Abstract:Highly efficient and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts in the same medium are indispensable for overall water splitting. Herein, Fe-doped Ni–Co phosphide nanoplates with a hierarchical nanostructure were successfully fabricated on a carbon cloth (Fex-NiCoP) via a facile method with electrodesposition and PH3 plasma treatment. Benefiting from the hierarchical structure, two-dimensional nanoplates comprising fine nanocrystals and doping effects of Fe, the Fex-NiCoP demonstrates excellent electrocatalytic performance for both the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER), which is sensitive to the Fe content. By controlling the Fe content, Fe1-NiCoP achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low overpotential of 60 mV for the HER, while Fe2-NiCoP with a higher Fe doping content drives 50 mA cm–2 at only 293 mV for the OER. Upon high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, some planar defects were observed in the Fe-doped NiCoP nanocrystals, which may account for the increased exposure of active sites. When the optimal Fex-NiCoP electrodes were employed as the anode and cathode for water electrolysis in the alkaline electrolyte, the electrolyzer achieves 10 mA cm–2 at a low cell voltage of 1.61 V. Our work might shed light on rational design of the efficient multimetallic phosphide bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:The catalyst innovation that aims at noble-metal-free substitutes is one key aspect for future sustainable hydrogen energy deployment.In this paper,a nickel cobalt sulfoselenide/black phosphorus heterostructure(NiCoSe|S/BP)was fabricated to realize the highly active and durable water electrolysis through interface and valence dual-engineering.The NiCoSe|S/BP nanostructure was constructed by in-situ growing NiCo hydroxide nanosheet arrays on few-layer BP and subsequently one-step sulfoselenization by SeS2.Besides the conductive merit of BP substrate,holes in p-type BP are capable of oxidizing the Co2+to high-valence and electron-accepting Co3+,benefiting the oxygen evolution reaction(OER).Meanwhile,Ni3+/Ni2+ratio in the heterostructure is reduced to maintain the electrical neutrality,which corresponds to the increased electron-donating character for boosting hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).As for HER and OER,the heterostructured NiCoSe|S/BP electrocatalyst exhibits small overpotentials of 172 and 285 mV at 10 mA cm-2(η10)in alkaline media,respectively.And overall water splitting has been achieved at a low cell potential of 1.67 V atη10 with high stability.Molecular sensing and density functional theory(DFT)calculations are further proposed for understanding the rate-determine steps and enhanced catalytic mechanism.The investigation presents a deep-seated perception for the electrocatalytic performance enhancement of BP-based heterostructure.
In situ construction of surface defects of carbon-doped ternary cobalt-nickel-iron phosphide nanocubes for efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:The ternary cobalt-nickel-iron phosphide nanocubes (P-Co0.9Ni0.9Fe1.2 NCs) with high intrinsic activity, conductivity, defect concentration and optimized ratio have been realized through a facile phosphorization treatment using ternary cobalt-nickel-iron nanocubes of Prussian blue analogs (PBA) as a precursor. The scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy results show that the P-Co0.9Ni0.9Fe1.2 NCs maintain a cubic structure with a rough surface, implying the rich surface defects as exposed active sites. The thermal phosphorization of the ternary PBA precursor not only provids carbon doping but also leads to the in situ construction of surface defects on the NCs. The carbon doping from the PBA precursor lowers the charge transfer resistance and optimizes the electronic transformation. The synergistic effect among the ternary metal ions and rich defects contributes to the enhanced electrocatalytic performance. The P-Co0.9Ni0.9Fe1.2 NCs achieve low overpotentials of −200.7 and 273.1 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm−2 for the hydrogen evolution reaction and the oxygen evolution reaction, respectively. The potential of overall water splitting reaches 1.52 V at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. The long-term stability of the electrocatalysts was also evaluated. This work provides a facile method to design efficient transition-metal-based bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:A novel free-standing electrode consisting of nickel phosphide (Ni2P) nanoparticles on nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped porous carbon (NPC) are synthesized on carbon cloth (CC). Polyaniline (PANI) and nickel (Ni) are sequentially electro-deposited on the surface of CC, which are then transformed into NPC and Ni2P by an in-situ carbonization-phosphorization combined process. The electrode surface is distributed with large amounts of uniform macropores, which could expose more active sites and enhance the interfacial exchange with the electrolyte. The Ni2P@NPC@CC electrode delivers early overpotentials of 92 and 280 mV vs. Reversible Hydrogen Electrode (RHE) at 10 mA cm-2 for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline condition, respectively. The electrolytic cell with Ni2P@NPC@CC electrode both as anode and cathode can achieve 10 mA cm-2 at a small bias of 1.54 V for the overall water splitting. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that combination with Ni2P and NPC can decrease Gibbs free energy for H* adsorption (ΔGH*) and increase charge density on the interface, thus could lead to the enhanced activity for water splitting. The free-standing and noble-metal free Ni2P@NPC@CC electrode is stable, highly active and cost effective, thus have great potential for the hydrogen production.

Abstract:Developing high active and stable cost-effective bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting to produce hydrogen is of vital significance in clean and sustainable energy development. This work has prepared a novel porous unreported MOF (Ni-DPT) as a precursor to successfully synthesize a non-noble bifunctional NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF electrocatalyst through doping strategy and interface engineering. This catalyst is constructed by layered self-supporting arrays with heterojunction interface and rich nitrogen-phosphorus doping. Structural characterizations and the density function theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the interface effect of NiCoP/Ni12P5 heterojunction can regulate the electronic structure of the catalyst to optimize the Gibbs free energy of hydrogen (ΔGH*); simultaneously, the defect-rich layered nanoarrays can expose more active sites, shorten mass transfer distance, and generate a self-supporting structure for in-situ reinforcing the structural stability. As a result, this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF catalyst exhibits favorable electrocatalytic performance, which simply needs overpotentials of 100 mV for HER and 310 mV for OER, respectively, at a current density of 10 mA·cm-2. The anion exchange membrane electrolyzer assembled with this NiCoP/Ni12P5@NF as both anode and cathode catalysts can operate stably for 200 h at a current density of 100 mA·cm-2 with an insignificant voltage decrease. This work may provide some inspiration for the further rational design of inexpensive non-noble multifunctional electrocatalysts and electrode materials for water splitting to generate hydrogen.

Abstract:Water electrocatalytic splitting to produce hydrogen is regarded as an efficient and promising strategy but limited to the large overpotential; thus, a highly efficient electrocatalyst is urgently needed. Mixed metal doping is an important strategy in defect engineering, because the heteroatoms can change the intrinsic structure to form defects through affecting atomic coordination mode and adjusting the electronic structure, which is often accompanied by the morphology changes. Herein, two-dimensional layered bimetallic Co-pydc containing axial coordinated water molecules was selected through making surface defects by Fe doping in the metal centers as bifunctional electrocatalysts for OER and HER. The optimized Co0.59Fe0.41-pydc possesses outstanding OER performance with the lowest overpotentials of 262 mV to reach j = 10 mA cm−2, and Co0.75Fe0.25-pydc possesses superior HER performance with the lowest overpotentials of 96 mV at j =10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the overall water splitting device assemble by Co0.59Fe0.41-pydc@NF//Co0.59Fe0.41-pydc@NF affords a current density of 10 mA cm−2 only at 1.687 V. This work emphasizes the surface defects formed by tuning electronic structure of metal centres accompanied with morphological changes of bimetallic dopants for efficient overall water splitting.

Abstract:It is urgent to develop highly efficient, stable and low-cost bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. Herein, an iron-nickel phosphide (Fe2P/Ni2P) heterostructure, constructed by Fe2P nanoparticles embedded on Ni2P nanosheets, is strategically fabricated on nickel foam via a facile process. As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, the Fe2P/Ni2P heterostructure delivers a very low overpotential of 64 mV (or 185 mV) to reach current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for hydrogen (or oxygen) evolution reaction. When simultaneously employed as both the anode and cathode electrodes, it demonstrates an ultralow cell voltage of 1.49 V@10 mA cm(-2) for full water splitting with nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency, and superior long-term stability even over 100 h. Density functional theory calculations manifest that a strong heterointerface interaction could cause electron redistribution near the Fe2P/Ni2P heterointerface and optimize the Delta G(H). of P sites, thus enhancing catalytic activity. Additionally, the 3D porous heterostructure is benefit to expose rich active sites and facilitate ion diffusion and gas bubble release, thus promoting the catalytic performance. This work opens up a new strategical approach for rational design of metal phosphide-based heterostructures as highly efficient and stable bifunctional electrocatalysts for water splitting. Abstract:It is an indisputable fact that electrocatalytic activity is always improved by introducing defects into nanomaterials. Thus, this study demonstrates a simple strategy for defect-rich and porous cobalt phosphide nanowire arrays electrocatalyst derived from the MOF material on nickel foam, which drives water splitting well in alkaline media. Excitingly, p-CoP/NF shows excellent catalytic performance toward the hydrogen evolution reactions with an ultralow overpotential of 35 mV to achieve 10 mA cm−2. Similarly, it is capable enough for the oxygen evolution reactions and reaches a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with an overpotential of 253 mV. Furthermore, when the anode and cathode of a two-electrode electrolytic cell are both assembled from p-CoP/NF electrodes, this cell only requires a voltage of 1.55 V to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2 and exhibits satisfactory durability, which fully demonstrates the potential application of p-CoP/NF electrodes for water splitting.

Abstract:Endeavors to curb the advanced, cost-efficient and ultra stable electrocatalysts for electrochemical water splitting is critically important for energy conversion. However, their limited electrocatalytic behavior caused by large particles (> 10 nm) has leaded to decreased active surface and interaction with the supporting matrix. Herein, we designed a three-dimensional networked multi-metallic phosphides nanosheet arrays in situ grown on nickel foam (NiCoP-Ni 2 P/NF), within ultrafine nanoparticles ( ca. 2.4 nm) evenly distributed on the skeleton, and the lattice of NiCoP is tensilely strained and contains rich phosphorous vacancies that induce localized compressive strain. Combining experimental investigation and theory calculations on hydrogen/oxygen evolution reaction (HER/OER), the as-established NiCoP-Ni 2 P/NF electrodes realize superior electrocatalytic performance is attributed to the strain effect, that is, tensile strain enhances OER while compressive strain facilitates HER. Moreover, the elaborately fabricated NiCoP-Ni 2 P/NF electrode can be cycled for 300 and 30 hours for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions, respectively. The concept of lattice strain couples with phosphorous vacancies imposes the rational design of active and ultra stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for sustainable hydrogen production.

Engineering cobalt sulfide/oxide heterostructure with atomically mixed interfaces for synergistic electrocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:It remains challenging to develop economical and bifunctional electrocatalysts toward oxygen/hydrogen evolution reactions (OER/HER). Herein, we construct Co9S8 nanoflakes decorated Co3O4 nanoarrays with enriched heterogeneous interface zones on Ni foam (Co9S8@Co3O4/NF) via a novel step-wise approach. The Co9S8@Co3O4/NF hybrid manifests excellent performance with low overpotentials of 130 mV for HER (10 mA·cm−2) and 331 mV for OER (100 mA·cm−2), delivering a small voltage of 1.52 V for water splitting at 10 mA·cm−2 as well as outstanding catalytic durability, which surpasses precious metals and previously reported earth-abundant nanocatalysts. Further experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrate that the excellent performance is attributed to the followings: (i) Highly conductive Ni facilitates the efficient charge transfer; (ii) porous core-shell nanoarchitecture benefits the infiltration and transportation of gases/ions; (iii) heterogeneous interface zones synergistically lower the chemisorption energy of hydrogen/oxygen intermediates. This work will shed light on the controllable synthesis and engineering of heterostructure nanomaterials for clean energy storage and conversion technologies.

Multidimensional Ni-Co-sulfide heterojunction electrocatalyst for highly efficient overall water splitting

Abstract:Heterostructure engineering holds exceptional promise for the development of high-performance electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. However, production of inexpensive and high-efficiency bifunctional electrocatalysts remains a challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a simple method to synthesize a paper-mulberry ( Broussonetia papyrifera )-in-spired Co 9 S 8 @CoNi 2 S 4 /nickel foam (Co 9 S 8 @CoNi 2 S 4 /NF) heterojunction with high catalytic activity and stability. The process involves in situ growth of NiCo layered double hydroxide and in situ derivatization of ZIF-67, followed by the S heteroatom doping. The Co 9 S 8 @CoNi 2 S 4 /NF benefits from the heterostructure and functional advantages of multidimensional building blocks including one-dimensional (1D) nanowires, 2D nanosheets and nanoparticles. The optimized Co 9 S 8 @CoNi 2 S 4 /NF heterojunction with 10% sulphur content reveals excellent electrocatalytic activity with the lower over-potentials of 68 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 170 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm −2 in the 1.0 mol L − 1 KOH solution, which is superior to the recently reported transition metal based electrocatalysts. The outstanding performance is attributed to the strong interface coupling between CoNi 2 S 4 and Co 9 S 8 , the advantage of multidimensional structure and the customized electronic structure. The density functional theory suggests that the interface between Co 9 S 8 and CoNi 2 S 4 optimizes the adsorption of the multiple intermediates and further facilitates water splitting kinetics. This work offers a generic approach for heterostructure engineering design of high-performance catalytic system applications.

Abstract:Hydrogen is the mainstream future energy source because of its high energy density and environmentally-friendly properties. In this study, Fe-Co2P/NPC materials were prepared by the wet chemical synthesis method, in which Fe-Co2P nanowires were wrapped by the N, P co-doped carbon layers (NPC) under aging and phosphorylation strategies. When Fe-Co2P/NPC/NF was subjected to hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), the overpotential was only 73 mV and 217 mV to reach the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), respectively. When the cathode and anode were both Fe-Co2P/NPC/NF, a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) was achieved with only 1.56 V. This work provides a new idea for the design and preparation of non-precious metal-based transition metal phosphide catalysts.

Abstract:Transition metal phosphides have been demonstrated to be promising non-noble catalysts for water splitting, yet their electrocatalytic performance is impeded by unfavorable free energies of adsorbed intermediates. The achievement of nanoscale modulation in morphology and electronic states is imperative for enhancing their intrinsic electrocatalytic activity. Herein, we propose a strategy to expedite the water splitting process over NiCoP/FeNiCoP hollow ellipsoids by modulating the electronic structure and d-band center. These unique phosphorus (P) vacancies-rich ellipsoids are synthesized through an ion-exchange reaction between uniform NiCo-nanoprisms and K3[Fe(CN)6], followed by NaH2PO2-assisted phosphorization under N2 atmosphere. Various characterizations reveals that the titled catalyst possesses high specific surface area, abundant porosity, and accessible inner surfaces, all of which are beneficial for efficient mass transfer and gas diffusion. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) calculations further confirms that the NiCoP/FeNiCoP heterojunction associated with P vacancies regulate the electronic structures of d-electrons and p-electrons of Co and P atoms, respectively, resulting in a higher desorption efficiency of adsorbed H* intermediates with a lower energy barrier for water splitting. Due to the aforementioned advantages, the resultant NiCoP/FeNiCoP hollow ellipsoids exhibit remarkably low overpotentials of 45 and 266 mV for hydrogen and oxygen evolution reaction to achieve the current densities of 10 and 50 mA cm-2, respectively. This work not only reports the synthesis of a hollow double-shell structure of NiCoP/FeNiCoP but also introduces a novel strategy for constructing a multifunctional electrocatalyst for water splitting.

Abstract:Herein, the authors demonstrate a heterostructured NiFe LDH-NS@DG10 hybrid catalyst by coupling of exfoliated Ni-Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) nanosheet (NS) and defective graphene (DG). The catalyst has exhibited extremely high electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in an alkaline solution with an overpotential of 0.21 V at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 , which is comparable to the current record (≈0.20 V in Fe-Co-Ni metal-oxide-film system) and superior to all other non-noble metal catalysts. Also, it possesses outstanding kinetics (Tafel slope of 52 mV dec-1 ) for the reaction. Interestingly, the NiFe LDH-NS@DG10 hybrid has also exhibited the high hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance in an alkaline solution (with an overpotential of 115 mV by 2 mg cm-2 loading at a current density of 20 mA cm-2 ) in contrast to barely HER activity for NiFe LDH-NS itself. As a result, the bifunctional catalyst the authors developed can achieve a current density of 20 mA cm-2 by a voltage of only 1.5 V, which is also a record for the overall water splitting. Density functional theory calculation reveals that the synergetic effects of highly exposed 3d transition metal atoms and carbon defects are essential for the bifunctional activity for OER and HER.

Abstract:Designing and constructing bifunctional electrocatalysts is vital for water splitting. Particularly, the rational interface engineering can effectively modify the active sites and promote the electronic transfer, leading to the improved splitting efficiency. Herein, free-standing and defect-rich heterogeneous MoS2/NiS2 nanosheets for overall water splitting are designed. The abundant heterogeneous interfaces in MoS2/NiS2 can not only provide rich electroactive sites but also facilitate the electron transfer, which further cooperate synergistically toward electrocatalytic reactions. Consequently, the optimal MoS2/NiS2 nanosheets show the enhanced electrocatalytic performances as bifunctional electrocatalysts for overall water splitting. This study may open up a new route for rationally constructing heterogeneous interfaces to maximize their electrochemical performances, which may help to accelerate the development of nonprecious electrocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Building heterostructures with rich interfaces by surface engineering is one of the most promising approaches to integrating the rich functionalities for water splitting. Herein, the porous and superhydrophilic nickel phosphide@ NiFe bimetal layered double hydroxides (NF-Ni2P@NiFe LDH) heterostructure in situ grown on nickel foam was successfully constructed. As a result, the unique of self-supported heterostructure and superhydrophilic surface facilitated electron and mass transfer. In addition, the porous structure promoted active site exposure and was in favor of bubble release. Benefiting from the aforementioned advantages, the NF-Ni2P@NiFe LDH performed a superior catalytic performance for water splitting, with a low overpotential of 105.4 mV for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and 203.5 mV for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at 10 mA cm−2, thus a battery voltage of just 1.53 V providing a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at a two-electrode electrolytic cell. Furthermore, the NF-Ni2P@NiFe LDH showed a remarkable stability, which worked for over 60 h at 100 mA cm−2 without visible delay. The ex-situ Raman revealed that the NiOOH and FeOOH severed as active site for OER and HER, respectively.

Abstract:Rational designing efficient transition metal-based multifunctional electrocatalysts is highly desirable for improving the efficiency of hydrogen production from water cracking. Herein, a self-supported three-phase heterostructure electrocatalyst of nickel-cobalt sulfide/nickel phosphide/iron phosphide (CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2) was prepared by a two-step gas-phase sulfurization/phosphorization strategy. The heterostructure in CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 provides a favorable interfacial environment for electron transfer and synergistic interaction of multiphase active components, while the introduced electronegative P/S not only serves as a carrier for proton capture in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) process but also promotes the metal-electron outflow, which in turn accelerates the generation of high-valent Ni3+ species to enhance the catalytic activity of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR). As expected, CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 reveals excellent multifunctional electrocatalytic properties. An overpotential of 35/215 mV is required to reach 10 mA cm-2 for HER/OER. More encouragingly, a current of 100 mA cm-2 requires only 1.36 V for UOR with CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 as anode, which is much lower as compared to the OER (1.50 V). Besides, a two-electrode water/urea electrolyzer assembled based on CoNi5S8-Ni2P-FeP2 has a voltage of only 1.59/1.48 V when the system reaches 50 mA cm-2. This work provides a new idea for the design of energy-efficient water/urea-assisted water-splitting multifunctional catalysts with multi-component heterostructure synergistic interface engineering.
