenges, as ultraviolet light can be detrimental to biological tissues, and its penetration is often restricted in various media. This review provides an overview of design strategies employed in the development of visible-light-responsive diarylethene compounds. These design strategies serve as a guideline for molecular design, with the potential to significantly broaden the applications of all-visible-light-activated diarylethene compounds in the realms of materials science and biomedical science.

Abstract:A photo‐switched supramolecular luminescent assembly is constructed, showing both aggregation‐induced emission and photo/chemical dual responsive properties. Such orthogonal stimulations allow for photo‐induced fluorescence on/off and locking/unlocking information by base/acid treatment, with apparent fluorescent self‐feedback. This study realizes the rarely reported but very important locking/unlocking information of photo‐controlled fluorescence and self‐feedback functions, providing a promising step for multifunctional intelligent supramolecular luminescent devices. The development of multifunctional photo‐controlled luminescent switch, which provides versatile tools for smart systems and advanced organic luminescent materials, is of paramount significance. Herein, a photoswitchable supramolecular assembly is constructed from the noncovalent interaction of cyanostilbene‐bridged bis(dibenzo‐24‐crown‐8) with a diarylethene derivative. Possessing the reversible photoisomerization property and a high Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency, the resultant supramolecular assembly can reversibly switch on/off the luminescence of the cyanostilbene group upon irradiation by different wavelength light and the addition of acid/base both in solution and in the solid state. Significantly, the characters written with the supramolecular assembly as ink can be reversibly and repeatedly erased and recovered by altering the wavelength of irradiation light.

Abstract:Developing new all‐visible‐light driven fluorescent molecular switches has attracted great interests in materials science and life science. Herein, three novel all‐visible‐light triggered fluorescent molecular photoswitches (2P3, 4F, and 4Cl) have been designed by prolonging π‐conjugation length with triphenylethylene units. More interestingly, two distinct conformations with different photochromic and fluorescent abilities can be altered by solvents polarity. Developing new all‐visible‐light driven fluorescent molecular switches has attracted much interests due to their important application prospects in materials science and life science. Herein, three novel all‐visible‐light triggered fluorescent molecular photoswitches (2P3, 4F, and 4Cl) are designed and prepared, which are realized by prolonging π‐conjugation length with aggregated‐induced emission units. These photoswitches show reversible photochromic and fluorescent switching in dilute solutions and films under 420 nm and 560 nm irradiations. Meanwhile, upon alternating irradiations with 450 nm/560 nm light, effective photochromic and fluorescent switching in powder states are also achieved. More interestingly, two distinct conformations with different photochromic abilities can be altered by solvents polarity. The size difference of the two conformations is over 5 Å in the vertical direction which is one of the largest changes among photochromic molecules based on dithienylethene. The accompanying conformational changes are analysed to understand the relationship between solvent characteristics and crystal structure, as well as the intermolecular interaction in solid state for all‐visible‐light triggered photoswitching molecules.

A Supramolecular Artificial Light‐Harvesting System with Two‐Step Sequential Energy Transfer for Photochemical Catalysis

Abstract:AbstractAn artificial light‐harvesting system with sequential energy‐transfer process was fabricated based on a supramolecular strategy. Self‐assembled from the host–guest complex formed by water‐soluble pillar[5]arene (WP5), a bola‐type tetraphenylethylene‐functionalized dialkyl ammonium derivative (TPEDA), and two fluorescent dyes, Eosin Y (ESY) and Nile Red (NiR), the supramolecular vesicles achieve efficient energy transfer from the AIE guest TPEDA to ESY. ESY can function as a relay to further transfer the energy to the second acceptor NiR and realize a two‐step sequential energy‐transfer process with good efficiency. By tuning the donor/acceptor ratio, bright white light emission can be successfully achieved with a CIE coordinate of (0.33, 0.33). To better mimic natural photosynthesis and make full use of the harvested energy, the WP5⊃TPEDA‐ESY‐NiR system can be utilized as a nanoreactor: photocatalyzed dehalogenation of α‐bromoacetophenone was realized with 96 % yield in aqueous medium.
An ultrawide-range photochromic molecular fluorescence emitter

Abstract:Photocontrollable luminescent molecular switches capable of changing emitting color have been regarded as the ideal integration between intelligent and luminescent materials. A remaining challenge is to combine good luminescence properties with wide range of wavelength transformation, especially when confined in a single molecular system that forms well-defined nanostructures. Here, we report a π-expanded photochromic molecular photoswitch, which allows for the comprehensive achievements including wide emission wavelength variation (240 nm wide, 400–640 nm), high photoisomerization extent (95%), and pure emission color (<100 nm of full width at half maximum). We take the advantageous mechanism of modulating self-assembly and intramolecular charge transfer in the synthesis and construction, and further realize the full color emission by simple photocontrol. Based on this, both photoactivated anti-counterfeiting function and self-erasing photowriting films are achieved of fluorescence. This work will provide insight into the design of intelligent optical materials.

Abstract:<p>Over decades of development, functions of photochromic compounds have no longer been as simple as meeting color change demand. Upon photoisomerization, physical and chemical properties can be modulated, leading to exponential growth of related publications. Among a great quantity of publications, photochromic metal complexes are dazzling candidates as for the convenience of achieving all-visible light photochromism. Two photophysical energy transfer processes, from metal to two isomers of photochrome core, make main contribution to metal-sensitized photochromism and luminescence quenching, respectively. Upon light irradiation, photochromic metal complex can be switched between two isomers together with energy manipulation, including energy transfer switching and energy level modulation. Herein, our review focus on the latest six-years development about energy manipulation and metal-assisted photochromism, which mainly refers to metal-sensitized visible light photochromism, in azobenzene/stilbene, spiropyran/spirooxazine and diarylethene metal complexes. Some other issues will also be discussed, such as negative effects of energy/electronic communication on photochromic performance, several applications in bio-sensor/metallogelation/nonlinear optical (NLO) material/rewritable system.</p>

Abstract:Controllable aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIEgens) by photoexcitation can be conducted within a single solvent, thus opening new opportunities for preparing and processing smart materials. However, undesired side-reactions like photooxidation that can easily occur in the organic phase remain, limiting their applications. To enhance the operability of photoexcitation-controlled AIEgens (to specifically produce a phosphorescence characteristic) in the organic phase, in this work, we employ a typical prototype, hexathiobenzene, usually as the specific phosphorescent group, and investigate a series of physical and chemical factors, such as light intensity, dissolved oxygen content, and solvent polarity, to explore ways to control the photoexcitation-controllable AIEgens against the impurities from side-reactions. An organogel strategy was also developed to minimize interference factors and improve the practical application ability. We believe that the presented results provide new insights into the further development of the photoexcitation-based functional materials and the promotion of their practical usage.

Abstract:Gated photochromism is of interest for the operation and control of modern high-tech optofunctional materials. For further advancing this topic towards the achievement of multifunctional molecular switching, however, it remains a great challenge to incorporate multiple fluorescence regulation into gated photochromism in one unimolecular system. Herein, it is reported that a dithienylethene derivative DTEN with a Schiff base connection can be facilely synthesized by one-step coupling, and it enabled distinct color and spectral changes upon different stimuli, including ultraviolet, visible light, Ni2+, and Al3+. Relying on hydrazine and hydroxy units in this molecule, compound DTEN exhibited novel Ni2+-locked photochromic characteristics originating from complexation of the compound with Ni2+ in a 2:1 stoichiometry. On the other hand, a 1:1 complexation between compound DTEN and Al3+ could allow both of the initial and photostationary states of DTEN to display fluorescent enhancement and a redshift, realizing a dual-fluorescence "turn-on" sensing of Al3+ by light. On this basis, it is argued that the switching of the coordination mode between DTEN and Ni2+ or Al3+ brings up the possibility of tunable photoswitching by multiple stimuli, which offers a novel way for future development of multifunctional switching materials with different input and output signals, as exemplified by the construction of a delicate molecular circuit.
