Abstract:Deploying fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) tools for HVAC systems is an important means of promoting building energy efficiency. For constructing the FDD models and figuring out the fault mechanisms, experimental studies should be constructed to acquire the fault datasets. In this paper, quantitative analyses of the effects of six common faults on the performance of a variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system under three load rates and three cooling operating conditions are first studied. Then, the paper constructs a cross-equipment scenario to explore the feasibility and unfavorable factors of the transfer learning method of fault diagnosis. For two VRF systems with different numbers of indoor units only, the change rates of important parameters under different faults are compared. A “similarity rule” is defined to measure the cross-equipment similarity of the changes of compared parameters. The results show that, the important parameters exhibit a medium or strong cross-equipment similarity overall, which further validates the transferability of cross-equipment fault diagnosis. Under different faults, the parameters of compressor discharge pressure and condenser subcooling temperature perform better in strong cross-equipment similarity. In addition, the magnitude of the parameter change rates is mainly influenced by the parameter values during normal operation, and this shows the necessity of adding normal data from the diagnosed target equipment. Besides, the different fault tolerance of the systems can cause opposite trends in parameter changes. Especially for the fault of the electronic expansion valve stuck at a big opening, the poor similarity of the four parameters shows a risk of negative transfer for cross-equipment fault diagnosis.
