Abstract:Bacterioplankton are central components of marine environments, and are major players in the biogeochemical cycles. The dynamics of hydrologic conditions have been considered as the vital factor regulating the geographic pattern and assembly process of these microorganisms, which have not been widely investigated. To better understand the effects of hydrodynamic processes on bacterioplankton, the composition and diversity of bacterioplankton during different hydrodynamic processes in the Changjiang estuary throughout the wet and dry seasons were systematically studied via high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene and establishing hydrodynamic model. The results showed that the runoff transport capacity in the Changjiang estuary was strong during the wet season, while weakened in the dry season. Meanwhile, the diversity, structure, and taxonomic composition of bacterioplankton community exhibited spatiotemporal variations during the wet and dry seasons. The diversity of bacterioplankton community between the surface and bottom layers of terrestrial runoff showed significant differences (p < 0.05). The halocline formed by the mixing of runoff and seawater accelerated the vertical water circulation, reducing the diversity difference of the bacterioplankton community (surface and bottom layers) in the diluted waters. The correlation analysis results indicated that the transport capacity of runoff indirectly affected the diversity of bacterioplankton communities by shaping salinity and nutrients. Topological analysis, hydrodynamic processes, and principal coordinate analysis all indicated that higher flow velocity promoted the diffusion ability of bacterioplankton and formed similar bacterioplankton communities during the wet season. These results expanded our understanding of the bacterioplankton community response to hydrodynamic processes in the estuarine ecosystem and provided clues for the underlying mechanisms.
